growing up, thinking that you are invincible, nothing going to happen to you, all of a sudden, something like that to happen. >> a grieving boy shares the pain of losing his father and his uncle in the chesapeake bay. good evening, everyone. some absolutely heartbreaking, gut wrenching story. jason brown was swimming with his father and uncle off a beach when the tide pulled them under. jason was the only one to make it safely back to shore. the last words that he heard from his dad, i love you. news4's derrick ward talked to the family. >> reporter: sunday afternoon white caps off cove point, there's no searching now. the water's too rough. on saturday searchers found

daniel brown. his brother, doug, is still out there somewhere. jason is brown is with family and friends. he has memories of his dad. >> he always brought the family together and it's good to have him you know, bring them all together in this time. >> reporter: jason was swimming with his father, daniel and uncle, doug, friday when it happened. >> the tide pulled us to you the a little bit. okay, we have to go back in. we started swimming back, we weren't making it we were swimming in place. >> reporter: doug tried to swim back and get help. >> i was standing with my dad and he was -- he just told me -- told me he loved me told me to go ahead. >> reporter: it was the last time he saw his father the last time he saw his uncle. they were two peas in a pod they did lots together. >> reporter: being on the water was always a big part of the family's together time. both brothers were excellent swimmers and even better family men. >> they loved their mother. their mother was central to their world and their kids. >> reporter: their mother remembers them as the best sons a mother could have, kind to everyone. the parents were divorced but

came together for the children. what makes it sadder, the same family suffered a tragic loss off the very same waters a few years back. moses' father, bob was lost when the fishing boat el toro ii sank in the bay in 1992. >> i think life's just cruel cruel sometimes. >> reporter: the family perseveres with the memories of the good times and the bay. >> we will probably all go there and remember them. >> reporter: memories what could inseparable memories meant to each other. >> tried his hard toast make everybody happy, and i just -- i like the thought of that. >> reporter: derrick ward, news4. this tragedy is being deeply felt in the bloomingdale community in d.c. doug brown was one of the owners of costa brave virginia on first street northwest. condolences for the family are pouring in as the neighborhood learns about the drownings. doug is being remembered for his high energy and his warm spirit. residents say costa brave virginia was the pride of his life, outside of his family, of course.

>> not only was he an owner, but also a neighbor. so he lived right here in the kind of situation where you're just thinking about losing someone who owns an important business in the community, thinking about losing a neighbor, for many of us a friend. >> we checked in with the calvert sheriff's office today and we are told that they have not yet been able to recover doug's body. we are going to send you an alert on our nbc washington app as this story continues to develop. a truck crashes into a woman inside her apartment, sending the woman to the trauma center and landing the driver behind bars. howard county police released these pictures. officers say the driver smashed into an apartment this morning. the driver then just took off on foot but later returned to the scene. he now faces several charges, including negligent driving. the victim is now in stable condition. two people are dead after a boat crashed near the key bridge in baltimore early this morning. investigators say the boat hit a

concrete object in the water just 50 yards from the bridge, but the bridge was not damaged. now, a short time ago, we learned the names of the victims, wendy lawson and kimberly irvin of baltimore. both women were found in the water by search crews. >> we expect that we will be interviewing all the, you know, survivors and we also, you know will be talking to people at the places they stopped. >> police also identified the operator of the boat as timothy wilson of baltimore. six other people were injured in the crash and had to be taken to the hospital. right now it's not clear how serious their injuries are. this next story many of you have been following in our nbc washington app. and of course, nbcwashington.com. a man killed after attacking a woman in west virginia may have been a serial killer who struck before in vegas. police say the woman shot this man, 45-year-old neil falls in self-defense at her home in charleston earlier this month.

jeffrey and wade braithwaite at a home yesterday. the two men are accused of acting as accomplices in the shooting. police are still looking for 21-year-old alan bangel. he was responsible for killing cody lacy at the home on lavender lane yesterday. two people were shot early this morning in prince george's county. police responded to the call about 130 in the morning in hyattsville. officers found two men with gunshot wounds. both were taken to the hospital. one is expected to survive. the other man does have life-threatening injuries have what we are told at this time. meanwhile right now, crews are recon figuring the lanes at the intersection of georgia avenue and randolph road in wheaten. traffic will be down to bun lane in each direction on both roads during the construction. crews should finish by the monday morning rush hour. the government slaps one of the world's top automakers with a record fine. what fiat chrysler has to do to make amends and why you may be

it was like a bomb went off. >> employees not answering the question. five or six times, where are the stairs? and we were met with blank stares. >> we are learning more about the scary moments after this fire shot through the cosmopolitan hotel in las vegas. while the fire department was less than a mile away and firefighters arrived quickly, as you heard from that last guest some say hotel employees were not helping evacuate the massive building. fire broke out on the 14th there are pool area yesterday. only two people had minor injuries. a heavy police presence in this neighborhood in milwaukee, but they are not looking for a criminal. they are hoping to find the elusive milwaukee lion. witnesses tell police they saw what appears to be a lion and a cub roaming around in the park last night. the first sighting was on

monday. since then people are tweeting about it using the the #milwaukeelion. you can check out nbcwashington.com for more on the search and what the milwaukee zoo is saying about their lions. the u.s. government is getting ready to hit fiat chrysler with a big fine for failing to notify consumers about potentially dangerous car defect he is. officials are expected to announce the $105 million fine tomorrow. fiat chrysler will have to buy back some cars that were defective. the company will also have to offer incentives to owners. you can read more about that fine and hear fiat's response on the nbc washington app and we will stay on top of that for tomorrow. d.c. activates its heat emergency plan because the temperatures have snaked above 90 degrees and storm team4 meteorologist chuck bell says you better get used to it. i'm darcy spencer live in

dozen of cars found with spray paint all over them. police are trying to figure out where this paint came from. people in the overbrook area

discovered the damage last night and whoever damaged the cars is still out there. darcy spencer is live in centerville with more on the investigation. darcy? >> reporter: erika this is really frustrating for people who own these vehicles that were vandalized vandalized. we are live on lee overlook road. if you look here this tells the story of what happened in this neighborhood last night. we received a tip from a viewer who lives right here in this neighborhood telling us that up to 35 cars and vans had been vandalized with this spray paint somewhere between 9 and 10:00 last night. it looks to me we saw several ourselves on the side of the vehicle that faces the sidewalk but looks like someone may have been walking through this neighborhood with a can of spray paint painting and spray paining up to three dozen vehicles. let's hear now from one owner who came out and found his van vandalized this morning. >> this morning we were getting ready for church and i live down the street right here a little bit.

and i noticed that there was some spray paint on my minivan. so i decided to take a walk and see if any of the other vehicles were vandalized. sure enough, i saw this one and that minivan right there which has a lot more some writing and some words. i don't know some kind of gang sign or whatever, but there's definitely cars that have been damaged like this. >> reporter: it was just last weekend that seven cars and trucks were set on fire in a neighborhood not too far from here in centerville about a couple of miles away. fairfax county police were able to arrest some juveniles in connection with those cases but at this point, we checked in with their facts county police, they did receive reports of damage last night but whoever did this still on the loose. erika, back to you. >> darcy spencer, thanks so very much. somebody is stealing stuff from cars in lotrton and burke and police are reminding if you like it lock it.
