gunshots. we are on cindy lane and you can see that we still have crime tape up. cindy lane is closed but investigators at this point are focusing their attention down here, in the parking lot area of the central garden apartments. we have evidence markers on the ground. tape is up. they have been focusing on a couple of cars that are parked here in the lot. and we're told that two security guards overnight were shot here. one of those guards has died. and in talking with folks who live here they say there's a regular security presence here at this complex. >> the security is pretty much, you know, they walk around here and protect the neighborhood. and i can't imagine why anybody would kill a security officer. i can't imagine. >> reporter: and they're armed? >> they are armed.

>> reporter: and as you just heard the guards are regularly armed. we don't know though whether there was any exchange of gun fire between the gunmen and those security guards. we just don't have that detail at this point. police don't have a lot that they're sharing. no word on a possible motive here or a lookout for any suspects. for a while we had a closure down on central avenue as well. 214. they had some evidence markers there. that has reopened. and traffic is now moving through the area but here at the apartment complex, they're going to be here for a while yet. now, we'll toss it over to melissa mollet with more on traffic. >> good morning, megan. so as megan just said, central avenue is now open. we were shut down, about a mile worth shut down for some time. overall, prince george's county

mohammed abdulazeez. police say he fired up to 30 shots yesterday. the fbi says abdulazeez fired all 30 shots from inside his car. he then drove seven miles to a navy marine training center. he left his car and killed four of those marines. a police officer and another person were also hurt in that shooting. the fbi is calling this attack domestic terrorism. this morning the bureau is digging into the life of the shooting suspect. agents searched mohammed abdulazeez's home and car yesterday. the 24-year-old grew up in tennessee, but a naturalized citizen from kuwait. federal officials say several years ago his father was investigated for a potential connection to a terror organization. nothing was found. coming up, we'll have a live report from tennessee with more on how investigators are looking into the suspect's social media activity. 6:03. the suspect in a july 4th murder will be in court, but today's court appearance for jasper

spires is in connection to a separate assault case. on july 2, he tried to rob a man, two days later police say spires stabbed kevin sutherland to death on a metro train. spires is due back in court next week. a maryland man will be sentenced in connection with the death of a pedestrian. james chandler enter an alford plea in the case. police say he hit and killed philip snodgrass while under the influence of pvp. snodgrass was walking on the sidewalk when struck by the vehicle that chandler was driving. chandler may face up to 30 years in prison. this morning we expect d.c. mayor muriel bowser to name a new chief for the dna testing lab. this comes at a troubled time for the facility. the last director was reportedly fired after a damning report on lab practices. "the washington post" reporting a former head of the fbi dna lab will be named a new director. and right now, police are trying to figure out how a woman lost control of her car and hit

and killed a woman of eight. maria posadas was hit on a sidewalk in montgomery county. this happened near randolph and veirs mill roads in wheaton. the 80-year-old driver lost control, hit a utility pole and then struck posadas. several pedestrians have been hit and killed by drivers in the same area. if you were in that area and you saw anything about this incident, police would like to hear from you. right now we have pictures in of a devastating tornado in illinois. this is the twister touching down in monmouth. this is near the iowa/illinois border. some 200 miles from chicago. the damage is very bad in a small town called cameron where they are not letting people back in to look at the damage. this is a silo in monmouth that actually came down because of the strength of this tornado. right now, search and rescue operations are going on in cameron and no one -- no word --

the good news no word of anyone hurt in the storm. back to you. >> thank you kristin. 6:06 now. gridlock in congress can mean your commute won't be much shorter any time soon. wtop reports that the big transportation projects could be put on hold if congress doesn't come up with new highway funding. that's according to virginia's transportation secretary. congress might end up passing a short term extension and that could keep construction going through the summer. things are moving forward for maryland's purple line. we have a tentative start date for construction. "the washington post" reports the maryland board of public works will choose a contractor by january 15th and construction would start on may 16 2016. the purple line would connect montgomery and prince george's counties. newly uncovered video showing the scene moments after a malaysia airlines plane was

we have breaking news right now at 6:15. prince george's county police are searching for whoever shot two security guards in capitol heights. here's a live look right now. with up of the guards died. neighbors say they heard about five gunshot at 1:00 a.m. at the central garden apartments. cindy lane is closed in the area. the guards at the complex are usually armed, but so far in this investigation it's unclear whether there was a shoot-out between the guards and the shooter. megan mcgrath is talking to police right now. we'll have an update in 15 minutes. suddenly, it was all trees and then it was fire.

