straight spots of the beltway. it's going ton throughout the weekend. alternating lane closures on the inner and outer loop. we actually had three lanes closed. that was over at 7:00 this morning. what you are going to see are one and two lane closures as you go through this area. you'll start to see back ups around central avenue, at least in one direction and probably ritchie marlboro in the other. this is what's happening because of concrete repairs going on on the beltway. not a lot of concrete here, but overpasses. this is a heavily traveled area. this is a heavily stressed section of the beltway. you might see how light traffic seems these days. a lot of people on vacation and school is out. that's when the crews take the opportunity to do much needed repairs. it may cause hardship now, but you'll thank them in september on your daily commute. derrick ward news 4.

>> thanks. new this morning, one man died following a shooting in the district. it happened not far from alabama avenue southeast in the fort stanton neighborhood. we brought the breaking news. paramedics rushed the victim to the hospital where he died overnight. d.c. police have not released suspect information. >> the coast guard searching for two men who disappeared while swimming off the light station in maryland. the men vanished around 7:30 last night. chopper 4 flying above it. search boats shined their lights on the water trying to find the men. police are participating in the search. officials spent all night looking for the men. they are going to be back out there this morning. many people mourned the lives lost in the movie theater shooting.

several students and people from the community came together to show respect and solidarity. investigators are trying to figure out why the gunman opened fire, killing two people, hurting nine others. >> police say john houser planned to escape, but shot and killed himself as officers responded. jay gray reports. >> reporter: panic after shots ring out in a crowded theater. >> chaos everywhere. cop cars, sirens. a day after that chaos there's an eerie silence here. police and federal agents continue their investigation inside the grand theater. the scene so grizzly, it -- >> it was a horrific scene there, to see where the projectiles were to see the blood on the floor and smell it. >> reporter: investigators say the man responsible is 59-year-old john russel houser. >> the shooter took his time and

was somewhat methodical. >> wounding nine and killing two before turning the gun on himself. a musician mom and local business owner was killed in the attack. 21-year-old mayci breaux also lost her life. >> don't lose sight of the fact they had a vision a name, a future. it wasn't to die as they did, horribly, in this theater. >> reporter: we are learning more about the alleged gunman. houser had been in the area less than a month living in a local hotel. court documents show his family asked for a protective order in 2008 because of a history of mental issues, i.e., manic depression and bipolar and because he exhibited extreme erratic behavior. still, there continue to be questions here the most difficult for investigators and this grieving community. why? jay gray, nbc news, la fayette

what the heck is going on here. yeah, she just zoomed right into the store. >> she sure did. a driver crashed into a 7-eleven. a guy had to jump the counter to get out of the way. the driver hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. fortunately, no one hurt. a developing story out of arkansas. a 2-year-old boy died after police say his father left him inside a locked car. the father forgot the baby in the car for four hours. once he realized what happened, he drove to a neighbor's house for help. they are investigating the incident and have not announced the father will be charged. >> a consumer alert.

it has to do with 52,000 glass tea pitchers because they can break or leak. it involved the 64 ounce glass pitchers. they received 50 reports of the pitchers breaking leaking and in at least two cases, causing minor burns. you can return them for a replacement or a gift card. venezuela is running out of beer. you heard me right. the nation's association of liquor says they ran out of ingredients to make the beer. many stores in the capital still have beer. seven others are not getting deliveries. venezuela's leading beer company is struggling to get the raw materials for cans, bottle caps and plastic packaging. everything you need to get the good stuff in. >> that would not do well here. news 4 working to keep your family safe and on the road. where you can get a free booster seat check before taking the next road trip.

hold her funeral in chicago. her arrest in southeast texas sparked national outrage. a texas prosecutor says medical examiners ruled her death suicide by hanging. the 28-year-old was found dead in her jail cell last week. the family maintains she would not have taken her own life. the medical examiner says the autopsy found in wounds of sign of a struggle. the young woman's death and arrest are under investigation. she was pulled over in a routine traffic stop. 37-year-old chad bailey accused of yelling racial slurs at two men. bailey suggests he had a weapon and they thought they saw a knife. bailey was carrying scissors when he was arrested. the man charged in a deadly stabbing aboard a metro train will undergo an evaluation. they will see whether he's

competent to stand trial. he's charged with killing sutherland july 4th. darcy spencer shows new video shah shows the suspect moments before and after the crime. >> reporter: prosecutors say this just released video shows metro murder suspect jasper spires. he was wearing a red bandana, carrying a nike backpack, running through the station after allegedly stabbing a man to death on a train. at one point you see him stop and turn around, when an investigator testified. they ran to a trash can shown at the far top right of your screen and dumped a bloody knife used to kill kevin sutherland. they say in his haste, spires dropped items including a pair of camouflage pants and kept going. earlier, in a series of videos,

spires put on a pair of gloves as he got to the top of the escalator before the crime and again before the killing. the video allegedly shows spires at the fare card machine looking for victims to rob pretending to get a fare card and following a couple as they walk away. his attorney calls it a case of mistaken identity. >> none of the witnesses that were on the subway have identified my client as the perpetrator. >> reporter: they are confident's the man that stabbed him on the fourth of july. >> we all lose a piece of ourselves when we see something so brutal. >> darcy spencer reporting there. >> montgomery county police got the guy responsible for stealing from firefighters. he's charged with several counts of theft. he broke into eight cars at the

inland fishery is looking into sightings in the creek. this is near willow landing marina. conservation officers will be on the lookout for an alligator. they have not received reports of alligators in the county david? >> growing momentum to make big changes in fairfax county to help keep mentally ill offenders out of jail. it comes days after a northern virginia -- julie carey was on the trip showing how it lifts hopes for loved ones locked up. >> reporter: joanna walker says her son came a long way since 2011. he began ranting as she drove, hitting her with a water bottle. he was taken to the fairfax county jail, where his condition worsened. >> i feel he should not have been taken to jail. he was clearly in a psychotic crisis and mental health crisis.

