"news4 today" continues right now at 5:00 a.m. >> "news4 today" begins with breaking news. >> and that breaking news is out of prince george's county at 5:00 a.m. within the last hour, we learned of a deadly shooting in capitol heights. a security guard has died and this is impacting traffic. still a very active crime scene this morning. news4's megan mcgrath live in capitol heights. what have you learned? >> reporter: well, aaron, there are two scenes where police are working. take a look behind me here. this is one of them. 5 cindy lane a parking lot associated with an apartment complex. we have investigators in the back part of the parking lot. they have been looking at a couple of the cars that are parked along the tree line. and the whole area is cordoned off. then if we walk this way up the stairs, this is where the secondary scene is -- or second scene. we are not sure where this all

started, where it ended, but you have a second scene down there. that is 214 central avenue. and central avenue is closed in both directions between addison road and pepper mill to traffic. we are not sure how long that's going to be the case. we have seen investigators down there as well, also with evidence markers. not a lot of information, but here's what we know. around 1:00, shots rang out here on cindy lane. there were two people who were shot. we're told that they're security guards. one of those security guards was killed. no word on how many suspects they're looking for or any kind of lookout for a car or any of that information yet. this is still very early in the investigation. no word on motive either, but two people were shot. security guards. we're not sure if they were associated with the apartment complex, but one of them has died and the scene very active here and the road closure potentially going to be in place for at least the early start of

beginning to warm up they noticed someone had cut through the pipes. the largest muslim advocacy group is asking authorities to investigate monday and last night's incidents as a bias crime. also developing at 5:04, the fbi wants to know more about the 24-year-old man who went on a shooting rampage at two tennessee military facilities. this as we wait to learn the names of the four marines who were killed. the suspected shooter is mohammed abdulazeez. the fbi says abdulazeez he fired all the shots from inside his car and then got out of his car and killed four marines. a police officer and another person were also hurt in the shooting. >> we are checking every possible place that he could reside or could have resided, visited where he shopped, where he went to school. who his friends were as he worked out at a gym. every possible lead.

>> the gunman died in the shoot-out with police at that second facility. federal prosecutors say the attack is being investigated as an act of domestic terrorism. more on the suspected shooter mohammed abdulazeez. several years ago, abdulazeez's father was vessed for -- investigated for a potential connection to a terrorist organization being now was found. we'll have a live report from tennessee with more on the shooting suspect's recent arrest. disturbing new details about the man accused of beating a maryland child to death over a piece of birthday cake. he has been charged with abuse before. police say robert wilson beat 9-year-old jack garcia unconscious inside a hagerstown apartment after accusing him of stealing a piece of cake. the boy died five days later. in 2010, frederick county prosecutors charged him with abusing the daughter of a woman he lived with. those charges were dropped in a

plea deal. wilson and oriana garcia face murder and child abuse charges in jack garcia's death. this next video might be hard to watch, but d.c. police need your help catching the men this this video. a group violently roshed a -- robbed a man for his bike. you can see it here. police are offering a $5,000 reward for the men involved in the assault and robbery. new this morning japan just announcing that plans for the main stadium for the 2020 summer olympics will have to be scrapped because of out of control costs. here are renderings of the stadium this morning. the government there in japan faced a lot of criticism as estimates for the cost of the stadium rose to 252 billion yen. that's $2 billion. nearly twice as much as the initial plan. so now a construction that was supposed to be starting coming up in october, not happening. they're going to have to completely start over this plan

guzman sneaked into the mile-long tunnel saturday night. now a massive manhunt is underway. the interior minister said anyone who helped guzman will be punished. this sounds pretty low, but it's true. an 18-year-old man is in jail for ripping off a lemonade stand. the sheriff department say two 13-year-old girls set up the stand on wednesday in rancho cucamonga, and a man said he wanted some lemonade and then he pushed over the stand and took off with the money box. it only took a few minutes for the deputy to find the 18-year-old with the box and the $30. >> wow. >> just not worth it. >> he's a bum. >> i mean, not the lemonade stand. 5:11 our time right now. 70 degrees outside our studios. feels pretty good today. >> yeah. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein with a look at our forecast. good morning. >> good morning. all looking good for the friday commute too on the roads. we'll have great weather, travel wise. morning, midday and afternoon.

