way to kenya and ethiopia. the president voiced strong support for gay rights in africa. in an interview with the bbc he said he had been quote blunt with african leaders about gay rights. latdzer this -- later this hour tracie potts will talk about the security concerns surrounding this trip. new this morning, maryland state leaders are knocking millions off the cost of the purple line for montgomery county. in a letter obtained by news4, maryland's transportation secretary tells ike leggett the county will have to kick in an extra $40 million. instead of the $50 million the state initially requested. leggett has agreed to the $40 million. now the county council will look at the plan. the cost for both counties went up last month when governor logan scaled back state funding. 4:30. thank you for joining us on "news4 today" on this friday. looking forward to a nice weekend, hopefully, tom, maybe?

colesville is blocked. it doesn't seem like it's slowing things down too much. southeast/southwest freeway at maine avenue you have to stay right to get past the crash. maybe over to the shoulder at this point this morning. 66 east of 123, no problems inbound or outbound. looking at 95 northbound, you're fine. southbound through quantico a little slow because of late-clearing construction work as well. more on that coming up. this morning we are working to learn whether a man died after a shooting in the district. this happened near patterson elementary school on darrington street last night. d.c. police say the man was not conscious when the paramedics arrived. no information on a possible gunman. 4:32. the family of this man wants your help catching his killer. adrian kinard is a father and someone shot him last week. kinard and another guard were filling out paperwork when someone walked out and started

shooting. family and friends held a vigil asking for anyone that has information to come forward. >> it's just very upsetting. adrian did not deserve this. he was such a lovable person. >> the other security guard survived the shooting. police say they recovered the car the suspect drove that night. police believe the two security guards were targeted. the trial today for the woman and lover who helped her murder her husband. larlane brown and the man are charged with first degree murder and conspiracy to commit first degree murder. cecil brown was found beaten to death in his backyard. court documents show brown searched terms like poisons you can make at home before the murder. we expect emotional testimony this morning at the sentencing for the maryland man who killed his girlfriend's 2-year-old son. clifton bernard of suitland pleaded guilty in december to the 2013 murder.

prosecutors say he became angry with the baby and rammed the boy's head through drywall. the relatives are expected to testify today. bernard is facing up to 70 years in prison. today family and friends will gather to remember two of the marines killed in a shooting last week in tennessee. a funeral will be held today for staff sergeant david wyatt and a memorial service will be held for lance corporate squire skip wells. four marines and a sailor were shot and killed in attacks on two military facilities. new calls to change the names of three virginia schools named for confederate leaders. the fairfax times reports many were pressing for the name changes. it started after a racially charged hate killing last month in south carolina. they have singled out robert e. lee high school.

a man was arrested who dragged an officer with his car. danny harvell turned himself in yesterday. police say he sped off while an officer tried to question him. last week in district heights. the officer became caught in the car's door and he was dragged about 100 yards before the driver hit a tree and then ran away. harvell faces attempted second degree murder and some other charges. the officer wound up breaking his leg but we're told is going to make a full recovery. fairfax county police have caught four teens responsible for car fires. since the beginning of the month, the teens caused more than $120,000 in damage setting fires. all the car fires were in communities bordering clinton and centreville. the suspects are from the area. that according to police. and they're now in the fairfax county juvenile detention center. 4:35 now. russian national who once served

in the soviet union army heads to trial in richmond. the 55-year-old is accused of trying to kill americans and ewing a weapon of -- and using a weapon of mass destruction. he started fighting for a group affiliated with the taliban. he is accused of leading a raid on afghan police and soldiers. new details expected from nasa's new horizon team on the pluto mission. the team will hold a press conference this afternoon to release new images. they will also discuss the latest results from the spacecraft's flight through pluto earlier this month. the pictures are the result of a nine-year and 3 billion mile journey by nasa's new horizons spacecraft. a live look outside on this friday morning as we get ready for the weekend and the return of the humidity. but what will it be like on your ride in to work today? tom has your drive time forecast at 4:41. caught on camera, a car crash pinning a woman beneath it.

take a look at this video out of dallas. that is police officers, firefighters and bystanders lifting a car trying to free a woman who's trapped underneath. police say the car hit the woman while she was riding her motorcycle. the car ran her over and

actually dragged her for a few feet before it stopped. the biker is still in the hospital, but we understand she will be okay. it's a bird, it's a plane, no it's another black bear in northern virginia. new cameras were installed in great falls, so we told you about this story yesterday about this dog in that area that survived what looks like a bear attack earlier this week. well, there have been more than a dozen bear sightings reported. police are not sure if it's the same bear or if this is the animal that attacked that dog that you see there. >> yikes. don't go into the woods. >> no. definitely not. >> one of the lessons today. but you can go outside otherwise. if you can find some other recreationing -- i believe that's a word. i'm making up a word. tom kierein has a look at the forecast. >> save him. >> let's go in the car and go recreationing. hey, great morning for your run or walking the door. there's the washington monument. look at how clear the air is.

in late july we usually have the thick haze and humidity in the air. absolutely beautiful. the jefferson memorial at the tidal basin. live view from the tower camera and driving in, dry pavement. bright sunshine. need the visor down. it will be around 70. then by the afternoon, it will jump to near 90. but it will be a dry heat, not very humid. a few clouds popping up. a look at hotter weather and more humid weather for the weekend. that's coming up next weather and traffic on the 1s at 4:51. melissa has an update on that crash. >> update on this crash. initially, d.c. police were telling us eastbound we had somebody drive by it. it looks like it's westbound southeast/southwest freeway at maine. it seems like it will clear up in a bit. right now they're asking you to stay right to get past that crash because it's in the left lanes at this point this morning. outer loop at st. barnabas we have road work sticking around.

