fbi says mohammad youssuf abdulazeez had at least three guns on him and he was wearing a load-bearing vest that allowed him to move about while carrying all that extra ammunition. police ended the rampage when they shot and killed him but the big questions are why he did it and i isis. as investigators look for answers, we are learning more about the marines. the military convoy carried the remains of four marines from tennessee through virginia so they could be flown to do every, delaware. we start tonight with dave wagner in chattanooga. >> reporter: one day after a lone gunman left four marines dead, the memorials are growing and fbi technicians are still processing the crime scenes. sally bryar watched the shooter from her car with her stepson, talking to a recruiter inside. >> went back and forth like this, just shooting. and stopped, he reloaded and he did it again. >> reporter: 48 bullet holes late, the gunman drove seven miles in his mustang convertible to a marine reserve center where he rammed the fence and opened fire.

>> he did have at least two long gun, which would be considered rifles or shotguns and did he have one handgun. >> reporter: skip rel wells and thomas sullivan were two of the marines killed. >> we will not leave any stone unturned for the victims of this heinous and cowardly act. >> reporter: u.s. officials tell nbc news muhammad youssef abdulazeez was not on a terrorist watchlist. but he had a blog and posted three days before the shooting. . we will look at every possible aspect to include his use of social media. we obviously want to know what his thoughts were. >> reporter: all a shock to the gunman's friends. >> it's awful. i want people to know they want always like this. >> reporter: disbelief and grief. >> these were men that served their country. they gave everything they had yesterday to protect us. >> reporter: a city of southern

hospitality, still reeling from the darkest of days. nbc news has learned that the gunman took a trip to jordan from april to november of last year. his dad is from jordan, but investigators want to know if he traveled anywhere else in the middle east while he was there. they searched his home, they searched his car and investigators have taken all his electronic equipment. that has been sent to the fbi crime lab in quantico, virginia. in chattanooga, tennessee, dave wagner, nbc news. >> you heard dave mention a few of their names. we are learning a lot more about those four marines, three of them served overseas. their families never imagine they had could be killed right here at home. staff sergeant david wyatt was 37 years old. he was born in arkansas, studied at the university of montana. sergeant wyatt served in iraq and afghanistan and earned several awards, including the navy and marine corps achievement medal. he is survived by his wife and two children. lance corporal skip w 21. he attended georgia southern university and he was a georgia

native. skip's mother was in the marines. his family described him as a marching band nerd in high school. they say they just got out of boot camp about a year ago and enlisted in the marines to follow in he is footsteps. gunnery sergeant thomas sullivan grew up in springfield, massachusetts, survived two tours of duty in iraq and awarded the purple heart. people in springfield are being asked to lower the american flags to half-staff in his honor. we don't have a picture of the fourth marine but sergeant whom quest was from which is and deployed twice to afghanistan. the bodies of the marines killed in chattanooga yesterday are at manassas airport on their way to a dignified transfer at dover delaware. northern virginia bureau reporter david culver continues our coverage from there. >> reporter: doreen, just a somber evening here from prince william county. chris just showed you the face of a few of the marines who are fallen and now i can tell you

a woman pulled up the side of the road, pulled something out of her car i watched her unravel it american flag and decided on her own to walk up and to watch as that process was under watch she said that they are our fallen brothers our fallen marines and she just had to be out here to watch that. a short time after that they did take off from manassas regional airport, two black hemlicopters headed to dover air force base, as the dignified transfer that process gets under watchize mentioned that will be closed to the media. oftentimes, you see us up there covering those processes built family has asked that that not be the case for these four fallen marines. muslim families in our area

are coming together to celebrate the end of ramadan. they talked about what happened in tennessee and at 6:30, darcy spencer tells us what they fear could happen as a result of the shootingsome tonight, a local community is mourning the loss of a man who worked to keep their neighborhood safe. adrian kennard died after being shot while working as a security guard outside an apartment complex in capitol heights. >> reporter: her son was going to be a prince george's county police officer, take the test to do so in a couple of weeks and she was feeling very positive about that happening for him. the children in this community were the ones who put up a ign here saying rest in peace. it shows that this man is being mourned not just by his biological family but the family he created here at this apartment complex. >> didn't have to be like this. >> reporter: cynthia kennard is