all right. folks, getting you up to speed on the breaking news. we know two security guards shot in prince george's county. one of them is dead right now. news4's megan mcgrath on the scene there. this is on cindy lane in capitol heights. megan is reporting a large police presence and two separate scenes. this is near the apartment complex off of central avenue. 214. we'll have more from megan at 5:30. it will be a tough day in tennessee as people mourn the deaths of four marines killed by a lone gunman. right now the question for investigators is why the gunman opened fire. nbc's dave wagner is live in chattanooga now with more.

what are you learning this morning? good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, eun. this is the crime scene. the second of the two crime scenes. this is the place that four marines were killed yesterday. you know, a sad morning in chattanooga as four families and the entire family grieve. it was 30 minutes of terror at two military centers. this morning authorities are asking the question, was it an act of terrorism? the 24-year-old gunman mohammad youssuf abdulazeez lived with his parents we know that. dad, a city employee here. the gunman though was not on any terrorist watch list. we talked to his high school friends and they say this was not his m.o. at all. this was not what he was like. but if you look at his high school year book entry it's haunting here. it says this. my name causes national security alerts. what does yours? we should point out here that they have searched his house they have searched his car and they have searched his internet

activity, but at this point, eun, they are being very tight lipped about what that they found. >> all right, dave wagner, thank you. developing story right now in st. louis. two men in critical condition after a house explosion there. take a look here, a lot of firefighters called out to this one last night around 11:00. one two-story home just exploded. and the two neighboring houses caught fire right after. the two men were trapped in the house that exploded. they were rescued and taken to the hospital. now the question is what exactly caused this house to explode? aaron? >> kristin wright, thank you. 5:18 and this morning we expect d.c. mayor muriel bowser to name a new chief for the police dna testing lab. this comes at a troubled timefor that facility. the last director was reportedly fired after a damning report on lab practices. "the washington post" reports a former head of the fbi dna lab

will be named the new director. and we'll find out if a former new york congressman will head to prison. prosecutors say michael grim deserves two years in jail for dodging tax charges. doctors say a broken bone in former president bush's neck will heal naturally. george h.w. bush took a tumble on wednesday and now doctors say the broken bone in his neck would heal on its own in three to four months. the fracture to a c-2 vertebrae the second bone below the skull didn't lead to any other injuries. there's no word on when he will be released from maine medical center in portland. president obama called bush yesterday morning to wish him a speedy recovery. we have a tentative start date for construction on the purple line. maryland's board of public works will pick a contractor by january 15th. construction would then start on may 16 2016. right now, four teams of private companies are competing for that 35-year contract to build and operate the line. the purple line is a light rail

project that would connect montgomery and prince george's counties. all of the metro rail cars are back in service. they were pulled for safety inspections after reports of door problems. you can see one of the passenger videos we've got here. the train is moving while the doors were open. the cars will be replaced with the new 7000 series rail cars. gridlock in congress can mean your commute won't be much shorter any time soon. a local transportation project like the big 66 expansion could be put on hold if congress doesn't come up with new highway funding. that's according to virginia's transportation secretary. congress might end up passing a short term extension. that could keep construction going through the summer. coming up on 5:21 now on this friday morning, and we started yesterday -- we had all day yesterday nice weather. this morning, you see the clouds in the picture here. >> oh. >> doesn't feel so bad though.

