for public safety kevin donahue says is happens march 13th. it's the day a paramedic based at the tenleytown station in northwest was not sent help a toddler choking on a grape at a home just three blocks away. instead first responders from elsewhere in the city arrive 11 harrowing minutes later. the 1-year-old boy later died. donahue confirmed information that was widely reported. a software glitch in the fire department's new dispatch system which uses tablet computers meant it failed to recognize the paramedic was at the station. he says there was also human error. he says the supervisor at the fire station, a lieutenant, violated policy by not recognizing the address was close by and alerting dispatchers. he is being sent to a trial board for neglect of duty and incompetence. the department has been criticized for closing proceedings in the heart attack of 47-year-old cecil mills outside a d.c. fire station. >> it's my hope and it's our

intent to have the whole process be transparent. and i hope we can deliver on that as well. >> he is very distraught about the whole thing. >> reporter: ed smith, head of the d.c. firefighters union believes the blame lies solely in the software glitch. >> when you're sitting in the firehouse, the bells and the whistles go off, that's when you jump on a rig and go out the door. if the technology had been working correctly, one could assume the closest unit was being selected properly. >> reporter: also today d.c. mayor muriel bowser will put an additional 10 ambulances on the street every day. live in northwest jackie bensen, news4. back to you. >> thank you, jackie. the federal government is now investigating how the arlington county jail cares for its inmates. they're launching an investigation after a deaf inmate filed a lawsuit earlier are this year. abraham says he spent weeks in the jail before he was provided with the interpreter.

the inmate's lawsuit is being put on hold during this investigation and the jail has defended its treatment of deaf inmates. a lot of you are talking on facebook tonight about a story you saw first on 4. hundreds of metro's oldest railcars are riding around right now with a small amount ofs a best abestos. metro says is it's outside of the cabin and is not accessible to riders there are 280 of the one thousand series cars still running. and the people we talk to say this is something they'll be looking at. >> i'll be looking to see which cars, decide which one to get on. >> i'll be avoiding those as much as possible. >> metro is asking a contractor to remove the it. the passenger, all one thousand series cars will be phased out as new 7,000 series cars are being put into service.

our summer storms are starting to sizzle out for the night. but our heatwave is emboldened and ready to come back strong tomorrow. heat, humidity and those heavy downpours. veronica johnson in the storm center. >> with the latest on our sticky summer pattern. for sure this very long stretch of heat, this wave of heat is continuing. today 94 degrees. and for several hours that heat index reading 101 to 103. this is day five, if you're counting. consecutively of days open for 90 degrees or higher. i'm forecasting several more. in fact, it's going to get worse before it gets better. higher heat, higher humidity right now. 86 degrees your temperature. and yes, the storms have quieted down across the area quite a bit. but, again it is going to be going way up those temperatures and the humidity, even forecasting some strong potentially severe storms. i'll show you where they're going to set up when they're going to set up across our area. and when i think that we're going to finally see this wave

of heat break. >> thanks, veronica. right now, doctors are tending to eight children who were under a tree when it came crash down in california tonight. three of those children are in critical condition right now. the kids were just being released from a summer camp at the kids space children's museum in pasadena. witnesses say the tree made a crack sound before falling. a total of 33 5 to 9-year-olds were at the camp. all have been accounted for. this was supposed to be a lovely weekend for pro golfer and leesburg native billy hurley. playing in the quicken loans national just 25 miles from where he grew up. but tonight he is pleading for anyone to help him find his father. bill hurley packed up, left home nine days ago. no one in the family has seen him since. news4's julie carey live in gainesville tonight with more on the search and why the younger hurley says he still plans to play.

>> reporter: well, it's clear in the video you're about to see that billy hurly is heartbroken with his dad's disappearance. the stage is set for a major tournament to begin on national television on thursday. billy hurly is playing because that's the best way to get the word out he wants his dad home. >> and i'm really coming to you guys. and asking for help. >> reporter: the tears came as soon as pro golfer billy hurley ii started talking about his dad his namesake, bill hurley, missing since july 19th. >> my dad took some clothes got some cash got in his truck and drove away and no one has been heard from him since. he has been gone about nine days, i guess. no one really knows why. >> reporter: inside the hurley family's leesburg home tonight pastors from reston bible church came to pray. the elder hurly is a retired prince william police sergeant

who now works at the church as its mission director. the church's website seeks the prayers of the congregation. billy told reporters it's tough to go public with his dad's disappearance, but the family couldn't pass up the big audience the quicken loans golf coverage could deliver. >> maybe if he goes to golf.com to check my tee time or to check my score and sees this, and understands that dad, we love you, and we want you to come home. >> reporter: hurley's wife of three decades filed a missing person's report monday with leesburg police. they say after hurley left his home on july 19th he used a credit card for gas that same day in woodstock, virginia. police also learned hurley stayed in a hotel in texarkana texas, on july 23rd. billy hurley says even with the family facing such worry, this is why he'll still tee off this week. >> i intend to play this week. in hopes that that somehow brings my dad home.

