safe if you see a one to start that means it's a 1,000 series car. the oldest cars and the cars carrying asbestos. >> we are looking to see which cars, decide which one to get on. >> right now there are 280 of these railcars running on every line. >> that's very alarming. >> the asbestos is located in part of the heating system. metro wouldn't tell us exactly where that was but these systems are located at the ends of the railcars. metro sent a statement saying these 40-year-old vehicles have a small amown of asbestos that is sealed outside the passenger cabin and not accessible to riders. metro has known about the problem and determined that it

>> wsse expects the road to remain closed through the evening. a couple of dozen customers are without water. the pipe that broke is more than 60 years old. and little river turnpike near the landmark shopping mall in virginia has been shut down for most of the day and it will stay closed through the evening rush. a car took down power poles here. this happened at a major intersection. traffic is being detoured. we will hear from this firefighter who recorded the scene and he pulled a service dog from the flames of this raging fire. >> same

bradley combs was out for a walk when somebody jumped him and beat him so badly that he died days after the attack. we have more on his family's appeal for help. >> reporter: the victim's family gathered in the montgomery village neighborhood where

bradley combs lived asking for information about how he died. >> we just need to know what truly happened. >> the 60-year-old left his townhouse on ridgeline drive for his usual evening walk on june 12. he was beaten and returned home with a shattered jaw and died five days later in the hospital. he was able to tell detectives that a group of 20 young people saw him attack and then left walking in the direction of the montgomery village shopping center. >> the main actor in assaulting mr. combs. >> and somebody in that group should know and be able to identify? >> absolutely. someone has -- knows the person that assaulted him. someone knows why this occurred. we need him to come forward.

his sister is urging witnesses to come forward. >> i just tell them think about if it was somebody that you truly love and that happened to them. how would you feel. >> montgomery county crime solvers is offering a reward for information that leads to an arrest and indictment in this case. calls with tips can be kept confidential. that's the latest live in montgomery village. wendy back to you. a new clue as police search for a man who is behind a hit and run that left a pedestrian hit and injured. reyes was pulling out of a parking lot in leesburg when he hit a man and kept going. this was yesterday around 5:00. a wnz followed that truck and

snapped this picture of that truck. police say reyes had a child in the truck with him. officers found the truck but are still looking for reyes and the victim remains in critical condition. >> heroin deaths continue to sore across the country. the commonwealth saw a 60% increase. there were more heroin deaths in 2014 than in any other year since 2007. one of the areas that has seen a huge explosion in heroin use is norfolk. nancy was specifically assigned to help deal with that problem on capital hill. she talked about the state task force created to address this growing issue. >> the reason i think this task force is working in the plan has been published is that there are so many different aspects. we have pharmacists medical doctors and mental health treatment providers and law enforcement. we have state police local

police sheriffs. >> nancy says heroin and prescription drug abuse also lead to a spike in crime, especially from people stealing money to fuel their habit. the state of maryland also has set up a heroin abuse task force. >> did you feel it today? we actually hit 100 right? >> the heat index. it was triple digit ratings. some folks getting some relief because there are heavy storms coming through the area. the storms bringing some flash flooding as was the case yesterday. of course it's just thunderstorms squeezing on the very humid atmosphere that we have got over our area. those storms actually converging over the same area right around

the county. next couple of hours from west springfield. wood bridge area. very heavy rainmaking its way south with rainfall rates 1 to 2 inches per hour and there have been reports of over two inches. that's why the national weather service issued a flash flood warning. all of the various factors. uncomfortable conditions for exercising with high hud humidity. if you're going to be going out take the big umbrella. when it rains it will rain hard. most of us will be in the low 80s. still very humid. the one thing that the rain has done or we have seen the weed

reporting. the coast guard is now vowing to continue its search for two florida teenagers missing at sea. we have learned that the 14-year-olds were only allowed to take that boat into the river and they should not have been out in the ocean. but the teenagers' mothers say they are experienced enough to survive in this water. >> they are extremely knowledgeable about the water. >> this isn't new to them. these boys have been doing this. it's not even second nature at this point. >> the teens have not been seen since friday when they left to go fishing.