>> it doesn't. let's check in with storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein to find out what kind of day we'll have. >> those clouds are the leading edge of the increased humidity pushing over the metro area. it will get increasingly humid into the afternoon but right now still comfortable. as you head out the door for a morning run, walking the dog, it's just in the low 60s with comfortable humidity. but then later today and tonight, it starts getting sticky and then oppressive humidity moves in on saturday and will be in place for several days after that. the high humidity and higher heat. right now, the coolest temperatures we'll see over the next seven days are right now. we're in the upper 50s and low 60s nearby suburbs and near 70 by the bay in downtown. in the shenandoah valley, around 60. a delightful morning there. the low clouds are passing over the washington monument now, live view from our tower camera. temperatures by 8:00 in the metro area will be near 70. still in the 60s in the rural areas. then by noontime, should be in the low 80s. then jumping into the upper 80s

during the afternoon and increasingly humid and we'll have some increasing clouds as well. might get a sprinkle or maybe a brief passing shower midnight tonight and then saturday afternoon there's a small chance of a thundershower. it will feel like nearly 100 with the humidity. and very humid and even hotter on sunday. sunday afternoon highs in the upper 90s. then sunday night might get a passing thundershower and then monday morning, quite humid. another very hot day on monday. the upper 90s. heat index that feels like temperature feels like 100 on monday with the possibility of afternoon storms. then settles down a bit on tuesday, but still hot. not quite as hot wednesday and thursday. chance of afternoon storms both of those days. a look at neighborhood highs for this friday next weather and traffic on the 1s at 5:31. melissa has an update on that road in prince george's county. >> breaking news just got off

that is incredible. police say the twister caused major damage in the small town of cameron. right now, no one except emergency personnel are being allowed in there. so far, no significant injuries have been reported. that is a massive tornado. wow. well, new this morning, friends and family gathered in australia to remember those lives lost on malaysia flight 17. it was shot down over rebel held eastern ukraine one year ago. today a memorial to the aust unveiled in the capital of canberra. there were 38 australians on that plane that was heading from amsterdam to kuala lumpur. all the people on night were kill and a report of -- a report on the crash will be released in october. we are learning from a brave 16-year-old girl who lived through a small plane crash in washington state a little more on what happened. she was flying home with her stepgrandparents who were killed when their plane flew into the

"news4 today" begins with breaking news. >> the breaking news in capitol heights, maryland, where two security guards were shot on the job. in the last 30 minutes we have learned there are two crime scenes. news4's megan mcgrath live in capitol heights. we understand that you have learned new information about these guards. >> reporter: yeah, we have learned quite a few new details here since i spoke to you within the last half hour. first of all 214 central avenue has reopened. we had a second crime scene down on central avenue a little while ago. there was some evidence markers down there and investigators were looking around.

they have since wrapped that part of this up. and they have reopened the road. now, if you take a walk down here though, this is just off of cindy lane. the apartment complex here. the central garden apartments. we still have a very active investigation, active scene here. you can see the evidence markers. they're on the pavement. they have police tape up a couple of cars they have been looking at. they continue to try to piece together exactly what happened. now, i spoke to a resident who said she heard about five gunshots between 12:30 and 1:00 in the morning. she was leaving her house and that's when she heard the gunfire. didn't necessarily think anything of it immediately but then once she saw all the police activity once she returned home she realized what happened. two security guards were shot in this. one of those security guards has died. neighbors say that those guards are armed, but there is a regular security presence here. they're armed but it's unclear if there was an actual exchange

police officers on your way to work on metro. nbc's edward lawrence live on capitol hill now with more on how law enforcement has been monitoring social media for an attack like we saw yesterday. edward, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. they're using all resources that they have at their disposal. there is a significant police presence at union station. i saw them yesterday and this morning. as you said the fbi is looking at this as an act of domestic terrorism. our saursources are saying they believe this is sponsored or promoted from overseas through social media and the internet. now, because of that, security is being stepped up at some federal buildings and military facilities across the country. just last week, the fbi director told congress there's a group of pro isis tweeting out of syria calling for attacks on anyone in uniform. the security will remain in place through the weekend at least. now, federal authorities are especially worried about today. that's because today is the last day of ramadan and those folks who are tweeting pro isis

