i'm megan mcgrath live in harp percent ferry. if you look behind me you can see the damage caused by this early morning fire. this is the business district along high street. all four historic buildings were destroyed. >> actually, that's my shop. >> history up in flames in harpers ferry. cindy dunn's shop the vintage lady is no more. the building which dates back to 1840 is now a burned-out shell. >> what this has done not just to me personal le but to the fabric that is harpers ferry is devastating. >> reporter: flames raged through a section of the historic business district on high street this morning. four buildings, home to several businesses and apartments were destroyed. it is quite a blow to this tight-knit community.

>> when it actually phappens in a small down like this it is affected. now who the poor people are. you know everybody. >> reporter: while the loss of property is extensive, cindi dunn takes comfort in the fact that no one was hurt. >> people love this town. it is heartbreaking to think how it is going to change harpers ferry.r: firefighters are still here on the scene. they are putting out some of the hotspots making sure this fire doesn't flair up again. when they arrived early this morning, they say the bulk of the fire was in the area of some very long wooden stairs and then the flames spread from there. at this point they say it is just too early to say what caused this fire. in harpers ferry, megan mcgrath, news 4. right now charles severance is back in court, the man accused of killing three people

in alexandria over the course of ten years. the defense and prosecution going back and forth over various motions. the rules for what will happen at trial. most importantly, whether a photo lineup shown to a witness, a witness who was the caregiver of victim teacher ruth ann ladato's mother. whether that photo lineup shown to her. she could not positively identify severance when shown his pick krur inture in that photo lineup with five other men. the defense wants this in. the prosecution wants it out. jewelry carry julie carey is live. he had a bit of an outburst in court where he said, your honor where is the jury? she told him, there are no juries at hearings the father of a woman allegedly murdered by an undocumented immigrant who had a criminal record is speaking out. the murder sparked national outcry, because the man accused

had been released by police after drug charges. that's despite a request from federal immigration authorities to hold him. the house is set to vote today on whether to withhold funds from states and cities that do not cooperate with federal immigration agents. democrats are calling it the quote, donald trump bill. the presidential candidate quickly pointed to the murder as evidence that his focus on the threat posed by illegal immigration was on target. trumps comments about immigrants set off a firestorm. he is heading to the u.s./mexican border. he will land about 1:00 local time there. this comes on the focus of an interview with the hill where he said he might launch an independent bid for the white house if he doesn't like running as a republican. >> today the prisoner who escaped from federal custody at a northern virginia hospital is due in court. he is accused of getting away

deal with iran. you have heard a lot about this. agree to draw back the nuclear activity and cooperate with inspectors in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. oppositions mostly from republicans. kerry right now trying to convince lawmakers that the administration will take action if iran doesn't do what they say they are going to do. take a listen. iran has agreed to refrain from producing or acquiring highly enriched and plutonium for at least 15 years and if they begin to do that, we will know it. >> secretary kerry referring to the energy secretary. congress has two months to review this plan. they can reject it. then, president obama can veto their decision. >> all right thank you so much, kristen. metro transit police are searching for a rider that pulled an emergency switch on a train have the officers say he was the reason why a lot of you were stranded on metro tuesday

evening. the man apparently missed his stop. he pulled the lever on the train leaving the station. the incident led to some serious serious backups on metro during rush-hour on tuesday. metro safety culture was the big topic at this morning's boardransit administration officials presented today and said, metro is not following its own safety program. the group that's supposed to oversee metro safety isn't doing a good enough job. fda officials noted employees are not getting adequate training. there is a lot coming out of this meeting including what we learned about your chance of getting through to 911 in case of an emergency. you can find much more about this story on the nbc washington app. your storm team 4 forecast. >> low humidity levels solo it will feel a touch cooler than the thermometer is actually reading this afternoon. as we work our way toward friday, saturday and sunday humidity will slowly make its way back into the area.

competition rules. students and math are not adding up in montgomery county. new data showed 3 out of 4 high schoolers flunked algebra 1 test. in all, 74% of high school students in the county failed june's algebra 1 semester and final. some educators have linked the poor exam performance to a lack of preparation and the district's grading policies we are not sure if you are ever going to hear another story like this one again. this is about a burglary. police in northern new jersey arrested this man. they charged him with breaking into somebody's home. that's not the good part. they say after he made it inside, the man spent three days hiding under a bed. the bed was in a spare bedroom. the homeowner eventually finds him there. police say that the man even was able to charge his phone several times while hiding under the bed. they charged the man with burglary, theft of services criminal trespassing. where do they come up with this stuff?

