to the metro this morning waiting for a bus dry walkways will be in the upper 60s through the morning. when walking back home in the mid 80s with dry walkways headed back home. next weather and traffic on the 1s a look at the hour by hour forecast over the next 12 hours. aaron? >> thank you. 5:02. today, keep an eye on the nbc washington app, we'll learn new developments in the lyon sisters disappearance case. we learned of the indictment of lloyd welch yesterday, the strongest piece from his cousin henry parker. parker says that he helped lloyd lug two plastic bags from the trunk of a car in bedford county, virginia, in 1975. he said they smelled of death and the bags were eventually set on fire. sheila and katherine lyon vanished from wheaten 40 years ago. yesterday, the police chief indicated he may not be done arresting people. >> and the montgomery county police and all of our partners will work to hold every individual responsible who was

involved with the abduction and murder of the lyon sisters. >> now, the bedford county sheriff will release new information at noon. you can get up to speed before that by heading to the nbc washington app for a deeper look at the case. today, the man accused of killing nine people at a historic black church in south carolina will be in court. 21-year-old dylann roof will be at a hearing in a few hours. the judge there will decide whether to release more dourments in the -- documents in the case. they were sealed to protect roof's right to the fair trial. they include 911 calls, witness statements and reports from the medical examiner. that's according to our affiliate there. it is now 5:03. new details about a d.c. homicide. d.c. police arrested kenneth garner for a brutal beating on north capitol street. investigators believe garner struck thomas harris in the head with a bat or a similar item and robbed him last week. harris are died. his family said he was on the

way to buy fireworks. police charged garner with first degree murder. a second arrest connected to the mysterious death of a landover woman. the charles county sheriff's office charged darrell wilson with the first degree murder of crystal anderson. she was reported missing in 2011. a hiker found her remains at a charles county park in 2012. in march police charged 22-year-old raymond posey in connection to what case. we have some developing news right now about former president george h.w. bush. he's recovering after breaking a bone in his neck. our affiliate station in portland, maine, said he's at maine medical center and he's doing okay this morning. he has to wear a neck brace. he's 91 years old and he's the oldest living former u.s. president. later this morning, frederick city, maryland, will find out who the new top police officer is. the mayor is holding a news

conference at 8:00 to announce the new police chief for the frederick county department. we'll send you an alert when that announcement is made. a store in d.c.'s bloomingdale neighborhood is closed for at least one year for selling synthetic drugs. the attorney general said the store was the site of multiple synthetic drug seizures and an employee was shot there. it may have been related to the drug sale. the owner is a retired police officer. last week, muriel bowser signed a tough new law to allow police to fine or close businesses for selling the drugs. the search is for the driver who dragged a police officer. near alberta drive in district heights last night. the officer was caught in the door and then the driver sped off with the officer halfway inside the car, throwing the officer to the ground. the suspect slammed into a tree about 100 yards away and then ran away.

effort so that elementary school kids don't have to step over or picking up dirty condoms or latex gloves in front of their school. it's totally unacceptable. it's the highest level of the police department and yet it continues. >> police say there will be more patrols in ward 6. right now, president obama is in oklahoma where he plans to visit the federal correctional institution. the president is there to press for justice system reforms. he talked bluntly about this issue. in a few minutes we'll dig deeper on what the reforms will look like and how they affect people in and out of the prison system. getting to the airport and metro is about to get easier in northern virginia. officials are breaking ground today on a widening project for part of route 606 in loudoun county. that project widens the five mile section between evergreen mills road and the dulles

greenway. eventually, it will ease traffic to dulles airport and the future route 606 metro station. here's something to know if you're thinking of how to get home tonight. three lanes will be closed on the outer loop of the beltway in montgomery county. this is happening over the maryland 185 exit. all lanes should reopen before the friday morning rush. that will continue on weekdays until the concrete is repaired. your kids' lunches at d.c. public schools aren't changing any time soon. we told you the school food vendor wanted to pull out of the contract this fall. well, after settling a lawsuit with the district, the vendor can't do that under the contract's terms that's according to "the washington post." the report says the vendor will have to provide service for at least the next year and possibly longer. in "news4 your health" 5:18, alzheimer's disease may affect your brain differently depending on your race. researchers in chicago say black

