tractor-trailer apparently fell asleep and slammed into six riders in greensboro. arnie morris was also killed. the truck driver daniel serna is facing felony hit and run charges for not stopping after the crash. this according to police. still trying to get the name of the motorcyclist killed in a crash in gaithersburg. look at the scene here. the 35-year-old cyclist when a car made a u-turn and hit him saturday night and the biker died at the hospital yesterday morning. the driver stayed at that scene. montgomery county police say they're still looking into the crash. no word yet this morning on whether or not that driver will face any charges. maryland governor larry hogan is undergoing his second round of chemotherapy right now. he started his round of treatment yesterday. hogan has stage 3 non-hodgkins lymphoma and said he'll be working from the hospital while undergoing chemo. rutherford is also filling in and making some appearances. new video this morning of

the damage left behind by a bridge collapse in california. we have some incredible video from the live desk this morning. it's a bridge on i-10 there on interstate -- in southern california. washed away by some of the worst flooding that area has seen in a long time. you see that black car there hanging over the edge. one person was hurt. several others stranded. this again some of the worst flooding this area has seen in a very long time. san diego getting the most amount of rain they have ever gotten in the month of july. again, california though going through a severe drought, much needed rain, but definitely not what people there are expecting. back to you. a look at how hot it's going to get where you live. >> that's right. let's check in with tom kierein. >> right now it is mild, it is muggy and in addition to that high heat we'll get this afternoon, we have got poor air quality.

along. 95 and b.w. parkway, 29 looking quite good. beltway at river rolling along. remember this, in rockville, randolph road between nebel and parklawn, you can't get through that area because of some road work. that's not going to wrap up until saturday. back in a few. >> thanks. well, this morning we're learning new information about the suspected gunman in those deadly military attacks in tennessee. mohammad youssuf abdulazeez's family said they sent him to jordan last year. a spokesman says his parents were hoping the trip would get him away from drugs and alcohol. the family also said the accused gunman suffered from depression. meanwhile, one of the marines hurt in the shooting is back home this morning. the families of five men killed are remembering them as heros. >> my son is a hero. he died doing what he loved. he knew no other way. he's my hero since the day i gave birth to him. >> as the families prepare for the funerals lawmakers are making recruiting offices safer.

governors took action this weekend to work on arming recruiting officers. this week marks 20 years since the gulf murders in potomac, maryland. it shocked montgomery county shocked the country. a day laborer alvarez was tried and convict and he was sentenced to six life sentences. i'm following a developing story in afghanistan right now. this is about 30 miles from the capital of kabul. we know that nato air strikes afghan officials say have killed eight -- eight afghan soldiers and two -- at two check points. the u.s. military only saying this is under investigation. we know that security in the area has deteriorated recently

with the taliban stepping up strikes there. eight afghan soldiers killed in that area. the u.s. saying it's only under investigation. angie? >> thank you, kristin. today, the united nations security council is expected to approve the landmark deal over iran's nuclear program. now, that u.n. will likely start rolling back sanctions that have hurt iran's economy. those sanctions -- or that deal we should say, the sanctions can be put back in place if iran doesn't hold up its end of the deal. this comes as u.s. defense secretary ashton carter arrives in israel. leaders are furious over the plan. we are working to learn what caused an explosion at a government lab, this in gaithersburg. it happened on saturday night. an agency spokesperson confirmed the blast but not what sparked it. we're told a security guard is recovering this morning. and i st is run by the commerce department. this afternoon we'll know a

lot more about how metro plans to work with local fire and rescue crews in the future. metro is holding a press conference on the new fire and rescue liaison person. that person will help coordinate between other agencies. this comes after a woman died from smoke at l'enfant plaza. we know that montgomery county is trying to save more than $50 million in next year's budget. today, we expect to hear more about how the county executive plans to do that. today, two communities will meet to discuss the plans and the county is making spending cuts in part because recent tax revenues have not been as high as expected. the council has to make a final decision in more than a week. today hundreds of volunteers are working to make arlington national cemetery look as good as possible. the renewal and remembrance landscaping project starts this morning. volunteers will be updating wiring. they'll be putting in hundreds of new trees. children are planting some flowers. that begins at 7:30 this