we begin with one community leader calling it unnerving and scarey. >> a spree of armed robberies. in less than an hour three people stargted. news 4 is live in chevy chase to tell us how this all went down. pat? >> imagine you're walking down the street. you're alone. it's dark. a guy comes up with a gun. he wants your cell phone. he wants your wallet. he wants your money. it happened three times in less than an hour. >> he grabbed me like a bear hug from behind and i turn around and he had a very small pistol in one hand. >> she's one of the robbery victims. she asked not to be identified. >> i was pretty aggressive with him and i didn't feel that scared. i felt like mostly like give me

my bag back. >> it appears these gunmen go out in the dark hours of the morning and target people walking by themselves then attack and rob them one by one. >> it happened at this intersection. connecticut and military. 35th. three armed robberies in less than an hour. and people who live around here say they're not accustomed to this kind of street violence. hear now from carolyn cook. >> always a quiet place where people walk safely at night. i can't believe we have had the armed robberies. it's quite scary. >> does this change the way you live? >> i don't think i emotional plea -- don't think i'm going to walk home early or late.

it would change that. >> reporter: now we know of three robberies for sure. but there are other hold ups that could be linked to these gunmen. watch this face. back to you. >> thank you. a dc rabbi sentenced to six and a half years in prison wants his sentence reduced. he was convicted of secretly taping more than 100 women in a ritual bath. he was charged are voyeurism. his lawyer argues that is a misdemeanor and should not carry a sentence of more than a year in prison. this is a story you saw first on news 4. a police station decades in the making is going to sit empty for at least a year. the county executive spoke with our bureau chief who joins us live. >> reporter: he's say heg doesn't like having to do this

any more. he says he understands. he also says he is dealing with the tough cards that he has been dealt. >> we're going to implement the budget that they gave us. >> the councilman is defending his decision. baker says because the county didn't pass, there is no money to staff the station with the 50 officers and seven civilians needed to run it. >> we told him if you pass this budget this is what will happen. these are cuts that you can expect. >> it's an argument that the county council isn't buying. >> it will be built and it would be staffed. >> completely blind sided. we're not happy right now. >> jaywalker says he's especially concerned being up and running.

>> the main concern of the public is what about the safety of the public area? >> prince george county police agrees that mgm is a major concern. >> going to put it at a police department. and that's during the budget meetings. i brought that up. he is experiencing as leaving his department in a hole. >> i have been given an $8.9 million cut in my budget. if that money is put back there is always options. right now i have been given no options. >> reporter: the chief is also saying that the folks who live in that area can expect continued policing as they have been getting it. the county executive is also saying that he expects district 7 to be up and running.

the district is getting another shot at hosting the olympic games. there is renewed excitement for many who think the games could boost our area but there are questions about who would benefit and whether new city council members would be willing to cough up tax dallass. it's a joke. it was not the best city by far. >> this council member has wanted to bring the olympics to the district for years. he is hopeful 2024 may be that year but he's being cautious this time.

>> it is the cross to bear. what are the chances of the district with los angeles? >> the decision to drop boston reinforces the need for a clear selection process. if dc is back to host the summer games there will be opposition. >> council chamber says recent council elections could have an impact. they could be more careful about spending dollars than some preds so sors.

>> the city did sign an agreement. it would fall to taxpayers. >> it's important to look at why is boston pulled out. we need to be mindful of what the cost would be on the city. >> the next move is on the united states olympic committee. the deadline is september 15th. because of that tight deadline it's hard to imagine the usoc going with any city other than dc or los angeles but they could decide not to pick any city at all. >> and los angeles already had it didn't they? >> they have had it twice which is why they are in the front running because the infrastructure is already in place. dc would certainly have to build some. dc says they are prepared to do it. boston got cold feet. they didn't want to sign that

the middle of summer vacation and a big decision from a local school district. montgomery county public schools said they will rearrange the order which schools are renovated or expanded. some will be years earlier and others years later. his kids will be off to college before crews renovate. >> i think about eight years. i started when my older dauz was in third grade. >> the future of the other aging schools is now up in the air. the order in which engaging schools are.

classrooms in dc, maryland and virginia schools. maryland governor is sporting a fabulous new look as he fights cancer. hosted this picture on facebook today and wrote it looks like there is another whitedom in annapolis. i'm losing hair but i'm winning the battle. he was diagnosed with non-hodge kins lymphoma. he says he is feeling strong as he is working through the treatments. right now the county's department of liquor control handles all sales but today the council passed a resolution asking maryland legislature to deregulate some alcohol sales. they want the law changed to allow private businesses to be able to sell thousands of

different special order beer and wine products to restaurants. a day care center was shut down after two boys were severely burned after a trip to a water park. the kids got to play outside all day with no sunscreen. the boys suffered second and third degree burns and had to be hospitalized. the pictures of their injuries by the way. the blisters are too graphic for us to show you. the oklahoma department of human services is investigating as the boys continue to recover. >> a warning to all of us of how important sunscreen really is this time of year. >> right. and we do have more sizzling days coming up. >> lots of vacations ahead. >> exactly. keep it safe for right now. it's all about safety with lightning and heavy rain is coming through.
