lawrence. he is at the live desk with new details. >> police just wrapped up a news conference in the last one to two minutes. we now confirm a man shot ten people in that theater and then killed himself. at least one of the victims is dead, and three others are in critical condition. take a look. here is what has been happening at the grand theater. witnesses say they were at the 7:00 show eing of "train wreck." about 20 minutes into the movie someone stood up and started shooting. some of the witnesses say this was at the back, that he stood up and started shooting down. now police are telling us they do know who the shooter is but all they're saying is he is a 58-year-old man, a white man. but they're not giving out his identity. although, again, they do know who he is. right now the fbi and atf are on the scene. they are been sweeping the building and the parking lot for explosives. right now there is no evidence of that. but remember, in the colorado movie shooting, james holmes had rigged his apartment with a trip wire and bombs. again no evidence of that here

yet there are about 100 people inside that theater. investigators are interviewing as many of them as possible. and we have learned that governor bobby jindal just got there to the scene. wrap up, nine people rushed to hospital. some of them have minor injuries. some of them very serious. three of them are in critical condition. we also learned that four officers did enter the building, and they heard the shots that were fired. and after this happened, police sent officers out to other movie theaters around the city of laugh lafayette. but simply as a precaution that point they do not think there is any danger. >> the shooting comes just after three years after the massacre in aurora that chris just referred to where 12 people were killed in a movie theater there. james holmes is the convicted killer in that case. the sentencing phase of his trial is still going on. today a jury decided that it would not rule out the death penalty. more witnesses will be

testifying before this jury makes a final decision on that sentencing. back here at home tonight, allegations of child abuse at a pricey day-care center in the district. >> and the victims are just babies, both under a year of age. the woman accused of hurting them is now fired and she is facing charges. >> news4's jackie bensen joyce us with reaction from the kiddie academy. that's in foggy bottom. she has more with the suspect being caught. >> reporter: jim, this facility is very highly thought of by the parents who bring their children here. a sophisticated video system aided in the arrest. the allegations outlined in the court documents are ugly. a 35-year-old child care provider, claudia roldan has been accused of abusing two kids in her care located in an office building on 25th street northwest. according to charging documents, one of the children was just three months old.

in may, a doctor who examined that child found 12 separate bruises on the infant's back, left arm, and both thighs that appear to have been caused by blunt force or compressive force. a police investigation began. detectives examined video camera footage and spoke to a witness who said she had seen roldan pinch other infants. we spoke to parents. none wanted to appear on camera who say they were drawn to the facility because of its security measures, including video cameras, and daily e-mail reports. >> i just think it's the most important thing in the world for your kids to be safe. i mean, who knows how many sleepless nights you spend worrying about that. >> we get a daily report of what happens in the school and we get pictures throughout the day of what the kids are doing. it's unsettling when you're not able to be there. >> reporter: in a statement the owner melina mattingly said earlier in the summer a teacher breached our conduct policy, resulting in her termination. we have been working closely with authorities that are

conducting the investigation. the education, well-being and the safety of the children in our care continues to be our priority and of the utmost importance to the staff and the owners. >> roldan was released on her own personal recognizance. she is charged with two on counts second-degree child abuse. back to you. >> jackie, thank you. new tonight, maryland state leaders are knocking millions off the cost of the purple line from montgomery county. in a letter obtained by news4, maryland's transportation secretary tells a county executive ike leggett the county only has to kick in $40 million instead of 50. leggett has agreed to that and will take the proposal to the county council prince georges is still in talks over its contribution to the project. you recall the cost for both counties went up last month when gary logan scaled back funding for purple line. this is video you have likely seen by now. but this is not something you want to do on the subway.

not if you want to keep your friends. it shows a train coming to an abrupt stop just as it's leaving the l'enfant station on tuesday. it turns out a rider pulled the emergency stop switch because he had missed his stop. and about 30 seconds later, that rider, there he is, pulls open the door. he and the child make a run for it down the platform. this stop, this emergency stop made a mess of the evening rush. metro did catch up with that guy but he is not being charged because metro says what he did is not criminal. wow. what a great stretch of weather throughout tonight. it's about to change, though, as we head into your weekend. doug is here to tell us when the humidity makes a comeback. how about it, doug? >> it's all about the humidity. temperatures today up around a 88 degrees. take a look at the high temperatures we saw around the area. 88 in d.c. that's right around the average for this time of year. 85 baltimore. 85 in warrenton and 86 in fredericksburg. in the sunshine, it was on the hot side. but the humidity was really not a factor. it's all because of an area of

high pressure that area of high pressure just off to the north and west. the nice weather has been around our region up towards parts of new england. the humid weather just down to the south. over the next few days, an area of high pressure shifts off and here comes the humidity right back up on sunday and into all of next week. wait until you see this forecast, guys. get ready for it. and think cool. that's all i can say right now. >> doug thank you. tonight the mother and fiancee of a security guard killed in maryland are pleading for his killer to come forward. someone shot and killed 26-year-old adrian canard last week at his apartment complex where he worked in capital heights. his family and friends held a vigil there for him to >> i love him so much. >> i know. >> he didn't deserve this. >> reporter: virginia arusa is heartbroken that her fiance adrian canard's candlelight vigil. the beloved security was shot

and killed in prince george's county. >> it's very upsetting. adrian did not deserve. this he was such a lovable person. >> reporter: tonight around 50 relatives and friends honor him near the crime scene at the central garden apartment complex on cindy lane and capitol heights. police say adrian and another security guard were filling out paperwork in their personal cars when someone walked up and opened fire around one income the morning. >> senseless tragedy. >> reporter: cynthia canard never thought she would outlive her son. he was 26 years old. >> he didn't bother anybody. he was doing his job. keeping people safe. >> reporter: the other guard survived the shooting. investigators believe the shooter targeted them. police told us they recovered the car the suspect drove during the shooting. while they continue the investigation, adrian's mother and sister are confident police will catch the killer. >> they need to turn themselves in. because eventually you -- you're going to be caught. >> reporter: you can see more of this makeshift memorial of

