employee admits to helping two inmates escape. why she's striking a deal with prosecutors. and it's a hot one. some neighborhoods in the triple digits right now. i will show you how much longer this high heat will be sticking around. first at 4:00 a story we broke in our washington app. asbestos found in railcars on the road on the tracks in service every day. as the service looks to get rid of the old cars it's also dealing with removing that asbestos asbestos. adam is in front of this story at the metro station this morning. adam, what have you learned? >> reporter: what we learned this afternoon is that 280 railcars in the metro fleet do contains a asbestos. those are the oldest known it was 1,000 series that you have probably heard so much on. asbestos is in a sealed area that is not accessible to

riders. metro says you can't touch it. you can't get to it or grab it. metro says it poses no risks to riders or employees. asbestos is known to be linked to a host of illnesses. >> i thought asbestos was almost completely gone everywhere. >> not in the 1,000 series. >> i will be avoiding those as much as possible. >> reporter: now metro says it is working to retire these 40-year-old railcars. we will have much more coming up for you at 5:00 and 6:00. >> thanks adam. storm team 4 tracking blistering heat and isolated showers coming this afternoon. feels like temperatures sored over the 100 degree mark today. veronica johnson is in the storm center. really steamy out there. >> we have had neighbors top out with heat index values in the triple digits and yes we are tracking more storms.

ongoing repairs will have part of bradley boulevard in bethesda shut down through the night. we have more details and ways to get around this mess. melissa? >> reporter: you have got to think about getting around this one for sure. it is still a mess. this is a 16 inch pipe that broke last night. it snarled traffic all morning. just a mess. as you mentioned going continue into tonight. we're just talking about that section of bradley boulevard there at huntington. we watched it all morning. it took a long time to drain the water. you can see the crews on the scene. we're taubing about gas lines and storm drains. we have 25 people without water there. just causing a mess for a lot of folks. best idea here i would say tonight is if you have somebody coming that way, tell them to avoid bradley all together.

take wilson lane and river road. anything but that section of bradley boulevard because you're going get stuck wiggling your way through the neighborhoods. and tonight tomorrow morning. >> sit is a busy intersection on a normal day but when a car crashed into a power poll. still closed right now. the crash left power poles and wires dangling precariously across the road. dominion power crews had been hard at work trying to fix the mangled mess. police are detouring traffic around that area. dominion hopes to have the problem fixed within the hour. joyce mitchell wept in court as she signed a plea deal today. she is the new york prison worker who helped two convicted murderers escape. mitchell is facing years in prison. she admitted to packing hacksaw

blades into frozen hamburger meat andleing them into prison. they captured david sweat near the canadian border. police today are trying to solve a murder that is more than one month old. the resident of this townhouse went out for a walk the evening of june 12th. bradley combs was beaten so badly that he died five days later in the hospital. today detectives went door to door passing out fliers and looking for witnesses. detectives shared with us new information from their investigation. >> the spectacle of 20 people watching a fight it surprises me that no one has come forward.

>> there is testimony that needs to come forward. crime solvers is offering a $10,000 reward for arrest or indictment. back to you. >> now the idea of a hit and run aspect. police say jose reyes was driving a truck that hit a man crossing the street. the vehicle was discovered in hamilton, virginia, but so far no sign of reyes. police say man attacked a woman while she was walking home. the woman caught off the attacker and escaped without getting hurt. >> the public response online has been a mix of praise and

our hot pattern will continue at or above 90 degrees. >> the mothers of two missing boaters insist their 14-year-old sons will be found alive. >> the boys have been missing since friday when they left in a small boat to go fishing right before a storm rolled in. their overturned boat was found near daytona beach sunday. the coast guard has expanded the search north to savanna, georgia. both have grown up around boats and their mothers say they have the skills to survive. >> we know that they are doing everything that they possibly can to stay afloat and wait for us to come and get them. >> this isn't new to them. these boys have been doing this it's not even second nature at this point. it's in their blood. >> the boat was found with its engine cover and two life

we're following a breaking story in rockville. four people hurt including two children after a crash on rockville pike. we're told all of the injuries are mineor. only one vehicle was involved. two lanes of the pike are closed. we will keep an eye on the situation and let you know when we learn more. >> you may be seeing the olympic flame on the national mall. the district is now back in the running to host the 2024 games. boston's support as been with

drawn leaving dc los angeles and san francisco as the finalists. we have been talking with people involved in the discussions to bring the games here. why is boston out? >> the boston bid was losing momentum but the final straw was when the mayor refused to sign a letter mandated by the u.s. olympic committee that the boston taxpayers would guarantee any cost overruns that came their way in preparing and getting ready for the olympics. dc has already signed that letter. they have signed those letters and gone through the bidding process. that is why dc is back in the running. >> what's next in the process? >> it's up to the u.s. olympic committee. everybody wants the mayor and committee to get out there and say we're here and we're still interested but it's not up to them. it's up to the u.s. olympic committee to decide one of two things. do they want to submit another city or drop out of the race all together. >> what are dc's chances? >> a lot better than they were

