new this morning, police saying an officer shot his gun during a struggle with a suspect. it happened on walker mill road in capital heights. around 11:00 p.m., an officer heard a car crash, went out to check it out. when he arrived, a man was running from the scene. according to police, the man tried to take the officers gun. the suspect was shot during the struggle and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. right now, police are looking for whoever shot a man early this morning and left him for dead in northwest d.c. police tell news 4, the man died just after 1:00 this morning. derrick ward joining us now live. derrick? >> reporter: good morning. we are in the 1500 block of first street northwest. you can take a look now. it is just starting to wrap up. under the light of day, investigators are looking at the crime scene. the shooting happened around 1:00 a.m. this morning. an adult male shot three times.

that person died on the scene. as you can see now, this is the grizzly aftermath where a fire truck comes and is washing up the blood. police responded to a robbery in the 1100 block. that was two to three hours after that. there's no indication the two may be related. in that instance, they are looking for six people, three females an three males. no lookouts regarding this shooting. we don't have an identity of the victim. people said they didn't hear anything. there was a crowd of people at the time it happened. it's unusual. they are still out there checking out the scene. probably looking for shell casings or evidence as they are about to reopen this block of 15th street. if you take this road, it has been closed since 1:00 this

morning. again, it will be reopened soon. as the investigation continues, this fatal shooting in northwest. we are live. derrick ward. a man stabbed another man to death along the h street corridor will be in court today. we first told you about 57-year-old hector felix's arrest last night. he got into an argument with smith and attacked him on monday. witnesses say they tried to save smith, but he died at the hospital. breaking news to tell you about. another survivor is out of a chinese warehouse that exploded wednesday. first responders pulled a firefighter from the debris. they say he was trapped for more than 32 hours. there's a new order this morning for a massive evacuation of the area around the blast. officials confirm the presence of potentially dangerous chemicals in the area this morning. at least 85 people died in a

series of explosions at the plant including 21 firefighters. more than 720 people are hurt. if your child goes to the university of virginia, they may notice their e-mail is down this weekend. the school's i.t. department is doing a security upgrade after hackers targeted the university. uva says federal investigators tipped them off to the attack and said it originated in china. the university tells us no personal information was taken. a nitty gritty diplomacy battle will pick up between cuba and the united states. this morning, there's a symbol of hope in savannah. the american flag flying for the first time in 54 years. secretary of state, john kerry says the u.s. wants money for american property that was seized when castro took over. they want compensation for damages caused by the american embargo.

this. new this morning, a rescue from a burning passenger ferry. this is in the philippines. look at that fire on board. you can see people trying to get off the ship. 500 people on board. you see them there at the top. one of them climbing down to save his own life. all of them, somehow, all these 500 people made it off the ferry safely. the coast guard looking into what exactly started the fire. >> wow, incredible. first responders can fill a number of roles. sounds like a good idea. there's an argument in alexandria about how to achieve that. they want firefighters to get more training in advanced life support and skills to save people in crisis. the president of a group representing paramics says it will waste money and make the quality of service worse. >> they are sole service medics

"the washington post" shows court documents show a 14-year-old handed the 7-year-old a bag with the .9 millimeters handgun in there. university of maryland says the assistant women's basketball coach resigned following sexual abuse charges. the head coach released a statement saying it's best he look into his personal matters.