planning to bury a second son killed by gun violence. the first son was murdered near their trinidad, d.c. neighborhood. >> my other son got killed on holbrooke in 2010. his birthday is tuesday. >> reporter: early this morning adrian kennard her last living son was shot and killed on his job. police say adrian keep hard in was a security guard at central gardens apartments in capitol heights heights. he was shot inside of his personal vehicle around 1 a.m. this morning on the apartment complex grounds. the same gray challenger that's seen posing on top of in this picture. his family says he is loved that car. another security guard was also shot near his red vehicle. he somehow managed to run away, reaching central avenue a few hundred yards down the block. >> these are conversations that any -- no parent will want to sit down and have with their children. >> reporter: this sign quickly hung by the kids who live in this apartment complex and the reaction of these children who stood nearby speaks to how people felt about kennard.

>> 'cause i play about my kids play football, especially the one that do got killed. he would interact with the kids all the time. >> reporter: he was the father of a 1-year-old girl. his family says he lived for her. >> he has a baby girl, yes. she is 1. he loved her. he loved his family. >> reporter: prince george's county police are still working to nail down a motive. they are still looking for suspects in this case. all they know is that a black charger was seen leaving this apartment complex this morning. they are offering a $25,000 reward for any information that can lead to an arrest in this case. in capitol heights i'm tracee wilkins, back to you in the stud grow. new video just in at 6:00, police in prince george's county need help finding the man your bea to see. they say he maybe connected to an assault on a police officer in oxon hill. investigators say the officer was at a gas station thursday and he walked up to a stolen

car. the driver inside punched the gas and hit him and then took off. the officer will be okay but so far, they haven't made any arrests. we now know more about a man who was killed in a shooting in springfield. police say he is 25 years old a his name is mohammed mow sheen nash sheen found lying on the stairs of a house on corbin creek court. he had a gunshot wound and later died at a hospital. officers did arrest a man and they think the here is the and nash sheen knew each other, but respect sure what led to the shooting. turning to our weather now, not bad out there now but there are dangerous conditions headed our way. veronica is in storm center four to tell us more about you the approaching heat wave. >> organizers for this weekend, different things taking place, already trying to get ahead of this letting folks know to make sure they are prepared they hydrate and bring extra water. dining out this evening, it's not bad at all. we are seeing the clouds thin a

director. the news comes at a critical time for the lab. work has been suspended there since april after two scathing reports found fundamental problems at the lab. dr. smith has been working as a consultant to help fix those issues. >> she ran the dna lab at the fbi. she worked in counterterrorism at weapon of mass destruction-type research at the cia. she has also been at a forensics department at a university. >> auditors will return to the lab in november to reassess what's happening there. the city those lift suspension by the beginning of next year. a local mosque targeted twice in one week, but there are questions about who's behind it and why they are doing it. a mother of eight was struck and killed by an elderly driver on this sidewalk as she was trying to get home. maria poe sad doughs came to this country for a better life. coming up at 6:00 why her death means her family will now have to struggle even more. and an independent school

a northern virginia mosque has been targeted twice in one week. tonight, as police search for suspects there are new efforts to beef up security to try to make sure it doesn't happen again. news4's molette green has more from the manassas muslim

association temple. >> this is where the coolant has drained out. now this unit is done. >> reporter: the latest apparent act of vandalism took out an ac unit. workers just fixed it after someone cut into its pipes and the one right beside it just days ago. >> this was monday morning. >> reporter: worshippers discovered the second incident, including an electrical box found pried open during evening prayers. two times in the same week during prayers at this manassas mosque. and some no longer doubt the motive. >> i am starting to believe that it's a hate crime because somebody is -- knows what they are doing. they are frying to send a message. >> reporter: it's easy to get access to all three air conditioning units from the road, so the mosque is now fast tracking its own security plan to add lighting and cameras. >> not sure tilt whether there's a bias notetive.

