death penalty in this case. just in, a space shuttle carrying an astronaut with ties to our area has landed safely at the international space station. the liftoff we have video of the liftoff which happened on wednesday in russia. the american astronaut is on board. he is on board with a japanese astronaut and a russian cosmonaut. they are going to join two russians and another american astronaut there at the international space station to do experiments on how the human body reacts in space. so good job to chael lend again. >> thanks. and last month, the federal transit administration issued a scathing report of metro. 90 safety issues. 77 of those on the rail side, 13 on the bus side. today metro will provide an update on how they're improving safety for employees and for

riders. we are waiting for metro transit police to release video of a man that they are looking for. officers say he's the reason why some of you were stranded on metro tuesday evening. he's wanted for pulling an emergency switch on a green line train that was leaving l'enfant plaza. he missed his train so he pulled it. it led to some delays i'm sure you know that. new information on why a deck collapsed in howard county. montgomery drive has some lanes closed here as pepco tries to clear this pole that was knocked over from an earlier. prince george's county nice and green. b.w. parkway 95, 29, everything rolling along quite well. no major issues. right now, we'll see you back here at 4:41. right now at the live desk we are following a significant wildfire that's really burning out west. and guess what? it's in wine country. it's a wildfire that is in napa and solana counties. it is just raging. it is only 5% contained at this point. so firefighters certainly have a long way to go. it's burnt 4,000 acres so far. this is a fast moving fire we're told as many of the wildfires are. the terrain out there if you can imagine is very rugged. it is also very steep so it's

making it difficult for firefighters. about 400 of them are out there trying to get this thing under control. aaron? >> kristin, thank you. texas governor abbott says sandra bland's family deserves answers. video of how she was treated sparked an outcry which was made worse when she was found hanging in her jail cell. they want to make sure that justice is served here. bland told police she had tried to kill herself in the past after losing a baby. and bland's family rejects the allegations that she suffers from mental health issues. people are wondering what their rights are if they're pulled over. no one wants to see a situation escalate, but no one wants their rights violated either. we spoke to the local chapter and the director wouldn't speak to the bland case but cooperation is key to making sure that any situation doesn't

escalate. >> even if the officer is wrong in stopping you it's not to your advantage to get into the argument, to get into a fight, to run away, to drive away. cooperate with the officer and you know, if you've got a con -- to contest the ticket later you can do that. >> now, the aclu recommends turning on your enterior lights rolling down your windows halfway and putting both hands on the steering wheel to allow the officer to do his or her job well. today, a number of activists are headed to annapolis to talk about police reform. aclu and naacp and amnesty international are staging a rally this afternoon. if you're in annapolis, you will see them on lawyer's mall. they want lawmakers to take action to increase community the policing and limit police abuse. in baltimore a former cop wants to perform in black face to raise money for the officers charged in freddie gray's death.

however, the venue where he was planning to perform just cancelled the show. that's a wave of backlash according to "the baltimore sun." not only do the police union and the naacp both object, but a lawyer for the officer says they wouldn't accept any money from the show. a man will spend more time behind bars after a spree of bold burglaries in maryland and virginia. bean didn't both to use doors or windows to break in. he'd enter the utility closets, cut a hole in the dry wall and then crawl into an apartment. it seems the burglaries -- a thirsty business after drinking a root beer in one house and he left behind his dna. >> we count on criminals to make a false move, make a mistake and they will be caught eventually. and that led to his downfall. >> now, bean will now face another ten years in prison. he's currently serving time in virginia for similar crimes.

take a minute to look at this video. the fbi wants to know if you recognize this man. he robbed a bank during the lunch hour yesterday. this is the wells fargo bank on pennsylvania avenue southeast near branch avenue in the district. police say the man walked in around 1:00 and handed the teller a note saying he was armed and he wanted money. after getting the cash, he took off. you can get another look at the man police say is armed and dangerous on the nbc washington app. call police if you have information. on capitol hill, a hearing about the iran nuclear deal. secretary of state john kerry is testifying at 10:00. congress has to approve the agreement which rolls back sanctions on iran in exchange for limiting its nuclear program. president obama has said if lawmakers reject the deal he will veto their decision. the head of the fbi now says isis is a bigger threat to national security than al qaeda. director james comey made the

comments at the aspen forum in colorado. he said the use of social media by isis to radicalize americans here at home is a bigger threat than those plotted by al qaeda overseas. when asked if mohammad youssuf abdulazeez may have been inspired by isis, comey said we don't know yet. 4:38. today, donald trump heads to texas. trump is expected to meet with border control agents in laredo to talk about border security. trump has made immigration a recent part of the campaign speech. tracie potts will have a look at how others are now on the attack against trump. live look outside for you this morning where we are sitting at about 70 degrees here in the district.