both have lines in the area that have to be dealt. with workers are trying not to damage them. the road will be closed until the main can be fixed the road resurfaced. right now it looks like that likely won't happen before tomorrow morning's commute. outrage tonight and from some cheers over the nfl upholding the suspension of one of its best known players. the league rejected tom brady's appeal of his four-game suspension over what has become known as deflategate. tonight brady's agent says the whole process was a sham. jason pugh is here now with what happens next in this nfl drama. jason? >> doreen, sham, folly, joke, people on brady's side of this decision they're using those words tonight. his agent and attorney called the decision disappointing but not surprising. here is part of a statement from his attorney. he said, quote, the appeal process was a sham resulting in the commissioner rubber stamping his own decision, end quote, and diminishing the integrity of the

strong reaction tonight to a story you saw first on 4, from prince georges county executive. he says the delayed opening of a $14 million police station is no surprise. baker says he has worked for the past five years to make sure the district 7 station in fort washington was built. he says he warned the county council that the budget they passed wouldn't provide enough money to staff the new station. >> i'm disappointed we are not going to be able to open it. but the thing i can't do since the budget cuts is take police officers from other areas

throughout the county and staff this. that would be unfair to the other districts throughout prince georges county. >> there is concern about the police force being stretched too thin once the mgm casino opens in 2016 if that district 7 station doesn't open. there is a lot of outrage on social media all day and through the night, aimed at a dentist from minnesota over the death of cecil the lion. it remains the top trending story on twitter. cecil is perhaps one of the most revered lions in zimbabwe. well a dentist, walter palmer a dentist from minnesota says he hired professional guides. didn't know cecil was a local favorite, and didn't think he was break anything laws when he shot and killed that lion. local hunting guides apparently lured cecil out of the park where he was protected into an area where dr. palmer could kill him. some reports say palmer paid more than $50,000 to go on this

hunt. palmer has been convicted before of violating hunting laws here in the united states. dozens gathered in florida tonight to pray for the safe return of those two teenagers missing since friday. the coast guard has now searched nearly 31,000 square nautical miles for austin stephanos and perry cohen. and the search area now stretches as far north as charleston south carolina. the coast guard says it will keep searching, but with the boys now missing for 100 hours, the situation is becoming dire. tonight a 911 operator is on administrative leave after hanging up on a caller who was trying to keep a 17-year-old gunshot victim alive. >> he's barely breathing. how many times do i have to [ bleep ] tell you? >> you know what, ma'am? you can deal with this yourself. i'm not going to deal with. >> no my friend is dying. >> you can tell the teen trying to help her friend who was shot at a house party in new mexico.

"the wiz" will air here on december 3rd. who is going to play dorothy? we don't know yet. >> very exciting. a lot of drama this afternoon and up in the skies and out in the parking lot. >> more of that heavy rain. more of the thunderstorms. and that's kind of a story really for much of the rest of the workweek. along with the high heat. so we're going to have to contend with everything. in fact dangerous heat. it's going get very oppressive before the week is over with. in terms of radar, storm team 4 radar very quiet compared to where we were earlier this afternoon from about 3:00 p.m. up until about 8:30 to 9:00 p.m. this evening. storms were blowing up. and where i think they're going to fire tomorrow is much in those same locations. south of 66, down areas of i-95, and just east of i-81. that's where the storms are likely to fire tomorrow. but more widespread storms coming our way on thursday. i'll show you that in just a moment. look at the visibilities out there right now. getting close to two miles in

fredericksburg. culpeper, down to four miles. the areas that had the rain today, that's where our fog is really going to set up for early tomorrow morning. the best locations. fog for early on, between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. your temperature 78 degrees. a very warm start and a sticky one too. 83 degrees by 10:00 a.m. the fog burns off. get out there early and exercise. 88 your temperature at 8:00 a.m. it's always going to start feeling like we're over the 90 degree mark. the high humidity yeah just like today will allow values, the heat index values to top out over 100 degrees. the weather having a moderate impact on our day tomorrow along with the heavy storms, the slow-moving storms that will come our way starting after 3:00. this is tomorrow. this is 30% chance for the afternoon and through the early evening hours. meanwhile on thursday, this is 9:00 a.m. watch the storms coming in. this is 2:00. strong potentially severe storms up until about 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. on thursday. i think we'll really are going to have to watch for flash

flooding on thursday. more widespread as well as the possibility of some high winds coming through with the storms. and maybe even some hail. and because of that, thursday is a weather alert day for us. the high heat, the high humidity, dangerous heat and stormy conditions for the afternoon and the early evening hours. meteorologist tom curran will have the very latest data coming in on that. for friday we drop to 93. we take a look at, this guys. we'll see and feel less humidity in the air at the end of the week. and through the weekend. your temperatures in the 90s. now tuesday still 93. but i do think that by midweek the end of next week, that's when we could see the heat start to break. our longest stretch of back-to-back 90-degree days. 17 days in a row in 1980. that was from the end of july until the mid part of august. we're not going to have that. >> is that supposed to make us feel better? >> we're not going have that. but i do think we'll start to see the pattern change midweek. >> okay. we look forward to that. the nats add an all star to