people are more likely to have additional brain changes from the disease. three-quarters of black alzheimer's patients showed signs of stroke or parkinson's disease. they were also found to have more frequent and severe blood vessel disease than in other patients. aarp is out with some incredible numbers this morning. the group says americans spend 37 billion hours caring for their parents spouses and other adult loved ones in 2013. aarp says that's worth a staggering $470 billion. that is more than the u.s. spent on medicaid. a lot of the folks told aarp they feel overwhelmed and are under financial strain. parents, you can do more now to ensure good heart health for your child later in life. low levels of vitamin "d" in adults is believed to be associated with several health issues including heart disease. canadian researchers looked at children under the age of 5 and found higher vitamin "d" levels. this led experts to believe that

this is cell phone video. you see everybody standing there just watching the place go up in flames and a huge explosion. the fire broke out when a tank with liquefied hydrocarbon leaked at the plant creating this just huge ball of fire. the tank exploded three times actually this morning. more than 130 firefighters there to try to put it out. so far, no one has reported to have been hurt in the fire. aaron? >> all right thank you. it's 5:23 now. search crews recovered two bodies from the mountainside. it went down on saturday. when crews reached the site yesterday, the wreckage was still smoldering. the 16-year-old did survive the crash. it took her two days to hike down the mountain to safety. a search is under way for four people who are still missing after severe flooding in eastern kentucky. mud, rain and debris hampering

the search teams. at least three have died and the missing four people are feared dead after floodwater ravaged that area on monday. cadaver dogs are helping in the search which covers about eight miles. about 150 homes were destroyed in the flooding. new haven, connecticut, police have a gruesome mystery they're trying to solve. they found a human arm in the same area where someone found a pair of legs earlier wednesday. detectives don't know whether the remains are related. a medical examiner is trying to determine the identity or identities. police are checking missing persons reports as well. a meeting up in boston today about the united states olympic bid. city leaders there meeting with the usoc. they'll talk about how to present boston as the best place for the olympics in 2024. boston beat out three other cities including d.c. to be the country's representative. it is now up against a lot of cities from all over the world. well we're learning now

that senator bob menendez has raised more than $1.5 million to defend himself since he was indicted in april. that brings the total amount he's race to nearly $3 million. he is accused of using his influence to help a friend in exchange for lavish vacations and campaign donations. he's a democrat from new jersey. today is tv's biggest day. the emmy nominations will come out. here are some of the changes you will notice. the emmys are expanding from six nominees to seven. the show also clarified the drama and comedy category classifications. dramas air 60-minute episodes and comedies are 30 minutes. the nominations won't be announced until 11:30 this morning. usually they're revealed at 8:30. watch the emmys on september 20th. a shout out to our producing and directing team for the emmy nominations. >> for this show. more than $10 billion is

next weather and traffic on the 1s at 5:41. breaking news on metro. for the past 30 minutes we have been told that everything is on time. we are now being told that the red line is single-tracking. megan mcgrath there going to talk to her in a second. but right now, megan said we're single-tracking between grosvenor. right now, single-tracking on the red line and this is after all of that mess yesterday in the morning and in the evening for travelers on the red line, single-tracking between twinbrook and grosvenor. megan mcgrath is out there at the station. what are you seeing out there at this point? >> reporter: well, what we're hearing is that they have not been able to finish the clean-up work. they had hoped to clean up this oil spill on the tracks overnight, but they're not quite there yet. if you look behind me here down on the tracks, you can see there's a metro work vehicle