>> we are hearing from a brave 16-year-old girl who lived through a small plane crash in washington state. she was flying home with her step grand parents who were killed when that plane flew into trees. after two nights alone in the woods she walked to safety and she's sharing her remarkable story of survival. >> i was so shocked. my instinct was to go straight downhill. i just felt a surge of willpower. it was like there's no way i can die without hugging somebody again. >> wow. autumn spent two nights in the forest and on day three she found a road and she found help. the trial of the colorado movie theater shooter is heading into the sentencing phase. the jury found james holmes guilty on 165 counts yesterday. he could be given the death penalty. but if a single juror disagrees with the death sentence he'll be sent to prison for life. holmes opened fire if a movie theater, killing 12 people and wounding dozens of others.

survivors of the attack were in the courtroom as the verdicts were read. new details about the brazen escape of a drug lord from a mexican prison. we are now hearing it was at least 18 minutes before anyone was alerted to the escape of el chapo guzman. that's according to two mexican lawmakers. we know the story now, that guzman sneaked into the mile-long tunnel saturday. and a massive manhunt is under way. mexico's interior minister says anyone who helped guzman will be punished. 6:17 now and the anger and the frustration were very obvious last night as federal workers as data was stolen confronted hundreds of agency staff. hundreds gathered for one-on-one help here and many questioned how effective credit monitoring could be since it only lasts for 18 months. we know this breach affected a lot of people in our area. if you're trying to safeguard your data from here on out, we

have a list of items on the app. just search for opm. d.c. police want you to look at this video right now. they're looking for the men who ransacked the 77th market and it happened last month. the suspects argued with the clerk before creating this mess. we posted the video on the washington app so you can look at it again. corrections officials are investigating the death of an inmate as a possible homicide. officers found the inmate dead yesterday morning and officials are waiting for the autopsy report. they did not find any signs of trauma. they're questioning the cell mates and other inmates as well. a montgomery county judge has left a man accused of first degree murder out of jail. dion sobotker is charged with jonathan harris' murder. harris was strangled during a robbery last december. judge baird decided to release

sobotker on the unsecured bond yesterday. that means he didn't have to pay to get out. judge baird says he doesn't believe the bail system is fair. prosecutors are frustrated with the judge's decision. >> because of the serious nature of the charge and the public safety concerns that we have with anyone charged with those kind of crimes it's something we want to care flyfully look at. >> harris lived through a kidney transplant and it was profiled on the "today" show. and trying to figure out what may have caused a house to explode. two men were rescued from that rubble. and then taken to the hospital. right now, they are both listed in critical but stable condition. a phone scam alert this morning. if you live in stafford county and you get a call from the sheriff's office asking for money, be alert. the sheriff office never solicits money over the phone. if you receive a call deputies would like to hear from you. this sounds pretty low, but it's true. an 18-year-old man behind bars for ripping off a lemonade

cruise oil cars when it derailed near cull bertson last night. most of the cars have been put upright. at least two are leaking oil. nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution. it's not clear why the train derailed in the first place. footage just released by australia that appears to show the immediate aftermath of the malaysian airlines flight mh17. that plane was shot down one year ago today. 298 people were killed there. this newly released footage was reportedly taken by separatists as they realized that downed plane was a commercial jet and not a ukrainian fighter jet. nbc news cannot independently verify the authenticity of this video. the museum is getting a big donation that could help improve what's been a rough year for the news yum. $5 million has been pledged. the officials say they have been focusing on increasing fund-raising over the past year.

that plus increased attendance has helped the newseum that has struggled. grandparents spoil their grandkids. that's standard operating procedure. we know how it works. there's some new research that says that could be a bad thing. it could be harmful for your grandkids' health. it's because grandparents tend to show affection by indulging a little bit. overfeeding. and sparing their grandchildren from physical chores too. british researchers say that children under the care of their grandparents were more than twi these children also consumed more junk food. >> yeah. sometimes you have to intervene, but the grandparents will say it's your job to lay down the rules and my job to spoil. you have to be the intermediary. >> there you go. >> that could work. teaching your children to share at a young age may help them on the road to success. that's according to a new study at pennsylvania state university. the study says kindergartners who share cooperate and are

someone shot two security guards outside the central gardens apartments. one is dead several roads closed in the area. this is why police investigate essentially two crime scenes that are just feet apart from each other. >> megan mcgrath just talked to police and she's on the scene gathering information. so megan, what are they telling you now? >> reporter: well, they're telling us that it's obviously early in the investigation. so there's not a lot of detail, but we have two victims here. they are security guards at the central garden apartment. if you look behind me now that we have the sun up you can get a better feel for the area where this took place. this is the parking lot right adjacent to the apartment complex here. you can see the investigators there in between those cars. we have evidence markers on the ground and they have been focusing their attention on several cars that are parked there along the trees. now there's also a second scene that was here earlier. just up these stairs here. this is cindy lane and that is

