became combative during a traffic stop. today we could see one of the last big names enter the republican field. ohio governor john kasich is expected to announce a presidential bid in columbus. he is not to be overlooked. he's from a critical swing state and enjoys generally high approval ratings. kasich is also very good at raising money. two groups have already brought in more than $10 million for him. now, one of the big questions surrounding all of this though is whether donald trump will overshadow today's announcement. last week he stole a lot of attention from scott walker. he's still carrying that baggage from his comments about john mccain. in a few minutes we'll talk to nbc's tracie potts about the realtime impact this is having on the polls. a federal police lieutenant resigned following an explosion at a government lab in maryland.

the blast happened at the national institute of standards and technology in gaithersburg on saturday. sources say firefighters and police saw the lieutenant throw something in the trash and then put a duffel bag into his car. when investigators noticed he had burns on his hands, he said they came from filling a butane lighter. the explosion involved chemicals that are used to make meth. we are working to find out more about an accident that left a fairfax county boy dead. three others are seriously hurt and remain in the hospital. that crash happened before 7:00 yesterday morning outside of charlottesville when a car and an suv crashed head on. 4:35. d.c. police arrested more than two dozen men in a prostitution bust in d.c. 30 men are facing charges now. now, this comes as jack evans introduced a bill last week nicknamed honey i lost the car. it would require police to tow a car if officers have probable

cause that the driver may have picked up a prostitute. 4:36. montgomery county police arrested a man they say posed as a police officer years ago. this is the man, he's 24 years old. they say the man pretended to be an officer back in 2012. they say he met a woman from the internet, then handcuffed her and took her to the hotel in silver spring. he then sexually assaulted her according to police. investigators say they tracked down macedo through a hit on the database. d.c. police need your help finding this man. they say he sexually assaulted a woman in the district. here he is the attack happened in an alley on 19th street near bening road yesterday morning. we could learn more about what happened when freddie gray died in police custody in baltimore. a judge ruled evidence in the case can be shown to the public. the baltimore state's attorney wanted to prevent it from being released. gray died of a severe spinal injury in a van back in april

welcome back. you have been warned. fairfax is adding another red light camera. there's a new red light camera on plantation parkway. it will start snapping pictures of red light runners next monday. if your vehicle runs that red light you'll receive your fine in the mail. pepco says you can save some money by helping them prevent a major outage. the power company wants maryland customers to conserve energy today between the hours of 2:00 and 6:00 p.m. if you do manage to cut down on your power use, you could get a credit on your next bill. and the way this is done, if you use below a specified time you save $1 on the usage. >> i'll take that money. let's see how much you need the a.c. today. tom? >> you need it this morning because of the humidity and the temperatures hovering in the 70s to around 80s. a few showers here. a few flashes of lightning near

campaign against president obama and certainly if there was a misunderstanding i would totally take that back. >> that is donald trump last night on fox news trying to make it clear he does respect arizona senator john mccain's public and military service. polls are now hinting that trump's fiery comments are not doing over well with his party. he surged in recent weeks, and he's topping this brand-new poll but it was conducted before and after trump's comments. after trump slammed mccain his support began to fall among those who were polled. we'll have more on this with tracie potts on capitol hill in a few minutes. today, president obama faces a busy schedule. he will head to pittsburgh this morning and he'll be speaking at the veterans of foreign wars 116th national convention. yesterday he signed a bill that will allow all honorably discharged veterans to get an i.d. card so they can prove

their status. then he'll head to new york for the seventh appearance on "the daily show with jon stewart." and then he travels to the country of kenya the home country of his father. kenyans have been patiently waiting for the president to make a homecoming since the election in 2008. but the president faces criticism in that country despite his ancestral ties. many think the obama administration is falling behind in his investment in africa. >> i think he has done a lot of things. we have been waiting for him for a long time. he has never came, but it's his mother country. >> according to economic experts in kenya, the president does not have a key achievement in the country. the president will also visit ethiopia during his trip. 4:46. back to decision 2016 and donald trump and the impact some of his comments having on -- is having on the poll numbers right now

going into the presidential race. tracie potts on capitol hill for us this morning with more on donald trump as he gets ready to head to south carolina. >> reporter: exactly. he's taking his message to south carolina and some frustration too from republicans and veterans. we'll hear more about that today, aaron when president obama addresses the vfw convention, where a lot of vets say they're upset with what donald trump had to say about john mccain not being a war hero. then saying he was a war hero. only because he was captured. mccain last night in new york did not defend himself, but another republican, lindsey graham, he defended john mccain saying he is in fact an american hero. and those poll numbers you were talking about, the latest is "the washington post"/abc poll that shows trump with 24% support, almost twice as much as governor walker of wisconsin. the next republican behind him. however, this is telling. most of that poll was conducted before the mccain comments. if you take a look at the small

