in texas are saying about glitches in their dash cam reporting. what a beautiful day in the neighborhood across the area. plenty of sunshine. low humidity. just how long is that going to last? i have got your forecast. breaking right now the charleston shooting church suspect has been indicted on federal hate crime charges. attorney general loretta lynch announced this indictment moments ago but we have been expecting it since dylann roof was arrested last moment. roof admits he shot and killed nine black parishioners at emanuel ame and prosecutors haven't said if they will seek the death penalty. now at 4, an fbi with a new label for the gunman who killed five u.s. troops in chattanooga. they are calling mohammad youssuf abdulazeez a home-grown violent extremist. special agents say he acted alone, without help from anyone else. and for the first time investigators release a timeline of the events at the second site of the shooting. our report on that is just ahead

in about 15 minutes. right now, things are running smoothly on the red line after a bizarre mishap. a metro train hit a powerline between grosvenor and medical center. metro officials say a public works employee hit a pole with a lawnmower and that caused a penn coe wire to hang in the train's path. nobody was hurt but they had to single track between the two stations for a while and about 1400 people lost power. a plea deal rejected. the pilot that landed that gyro couldn'ter on the u.s. capitol turned down another deal today, this one would have sent him to jail for ten months. an attorney for douglas hughes says he believes federal guidelines call for a sentence of zero to six months. hughes says -- his light back in april was meant to call attention to the influence of big money in politics a new hearing is now set for the first week of august. first at 4, presidential politics, donald trump is heading to texas to tour the u.s./mexico border.

nbcwashington.com. search walk with francis. i'm meagan fitzgerald in montgomery county where a man who has been harassing his neighbors for years is finally in police custody. went before a judge today and was denied bond. the montgomery county sheriff's department says he violated a peace order against his neighbor and was sentenced to anger management classes. investigators say he lied about attending the courses and falsified documents. he was charged with perjury and obstruction of justice but never showed up for sentencing and was on the run. two weeks ago, deputies located him, though say took pills and was in a psychiatric hospital until he was released tuesday afternoon. at 5:00, what prosecutors say would be an appropriate punishment. the humidity dial finally got turned down just a few notches. doug, i got a feeling folks are going to try to enjoy this while it lasts. big story is going to be as we move on through the night tonight, what kind of temperatures we are going to be seeing. we are going to see the coolest

seriously wounded by a bear. it happened tuesday night bluey, a rescue dog owned by richard kelly and his family, appears to have wounds and claw marks on her left side. their vet trip nairian says these wounds are consistent with an attack by a bear from a defensive mode. richard kelly is concerned. >> i cannot have my children playing out here shooting hoops, running around my own front yard after dark until this problem is solved. >> reporter: we will hear what fairfax county animal services says they plan to do coming up on news4 at 5:00. that's the latest from fairfax county. back to you. >> thanks, chris. our consumer watch team has reported extensively about the dangers of backyard deck and today we got another reminder of why you need to take precautions. five people were hurt in howard county when a deck collapsed late last night. inspectors went back to the scene in the brook side

townhomes today. they found the rim joints had rotted out which caused the deck to tear away from the house. paramedics took all five people injured to the hospital but looks like they are going to be okay. now you can learn about the changes that may come to route 28, the corridor there in northern virginia. there have been complaints about 28 south offism-66. vdot's going to share what it learned from a new traffic study in order to make short-term fixes. and tonight's meeting is at 6:30 at the manassas park community center on adams street in manassas park. d.c.'s own big dig has hit a snag. this piece of equipment is called the lady bird bore. it has been digging a tunnel under the anacostia river the past two years. d.c. water was supposed to unearth it today but now says they are not ready. the machine cared out four miles of tunnel underground as part of a water decontamination project. the workers will try to get it out again tomorrow. questions surround the release of this dash cam video showing the arrest of a woman

texas officials have uploaded new video of the traffic stop and the arrest of sandra bland after allegations of he had i do the the dash cam video. the texas department of public safety posted a 52-minute video of that dash cam video to a youtube channel yesterday and at several points, the video repeats itself or is cut while the audio continues, uninterrupted. this has raised several concerns and suspicions on social media. the department said there were no he had ditz and blamed a technical issue during the posting. bland's family just held a news conference.