the 58-year-old gunman has been identified but his name has not been released. he started shooting after 20 minutes into the movie "trainwreck." nine people were hurt there. their injuries range from critical to minor. louisiana governor bobby jindal is praising the quick actions of those inside the theater. we'll have more from jindal and the quick response coming up in 15 minutes. now, just hours before that shooting in louisiana president obama told the bbc gun control was the issue that has left him quote the most stymied. the president said he's frustrated that the u.s. does not have what he called common sense laws for gun safety. he said that fewer than 100 americans have been killed since 9/11, but tens of thousands have been killed by gun violence. president obama son his way to kenya for a summit and meeting with the kenyan president. the president's father was from kenya. so people there very excited about his visit but security is tight.

nbc's tracie potts is with us now. tracie, what is it that we're expecting today from that area? >> reporter: well, not a lot today. the president going to land in the afternoon our time. it will be late there and then nothing else happens today. most of his events will start tomorrow. in kenya, he has a business round table. he'll meet with the president there and then he'll head to ethiopia for a meeting with the prime minister and the african union. they have a lot of issues to discuss. this will be the first visit by a sitting president to both of those nations. and it comes amid criticism of democracy and human rights failures in both of those countries. somali refugees mistreated according to some human rights groups. they're also taking a look at the indictment of the deputy president in kenya for violence surrounding their 2007 election. how journalists are treated so the president is walking into two countries that want to have

stronger economic ties with the united states. but have some human rights issues and the white house says he'll definitely deal with that. and urge them to have free elections fair elections in order to strengthen those economic ties with the u.s. and with the west. >> tracie potts, thank you very much. good to see you. 4:47. a new visitor center complex at the flight 93 national memorial in shanksville, pennsylvania, will open on september 10th. it features an education center and a walkway tracing the flight's path on september 11, 2001. the tickets are free but because the park service expects heavy crowds, that's the reason there. search for more on the nbc washington app. we are waiting for the results on a full autopsy of a woman found dead in a texas jail cell but preliminary findings show that sandra bland did take her own life. marks around her neck are consistent with suicide by hanging. officials also say she didn't have the defensive injuries. prosecutors -- prosecutors

added, there were 30 cuts on bland's wrists that were proerp proerp -- probably self-inflicted. bland's family maintains she would not have hanged herself. bland's arrest and death are under investigation. her funeral being held tomorrow in chicago. new developments in the mysterious death of a georgia teen found inside rolled -- inside a rolled up gym mat. yesterday, attorneys seized cell phones and computer froms two of johnson's former class mates. johnson was concluded to have died in a freak accident, but the teen's parents insist someone killed their son. police want you to be vij lament into who you're letting into and out of your office buildings. this man is a serial burglar. he targets offices in arlington right after opening or just before closing. he slips inside, picks up several laptops and walks right

out the door. >> a little bit brazen. you know, he's traveling in daylight hours and obviously not afraid of being seen. >> now, police say the suspect wears a cap and carries a backpack. as you can see here. he keeps a towel wrapped around his hand. and a public meeting has been to called to answer your questions. there will be one regional health center. it will be august 5th at 11:30 at george mason university in manassas. federal prosecutors want a former peanut company executive to receive a life sentence. stewart parnell is convicted for his company's deadly salmonella outbreak in 2008 and 2009. prosecutors said the company falsified test results to cover up peanut butter tainted with salmonella. the cdc said the outbreak was

responsible for nine deaths in four states including virginia. parnell's attorney called the life sentence recommendationa federal judge will hand down a sentence in september. we're learning about a court ruling that will impact all you butt dialers out there. when you sit on your phone and accidentally call somebody, you can't expect privacy. someone butt dialed a woman, she recorded the caller talking about how her boss was about to be fired. the world cup soccer star who drew up in our area is returning as a champion. u.s. women national team star defender ali krieger is back on the practice field in germantown playing for the washington spirit. coming off that victory tour, she set to get back into business, but she refuses to take any time off, because it's good for the game. >> right now my focus is here. obviously i want to be with this

you're watching "news4 today." >> we are hearing emotional testimony from the survivors of the shooting that killed ruthanne lodato. charles severance was testified against and she testified she was taking care of her mother last year when she heard the doorbell. a loud noise sent her running for the door. lodato was killed. >> she witnessed a murder, she was shot. she led a 90-year-old woman to safety. had 911 called. and then she put her own life at risk and returned to ruthanne.

>> a judge called a recess at the end of franco's tearful testimony and franco ran out of the courtroom. ashl -- severance is charged with killing three people. "news4 your health," working up a good sweat may offer some help, once your memory starts to slide. a series of studies found vigorous workouts by people with mild memory loss decreased levels of a protein linked to risk of alzheimer's. the study found exercise can also improve life for people with alzheimer's. in studies from north carolina denmark and canada people got 45 minutes to an hour of aerobic exercise three or four times a week. three women are suing their apartment complex in hyattsville over a bedbug problem. tanya stokes and her 87-year-old more ethel live at the apartments in hyattsville and they said it was infested with the little guys but the property owners didn't fix the problem.
