safe. >> lights out at a local high-rise tonight. no power no air conditioning. the red cross working to help up to a thousand people. and the cosby controversy hits home at a smithsonian museum. new tonight, why it's not ending a local art display. >> "news4 at 11" starts now. >> first tonight, a mother's voice still shaking hours after gunshots in a playground full of children. >> parents ran for cover this morning scooping up children along the way at the columbia heights community center on gerard street. police are still looking for the guy who started shooting. news4's jackie bensen is live in northwest with reaction. jackie? >> reporter: doreen, nothing describes the terror of this better than the woman you're about to hear from. she was at this playground with her 1-year-old and her 3-year-old. we're not showing her face.

>> this is somewhere happy place, not somewhere where you're running, shielding children from bullets. >> reporter: it was just before noon and the newly remodelled playground at the columbia heights community center in girard northwest was bustling with people. most were young people, many of them participating in summer camps. it happened so fast. witnesses say a young man ran through the playground with a gun in his hand. then they say stood just inside the rear gate and began firing from the playground at some men in the alley. >> and my 3-year-old was just among the group. and i for sure looked for her first and grabbed her little baby arm. in the process i think i probably knocked another kid over which i probably slung on my other hip. i had children hanging from me as i ran. >> reporter: she says her hands were still shaking hours later. >> there was a group. see this out building right here? huddled behind there is 4-year-olds. so imagine your 4-year-old huddled behind an outbuilding for ten minutes waiting for a man with a gun to go away.

>> reporter: the community center was closed for rest of the day. john stokes is the deputy director of the d.c. department of parks and recreation. >> they're looking into the situation. so i don't want to say too much about it. they are rig louisly looking into the situation. >> we're told residents can expect to see extra police patrols in the area tomorrow. >> jackie, thank you. new at 11 a montgomery county corrections officer arrested for having sex with a woman who was doing community service. jeremy simmons charged with sexual misconduct and attempted second degree rape. simmons told her if they had sex begin he would sign off on the rest of her community service hours. he has since been released on bond. the red cross is doing its best to help about a thousand people who don't have power for the second time in three days.

an electrical fire knocked out the air conditioning in all but one elevator at a high-rise condo building in silver spring. news4's shomari stone live along university boulevard tonight with more on what is being done to fix it. shomari? >> reporter: good evening, jim. right now the red cross is talking to some of the residents. the red cross has opened a shelter at montgomery blair high school not too far away from where we are. let me move right out of the way. you see that bus right there? some of the residents are supposed to come out here get on the bus and leave. but here is the issue. many of them are not going to the shelter. keep in mind these are condos. they're not apartments. and a lot of folks say they're not going anywhere. they're either staying with family or friends tonight. and firefighters tell me it's highly unlikely that an electrical contractor will be able to fix the wires in this building. tonight nearly a thousand people are in the dark, somsithing in candlelight inside university towers in silver spring after a fire caused an electrical

outrage. >> it's annoying. it's frustrating. i came home after a long day today. i was kind of fried and not to mention the building smells horrible. >> reporter: not to mention it's hot. the backup generator powers one elevator and fire alarms. >> water pressure is really low. >> reporter: the trouble started on sunday after investigators say a fire broke thought the boiler room and knocked out electricity to the 15-story building that houses 270 condos. everyone had to be evacuated. firefighters rescued several people from elevators that stopped working. the power came back on and then went off again today. >> it was on all day yesterday. then i went to work today. i came back around 3:00, and it was the same. >> sunday there was no electricity. it was the same situation. >> reporter: adama and her mother are going to a friend's house tonight. >> it's really hot outside. and not having any running water really makes it work. so it's terrible. >> reporter: ron jaffe is delivering battery-operated fans to his 92-year-old mother. >> she is on the 11th floor. she doesn't want to leave. she has been there for 25 years.

>> reporter: now right now the red cross is also offering temporary housing for the folks. and also food and water right out here outside the building. keep in mind those buses are here. and if people want to use them, they are welcome. to as for what happened, well, an electrical contractor still trying to figure out what caused this fire. live here, i'm shomari stone. back to you in the studio. new tonight we have learned the smithsonian institution does not plan to take down an exhibit featuring art from bill cosby's personal collection. the pieces of artwork have been on display at the national museum of african art since last november. today the museum issued a statement saying it was aware of new revelations about cosby, but the exhibit is about the artwork and the artists and not about the owners of the collections. newly released documents show cosby admitted ten years ago to obtaining quaaludes to give to women he wanted to have sex with. there is a renewed push tonight for ben's chili bowl to