concerned is this maybe an example of the most up preventable of terrorist-style attacks that could be taking place and while they are still trying to put together the evidence, full fledged an act of terrorism whatever you want to call it but this is the style of attack they are most concerned about, because this is the style of attack that is hardest to stop and this maybe the perfect example how hard it is to stop, not a huge trail digital trail will follow not exactly a history of trying to get involved with, say isis or things like that, that it truly is sort of home grown of sorts, lone wolfish and that this is what makes them extremely concerned. throw in this fact and you are not going to hear a public official say this out loud, but privately, they are saying this we may be experiencing a new normal here in america, where the idea of a low to middle level threat of terrorism is always around the corner somewhere. not high-scale, not huge

it's been a year now since malaysian airlines flight 17 was shot down over ukraine. new video has just meermed that shows what appears to be the immediate aftermath of that disaster. we are just seeing these pictures for the first time as people around the world pay tribute to the victims. nbc's barry arent reports. >> reporter: in a solemn procession, residents of ukrainian village where flight mh-17 went down a year ago marched to the crash site. in kiev, mourners, including members of the ukrainian parliament, paid tribute to the victims of the disaster by laying flowers at the dutch embassy. and half a world away, the australian prime minister remembered the savagery of the attack as he unveiled a plaque

in canberra. >> so, now, we owe it to the dead to bring the guilty to justice. >> reporter: but the commemorations take place while the dispute continues over who's responsible for downing the malaysian airliner heading from amsterdam to kuala lumpur on july 17, 2014. the plane was downed by a missile fired either by the separatists or russian troops, who they say backed the rebels with weapons and manpower. the rebels in moscow say the plane was hit by a ukrainian warplane or a ukrainian-fired missile. video has emerged showing what appears to be the direct aftermath of the plane crash. the footage was obtained by the newscorps australia media company, although nbc cannot guarantee its accuracy. the media company said the footage was filmed by separatist rebels at the crash site as they began to realize the downed plane was a commercial plane and not a ukrainian air force

fighter jet. newscorp says this footage was handed over to a multinational joint investigation team this week. a dutch-led criminal investigation into the crash is expected to be completed by the end of the year. barry arent, nbc news. a 16-year-old survived a plane crash and lived to tell her story. >> they were both screaming, i was trying to help them, suddenly, it was just all trees and then it was fire. and i was really shocked. my instinct was to go street down hill. autumn veatch was flying home with her stepgrandparents last week. they didn't survive but she made it down the mountain foraged through the woods, all while dealing with the burns and effects of the crash. she is going to miss her grand parents terribly and she is getting newfound respect for life. our coverage of the killings in tennessee continues. tonight, the questions about a

now at 6:30, a teacher at a local private school arrest and accused of sexually abusing students. why he's out of jail on bond despite the serious nature of the crime. a mother of eight hit and killed while waiting for a bus. why her death is taking an even heavier tool on her family tonight. and members of the local muslim community react to the deadly shootings in ten as they mark the end of a solemn religious holiday. tonight, we have reporters working new angles to all those stories but we are going to start with the tragedy in tennessee. >> the motive still unknown tonight but there's no mystery surrounding the impact this is having across the country and here at home. start with jim handly at the live desk. >> several new details coming into the live desk, nbc news justice concern pete williams just found out what kinds of guns were used in the attack. intelligence officials tell them mohammad youssuf abdulazeez was arm armed with an ak-47,

9-millimeter happened gun and shotgun, wearing a load-bearing vest stocked with extra ammo and learned that abdulazeez took five trims to jordan beginning in high school. his family is from there, but the trip that will be looked at most closely is one he took last year that lasted for seven months. and an ohio elect utility says tonight that abdulazeez was hired as a engineer at a nuclear power plant back in 2013 but only had the job for ten days because he failed the background check. as you know, the four marines he is accused of killing are on their way to dover for a dignified transfer. at the top of the hour choppers carrying the marines took off from manassas airport for the final leg of that trip. finally, we just learned that oklahoma's governor just issued a executive order authorizing the national guard to arm full-time personnel, including recruiters at installations across the state.