montgomery county. rockville leaders want you to weigh in on what to do with the statue honoring confederate soldiers. it's in the rockville town center right now. confederate flags and monuments across the country have faced increasing criticism since nine people were killed in south carolina last month. the meeting is at city hall, it happens today at 6:00 p.m. a court deposition by bill cosby details how the tv actor and comedian had several affairs with several women. and the documents obtained by "the new york times," cosby admits that paying a woman off to not tell his wife what he was doing. cosby said he was good at reading nonverbal signals when a woman would consent to sex. the decade old deposition from a lawsuit filed by a temple university student who accused him of drugging and molesting her. cosby has not been charged with any crime. so if you're getting ready to hit the road you'll want the

know your drive time forecast. >> that's right. for that, we'll turn it over to tom kierein standing by in the storm team 4 weather center. >> good morning. another heat advisory just issued and it includes our entire metro area, northern virginia, the eastern shore. it's in effect from noon until al -- 8:00 p.m. as the temperatures climb into the mid 90s by the mid afternoon. we'll have the heat index climbing as well. up into the low to mid 100s. dry roads, but it will be steamy. you will need the a.c. on even now to stay comfortable. then during the afternoon hitting the mid 90s. definitely need that a.c. on. partly cloudy, only a slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm. a look at a break coming from the high heat and humidity next weather and traffic on the 1s at 4:51. melissa has another road closure. >> this one between washington boulevard and glebe road.

this just in to the live desk. for the first time in three weeks, banks in greece are finally open. greeks saw their banks close at the end of june because of the financial collapse there in greece. banks today opening back up, but with restrictions. for example, customers won't be able to cash checks. they can only deposit them. this -- banks are able to open back up after greek parliament passed an agreement just last week to seek a third bailout. the european central bank was able to raise its emergency funding to the banks to allow them to reopen today. he's a war hero because he was captured. >> right now, presidential candidate donald trump doubling down on those comments about senator and former prisoner of war john mccain. in a "usa today" opinion piece, trump says mccain has abandoned american veterans.

and as you know, this is just the latest round of trump's comments and backlash. nbc's tracie potts is with us now from capitol hill and tracie, we're starting to see a shift in dynamics among republicans when it comes to condemning trump. >> reporter: well, unlike what we saw with immigration, angie, where some stayed silent on the issue, we saw a number of candidates are now coming out calling these comments offensive ridiculous and in that op-ed overnight in the "usa today," not only did he make those comments about mccain when it comes to his policy he said that he has abandoned veterans, made our country less safe. he also complained there that he was being lectured by what he calls failed politicians. some of those republicans running against him said that trump is not fit to run for the highest office in the land based on those comments. we heard that from rick perry and marco rubio. bobby jindal criticized judge --

trump saying that he can't say anything about mccain, because trump never served in the military. we'll hear more on msnbc, interviews with both donald trump and the first reaction from john mccain. >> yeah. definitely trump will have something to say about that. we know that. thank you, tracie potts. as you mentioned we are going to hear directly from trump not only on msnbc, but also this morning on the "today" show. he is joining us in the 7:00 a.m. hour. an arsonist caught in the act on camera attacking a piece of lgbt art work. you can see the surveillance video. caught the man splashing something on this mural. this is in san francisco's mission district. then he set it on fire. this happened ahead of the gay pride exhibition last month. the family of a woman who died in jail now demanding an independent autopsy.