extremist who acted alone. >> investigators released new information about what happened during those attacks, as nbc's chris clackum reports, we learned about some heroics that day. >> reporter: as the memorial to the chattanooga shooting victims grew even greater wednesday, the military and fbi now say it could have been worse, if not for the heroic efforts of a sailor and a few marines. >> i can tell that you our marines reacted the way you would expect. some willingly ran back into the fight. >> reporter: a fight that began when a heavily armed mohammad youssuf abdulazeez first crashed through the gates of the navy support center last thursday morning, the second military location he had targeted and was met with gunfire from a sailor trying to protect his post. >> a service member from inside the facility observed him and opened fire on him firing several rounds at him.

>> reporter: abdulazeez returned fire though. >> he made his way throughout the building, continuing to shoot at those who he encountered. >> reporter: he then exited the building into a fenced area yes shot and killed two more service members before firing on another crowd seeking safety. >> two service members attempted to provide cover and assist the military personnel getting over the fence and away from the shooter. the shooter continued to fire and killed two additional service members. >> reporter: moments later, chattanooga police shot and killed abdulazeez, whose reasons for doing all this remain a mystery, unlike the actions of the u.s. military. >> the heroic actions of these service members doubtlessly saved numerous lives. >> reporter: first funeral for his five victims is this friday. chris clackum, nbc news. bill cosby's lawyers are asking the court to sanction a woman who accused him of sexual assault. they claim that she broke a

technical, not intentional how officials in texas are explaining the irreg mares the a dash cam video that shows the traffic stop and the arrest of sandra bland. the woman was found hanged in her jail cell three days later. this newly released dash cam video appears to repeat itself at several points. we are going to hear how the department of public safety is explaining these glitches coming up in our next half hour. racial protests ripped this city apart and now one man will have a big hand in rebuilding the trust. today, andre anderson was introduced as the interim police chief in ferguson, missouri, take an six-month leave of absence from his post in glendale, arizona. fighting and protest broke out in ferguson last year after an unarmed black teenager was shot and killed. the scene as local college students woke up on campus to a

campus alert this morning. a police chase leading to gunfire and two arrests outside george washington university. police say the suspects abandoned a stolen car near h street and pennsylvania avenue northwest. news4's molette green tells us what happened after an officer fired his gun. >> reporter: just before 4 a.m. shots fired. >> incident fired shots off campus, searching on foggy bottom campus. >> reporter: that message sent out in the text blast, alerting students on george washington university's campus. >> i was asleep, check my phone then woke up at like 6, saw it again. >> reporter: and hours into the morning rush, this student passed by an it cantive crime scene here at 23rd and h on the way to class. at the center of it a redford with the car doors open. investigators dusted for finger prints and collected evidence at the scene where police say the suspects bailed out of the car. it's up clear exactly what

prompted the officer to fire his weapon but no one was struck. >> come on now. >> reporter: crime scene tape and an officer posted turned apedestrians and car traffic, an alarming start to the day for many in this part of town. >> pretty scared very, very scary. >> reporter: it's possible there is a second car involved in this stolen car investigation a gray ford focus that was towed away from virginia avenue not far away to this location. d.c. police not confirming whether there is an actual connection. in northwest, molette green, news4. the incident in foggy bottom just one of several shots fired across the district overnight. someone shot a man on second street in southeast, near the river hill apartments. he was able to call for help but he should survive his injuries. no arrests there. also, five other men shot in separate incidents across the district. these shootings took place between 9:00 last night and 2 this morning.

all of those victims survived. one however is in critical condition. in today's talk around up to, getting new reaction to a study that found more kids live in poverty now than during the great depression. whur's troy johnson is here. what do these numbers tell us? >> the numbers are really stark, sobering numbers, 22% of children are living in poverty at this time, right now. you go back to 2008, as you said, with the recession, we are talking about at that point it was just 18%. and here in our area here in the district, 35,000 children living in poverty here in washington, d.c. that's 27% of all the kids in the district. these are numbers coming out from the annie e. casey foundation and telling a very sobering story of what children are having to deal. it doesn't seem like the recovery has come to the children. everybody else but them. >> 35,000 in d.c. >> 35,000