doesn't really preach hate and it doesn't you know, you know, it's all about love and it's all about you know family and worshipping something you believe n. >> i don't see that as part of our faith. our religion teaches us to, you know, pick up pieces of glass from the path that people walk in. >> reporter: authorities say kuwaiti-born mohammad youssuf abdulazeez may have been inspired by isis when he opened fire at a military reserve center. he died in a shootout with police. muslims. told us islam is a peaceful religion. >> our thoughts and prayers are with theed one of the fallen marines who dedicated their lives in service to our country. >> reporter: council on american islamic relations joined with islamic leaders in maryland to condemn the attacks. they say american muss litsch are patriotic and now fear retaliation. this type of behavior is reprehensible to the degree that all muslims denounce this type of violence within our community. >> this is something that's very

she did the best she could raise the eight children that she has, but it was just yesterday that she died on this sidewalk behind me here. her family says they are heartbroken and not sure how they are going to make it without her. we spoke with them today with the help of a translater. luised me deep nah doesn't speak english. but sore reand pain doesn't need translation. luis is here working at a grocery store one day after the woman he called his soulmate, 45-year-old maria posadas was struck and killed by a driver thursday morning just yards away from a store. montgomery county police say somehow, an 83-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle on self-ridge road in randolph, striking a utility pole before slamming into marie yoont sidewalk. luis works today because he has to. his family, he says, needs the money to make ends meet, so they are collecting donation in the

store. but back at maria's house, where three of her eight kids live, along with her three grandchildren, there is still disbelief that she is gone. >> her son is a very kind and happy person. >> reporter: maria's son, darwin, says her mother loved her family so much that she left honduras to give them a better life. >> they came here to have american dream and to help family. >> reporter: maria's dreams were cut short on thursday morning. now it's up to her children to fulfill them for her. montgomery county police say the 83-year-old driver was treated and leased from the hospital. they say the investigation is ongoing so charges are pending. doreen? >> meagan fitzgerald thank you. help for hundreds of businesses imbecomed by the recent riots in baltimore. how a maryland casino is stepping in to help foot some of the bills.

helping businesses rebuild after the rioting in baltimore. horseshoe casino donated $50,000 to the business recovery fund. nearly 400 businesses were affected by the riots back in april. the money from the recovery fund will go toward zero interest loans. so far, six loans have been awarded totaling nearly $142,000. final preparations are under way to reopen the cuban embassy here in washington. on monday morning, officials will unveil a new plaque and raise the cuban flag over 16th street northwest. six months ago, president obama announced that he was restoring diplomatic ties with cuba after five decades of hostility. no word on when the american embassy will open in havana but experts say a lot of work to be done between the two countries but this is a start. >> i think we have a much better

a local private school teacher is accused of sexually assaulting two students an police fear there may be more victims. justin gordon taught at connolly school of the homely child in potomac. new tonight, chris gordon has details of the arrest and why the man was released on bond despite the serious charges. >> reporter: here at the connolly school of the holy child, justin gordon worked as a computer lab assistant. when the school received a report last week that he inappropriately touched two

young student, one as early as 2012, the school fired gordon. in court documents the first victim says gordon came to her house in february. he brought her flowers made her different dessert and stayed to watch movies. she and gordon cuddled on the couch. on another occasion in the school's mac lab gordon allegedly groped her. two days ago, another young woman came forward reporting gordon kissed her in the school chapel and said she should not tell anyone because he would be fired. >> essentially, date their daughter. this is a 40-year-old man. >> reporter: connolly school of the holy child sent us a statement -- today a judge imposed bond at $50,000 unsecured which means gordon doesn't have to put up the money. gordon and his wife lived had which is mother at his home in

poolesville, maryland. >> he is, i believe, the sole support for that family, they want him to be home and apparently, the judge is going to allow him to be home. >> reporter: police want to know if any other students here at holy child may have been touched inappropriately by teacher justin gordon. holy child says that the well being of its entire community is of utmost importance is and it continues to cooperate with the police. in potomac, chris gordon, news4. it was once the mall to go to in montgomery county. we are getting a unique look inside what is now a barren white flint mall. mike perk shot this video with the help of a drone and it went viral on social media. the walls are gone now the stores demolished and the escalators ripped apartment. the mall of opener, learner, says it should get complete demolition permits in a week or two it will be redeveloped into a mixed use area.