remove all references tos could built. that includes that large mural there outside the restaurant on 13th street and u streets northwest. cosby has been long-time friends with the family that owns the restaurant. ben's is opening a new location in northeast tomorrow and we're told there are no references to cosby at that location. federal agents saying very little tonight about their raid on the home of former subway spokesperson jared fogel. the fbi removed electronics from his indiana home as part of a child pornography investigation. two months ago, the head of jared's charitable foundation was arrested and charged with producing and possessing child porn. at the time fogel said he was shocked by the allegations. after the raid subway and fogel mutually decided to suspend their relationship. here at the live desk, we're getting information that puts a whole new light on that shooting involving illegal immigrant in san francisco. sources are telling our sister station in the bay area he used

a gun that belongs to a federal agent. authorities checked the gun's serial number and it matched a federal agent's weapon. earlier today juan francisco lopez sanchez pleaded not guilty to charges he killed the woman on the embarcadero. sanchez he found the gun on a bench wrapped in a blanket and it accidentally fired when he touched it. last week kate steinle was walking with her father when somebody shot her in the back. it started a firestorm over immigration enforcement. san francisco was a so-called sanctuary city and they let sanchez out of jail despite federal officers trying to get him deported. he served 17 years in prison and has four felony drug convictions. jim? >> chris thank you. the body of a police investigator killed in a cycling accident last week here will be escorted home with full honors. carlos silva was from brazil. he died after colliding with other cyclists during a race for the world police and fire games. tomorrow officers from northern

virginia will provide a funeral escort to dulles international airport. the procession begins at 10:00 a.m. in alexandria. it will travel up 495 to the dulles toll road up towards the airport. we just learned a virginia man brutally beaten in the district over the weekend has died. a police report says 52-year-old thomas harris was walking in the area of north capitol and n street sunday afternoon when someone approached him from behind and threw him to the ground. witnesses say it looked like the attacker was trying to steal harris' cell phone. harris suffered a fractured skull and died monday there is a $25,000 reward for information that leads to his attacker. neighbors held hands and prayed tonight to stop the violence in their community. the prayer vigil was held here outside the grays view apartments in southwest d.c. organizers tell us they want to put andy to violence. they say most homicides in ward 7 and 8 are gun-related. new details in a story you saw first on news4. d.c. police have tracked down

morning when the jet collided with the plane just outside charleston. and we have confirmed that both people on board that cessna were killed. the crash sent debris rain do you think on a trailer park. but family that lives in this one wasn't home when a huge piece of the jet landed on it. and new tonight we learned the cessna had just taken off moments before the collision, headed to myrtle beach. live at the desk, i'm chris laurence. a small brushfire did major damage in california today. now an entire church community is without a place to worship. the blaze began next to a freeway, but quickly spread to a mormon church in a suburb of l.a. more than 100 firefighters battled these flames. it took 90 minutes to bring them under control. no one was in the church at the time. investigators are still trying to figure out just what sparked the fire. a virginia mother has a warning for all parents tonight as her baby boy recovers from the hospital from botulism poisoning. benjamin ellis shell is just 3

look at this one. this is the one coming in right now. saw a couple of showers towards the shenandoah valley. those have died off. one more round coming in here. this round will try to make it in too. if you live west of the blue ridge, you may see some showers this evening. but the rest remain on the dry side. this front, however, by early tomorrow morning be on top of us. what that means is more cloud cover. isolated chance of shower. here we are at 8:00 a.m. front royal, winchester, maybe toward frederick an isolated shower. more clouds than sun tomorrow morning. i'm not too worried about rain early tomorrow. but watch what happens during the afternoon. well start to see scattered showers and thunderstorms developing. i am not expecting anything strong or severe. this is not that kind of storm system. however, it's a storm system that brings us rain. any of the storms that do develop could produce heavy rain. at 6:00 pretty heavy rain towards charles county. front royal fauquier county. watch what happens around 10:00. we see a little bit of storm motion, a little turning in the atmosphere. some of these could hold some

very heavy rainfall. that's really going to be the only concern as we move on through the day tomorrow. by thursday morning, that's all out of here. once again we're just talking about cloud cover. the impact forecast tomorrow on the low side for the most part. take the umbrella. but this is what we're used to this time of year. hot and humid weather. warm and humid with storms possible during the day. once again, nothing severe. high temperature 88 in d.c. 82 in martinsburg. 88 culpeper and 90 in fredericksburg. we will see a lot of cloud cover, the storms, any sun that develops will help the storm to develop. we'll see a little bit of lightning, maybe briefly heavy wind. 88 tomorrow. 89 on thursday. slight chance of shower on thursday. not a whole lot out there. maybe a storm or two. 87 on friday. 88 on saturday. now what about the rest of the week into early next week? we've got a high of 92 degrees on sunday. so the heat and the humidity return. and it looks like it wants to kind of stick around into early next week. now, we have not had a lot of 90-degree days over the last two weeks.