>> got to check that spare bedroom, i guess. >> new twist in the case of a woman who died in police custody in texas. authorities now saying they found marijuana in sandra bland's system. we are hearing a voice mail she left from jail and each new detail seems to race more questions than answers. nbc's john yang has the latest from texas. >> late wednesday night authorities asked sandra bland's family to preserve her body for more testing. >> there have been reports in the media that marijuana was found in miss bland's system. i can confirm that. asry out of new information we discovered today, the district attorney, mr. mathis asked the civil attorney to please preserve the body. >> the prosecutor also said there is evidence she tried to cut herself one to two weeks prior to her death. on her first night in jail, bland left a voice mail message

struggling to understand what was happening to her. >> i'm still just at a loss for words honestly about this whole process, how switching lanes with no signal turned into all this. >> the voice mail was gotten from ktrk. earlier that day, she told jail officials she tried to kill herself in 2014 after losing a baby but said she was not suicidal on that day. her family's attorney says they were unaware of the past attempt and that in any event, it doesn't matter. >> she had just gotten two texts the day before and she was about to start a job. >> others were wondering how this traffic stop went so bad so fast. >> get out of the car now. >> texas state trooper brian ensino said bland kicked him in the leg during the incident which lasted about 15 minutes. >> why am i being apprehended? >> once the fuse is lit, it is

11:30 last night following a 911 call when someone dialed for help but didn't speak. >> take a look at this fire. we showed it to you as breaking news yesterday. believe it or not, it is still burning. the fire smoldering at a warehouse in northern new jersey totally gutted the warehouse. today investigators are working to find out what started the blaze. one firefighters was hurt. we are told he is expected to be okay. >> is that ir a lion roaming the streets of milwaukee? it is the question city officials are trying to get to the bottom of. walk wag police following up on cell phone videos showing an animal that appears to be lion ish. officers checked the neighborhood. they didn't find anything. even though there is no evidence of one, police are taking the report seriously. the milwaukee zoo says it is not one of their lions. all their animals are accounted for. >> if you love ellen you are going to want to hear this. we are offering fans the chance

morning fire did quite a bit of damage in the business district along high street. if you take a look behind me, look in between these two buildings, you can see that charred line there. there used to be a long wooden staircase there. firefighter it is say when they arrived, the bulk of the fire was concentrated in that area. the flames then spread from there. a total of four historic buildings were gutted in this fire. there were several businesses inside those buildings as well as a couple of apartments. everybody was able to get out okay. no injuries in this fire. a tremendous amount of property damage. those businesses are not going to be able to salvage anything. more than that property loss is the loss of the history here. these are historic buildings that date back to the civil war. >> this is not disneyland. my two buildings are 1840. all of these buildings are preserved buildings from the civil war era. they are ir replaceable.

>> reporter: firefighters are still here on the scene keeping an eye on high spots and flare-ups occurring throughout the morning. as for the cause of this fire, they say it is just too early to figure out exactly what caused it. they are going to be here the bulk of the day. we have road closures. the mark twain station still closed. megan mcgrath, back in harper's ferry. the smithsonian continues to stand behind the exhibition. dozens of e-mails are calling for that collection of african art to be removed. others are threatening to boycott by canceling memberships. the protests come in a wake of a deposition that reveals that cosby admitted that he obtained drugs and gave them to women when he wanted to have sex with them. plenty of your neighbors are taking action after what appears to be a bear attack. blue, the 6-year-old labrador is recovering after a possible bear

attack earlier this week. it happened tuesday night in great falls. neighbors are taking action by putting up cameras in the area to monitor any type of suspicious activity. right now, crews are pulling parts of a massive machine out of the grown. the machine was digging tunnels for two years. mark segraves is live. >> reporter: that's right. they call her lady bird. for the past few years, she has been crawling underneath the city from underneath the an ta kosta river coming above ground today part of a $2 billion river restoration project. here is what it looked like when it came out of the ground earlier today. this weighs 200,000 pounds. this is just front portion, the drill bit of a football length field drill that has been

thank you. directing right now, the director of the fbi says he considers isis a bigger threat than al qaeda to the united states. kr is kristen welker tells us why that is and what makes the group such a threat. >> isil is not your parents al qaeda. it is very different. it is the current threat we are worrying about in the homeland. >> reporter: that's fbi director, james comey, telling an audience that isis has officially become a bigger threat to the united states than al qaeda. their radicalization efforts have been specially effective reaching thousands of americans through social media. urging followers that can't travel to kill where you are. >> they have adopted a model to crowd source terrorism. >> he added that they have arrested a significant number of radicalized americans over the last few weeks. he did not say how many.
