nia is part of an alarming story. investigators now say they believe decades old nail gave way and this beach house deck collapsed. this is in emerald isle, north carolina. about ten people fell to the ground. >> we had a lot of people on top of each other. a lot of blood, broken bones. >> you take a look here. you have can see splinters that deck left in the video. the virginia family was taking a group photo when that deck collapsed. five of those people still in the hospital this morning. 4:30 now this morning and people from across the globe are heading home following the world police and fire games in fairfax. team usa won the medal count more than 1,700 officer and firefighter took home medals. 12,000 first responders from 70 countries participated in the games. people gathered for the closing ceremony last night.

baltimore mother is now charged with child neglect. 26-year-old sandra mcclary is accused of leaving her baby girl alone on the side of the road on july 4th. bishop raymond shoal found her not far from lake waterford park. >> she started crying when we came there. she was sitting quietly and when she saw other people around, she started crying. i don't know who would have done something like that. >> anne arundel police say crews took the baby to the hospital to be checked out. she was released to child protechtive services. today, alexandria people want you to share your reaction to a murder. a man was shot last week and it was the first murder in the city this year. today, go to the charles houston recreational center to talk about chin and what happened. the community meeting begins at

7:00 p.m. a trial for a former day care worker starts today. the woman worked at the miniland academy in woodbridge. the women they say abused toddlers, stepping on their bare toes and spraying them with full pressure hoses among other things. it will be an emotional day in south carolina as lawmakers begin debating whether to keep or remove the confederate flag from state house grounds. we expect rallies outside the state house today. hundreds gathered on the fourth of july to call for the removal of the flag and those calls began shortly after nine black worshipers were killed in a racially motivated shooting in a charleston church. there's still resistance to removing the flag though. we'll talk to nbc's tracie potts

about what can happen today. the family of a korean war soldier will bury his remains at arlington national cemetery. his remains weren't returned to the u.s. for several years and scientists used dna analysis to identify them. david culver at the live desk. perhaps you're waking up and didn't get to see the end of the coke zero 400. it ended less than two hours ago with a horrific crash. what you're looking at is austin dillon's car number 3, it flips right there. look at that goes right into the catch fence and lands on its roof. ripped out a large section of the barrier. three fans were treated on scene for just minor injuries. even more incredible none of the drivers involve in this were hurt. he raises up his hands to the crowd after getting out. he was treated for a bruised tailbone we're told and dale earnhardt, jr. he avoided four wrecks in the night after a 3 1/2 hour rain delay.

this morning a man is expected to be okay after he was freed from a chimney in arizona. he is covered in soot here. his friends say they locked the 23-year-old man out of the house as a joke. this is in phoenix. the man decided to get back in by going down the chimney because he doesn't watch the news and see that never ever ever works. firefighters drilled holes in the chimney to get him out. the woman known as the serial stow away is back in jail. police arrested 63-year-old marilyn hartman twice in two days in chicago. she was released from the cook county jail on thursday after serving two months for trying to board planes without a ticket. she was accused of causing a

disturbance and she was arrested again on saturday at o'hare. she is accused of making five attempts to board planes without a ticket in april and may. and we have also learned that doesn't work either. >> can't do that. 4:41. weather and traffic on the 1s. starting off with a warning about storms. >> tom has your forecast. >> a little bit of light rain in the metro area, parts of the shenandoah valley is, southern area. and enough to make the pavement wet this morning. here is hour by hour timing. through much of mid-morning, just some clouds around and few scattered sprinkles and some showers in the mountains. then around 2:00 3:00, 4:00 we'll begin to see thundershowers developing, and then developing around 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. likely not severe, but some

you're watching "news4 today..." >> welcome back. today a debate over the confederate flag will take center stage in south carolina. lawmakers lawmakers are debating whether to debate about letting it fly at the state house. here is tracie potts. >> reporter: don't expect any decisions. but we are expecting some emotional debate as that flag debate gets under way today. they'll start off in the senate where by the way that's where reverend clementa pinckney served. it was his death and eight others that really sparked this controversy. the flag is still flying in

front of the state house. the debate is over whether or not to take it down. and we have seen rallies. there was a big anti-flag rally. take down the flag rally on saturday. we have seen them on both sides not only in south carolina, but across the country. what we're expecting to happen there today, debate in the senate, if they actually pass this bill to take it down. it will go to the house. where we're expecting it could be even more contentious although media reports down there looking at the vote count suggest that they may actually have enough votes, enough support to get this done. if they don't one lawmaker says he wants to call for referendum to let the voters decide. >> tracie potts live on capitol hill, thank you. david culver at the live desk. breaking his silence in a jailhouse interview, the man accused of shooting anned killing a woman at -- and killing a woman at a san francisco pier did say he killed her. francisco sanchez says he did

"the capital gazette" reports that's the same as last year. each year they receive $100 for lodging, $45 for food and 60 cents per mile for travel. they say they consider it a part of their compensation. you're watching "news4 today." >> we now know the name of a man who died in southeast d.c. someone killed dwayne dillard on douglas douglass place southeast. new concerns about assault against metro bus drivers. a federal review says assault is the biggest safety concern and attacks are up 37% over the past year. the paper says people slap or spit on the drivers and one was stabbed. it is working on a strategy to limit attacks and keep the drivers safe. new this morning, check your pet's food. stella and chewy's is recalling some of the chicken freeze-dried patties for dogs and the chicken

dinner for cats as well. you can find a complete list of recalled products on the nbc washington app. the company said there are no reports of pets or humans getting sick. a new study shows 10,000 students transferred into or out of d.c. public schools. "the washington post" obtained that from the state superintendent of education. they came from other schools or from jail. some students stayed for a day or a few weeks or for the rest of the year and others disappeared without any records. the school system enrollment grew by 2% last year. and stay with us.