here in the newsroom we are working on a developing story coming out of oklahoma this morning. two teenagers have been taken into custody. they are talking to police right now about five -- the discovery of five bodies in their home. five of their family members in fact. the five victims were found at a house last night along with a child who is now in critical condition. the teenagers who have been taken into custody are 16 and 18 years old. not a whole lot else to tell you at this point. still developing by the minute, but certainly a troubling situation for this family in oklahoma. so we'll watch it. >> thank you, kristin. 4:46. today, donald trump heads to texas and is expected to meet with border patrol agents to discuss immigration. we're here that the afl/cio union has cancelled a tour of a

section of the border. nbc's tracie potts has the latest on all this. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning. he was invited down by the local event union, but the national stepped in with some concerns about the appearance of endorsing donald trump and cancelled their portion of this event. trump's campaign tells us as of this morning he is still going to laredo. remember, it was his comments about rapists coming over therd boer that sparked a firestorm of criticism and now we're hearing some republican candidates fight back on some of the comments he's been making. rick perry called trump a barking carnival act saying that he's toxic to the republican party. lindsey graham whose cell phone was released by trump this week calls him a car wreck. we will see a lot more later today as trump according to his campaign heads down to that border in laredo. >> tracie potts on the hill, thank you. democrats are calling it the

donald trump bill. lawmakers are expected to vote today on a bill that will hold back federal law enforcement money from states or local governments that don't cooperate with federal immigration agents. democrats say it unfairly targets some immigrants. a man is behind bars this morning accused of shooting and killing a police officer in california. sergeant scott lunder was killed yesterday near san francisco. police say the officer pulled over the driver of a car after he was spotted swerving. the man thought to have ties with the gang in the area fired without warning and the officer shot back. the suspect is being treated after being shot but is expected to be okay. lunger has been on the job for 15 years. the gunman who confessed to shooting nine people in south carolina may face the death penalty. a grand jury indicted dylann roof on dozens of federal charges. those charges include 12 counts of committing a hate crime. a trial date has been set for

july 11th of 2016. 4:49. in "news4 your health" this morning a new study has an explanation for what seems to be a surge in autism cases here in the united states. researchers at penn state believe there isn't a big increase in cases. instead, they say doctors are now using autism to refer to more conditions than they used to. the researchers believe that's responsible for 97% of the increase in the disease. it looks like more d.c. students will be able to pay for college through a popular tuition assistance program. a senate subcommittee approved $30 million in funding for the d.c. tag program. it provides up to 10 grand a year to d.c. residents who attend college outside the city. since 2000, the program has helped more than 24,000 students pay for school. students in montgomery county schools are not making the grade in math. new data shows three out of four high school students flunked the june test in algebra one and

that's an improvement from last year. in all, 74% of high school students in montgomery failed june's algebra one, and 8% less than last year. some educators have linked the poor exam performance to a lack of preparation and the district's grading policies. a new response to that massive data breach in the federal government. virginia senator mark warner introduced a new bill to step up oversight of federal websites. the proposal gives the department of homeland security more resources to prevent and respond to a hack. warner wants more consistency and protection of the dot gov sites. well dulles airport is offering free rides to the airport. the airport celebrating one year of service for -- from metro silver line to the airport. so on sunday and monday, dulles is picking up the tab on all

temperatures in the 60s from the shenandoah valley all the way to the metro area and around the bay as well. we have temperatures in the upper 60s and near 70s. post your pictures like coop did via twitter. this is the scene near harrison burg, virginia, wine country yesterday afternoon. gorgeous there as well. hour by hour, for the rest of the day we'll be near 70 by 8:00. noontime, the mid 80s. during the afternoon upper 80s. again, just some high cloud and comfortable as the feels like temperature will just about match the actual air temperature. feels like temperatures on friday, saturday and sunday will begin to climb into the 90s as we'll get increasing humidity each day. but still beautiful on friday and most of saturday. we're getting more humid saturday afternoon with a high around 90. sunday is the next chance of any storms. maybe sunday afternoon and evening a small chance of an isolated thundershower. a greater chance monday and tuesday and wednesday next week,

heights. one of the guards died. police believe they were targeted. two parents in new mexico are facing charges for throwing a lit fire work at a homeless man. it's blurry but you can see the flashing light after the purple van drives by. albuquerque police say that's the fire work that the couple threw at the man. the couple regret what they did. >> i just hope he gets through this okay and our prayers are with him. >> was this a prank that went wrong? >> yes. >> you didn't mean to -- >> no. we did not. >> police also charged the parents with child abuse. they say the couple's 12-year-old, 10-year-old and 2-year-old were all in the car at the time. over a week left until the dead line for a new baseball stadium in spotsylvania county. however, they are still waiting to hear back from the owners of the hagerstown suns.

supervisors want to keep negotiating, however, the owner sent what he called his final offer to the county earlier this month. tom brokaw is getting behind an effort to build a memorial honoring president dwight eisenhower. the former "nbc nightly news" anchor is joining an advisory committee for the eisenhower memorial project along with former senator bob dole. brokaw says he learned while writing about world war ii that veterans very much want to see eisenhower honored. the project has been slowed though by design and funding problems. stay with us.
