"news4 today" continues right now at 5:00 a.m. >> "news4 today" starts now. >> that's the big question. that's the -- that's what everybody is wondering why, why would this guy come here to this theater and just start randomly shooting people? >> that is lafayette, louisiana, police chief jim kraft, speaking overnight about the deadly shooting inside a movie theater asking the questions people around the country asking this morning. why? here is what we know. right now police are checking out suspicious packages found inside that louisiana movie theater. police found a backpack and a few other items moments after the gunman's car was found.

>> the suspect stood up about 20 minutes into the showing of "trainwreck" and then began firing into the crowd before turning the gun on himself. now, within seconds a teacher inside the movie theater was able to pull the fire alarm. governor jindal says that move and the quick thinking of police officers saved lives. >> the first officers heard the gunshots and they still rang through that theater. they do an amazing job of protecting us every single day. i'm grateful for their heroism. >> three people died including the gunman, nine others were injured. some of the victims are in critical condition right now. >> now the writer and star of "trainwreck," the movie condemns the shooting. amy schumer sent out a tweet saying my heart is broken, all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in louisiana. it is 5:01. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> i'm erika gonzalez. welcome to "news4 today." it should be a beautiful friday. just happy that the weekend is

here. >> storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein has the weather headlines. >> good morning. a quiet and serene start on this friday morning. washington monument, clearly visible. don't have any of that humidity and haze in the air again this morning. fresh and cool. and then mild by mid-morning. then getting rather hot by the afternoon. up around 90. then turning more humid over the weekend. right now around the region it is cool. in fact, down to the upper 50s the panhandle of west virginia. nearby suburbs generally in the low 60s. maryland, virginia only in the upper 50s. right near the chesapeake bay in the upper 60s. away from the water just the low 60s. we'll take that on a july morning. next weather and traffic on the 1s, your walk to work forecast. now melissa is looking at slowdowns on 95. >> slowdowns on 95. 95 south here at mine road. looks like they could be clearing this construction with the vehicle getting out of the way here. that would be good to loosen

things up, because we have slow. northbound, no issues here this morning. outer loop at st. barnabas, the road work still hanging around. southeast/southwest freeway at main avenue asking you to stay right. we had a producer drive by that one. and then 29, top of the beltway, everything nice and greep and -- green and flowing just fine. >> thanks. 5:03. the man accused of killing a rockville couple on mother's day is expected in a courtroom today. scott tomaszewski attacked the couple while in bed, stabbing dick vilardo 42 times and his wife eight times. after news of the death went public, tomaszewski expressed sympathy on his facebook page. he's expected in court for a preliminary hearing later this morning. the trial begins for the woman and her lover who helped her murder her husband last august in takoma park.

larlane brown and ali zadeh are charged with first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. cecil brown was found beaten to death in his backyard. larlane brown searched for terms like poisons you can make at home before the murder. a child care worker is out of the job and facing charges of child abuse. the alleged victims are under a year old. police accused claudia roldan and they found bruises that appeared to be as a result of blunt force. when the police got involved a witness said she had seen roldan pinch other infants. news4's megan mcgrath is working on this story this morning. and she'll tell us what the owner of the day care has to say. that's coming up at 5:15. right now, president obama is in ramstein, germany, a quick stop on his way to kenya and

ethiopia. just before though, the president voiced strong support for gay rights in africa. in an interview with the bbc he said he had been quote, blunt with african leaders about gay rights. expect some delays on the roads this weekend. there's a big project shutting down lanes on a part of georgia avenue in montgomery county. melissa mollet is in the first 4 traffic center tracking work arounds. we of course will get a check in a little bit with her. molette green is breaking down what you can expect. molette, good morning to you. >> reporter: erika, good morning to you. this is a big heads up for all of you as you travel this through this area. new traffic patterns that will no doubt bring expected delays throughout the weekend. there's plenty of time to plan to avoid this area. here's what is going to happen. crews will shift on to newly

constructed lanes. this will shift lanes to one lane in each direction. state highway administration tells us you will still be able to make a left and right turn but no doubt expect your drive to be impacted. all of this happening because crews need to apply new double yellow lines and they will need to turn off traffic signals in order to be able to activate new ones among many other things that they will be doing over the weekend here. all of this part of a major effort to redesign one of the busiest areas to make it safer and work better as you drive through the area or if you are a pedestrian. all traffic lanes are expected to reopen on monday. but in the meantime, plan for a work around and melissa mollet in first 4 traffic can give you more on that. >> good morning molette. so again this weekend, it will be a mess at georgia avenue at randolph road. what molette said only one lane getting by in each direction