candles, teddy bears and cards, people paying tribute to adrian. prince george's county police urge you to give them a call if you have any information about what happened out here. and it's worth mentioning that adrian leaves behind a 1-year-old daughter. in prince george's county, i'm shomari stone, news4. new at 11:00, d.c. police looking for a gunman in a shooting that happened near an elementary school. someone shot a man on darrington street in southwest that is near patterson elementary. it was just after 5:00 this evening. the victim was not conscious and not breathing when officers got there. we do not know that victim's condition. a woman found hanging in her jail cell appears to have committed suicide. that's according to medical examiners in texas. they say there is no evidence that sandra bland was murdered. in an autopsy report today examiners also said a large amount of marijuana was found in bland's system. it's unclear when she smoked or ingested it. and about 30 cuts were found on

her left wrist. examiners say they were likely self-inflicted several weeks before her arrest. police brutality was front and center in annapolis today as activists appealed to lawmakers for police reform. the demonstrators rallied while a panel discussed ways to increase police accountability. that panel heard from people impacted by police brutality. hopes to have several bills ready by next year's legislative session. but outside, activists voiced their frustration and their growing impatience. >> if white women were being lynched in their jail cells and white boys were getting their spines snapped you would declare a national emergency. you would declare a state of emergency, and you would get something done. >> some reform was passed during the last legislative session but demonstrators say it did not go far enough. fairfax county police tweeting out a thank you tonight to those of you who helped them catch the teenagers who

investigators say were torching several cars. four boys are now facing charges after people in the little rocky run neighborhood woke up to this on saturday morning. police say the boys set fire to nearly a dozen vehicles in recent weeks in the community that borders clinton and centerville. the suspects all live in that area, and they are all in jail tonight. new at 11:00 tonight president obama on his way to africa right now for a historic trip. the president boarded air force one earlier this evening. the president is visiting his father's home country of kenya, as well as ethiopia. he'll become the first sitting u.s. president to do so. activists say the two countries have a lousy human rights record and want the president to criticize those abuses on this trip. a life-saving moment caught on video tonight. next at 11:00 we're going to hear from one of the people who lifted a car off of a woman and ended up saving her life. and have you seen one? more black bear sightings in

virginia county. fairfax taking steps to better keep track of these bears. here at the live desk we're updating the breaking news that we told you about at the top of the show. we have now learned that another victim has died in that movie shooting in lafayette, louisiana. let's take you out now. these are live pictures of the scene outside that movie theater. video from that scene. again, a second victim has died. seven other people are hurt. their injuries range from minor to extremely serious and even critical. governor bobby jindal is there on the scene right now. he summed it up tonight when he says this is an awful night for lafayette, an awful night for louisiana. this is an awful night for the united states. we'll be right back.

we have new pictures tonight of some bear sightings in northern virginia today. animal services installed cameras in wooded areas near river bend park in great falls. just yesterday we told you about a dog in great falls that survived what looks like a bear attack. and there has been more than a dozen bear sights reported. police are not sure if it's the same bear or if in fact it is a bear that attacked this dog. >> some incredible new video tonight out of dallas. an amazing group effort to save a woman's life. several police officers, firefighters bystanders lifting a car to free the woman trapped underneath it. just moments before the car hit the woman as she was riding her motorcycle, the car then dragged and ran over her before stopping. police officers say when they

arrived, they knew they needed to work quickly. >> all we saw was like an arm and the rest of her. so we tried to make sure that she was still alive, still breathing, something. once we saw the big guys show up, we were like i think there is enough of us to lift up the car. so we made the decision lift up the car instead of waiting. >> the bikers is still in the hospital, but didn't suffer any life threatening injuries. in an unprecedented decision today, prosecutors want a former executive to spend the rest of his life in prison for a deadly salmonella outbreak in peanut butter. stuart parnell was convicted for the cases in 2008 and 2009. salmonella cases at the cdc linked to nine deaths and more than 700 illnesses. prosecutors say that parnell's company falsified the test results to cover up the peanut butter that was tainted with this bacteria. parnell's attorney called the

life sentence recommendation absurd. a new visitor center in the flight 93 national memorial in shanksville, pennsylvania will open september 10. it features an education center and a walkway tracing the flight's path on september 11th 2001. the tickets are free but timed because the park service expects very large crowds. for ticket information, search flight 93 memorial on our nbc washington app. dangerous wildfires are raging out west. part of wine country in california was scorched. what started as a brushfire on tuesday, exploded fast. 200 homes are under threat and two neighborhoods had to be evacuated. 1300 firefighters are attacking these flames from the ground and from the air. this fire burning at glacier national park in montana forced more than 600 campers to flee. so far the west has seen almost 1200 more wildfires this year

shooting. what are you hearing now chris? >> yeah, jim, we've been following this story throughout the newscast. now we're hearing that the coroner is inside that theater right now with investigators. and that at least two of the bodies are still in there as they try to piece this together. again this happened some time around 8:30 our time. their time it was the 7:00 showing of train wreck. about 100 people in that movie theater when someone stood up in the back and started shooting down. we have heard from at least one police source that a handgun was used. they have recovered that handgun. and they also know who this shooter is. they're not releasing his identity other than to say he is a 58-year-old man. they're talking to all of those witnesses again. two people were pronounced dead when police got there to the scene. one victim and the shooter, and then a second victim died about 20 to 30 minutes ago. at least seven or eight other