down there on the tracks. i spoke to a worker just a short time ago. he said they're pretty much finishing up at this point, and they're going to then try to resume normal operations but they're just not quite there yet. we're hearing from metro they're preparing a test train to go through the area that was a problem. just to make sure that everything is absolutely okay and that they can resume normal operations. they hope to do that within the next half hour or so. whether or not that's the case remains to be seen. we'll keep a close eye on it. really tough time yesterday on the red line single-tracking between grosvenor and the twinbrook station. a lot of people inconvenienced a lot of delays and crowded stations. so we'll keep a close eye on it this morning and we'll let you know as soon as things get back to normal. back to you. >> megan thank you. this afternoon, joe biden heads to the hill to try to build some consensus around the iran nuclear deal. he is meeting with skeptical

senators from his own party. yesterday, he spoke with house democrats. president obama staunchly defended the deal in a press conference yesterday saying it's the best way to prevent iran from developing the nuclear bomb. congress has a 60-day window to look at the agreement. a north carolina man wanted in the murders of his wife and stepdaughter may be laying low in this area. court documents show billy joe mclain kidnapped his teenage stepson and on monday, firefighters found his wife and stepdaughter's bodies in a burning apartment. he fled to the d.c. or the maryland area. he was last seen driving a 2001 ford van. a large crowd gathered to remember a man killed in a house fire in accokeek. his friends and family used white balloons to remember him. he was shot after leaving a

party sunday morning. as police search for the killer the owners of the home which hosted the party are facing a fine. prince george's county police said they were selling tickets to the party which is illegal without a permit. brand-new video of someone stealing from a library in d.c. this man stole several computer froms the deanwood -- computers from the deanwood library. he cuts the wires holding the computers in place and then takes them to the window one by one. that happened on saturday june 20th, about 4:30 in the morning. misare offering -- police are offering a $1,000 reward in this case. we are expected to learn if investigators can look at actions taken by governor scott walker's staff during his recall campaign. the question is whether walker's campaign staff illegally coordinated with conservative groups during the recall. walker denies the charges. that was sparked by anger over walker ending collective bargaining for most public workers.

he announced his 2016 presidential bid days ago. donald trump's financial disclosure has done little to end the mystery of how much his fortune is worth. he's officially disclosed it to the federal election commission. yesterday, his campaign said that trump is worth, quote in excess of $10 billion. but there are very few specifics on his assets. >> the math does not add up. there is more missing than not missing in the report. >> now this morning on the "today" show, nbc's katy tur is digging into the numbers. she'll have the latest on the dispute. the "usa today" suffolk county poll shows trump leading the republican field, but still losing to hillary clinton by a wide margin. and we're just seeing some new poll numbers into the newsroom this morning. only 39% of americans have a favorable view of hillary clinton. this is according to the poll. nearly half few her unfavorably.

submit an application at the end of the year. some good news for a local family of 13 that lost everything in a home fire last month. news4 introduced you to the family who were taken in by another family. gracing spaces helped to furnish their new home and now they have a new 12-seat passenger van. a go fund account has collected more than $23,000. members of congress calling for change following a news4 i-team report. they want more money spent on internal government agents to cut down on the number of awol federal workers. on monday night, scott macfarlane reported that internal government watchdogs have caught at least 60 govpt -- government workers doctoring their time change since 2012 and they cost taxpayers $1 million.

megan mcgrath is talking to workers and to commuters. megan? >> reporter: well, eun, we have not seen any trains traveling on this outbound track. so they are still single-tracking here on the red line this morning. not good news for people who had a difficult time yesterday because of the same problem. here's what we have learned just here within the last half hour or so. there was a foam-filled tire on a piece of work equipment that ruptured yesterday afternoon. that created slippery conditions down on the tracks. in fact, trains apparently were losing traction on the outbound track along that stretch. so for safety reasons they began to single track. take a look at this video and that of course caused major delays throughout the day yesterday.