there. you can turn at georgia and randolph, some 15 total closures this week. pedestrians can get through. something to remember. really good alternate for this situation is going to be connecticut avenue this weekend. aaron? >> all right, thank you. 5:07. maryland state leaders are knocking millions of dollars off the cost of the in a letter obtained by news4, the transportation secretary tells county executive ike leggett that the county has to kick in an extra $40 million that's instead of the $50 million the state initially requested. a spokesperson said that leggett has agreed to the $40 million. the county council will look at the plan. prince george's county still in talks with the state over the contribution for the project. the cost went up last month when governor larry hogan scaled back rain slams into a limo and it was caught on camera. would you believe nobody was injured? what we are learning about that accident straight ahead.

brand-new problem in leesburg, we just got this alert. 15 shut down both directions at luckettes road because of a fire. more on this straight ahead. all right, thank you. 5:17. a woman entrusted with the care of infants is accused of child abuse. >> the woman worked a at high end day-care center in foggy bottom. that's where we find news4's megan mcgrath with more on how the owner is responding to these allegations. megan? >> reporter: well, good morning. the allegations are disturbing. a day care worker at the kiddie academy of d.c. west end accused of physically abusing two infants. a 3-year-old and a 7-month-old. 35-year-old claudia roldan has been charged with two counts of second degree child abuse. now, the 3-month-old examined by a doctor was found to have 12 separate bruises on the back, arm and both thighs. injuries that appeared to be

caused by blunt force or compressive force. the foggy bottom day-care center is well regarded and sends daily e-mail reports to parents. the center has an extensive security camera system and those camera images have helped police in their investigation. there is also a witness who told police that she had seen roldan pinch other infants. now, in a written statement from the owner of the kiddie academy of d.c. west end, they say we have been working closely with authorities that are conducting this investigation. the education, well-being and safety of the children in our care continues to be our priority. and of utmost importance to the staff and owners. megan mcgrath, news4. we have calls in to police right now to find out whether a man died after a shooting in the district. this happened near patterson elementary school on darrington street southwest last night. the police say the man was not conscious when the paramedics arrived. police have not released any information on a possible

shooter. the man you see here, 26 year olds, the family wants you to help catch his killer. someone shot adrian kinard last week. he and another guard were filling out paperwork when someone walked up and started shooting. his family and friends held a vigil asking anybody with any information to come forward. >> it's just very upsetting. adrian did not deserve this. he was such a loveable person. >> now the other security guard survived the shooting. police say they recovered -- they've recovered the car the suspect drove that night. the police believe they were targeted. we expect emotional testimony this morning at the sentencing for the maryland man who killed his girlfriend's 2-year-old son. clifton bernard of suitland pleaded guilty in december of 2013 to murder. excuse me, pleaded guilty in december to the 2013 murder. prosecutors say that he became angry with the boy and rammed

his head through drywall. the boy's relatives are expected to testify today. he is facing up to 70 years in prison. this morning, the man charged with killing another man on a metro train will go before a judge in two separate cases. d.c. police say this man, jasper spires stabbed american university grad kevin sutherland at the noma station on the fourth of july. police had released spires from jail in a separate assault case the day before that murder. he is due in court today to face charges in both of those cases. prince george's county police say they have arrested a man who dragged an officer with his car. danny harvell turned himself in yesterday. police say harvell sped off while an officer tried to question him last week in district heights. the officer got caught in the car's door and dragged about a hundred yards before the driver hit a tree and ran away. harvell faces attempted second degree murder and other charges. the officer has a broken leg.

there are new calls to change the names of three virginia schools named for confederate leaders. the fairfax times reports alumni of j.e.b. stuart high school and others wrote to a school board member presses again for name changes. the movement started after the racially motivated shooting at a black church in south carolina last month. the group has a change.org petition up right now and they have singled out robert e. lee high school and woodson high school. dominion virginia power has a new way to inspect power lines. small aerial drones equipped with high-tech cameras will take to the skies for the power company. the utility company says the drones could one day replace helicopters used to inspect transmission lines. the drone's first test will be next month along virginia's eastern shore. 5:21 our time right now. your weather and traffic on the 1s. how about we look outside. >> very nice out there. look at that. sun coming up. let's check in with storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein.