puts the blame on the co-pilot. federal transportation officials says the co-pilot unlocked a slowing mechanism too early and then set the stage for the accident. the co-pilot was killed in the crash last october. the pilot was injured. the pair were testing a new space ship that hopes to one day offer sub orbital space tourist flights. and new video linked to the mass shooting in lafayette, louisiana. this is the accused shooter john houser checking into the motel six where he allegedly planned the shooting. it shows him walking through a hall just two days before he shot 11 people killing two of them before killing himself. the body of bobbi kristina

brown is being moved to a local funeral home. the service takes place on saturday. the 22-year-old daughter of bob bobby brown and whitney houston has been in hospice. this is one of the most read stories on nbc washington.com. the fda is banning imports of fresh cilantro because a recent government investigation found human waste and toilet paper in the fields where it's grown. it's the same region linked to stomach illnesses last year. the ban will continue until they can prove that the product is safe. >> it's almost second nature to call local crabs maryland crabs. >> but they should be called

>> breaking news at the live desk, news 4 has learned a dc fire lieutenant has been charged with duty after a 1-year-old boy died from choking on a grape earlier this year. a 1-year-old boy was choking on a grape and dc fire did not send the closest available unit. a dc fire department lieutenant has been charged with ne glektive duty and failure to provide assistance to the public a 49 page internal report on the incident shows the lieutenant failed to properly notify dispatchers of the status of the medical units. there were problems with new computer tablets being used and that that lieutenant was not familiar with the new technology. in addition to these charges which are not criminal the

hands amputated when he was 2, but that hasn't dampened his joyous spirit in the least. doctors recently performed the first ever pediatric double hand implant on zion were it isn't the surgery that is inspiring everybody it's the patient. >> a lack of hands didn't hold this 8-year-old back from much. playing guitar foosball and even peek a boo with his little sister. doctors were force to amputate his hands and feet at age 2 to save his life from a severe infection. he also endured a kidney transplant, the organ donated by his mother. >> it was a risk. >> the fact that he was already on anti-rejection drugs coupled with an amazingly upbeat

wearing a black and white striped uniform the woman wept. >> she could spend up to 7 years behind bars. >> removed from her shackles, she wiped away tears as she signed off on a plea deal for her role in helping two murderers escape the state correction center. >> she got in over her head in something she never should have started. she's paying the price now. she realizes that she made a horrible mistake. >> wearing a striped prison jump suit, her voice was soft and cracking as she told the judge she understood the terms of her agreement as she pled guilty. the prison seamstress admitted

to smuggling blades screwdrivers and other tools into the prison in frozen meat to help the inmates tunnel out of the facility. >> because the evidence was so overwhelming, ms. mitchell as acknowledged her guilt, obviously by appearing in court and entering a plea. she wanted to expedite her case proceeding and moved on. >> mitchell will spend up to seven years behind bars and pay a $6,000 fine. she will not pay any additional charges for any alleged sexual conduct with the inmates and allegations that she was involved in a plot to kill her husband who also worked in the facility. formal sentencing in the case is set for september. jay gray, nbc news. and an arrest in the death of a missing child found dead last night in california. a body believed to be that of madyson middleton was discovered in a dumpster. she had been missing since

sunday. in custody this afternoon, a 15-year-old boy who lives in the same complex. police say there are no other suspects. a day care center is out of business after two little boys were severely burned during a trip to a splash park. employees let the kids play outside all day without sunscreen. the boy is aged 5 and 7 suffered second and third degree burns. they are being treated at a hospital in texas. a picture of their injuries and blisters are just too graphic for television. this is one of the top shared stories on our nbc washington facebook spaj. imagine finding out your former roommate is a serial killer. her daughter posted an ad online saying she needed a roommate. neil falls answered the add.

she's the man who met up with a prosecute earlier this month. that woman ended up killing him in self-defense. falls was later linked to other prosecutes. his former roommate still can't believe. >> my daughter said he was like the creepy uncle. we didn't have a relationship. he just rented a room from me. >> police have linked him to the murders of four escorts in vegas. the woman went missing in 2005. the partially dismembered remains were later found in illinois. a 10 month old baby was found inside this suv in orange county, florida when a repo man came to get the vehicle. the father left the vehicle running with the ac on when he left the baby alone. the baby managed to sleep through the repossession of the vehicle. when the repo man noticed the baby he called police. >> i have been doing this 30 years. i have never found a baby in the backseat of a vehicle.

the military has started the dell kate process of identifying the process of identifying the remains of the u.s.s. oklahoma. five caskets were exhumed yesterday during a solemn ceremony. >> 388 heros from the oklahoma in total will be tested by the end of the summer. >> organizers say they expect to identify the majority of the remains.

>> in the cars in the 1,000 series there is asbestos. right now there are 280 of these railcars running on every line. >> very alarming. >> reporter: the asbestos is located in part of the heating system and metro wouldn't tell us exactly where that was but these systems located at the ends of the cars. a statement was sent saying these 40-year-old vehicles have a small amount of asbestos that is sealed outside the passenger cabin and not accessible. metro has known about the problem and determined that it poses no risk to riders or employees. still there is concern. >> i thought that asbestos was gone everywhere. >> reporter: not in the 1,000 series. >> i will avoid those. >> reporter: the cars have not been running since 2009 that have asbestos controlled. metro can get
