to show off its new railcar bus another problem leaves the transit agency embarrassed. his real name was lenny robinson, but a lot of folks here knew him by his alter ego, batman. >> all afternoon, we have seen condolences coming in on our facebook pages, twitter pages, for a man who worked to bring so much cheer to sick kids in our area. >> he died in an accident over the weekend and news4's pat collins has been following up on his story. >> reporter: our batman is dead. not the batman in the movies, not the batman on television, but lenny robinson, our batman. and he had his own special power. he spent two deck kids a dressing up as batman, driving a specially made batmobile, cheering up hundreds of sick kids in hospitals. lenny robinson, our batman, killed in a bizarre accident as

he was run over by the bat car when it was struck on a highway near hagerstown. police say the batmobile broke down, he went out to checked engine and the bat car was hit. lenny robinson had a successful cleaning business. he sold it years ago so he could be batman and visit sick children. not long ago, i saw him work his imagine knick a hospital outside of baltimore. >> do batman a favor, get better. and to the media thought and to the world, you must ask yourself, self, did i make a difference today? and that answer better be yes. >> reporter: he was on his way to another hospital one time when he was pulled over by the cops who trouble running the bat tags. >> got no tags, batman on it and dressed like batman. >> reporter: it was an odd encounter, but in the end, it

was all good. now, lenny robinson put thousands and thousands of miles on that special batmobile going from hospital to hospital visiting sick children. an inside look at his special powers coming up at 5:00. this was a shocking homicide and robbery. folks will remember what used to be the clarion hotel in oxon hill and the night that a gunman went into the hotel and held a gun to the clerk's face and then shot and killed another worker. today, we heard opening arguments in this case. deon dre wheels is accused of being the gunman in that robbery and murder. he is charged with murder, armed robbery, assault and use of a handgun in the commission of a crime and conspiracy to commit robbery. this all happened back in october of 2013. 27-year-old jesse chavez, who was a manager at the clarion hotel, was shot and killed when he tried to stop the gunman on his way out of the hotel. they struggled until that gunman

shot and killed him at point-blank range. today the jury was selected in this case and we heard opening arguments. on news4 at 5:00, a look back at this unbelievable crime and just how violent it was what surveillance video caught. in upper marlboro, i'm tracee wilkins, news4 we have been going through court documents released on that stabbing in northeast d.c. last week. the man killed, eric smith, play is mistakenly, accidentally, knocked a little girl with his bag as he was getting off a bus on h street. witnesses say smith got into an argument with the girl's mother and then got into a fight with another man who was trying to break the two up. police say that's when hector felix moved in with a knife. court documents say smith tried to get away but was hit by a car on 8th street and police say that's when felix stabbed smith. felix is charged with murder and he is -- has been denied bond.

back to you. >> thanks, wendy. about 40 people walked from baltimore to washington today as a show of force against street violence. they are part of the 300 men march organization and chopper4 caught up with them this morning along route 1 in college park. they just arrived at the national mall a few hours ago. organizers hope their march calls attention to the rising violence in baltimore. we continue to get new images from that deadly bomb explosion in thailand's capital, including this video that just came into our newsroom showing the flames raging outside a shrine in bangkok. no group has claimed responsibility for the bombing yet. at least 18 people are dead. nbc's janet shamlian reports on the deadliest attack in the city's recent memory. >> reporter: the bomb rocked thailand's capital during the height of the evening rush hour, 7 p.m. local time. the attack taking place at a major intersection close to the well-known erawan shrine in the center of the city and this may have been the result of a motorcycle bomb. the area is close to a number of

the white house is ready to help our area in the fight against heroin addiction. the obama administration just announced a $5 million initiative in 15 states, including maryland and the district. halved money is going to be used to pair up police and health officials so they can focus on treating heroin users, not just punishing them. from 2002 to 2013, the number of people who died from heroin overdoses quadrupled in the united states. now to a sobering new study about military kids. it suggests children from military families are more likely to engage in risky behaviors during war time the leading medical journal published the results which found these kids are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, get in fights or bring a gun to school. researchers say being separated from a parent or worried about

we just learned a data breach at the irs is impacting more people than we first thought. theism rs now says hackers stole the personal information of an additional 220,000 people. that means the total number of victims is up to about 334,000. we first learned about the data breach in may. the irs says hackers used stolen personal data to access a computer program that shows tax returns. the agency will begin mailing letters to potential victims and will offer free credit