tom? >> erika, when you said the two words -- eastern shore, my mind went to the beach. and it's going to be great beach and pool weather here in the next couple of days although rather cool now. starting off early this morning with that clear sky. we saw that live view from the tower camera and temperatures are yeah, down near the upper 50s and 60s. rather cool for certainly late july. more like late september and that's also out of the mountains only in the upper 50s. closer to washington, it's generally near 60 in nearby suburbs. inside the beltway, 60s and 70. right near the bay in the low to mid 60s and away from the waters only 60s inland. temperatures will feel like the upper 80s today. it won't feel like 90 because it will be comfortably dry, but then the humidity begins to build on saturday. and the feels like temperature the peak will be 93. the hottest feels like temperature on sunday, 95 by the afternoon.

back down to 93 on monday as the humidity does begin to build over the weekend. hour by hour today we'll have that low humidity in place, lots of sunshine. soaring into the mid 80s by noon. near 90 by late afternoon. on saturday morning should be clear. during the afternoon a few clouds popping up. up near 90. more humid on saturday. quite humid on sunday. low 90s. sunday evening we might get a passing shower or maybe a thundershower and then monday afternoon a passing thundershower with highs near 90. still humid into midweek with highs low to mid 90s each day. only a small chance of afternoon storms wednesday, thursday and friday. and a look at your neighborhood highs next weather and traffic on the 1s. that's coming up at 5:31. melissa has an update. >> we have an update on this crash in leesburg. again, we have 15 shut down at luckettes road. best thing to do get around this, good alternate is new valley church road. no word on when this will be cleared out of the way because of the fire apparatus on the

scene. northbound connecticut avenue, east-west highway the two right lanes are still blocked. inner and outer loop, everything is rolling along nicely. 66 east of sudley road also moving along and 95 in maryland at scaggsville, northbound and southbound, no problems. see you back here at 5:24 right now. a developing story right now turkish warplanes have struck three isis targets across the border in syria. turkey's government says three f-16 jets took off from the air base earlier today. those air strikes come after isis militants in syria fired at a turkish military post killing one soldier. neighbors in tulsa, oklahoma, and a suburb are trying to cope with the horrify horrifying murders of a family of five. the two suspects in the murders the family's two teenager sons. late wednesday night officers responded to a silent 911 call and discovered a mother, father and three children stabbed to death. a 13-year-old was critically hurt and a toddler was unharmed.

police tracked the 18-year-old and 16-year-old brothers down in some nearby woods. if accused of murder, both could be charged -- the 18-year-old obviously is an adult, the 16-year-old could be charged as an adult. today, part of a california bridge that washed away in a flood will reopen. state officials say the westbound span of the i-10 bridge will reopen at noon. the eastbound span will take a little longer to fix though. the road is a vital link between l.a. and phoenix. especially for truck drivers. one man got stuck and seriously hurt when that bridge collapsed on sunday. we are now waiting to see if -- if a soccer official will be extradited. prosecutors in new york have officially asked to extradite the former president of south america's soccer confederation. the man was charged in the massive fifa corruption scandal. he is under house arrest and his lawyer said they're aware of the

request but they don't know how quickly they will move. so reports of a lion on the loose in milwaukee have some unexpected consequences. a man who thought he spotted the lion shot and hurt a dog. by mistake. the milwaukee police say they have investigated about two dozen calls of apparent lion sightings. someone gave police officers cell phone video of an animal that was a lionish creature. fortunately the dog survived. wow. that is the last thing you want to see, dropping your child off at school. it's a leopard that made its way into a school in southern india yesterday. a forest official managed to lock the animal in the empty classroom. he did get hurt when the leopard pounced on him. real world stuff right here, folks. police managed to get all the kids out before anyone else was

we're keeping you updated on that developing story in louisiana. a quick response being credited with saving lives there. >> two police officers were in the parking lot of the theater in lafayette when a gunman stood up and started shooting. three people died including that gunman. nine others were injured. some of those victims are in critical condition right now. and the theater remains an active crime seen. . >> it's a pretty horrific scene

then by 11:00 the low 80s with lots of sunshine. neighborhood highs near 90 in washington. nearby neighborhoods around the beltway around the upper 80s. shenandoah valley and the mountains mid 80s for the highs and then mid 80s around the chesapeake bay. a little breeze off the water more humid, but overall a delightful day on the way today for playing golf, tennis, shooting some hoops. a great day for all kinds of outdoor work and recreation. now, melissa has a look at the traffic this morning. what's going on now? >> this problem still in leesburg. 15 shut down at lucketts road. your alternate is new valley church road to get around that because of a fire. 270 southbound after 80, a report of some debris in the slow down as you approach 80. could be something in the road for you this morning. would be, southeast/southwest freeway, stay past the crash. 66 overall looking good.

