10:15 am
>> well, it's another busy week on the political front. the race for the white house is starting to get real interesting and president obama is talking about gun control again. >> joining us now to talk about it, moderator of "meet the press," chuck todd. and we want to begin with hillary clinton. because we know she came out yesterday and said she's going to testify in the benghazi hearing but it seems her campaign has been so consumed with the e-mail situation. is it having an impact on voters already? >> she is having a hard time of getting out of the cloud. on any given day, this stuff can consume her campaign. she gave a big wall street speech and then the e-mail story consumed her. yesterday in iowa she had to respond to the e-mail story. when is she going to testify, all these things. you know what? you can't help but wonder if that's having an impact because we have two new polls out today, iowa and new hampshire both by the way, yes early primary states but important swing states. she's way up side down. she has massive majorities, 57%
10:16 am
in iowa and new hampshire, so that means a lot of independent voters have an unfavorable view of her. the tone and the sort of cloud is impacting her with independents. something to start worrying about. >> the vice president keeping an eye on that? >> you can't help but wonder. i think, look, his timetable is much different in his own head and i think that, you know, if he gets in, it will probably be a personal decision. he's still mourning his son. you talk to people close to him he's just not thinking about the cam bane. but it's something that the clinton campaign is sort of line nervous about. nothing they can do about it. if he gets in it does scramble the entire race. >> well, let's talk about somebody who's in the race already and really gaining some ground traction and that's bernie sanders. >> i thought you were going to say trump. i'm glad you didn't. because bernie -- >> i was going to say trump.
10:17 am
>> but you're right. the biggest story this summer if donald trump didn't exist it would be the rise of sanders. it's bernie all -- it's why i think he's gaining some traction. he's authentic. it's clear that nobody is telling -- nobody has focus grouped his answers. he didn't talk to a pollster. he gets defensive on the issue of guns and where he's sort of a little bit outside of the democratic base's mainstream on the issue of african-american, on black lives matter, immigration, some of the activists believes he needs to talk about. but you start to understand when you see this interview why he's touching a nerve. it's a similar nerve that trump is touching. he doesn't like the comparison, but they're both touching on the economic -- and they're doing it different ways. both hillary clinton and jeb busch bush if they're the nominees
10:18 am
they have to deal with the economically challenged base that's upset. >> say what you want about trump, but people are finding his message refreshing. >> it's the same thing. what ever you want to call it, it comes across as authentic just like sanders i think it's a lesson for a lot of the candidates. just stop it. when you're shut up -- >> just like the producers. >> we have to go to the other chuck. >> one too many on this set. >> if you want more chuck, see him on "meet the press" every sunday right here on nbc4. it comes up after "news4 today." thanks, chuck. >> well, we'll get to you in a minute. scary video from an amusement park in kentucky. it was a ride that tipped over and it had a bunch of people on it. looked like a swing ride that tipped over. it hurt seven people including children. sheriff's deputies said most of the injured people did not need

ambulances but a good number did go to the e.r. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a small plane to crash into the neighborhood. take a look here. the pilot, a passenger and a woman on the ground were killed. paramedics rushed five others to the hospital. the plane crash came moments after taking off from the nearby airfield. >> right outside my room. >> if i was that close to that i would not be filming it. but this is some video into the news4 newsroom. investigators are trying to figure out what caused the hotel fire to go up in flames there. the fire broke out yesterday at the cosmopolitan hotel. the cabanas and the artificial plants on the roof helped fuel that fire, make it bigger. a few people were hurt because of smoke inhalation. crews rushed one to the hospital. meanwhile, firefighters put the fire out and the hotel did eventually reopen. but what a scene. >> wow. >> we're used to seeing neat things and dramatic things on
10:20 am
the vegas strip, but -- >> i'm with you. if i see that view out my window i'm moving down the fire escape and heading out to the parking lot. what are we expecting today? it will be hot for us today. >> not oppressive though. >> not too bad. but that's coming later in the week. if you wanted your weather extra oppressive, wednesday and thursday will be custom made for you. there's our view outside. a very hazy start to the morning. temperatures moving up fast. we're already 81 now at reagan national airport and the dew point the measure of moisture in the atmosphere, the closer that number gets to 70 the more uncomfortable it starts to feel. so you'll notice it yesterday that number was in the upper 50s and low 60s. quite a bit of humidity to the atmosphere. if you're in the shade with a breeze, it's a pretty morning outside. out in the parking lots or out in the sunshine it feels warmer than this. 82 in winchester and fredericksburg. 79 in leesburg and 79 in brandy wine, maryland. here's your chances for rain today.
10:21 am
not everyone is going to get rained on. best rain chances will be east of the blue ridge and through the i-95 corridor. there's 2:00, 4:00 this afternoon. a risk of showers here in montgomery county. but not necessarily prince george's at that time. they fade away and a couple more bubble up behind them. hit and miss shower chances are there. no severe weather is expected today. i couldn't rule out a rumble or two of thunder. any time you hear of thunder rumbling that's the sign to get off the golf courses get out of the pool. hour by hour today temperatures hovering up to near 90 degrees for much of the afternoon. best chances for showers after 4:00 or 5:00. up to about 9:00 or 10:00. weather slow downs, nothing to worry about today or tomorrow morning. what am i saying?
10:22 am
better chance of showers for tomorrow morning, maybe a slow down on the monday afternoon commute. traffic has been fairly light during the week. that's all the sunshine out there for now. showers across parts of ohio the leading edge of the weather front that will bring us hit and miss showers. if you're traveling expect bad weather in chicago and memphis and could cause airline delays. if you're sticking it out here at home, it will be nice. if you're making the trip down to the beach great beach weather coming up. today, looks like a beauty down at the coastline. ocean water temperature now is at 80 degrees. best chance for rain at the beach is coming up tomorrow. hot hot hot around here. not much in the way of a rain chance. outside of your thursday it will be 96. >> whoa. thanks, chuck. the unusual rescue mission to save a strande

10:26 am
up as the tide falls. it was something else. >> reporter: nearby, a whale research team. they radioed for help. >> we grabbed ropes, we grabbed buckets, anything that we thought we'd be able to use. >> reporter: volunteers made a water pump out of duct tape and an old hose, draping the whale in wet blankets, showering her in seawater for hours to keep her cool. as the mammal's family circled off shore. >> at first, you could see her breathing was getting a little faster. but after a little while i think she knew that we were there to help her. >> reporter: all the rescuers could do was keep her harm and wait for high tide. after eight agonizing hours -- the water rushed in. and the whale finally broke free. >> yes. >> reporter: finally reunited and on the hunt again.