monitoring. summer's already over for some kids in our area. students went back to class today in five school districts and that seems early to you, it is. news4's molette green went to manassas park's hoover elementary to get the inside scoop on a new schedule. >> i need individual pictures. >> reporter: anxious moments on the first day back to class. >> i'm nervous. >> reporter: arianna groves is starting fifth grade and her brother, christian, first grade. arriving early outside cougar elementary and manassas park elementary right next door to get started on a new school year starting three weeks early. >> i think it will be better for the students because the longer breaks tend to you know, tend to kind of knock them off a little bit. >> 'cause some kids usually forget most of the stuff during summer break. >> reporter: that's the focus this school year in all manassas park schools, to raise achievement and close a gap for some students who may lag behind. that's the cornerstone of this

his step granddaughter. >> yeah, she was stabbed to death and her boyfriend is now facing second-degree murder charges. "access hollywood's" billy bush joins us live from burbank. more than anything else, this is a family tragedy s freeman saying anything about this? >> he put out a statement, you know, a 'dena met her on 2005 on the golden globe red carpet so proud of her, she was going to be a huge star, she was in the movie last year "five flights up" with morgan and diane keaton as well. he put out a statement saying the world will never know her artistry and talent and how much she had to offer. her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person, but she was stabbed multiple times out on the street outside of her apartment. neighbors say they called 911 after hearing screams out there. some witnesses describe the attack as an exorcism attempt. she was transported to a local hospital and later this guy,

wifi. all right. we want to jump in now with some breaking news. want to take you live to d.c. police headquarters, the mayer and police chief are updating the shooting of a recent american university graduate. this is chief cathy lanier. >> i'm going to try to walk you through the -- what we put together. this is video from several different places. i will try and describe where the video is from and what it's connected to and what exactly we are looking for. so, i will start off. this is -- all the video we are going to show you here in this case is related to the saturday afternoon homicide of 23-year-old matthew shlonsky. on saturday, matththew shall lo ski was walking on 7th street, area of 7th and s street northwest, the area of 7th and s street northwest. he was walking with friends. evidence was recovered from both the southwest and the southeast

sidewalk on the corners of 7th and s street that shows that guns were being fired from both of those locations. so, both the southeast and southwest corners of 7th and s street, we believe that two individuals firing from two different locations there. a burgundy chrysler 300 with maryland registration was observed fleeing from that area shortly after the shots were fired. it is unknown whether the occupant or occupants of that car, that burgundy 300 also fired shots tilt. mr. shlonsky died as a result of his gunshot wounds sustained in this shooting and we don't believe at this time that he was the intended target of that shooting. after the shooting of mr. shlonsky, we received reports that the occupants of the burgundy 300 then had interactions with several other individuals. at 6th and s street northwest,

the burgundy 300 was observed operating on the wrong side of the street. the driver of the burgundy 300 then exchanged words with the driver of another car and pointed a handgun at the driver of that other car before speeding away. theburgen 2k3i 00 was then observed again in the 1900 block of 4th street northwest. an individual observed the vehicle driving at a high rate of speed. there was some words exchanged between that person and the driver of the burgundy 300. and it was reported that the driver of the burgundy 300 then rolled down the window and fired multiple shots at that individual. the driver of the burgundy 300 was described as black male in his 20s, dark complexion, with dread locks or twists in his hair. we have since recovered thatburgen 2k3i 00 in northeast washington. we do know that that car was stolen in a burglary in bowie, maryland, on august 11th.

as a dark-colored vehicle. >> where is this street? >> so this is -- this initial video here, the subjects of interest, what you are looking at now this is video from a burglary that occurred on august 12th, 2015 in the 4200 block of argyle terrace. you will see three individuals in this video. we believe the three people in this video may have been occupants of that burgundy chrysler 300 that was on the scene of the homicide of saturday. so, we are asking for anybody who might recognize the three individuals that you see in this video, as these are persons of interest four through six and the vehicle's identified as -- i'm sorry, these are persons of interest one through three and this is vehicle number one, vehicle of interest number one in our video.

there are suspects one through three. there will be still shots shown at the end of, this the better quality is in the video. the second part of the video, this is showing our second vehicle of interest that's there, captured in this segment. and this is also showing two more persons of interest, persons four through six and vehicle of interest number two. this is from the shooting scene on saturday down in the area of 7th and s street northwest. so again there are still shots that are added on but from the video, a little bit better clarity of the persons in that segment of the video. so in total, we have six personses of interest and two vehicles, even though we have recovered the 300 -- the chrysler 300, we wanted to put that video out there in case somebody may have seen this vehicle being operated any time