investigators say sandra bland hanged herself in the cell in texas last week. texas state police said she was arrested for kicking a state trooper who pulled her over. plandz's family does -- bland's family doesn't buy it. they don't believe it was a suicide. and investigating how a man died after an encounter with police officers. a houston police officer was trying to help a man inside a convenience store. when the officer offered to call an ambulance the man became combative according to police. the officer called for backup. several officers detained the man. during the ride to the hospital the man lost consciousness, eventually died. houston police saying they're reviewing surveillance videos from the store to find out what happened. we are now learning how much it's going to cost to fix all of virginia's bridges, roads and potholes. more than $10 billion. our news partner wtop reports that is the estimate given to the commonwealth's transportation board this week. virginia is aiming for more achievable goals though. virginia's department of transportation would spend about

$760 million in the next two years and spend another $832 million for bridges next year. by about this time next year, you can see police in prince william wearing body cameras. it's partnering with fairfax county's police team to learn more. the departments hosted an expo last week with 35 vendors. today many are up in pittsburgh for the annual vf convention. the convention provides lots of resources, workshops, veterans around the country. the u.s. secretary of veterans affairs will speak there. right now, dr. jill biden is in vietnam. she is visiting four countries in asia. this is the second one and she sat down with vietnam's vice president. this was yesterday. they talked about the role of women there. today she's going to visit an orphan orphanage and a temple. president bush is waking up back at home this morning.

the 41st president was released from the hospital yesterday. he was treated for a broken bone in his neck which he suffered after taking a spill at his home in maine. his neurologist said that type of fracture is actually common with seniors and with falls. president bush is 91 years old and luckily he didn't have to have surgery. >> luckily for him. 4:50 right now, and as you see right there it's a weather alert day. another hot, humid one out there. >> we are smack in the middle of the heat wave and the big question is, tom kierein, when is it all going to end? >> we do see some relief in sight. it's so humid that angie's dress was all one color when she got in here. >> the flowers are withering. >> yeah. the tropical flowers exploded on her desk, and i have mushrooms under my lapel. it is so humid and steamy. the feels like temperature by noontime is going to be near 100. with the humidity and the temperature and then it will feel like maybe 102, 103 right in the district. much of the region will have that heat feels like temperature

over 100 during the afternoon. then even into the evening hours, that feels like temperature will still be generally in the mid to upper 90s. and we've got a big area under heat advisory because of that combination of the heat and the humidity. it includes the counties in orange. northern virginia, metro area in effect from noon until 8:00 p.m. and we have an air quality alert. all these counties in gray in the metro area, southern maryland. the rest of north central maryland and the eastern shore. that's due to high ozone levels in the atmosphere. code orange. any children or elderly that are -- that definitely have a heart or respiratory ailment should stay inside. if you have asthma stay inside this afternoon. it is mild and muggy in the 70s to low 80s around the metro area. right near the bay waters. the water temperatures are near 80. by noon, the low 90s and then mid 90s mid afternoon.

into the water. probably a good idea. instead, fanning and wilson shared first place. >> wow. well top health researchers are meeting in d.c. today. they are talking about alzheimer's and how to identify and treat it. there are six things that can predict if someone will get alzheimer's. they include a memory test in the final fluid measurement. another study says you can look at someone's saliva to find out if they'll get that disease. and in maryland you can learn how to administer the drugs that reverses a heroin overdose. the st. mary's county health department is offering two free classes about naloxone today. one is at the recovery center at 5:30. the final session is thursday at the county health department headquarters at 1:00 p.m. the classes are free, but organizers are asking you rescue ahead of time. a search for a new president at the university of mary washington kicking into high

gear. the presidential search committee is meeting tomorrow to work through its next moves. now, the meeting is open to the public, but the committee says it isn't taking any public comments tomorrow. the outgoing president is retiring next year. and virginia college enrollment could soar 7%. this by 2021. that would mean 475,000 undergrad students. last year, around 442,000 undergrads. it will happen at a meeting tomorrow that they'll crunch the numbers. the goal is to award more degrees and credentials by 2030. they're hoping this is going to keep the state of virginia on track. >> for sure, yeah. all right, 4:58. stay with us.