tweeters are saying that they need to get the attacks in before the end of this holy month. so security forces are on heightened alert today especially across the country and also here in washington, d.c. reporting live on capitol hill, edward lawrence. back to you. >> thank you. new details in this morning about that huge oil spill out in california. this is off the coast of santa barbara. just in that beach is expected to open today. this after in may a corroded on shore pipeline ruptured, spilling 101,000 gallons of crude oil. clean-up costs up to $92 million. concerning also for wildlife, hundreds of birds and marine mammals were found dead in this spill area. and the operator of that pipeline that broke could face criminal charges. back to you.

we the jury find the defendant, james eeghen holmes, guilty of murder in the first degree after deliberations. >> the trial of the colorado movie theater shooter now enters a new phase. whether james holmes should be sentenced to death for his crime. the jury found him guilty of killing 12 people and wounding dozens of others in that 2012 attack. jurors rejected the idea that holmes was legally insane when he opened fire in the movie theater. the jury deliberated for a day and a half before returning guilty verdicts on 165 counts. among those in the courtroom yesterday were survivors of the attack. >> i looked at him when the verdict came out because i wanted to know, what is his response, and there's just nothing. which i mean, that's how i feel towards him is nothing. he's -- he's nothing in my life and i don't want to give him any energy. >> experts say the sentencing phase could prove even more emotional as survivors describe

the impact of the shooting on their daily lives. if one juror disagrees with the death sentence, holmes will be sent to prison for life. and investigators are investigating the death of an inmate as a possible homicide. terrence serata was found dead. they didn't find any signs of trauma. right now police are trying to figure out how a woman lost control of her car before hitting and killing a mother of eight. maria posadas was hit on a sidewalk in montgomery county. this happened near randolph and veirs mill road in wheaton. the driver hit a utility pole and then struck posadas. >> very nice. >> yeah, i feel sad about her kids and her family. >> now, we're learning that several pedestrians had been hit and killed in the same area. if you were in the area and saw

the incident, police would like to hear from you. first thing monday morning the u.n. security council will vote on whether or not to endorse this week's nuclear agreement with iran. council members have been briefed by both iran and the countries that signed the deal. the resolution is almost certain to pass. that's because the five countries on the council that have actual veto power were all involved in negotiating the deal. greece is inching a little closer to economic calm. the government says it will reopen its banks on monday. the people will only be able to withdraw a limited amount of money. greece has been in the midst of a massive debt crisis. banks have been closed for three weeks. right now european central bank is putting cash back into the that news bolstered world markets. it's now 5:38. in "news4 your health" this morning it could be a major break through for anyone with peanut allergies. the patch that could increase your body's tolerance. and one of google's

and prosecutors are frustrated with the judge's decision. >> because of public safety concerns that we have for anyone chargeled with the crimes it's something we want to look at. >> harris survived a kidney transplant in 2010 and it was profiled on the "today" show. in the lyons sisters case, more than one person may be responsible. the sheriff said that richard welch the uncle of the man charged in the murders may have sexually assaulted katherine and sheila lyon. police are calling the uncle a person of interest. he lives in hyattsville, maryland. a grand jury has indicted lloyd lee welch for the murder of the two children. he's currently in jail in delaware on an unrelated sex offense. disturbing new details about the man accused of fatally beating a maryland child over a piece of birthday cake. he's been charged with abuse before. police say robert wilson beat

9-year-old jack garcia unconscious in june after accusing him of stealing a piece of cake. the boy died five days later. in 2010, prosecutors charged him with abusing the daughter of a woman he lived with. those charges were dropped in a plea deal. wilson faces murder and child abuse charges in jack garcia's death. this next video may be hard to watch, but d.c. police need your help catching these men. the group violently robbed a man for his bike. this was near 11th and "r" streets in northwest washington on saturday. the whole thing was caught on camera. police are offering a $5,000 reward for the men involved in this assault and robbery. 5:49 now. officials at a manassas muslim association tell us someone has targeted a northern virginia mosque for the second time this week. molette green has more on this. good morning. >> reporter: aaron, good morning. hit twice in one week really raises a lot of suspicions here.