95 northbound a little slow through dale city, 270 at falls road no major problems there. looking good. >> thanks, melissa. just hours before last night's deadly shooting in louisiana, in that movie theater, president obama spoke out about gun laws. he told the bbc gun control was the issue that has left him quote, the most stymied. the president says he's frustrated the u.s. doesn't have what he calls common sense laws for gun safety. he also pointed out fewer than 100 americans have been killed by terrorism since 9/11. yet tens of thousands have been killed by gun violence. police in arlington want you to be particularly vigilant about who you let into or out of your office buildings. police say this man is a serial burglar responsible for 20 thefts in just 14 months. he targets officers in arlington right after opening or just before closing. he slips inside picks up several laptops and walks right

out the door. >> definitely a little bit brazen. he is traveling in daylight hours and obviously is not afraid of being seen. >> now, police say the suspect wears a cap and carries a backpack as you can see here. he also keeps a towel wrapped around his hand. we are waiting for the autopsy of a texas woman found dead in a jail cell. but preliminary findings show that sandra bland took her own life. marks around her neck are consistent with suicide by hanging and officials say she didn't have defensive injuries. prosecutors added there were 30 cuts on bland's wrists that they say were probably self-inflicted. bland's family maintains she would not have hanged herself. bland's arrest and death are under investigation. her funeral being held tomorrow in chicago. new developments in the

mysterious death of a georgia teen whose body was found rolled up inside a gym mat. johnson's death has gone unsolved for two years but yesterday cell phones and computers were seized from two of the former classmates. investigators concluded that johnson died in a freak accident, but the teen's parents insist someone killed their son. a new visitor center complex at the flight 93 national memorial in shanksville pennsylvania, will open on september 10th. it features an education center and a walkway tracing the flight's path on september 11, 2001. tickets are free but timed because the park service expects heavy crowds there. for ticket information, search flight 93 memorial on the nbc washington app. a public meeting has been scheduled about the merger. nova health is combining four to create one northern virginia regional health system. the meeting will be held in august at 11:30 at george mason university in manassas. august 5th.

federal prosecutors want a former peanut company executive to receive a life sentence. stewart parnell was convicted for the deadly salmonella outbreak. the prosecutors said the company falsified test results to cover up peanut butter tainted with salmonella. it was responsible for nine deaths. his attorney called the life sentence recommendation absurd. a federal judge will hand down a sentence in september. we are learning about a court ruling that will impact all you butt dialers out there. turns out when you sit on your phone, you accidentally call somebody you legally can't expect any privacy. this stems from an appeals court ruling after someone butt dialed a woman and she recorded the caller about how her boss was about to be fired. we get ready for the weekend and the return unfortunately of humidity. say it ain't so, right?

tippy canoe county in illinois. as we understand it five people have been killed as a result of an accident that we know involved two tractor-trailers and at least five other vehicles. reports are that there may have been a child involved here, a child they be among the dead here. it's been hours since this accident first happened. there was a construction site apparently in this area. traffic had slowed and looks like one of the tractor-trailers may have rear-ended some vehicles. five or six vehicles involved beyond the tractor-trailers. we are continuing to look for more information on this story. as we get it we'll bring it to you. another black bear spotted in northern virginia. new cameras were installed in great falls. we told you about this yesterday. so a dog there in great falls looks like it survived a bear attack this week. if you look at all those marking on that poor little thing. police are not sure if it's the

right now the latest developments on the movie theater shooting in louisiana. overnight, lafayette's police chief said they have identified a 58-year-old gunman here. they are not releasing his name as of yet. we know he started shooting from the back of that movie theater about 20 minutes or so into a showing of "trainwreck." he then shot himself according to police. two moviegoers were killed

>> erika, good morning. here's how this already complex construction project shifts drivers in a big way. travel on both georgia and randolph road will shift to just one lane in each direction. state highway tells us that you will be able to make a left and right turn. this lane shift happening tonight at 9:00. and this will certainly impact your drive through this very busy interchange. to give crews basically space to work on new double yellow lines here. they're also turning off the traffic signals to be able to activate new ones and all of this part of an on going $34 million redesign to cut congestion and to make it safer to drive and walk here. all traffic lanes are expected to reopen on monday. the best bet for you is to avoid this area if at all possible. your alternative is 185