still closed as well. ofor a while, several hours they had central avenue 214 closed. they had some evidence markers down there as well. they have since reopened that road. but it's a rather large scene. a couple of different places where they're focusing their attention. now, this happened at around 1:00 in the morning. two security guards who work here at the apartment complex were shot. one of those security guards has died. talking to residents here they say they heard about five or so shots right around between 12:30 and 1:00 in the morning. they say there's a regular security presence here that they have security guards and that those guards are armed. it is unclear whether there was an exchange of gun fire between the gunmen and the security guards. that's all part of the investigation still, but one of those guards has been killed. and the second one is in the hospital suffering from gunshot wouchdz wounds. this is having a traffic impact in the area and as for -- and

here to install security cameras for some added protection. these crimes come during the muslim holy month of ramadan which ends later today. it raises a lot of suspicions this is more than a random act, it could be a possible hate crime. that's the latest live from manassas. i'm molette green back to you. we are learning that the man accused of a hit and run on suitland parkway had an open container of alcohol in his car. police say that tamekka pard low early died after she was ran over this week. paris was driving 40 miles per hour over the speed limit. early was working on a flat tire when she was hit. paris is charged with second degree murder and leaving the scene of a crash. the president of a popular chain of restaurants in maryland will go to jail after pleading guilty in a peeping tom case.

kyle muehlhauser was charged with secretly recording several women while using the bathroom. he pled guilty yesterday. the judge sentenced him to 90 days in jail. muehlhauser was arrested in february a few months after a woman found the small camera in a bathroom stall. terry mcauliffe rejecting calls from virginia house republican leaders for an invest into how planned parenthood clinics handle fetal organs. an anti-abortion group released a video showing a planned parenthood official discussing the disposal of body parts from aborted fetuses. it proves that the organization is breaking federal law by selling fetal tissue. planned parenthood said it only helps to donate to legal firms, not sell them. and there are closures starting this week. stations will be closed and buses will replace orange line trains. buses will replace blue and silver line trains between

new this morning japan's prime minister announcing the government will select an entirely new design for the 2020 tokyo olympic stadium. the current plans are being scrapped because of criticism from athletes and out of control costs. the building costs from up to $2 billion. the prime minister said he's confident the stadium will be finished in time for the games. google is going back to the drawing board with the self-driving car. three google employees suffered whiplash after the self-driving car was involved in an accident. it is the first accident for the car in which people were hurt. the car was rear-ended in california earlier this month. no one was seriously hurt. google says this was the 14th

we have breaking news right now in capitol heights. guards on the job and one has died. this happened in the middle of the night outside of an apartment complex. >> the investigators have been on the scene for hours now. as has news4's megan mcgrath. she's live with the latest. megan? >> reporter: well, good morning. just moments ago, some of the crime scene investigators walked behind us here with several evidence collection bags. three or four bags and just placed those bags into the evidence van there. it looked like one of the bags may have had tactical gear perhaps from one of the security guards who was shot here. investigators still on the scene. the parking lot by the central gardens apartment complex is still cordoned off.

this may have been an isits inspired attack. this all started yesterday morning around 10:45 where the gunman identified as mohammad youssuf abdulazeez opened fire at this military recruiting center, firing at least 25 rounds here before driving seven miles to that naval training center. a short distance away. that is where the four marines were killed and where the suspect died. now federal authorities say this gunman was not on their radar previously. he was not on any terror watch list, but neighbors described him as a polite young man, highly educated, an engineer. again investigators today will focus on trying to narrow down a motive here as this community is shaken. guys, back to you. >> gabe gutierrez live for us in chattanooga, thank you. today, the agents searched

strong tropical storm that's slamming the western part of the country. more than 23 inches of rain has fallen since it started yesterday. nearly 100,000 people have been asked to evacuate because of the threat of flooding and landslides. gridlock in congress could mean your commute won't be much shorter any time soon. our news partner wtop reports that local transportation projects like that big 66 expansion could be put on hold if congress doesn't come up with new highway funding. that's according to virginia's transportation secretary. congress might end up passing a short term extension. that could keep construction going through the summer. things are moving forward for maryland's purple line. we have a tentative start date for construction. "the washington post" is reporting that the state's board of public works will choose a contractor by january 15th and construction would start on may 16, 2016. it will the purple line would would connect montgomery and prince george's county. now 6:56. here are 4 things to know.