>> 16 million nationwide. why? >> quite a few reasons. first of all, you have problems with the parents parents are not being able to get the type of jobs that they need to really sustain families. we are talking about people even working full time, but still making salaries if you want to call them that, that are well below the poverty line working full-time hours but there's no secure employment for some of these parents. >> talk to somebody about that. >> we did talk to somebody about that last night, as a matter of fact, on the daily drum. we had a conversation with someone who says if we are going to attack this situation we are going to have to do it in a multipronged aspect. >> i think what happens when we talk about social services, it's either/or, children or families, but this approach has to be comprehensive. we know that when we don't support the child, parents suffer and vice versa. and so when we say, you know, the financial security, child

show and trevor noah takes over the end of september. those invasive snake head fish are not only thriving in our local waters they are branching out. maryland wildlife officials are asking people to help catch them before they do more damage. snake heads were first discovered in the potomac river 13 years ago. experts say that now they have been spotted in the c & o canal and other smaller waterways in maryland and virginia. there are concerns because the snake head preys on our native fish. it is a higher predator and that damages our local ecosystem. danger in the bedroom. safety officials have a warning after a series of deadly incidents involving dressers.

one of the nation's most popular furniture stores, ikea, has started a nationwide safety program. >> two kids have already died and consumer reporter erika gonzalez has been looking into this from the newsroom. erika? >> reporter: hi chris this is something we warn you had about furniture, tv tipovers many times before. ikea is encouraging customers to anchor its furniture to the wall to prevent from -- to prevent it from falling on children. the nationwide safety push comes after two children died last year. this is 2-year-old kern of westchester, pennsylvania. he died when an ikea six-drawer chest tipped over on top of him.

murder/suicide that happened overnight in suburban atlanta. police say a man shot his wife and two stepsons last night before he killed himself. the boys were only 8 and 9 years old. this happened just after deputies made a visit to their house on a domestic violence call but they had to leave because no one at the house was cooperating. the children's grandfather was also shot. right now, he is in critical condition. firefighters in montana are trying to stop a fast-moving wildfire, burned through nearly 1,000 acres in a national park much the fire didn't seem all that big at first but within a few hours, the flames were overwhelming. misshut down highways in parts of the state to protect residents. and take a look at our beautiful planet. nasa giving us a stunning look at ourselves from outer space a 4 megapixel camera with a telescope snapped this photo from more than a million miles away. that is north and south america under those clouds. this is the first full picture of earth that has been taken since 1972.

stabbed a woman on a bike. she told officers she was riding through southeast d.c. when a man attacked her with a knife. this is right around 17th and barney circle near congressional cemetery. now, the victim managed to ride a short distance away and then call 911. our pat comes talked to the woman. we are going to hear from her in the next ten minutes. she says she got on because, she says she didn't pay the full fare and that's when she says things turned interesting. it happened here at the anacostia metro station. an 18-year-old who is in town for the summer claiming that metro transit police officers took her off a bus and roughed her up. we talked to her today. going to get her take on the situation. also going to hear metro's side of things and you decide who was in the right and who was in the wrong. that story coming up. and a texas woman dies in her jail cell days after this arrest recorded on a dash camera. and now, there are allegations that this video was edited. how public safety officials in texas are responding.

a woman is behind bars after the she literally drove herself to the local sheriff's office in a stolen car. authority says she drove to the

county jail tuesday morning in a car that had been reported stolen from a rental car company in california. deputies say she went to the jail to visit her boyfriend, who was already locked up. along with the car, police found dozens of stolen credit cards and some illegal drugs inside the vehicle. this massive warehouse fire is so big, first responders expect to be fighting it well into tomorrow. there's also a concern about some toxic smoke from the burning plastics inside the building in new jersey. police officer on the scene says it's so big, this building would cover about 50 football fields, so they have had to evacuate about six nearby apartment buildings as well. a wild, bloody battle plays out inside a texas gas station. that's store clerk engaging in a white-knuckle us it well a robber. they are wrestling for a gun. as they do so two other thieves are ransacking the store. police say one robber was shot in the shoulder during the struggle and he collapsed during the get away and got arrested.