portion that was conducted afterwards, donald trump loses quite a bit of support. so we'll have to wait for the next big poll to come out to see just w standing right now as a front-runner in many national polls in the republican race. >> all right, we'll be watching. tracie potts, thank you. 4:48 your time right now. we learned about a second piece of evidence linking a man to the quadruple murder in washington, d.c. daron wint had a preliminary hearing yesterday. his dna was found on a pizza crust and at the hearing wint's dna was on a construction vest in one of the victim's cars. the detectives said that police recovered three-quarters of a $40,000 ransom in this case. a boy pointed what looked like a rifle at fbi investigating the shooting in

chattanooga. they found a possible connection to the shooter at an apartment. and when they got there a 15-year-old pointed a rifle at them and it turned out to be an air gun. he had an air soft pistol with him as well. that's a new kind of response to the shooting. the video shows volunteers guarding recruiting centers in alabama and georgia. the military is increasing security and several are moving to equip national guard troops with guns. the department of defense said it's not planning to arm army reservists. police accuse an 80-year-old man of inappropriately touching a boy. he was in locker room when saadollah ghaussy approached him. he was charged with indecent exposure. it happened in the westcott ridge place on sunday. you have a chance to weigh in on whether frederick county will change the english only rules. the english only ordinance has

been in place three years. one of the council members sponsoring repeal says the ordinance has tarnished the county's reputation. virginia governor terry mcauliffe is asking a study to ask to reinstate parole for nonviolent felons. they say that the current criminal justice works by keeping violent criminals behind bars. it's been 20 years since virginia abolished parole. they'll make recommendations by november 2. d.c. leaders are hoping parents can help stop underaged drinking. a survey by the department of health shows 22% of teens say they have used alcohol before age 13. 6% of boys 11 or younger, say they drink alcohol. that's according to the 2012 survey. the district launched a new campaign called there's a reason. the federally funded program targets parents through pamphlets and outreach activities. more momentum for sweet

thundershower. you know when they're on capitol hill, they play hard ball. we are getting a few thundershowers not really nasty storms. happening right now in west virginia, where you see the little patches of the yellow and the orange and red. that's where there are some downpours near elkins and there's another little batch here coming into western maryland right near frostburg. that's headed off to the east. around the metro area, don't have any rain right in washington. but there are a few showers south of annapolis near shadyside and down near the calvert border. that is tracking east across the bay. it will be moving on over to the eastern shore. our temperatures are mild and muggy, in the mid to upper 70s. near 80 by the bay. reagan national at 85. that's because it's picking up the warm waters of the potomac.

as we look going hour by hour, new model timing showing some of the thundershowers will be near hagerstown and then passing near frederick by around 2:00. but then the thundershowers begin to get closer to the metro area. mainly south of washington by around 4:00 p.m. and then after that they move off to the east. very low risk of any tornadoes. only low to moderate risk of maybe high winds or very low risk of hail. little greater threat maybe of some brief heavy downpours as they move on through. then the relief comes in. hallelujah. it arrives tomorrow, low humidity. beautiful summer day. on wednesday and thursday, with highs in the 80s and low humidity and the same thing on friday. three or four days in a row, even nice on saturday too. with not very humid conditions in the upper 80s. then more humid on sunday. could get an afternoon storm on sunday into sunday evening. then up near 90 on monday and quite humid. now let's check on the tuesday

dale neighborhood. right now, a new sign outside the space where nova firearms wanted to open. that store space is located inside an arlington strip mall off lee highway. some customers threatened to stop shopping at other businesses if that gun shop opened. >> it was just not necessarily a good fit for the other businesses that are in this shopping center which are flowers, yoga, nails. >> now, neighbors of the proposed shop also say there are several schools nearby. parents were worried about a gun store so close to the kids. well it could cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars to send your child to a good public elementary school in the district. d.c.'s office of revenue saying buying a home in a high-performing school area will cost you anywhere between $700,000 to $1 million. high performing elementary schools have at least 80% of students proficient in reading, and it will run you at least $650,000.

in "news4 your health" right now a new study says angelina jolie's public battle with cancer did influence how some women screen for breast cancer. researchers put together an online questionnaire three days after jolie announced in 2013 she tested positive for the brack 1 gene. 7% said they would definitely get tested. jolie went on the have a double mastectomy. her ovaries and fallopian tubes were also removed. the next story is what some people are calling karma. a website that specializes in helping married people cheat was hacked. well, private information from ashley madison's 37 million customers most of whom would presumably remain anonymous have been posted online. there's not been a widely publicized list of names.

nbc news spoke to a cyber security expert who notes it's difficult for many people to find sympathy for the victims in this case. >> it's treated totally differently because it's the type of situation where you have this company that's you know, has some questionable ethics on what they're doing, so people have the attitude of it serves them right but the reality is the people have the expectation of privacy and they should have maintained that level of security they expected. >> you can look for a full report on this, including how the website is dealing with the hack coming up on "today." i feel like on the flip side, you have to know when you go to a business where they make their money off you -- you come here to have an affair this is a blackmailer's dream, okay? and the possibilities -- >> there would be legal things in place to keep the website from black mailing you but everybody you, it becomes fair game. that's the truth with anything you put out there. >> it has people