he should have been taken to the hospital. >> it took michael years to reconcile with his parents and recover with the help of medication. joanna is thrilled to learn fairfax county leaders traveled to san antonio to divert mentally ill offenders into treatment instead of jail. >> right now, there's momentum. i hope the jail diversion initiative will be put into track tis. >> the csb headquarters is already equipped with secure areas where police can make hand offs to treatment. >> there's going to be a cost but also tremendous rewards and benefits for the people that are suffering from mental illness as well as our community. >> reporter: one key to the success in an san antonio is they team the team training course. the police department is picking up the pace of its training.

to get you up to speed on a top story. a man is dead on langston place, not far from alabama place. paramedics rushed him to the hospital where he died overnight. >> many people are mourning the lives lost at the louisiana movie theater shooting. they held a candle light vigil. investigators are trying to figure out why the gunman opened fire killing two and hurting nine others. this weekend, you could run into road closures on the beltway. what you are looking at you can see the dust from the construction going on. this is happening at ritchie marlboro road. that image is temporarily unavailable. there it is back up for you. it is happening on the beltway. they are shutting down one lane at a time until noon. up to three lanes on the inner and outer loop, could be closed at any one time. it's happening until 5:00.

chattanooga shooting that is killed five members of the military. the gunman turned the gun on himself. >> mass shootings are something we talk about all too often these days. with the shooting in la fayette, many are wondering how it happened again. peter alexander has more on the shootings that are becoming the new normal. >> reporter: if someone asks about the theater shooting, the response could be which one? right now, a colorado jury is deliberating whether james holmes should get the death penalty for the massacre three years ago. >> at what point are we saturated or become numb? >> we have mass murders every week now. come on. let's do something. >> reporter: across america, dozens of mass shootings since the newtown massacre in 2012 at a church, a school a military recruiting center. president obama told the bbc the failure to pass tougher gun

isis to work as a nurse made his first court appearance. they arrested him as he landed in sydney. it's related to the involvement in the conflict in syria. they say isis militants forced him to work as a medic. >> dob mcdonnell wants the full court to hear his case. they upheld the decision. his lawyers say the panel did not sufficiently outline the difference between bribery and political courtesy. they found mcdonnell and his wife both guilty. a change of sorts for the montgomery police department. they are going to let you apply for a job, even if you never went to college. they usually have a mandatory 60 hours of credit. if you spent three years on a

visuals. we are joined by dan, who is playing the iconic role of peter pan. welcome to washington. >> thank you, thank you. >> it's been playing for a few weeks now. >> yes. >> what's the reaction been? >> um we have seen everyone from little children to you know, the elderly laughing and crying, singing along. it's been a positive positive reception in tyson's corner. all of us in the cast are happy about that. we are thankful to see the kind of reception we are getting. all the hard work we have put into it and just to see everyone smile and laugh at this, you know, very very powerful story. >> you know, adults seem to be enjoying it as much as the kids are. >> yeah. there's something for everyone. there's singing dancing, circus acrobatics and all of really a lot going on. everyone can find that one thing

that they take away from the experience. wow, really something i have never seen before. >> tell me a little bit about your background in terms of acting, singing, dancing and how that plays into performing in a tent with all this stuff flying around you? >> it's wild. it's great. our cast is comprised of people primarily actors or primarily studied in musical theater. half of the people come from strictly the circus background. everyone is kind of, you know, trading their skills back and forth helping everyone out and really grow. what we all have to offer and, yeah, we all get out there together, i just really enhance everyone's you know, overall performance. we build off each other, we take little things here and there

that we have learned from you know just watching everyone. it makes for a stellar performance yeah. >> how do you put your own personal stamp on a character that's been done for so long by so many different actors? >> it's hard. it is such an iconic role. people come to the theater you know, thinking it is going to be the disney i'm peter pan or any other you know, famous rendition of the character. you want to stay true to the spirit of peter pan. you have to put flavor in there. that's where the dichotomy you know keeping it, keeping the structure there, but also, making it different. we are doing the novel. we are doing j.m. barry's peter pan, not the disney version. it can be darker but it's a little richer and offers a new,

we are following a developing story in australia. a woman saw a shark attack and kill her father while the two were diving off the coast of

tasmania. she set off an emergency flair and called for help. it started when she returned to the boat and noticed her father did not come up. she dived back into the water and saw the shark attack her father. they pulled the man up but it was too late. on july 16th the parents rushed him to stafford hospital. he has drugs in his system. officials aren't saying how the drugs got there. both parents have been arrested. we spoke to one doctor who cautions parents about the dangers of drugs legal and illegal in the house around small kids. the biggest precaution you can take is locking your cabinets. >> it's one thing to have one that is difficult to open. you need a locked and secured

place for opiates. opiate addiction is at an all-time historic high. >> the doctor says this doesn't stop with young kids. it cons as they grow up. the risk becomes teenagers stealing the medications to sell them. today you and the kids can find out what happens at the museum after dark. the national archives is having the last sleepover of the night. it's open to kids from age 8 to 12 years old. at least one adult is required, per group of four children. it starts at 6:30 until 8:30 tomorrow morning. it's pricey, though. $125 per person. you can still register online but check that out. how many people can say they have slept underneath history. >> absolutely right. >> the declaration of independence. >> the star spang led banner.