let me show you what has happened, the damage here. copper cables cut from this mosque's a.c. unit. now, this just happened last night. we got word about that. it's the second time in the same week here. they first targeted the a.c. unit on monday. while worshipers were inside for morning prayers. and at that time, right after that, the worshippers here asked for police to check this out to see if this is more than just some random act of violence. if there's possible bias involved here. especially since this is the one-year anniversary of this mosque opening at this location and of cou the muslim holy period of ramadan. let me just say, this location on euclid avenue is in an industrial park. we're not on the main beat. the major road is liberia avenue. so worshipers here are wondering what's going on. that is the latest live from

helped handle their child care. it's called the army fee assistance program. it's for army moms and dads who can't find day care available on the post. it helps them use private and pricier day-care centers. they found the government subsidies are often sent late. parents are falling into debt and they have trouble getting their phone calls returned. >> they failed their families and everybody i talked to. unfortunately in this one instance it's not working. >> the i-team found a backlog of 11,000 unreturned phone calls e-mails and requests from army families to the government. administrators say they're adding staff and working to fix the problem. google is going back to the drawing board with the self-driving car. three google employees suffered whiplash after the self-driving car was involved in an accident. now, this is first accident for that car in which people were actually hurt. the car was rear ended in california earlier this month.

no one seriously hurt. google said this was the 14th accident in six years and about 1.9 million miles of testing. well, hula or netflix? one of the two is flirting with getting rid of ads in hopes of gaining more customers. landon dowdy joining us from cnbc with more on all of this. hey, landon. >> hey, aaron, good morning to you. that's right. hula is considering an ad free option as it tries to be anetflix. currently users have to sit through the ads. netflix and amazon prime don't have ads in their content. the "wall street journal" said the ad free option could launch this fall and cost $12 to $14 a month. and at&t is using virtual reality in the fight against distracted driving. it is kicking off a 100-city tour with the virtual reality headset when they take their

eyes off the road to answer a phone call or text. it's all part of the at&t it can wait campaign. >> landon dowdy, thank you. researchers are testing an experimental ebola vaccine with the new prime boost immunization. the project is one of two different trial vaccines being tested in england france and senegal. the mid state trials are to primarily testing the safety. it carries safe viruses with part of the ebola virus that's supposed to stimulate the body's immune system. none of it contains liven ebola virus. a big court win for an alexandria man filing over the no fly list. he was stopped from boarding a flight back in 2011 and government lawyers tried to get it thrown out yesterday. they said it would be impossible to try the case without exposing state secrets about the process of putting people on the no fly list. the judge ruled that the lawsuit can move forward. immigrant community groups

are mobilizing to push for an end to frederick county's english only rule. in a few days the frederick county council is holding a hearing on this. english became the official language back in 2012. two council members introduced the bill to change that. tuesday's hearing in frederick county, maryland, is open to the public. two security guards were shot overnight at the central gardens apartments in capitol heights. one of those security guards has died. i'm megan mcgrath. a live report coming up.

we are on cindy lane and you can see that we still have crime tape up. cindy lane is closed but investigators at this point are focusing their attention down here, in the parking lot area of the central garden apartments. we have evidence markers on the ground. tape is up. they have been focusing on a couple of cars that are parked here in the lot. and we're told that two security guards overnight were shot here. one of those guards has died. and in talking with folks who live here they say there's a regular security presence here at this complex. >> the security is pretty much, you know, they walk around here and protect the neighborhood. and i can't imagine why anybody would kill a security officer. i can't imagine. >> reporter: and they're armed?
