to. so our police are very actively they are doing really good police work. what the chief didn't mention about the uzi that was recovered, that's because an officer noticed a lookout on a vehicle, saw that it had bullet holes in it. they went to the house where that person was associated. the adult there gave them permission to conduct a search and that's how they took a uzi off the streets of the district of columbia. our police are doing really good police work. we have had meetings with our prosecutors and representatives of the bench to make sure they understand exactly what we are dealing with as well. we want everyone to is able to follow the law to have great life here in the district of columbia. if you are not going to follow the law, you are going to put people in harm's way. we want the full weight of the law to be visited on every case.

>> so again what we learned here today was that matt shlonsky was caught in a shootout, people shooting from opposite sides of the street, 7th and s that burgundy chrysler that sped away from the scene, got into it with another driver on 6th street. someone in the car pointed a gun at that driver. they rode a couple blocks down on 4th street, not only got into it with a third driver but also fired shots from that buttendy car at the time. so, again, we are gonna continue to follow this story and push out any alerts on our nbc washington app. wendy? of course, no one is immune to-to-these violent crimes unfolding in d.c. a local deejay was stabbed multiple names du pont circle, even after he gave his wallet to his assailant. mark segraves is live with how this attack happened. mark? >> reporter: he is known as dj nestor and he is popular in local night club and on the radio here in d.c.

after he was attacked leaving this club in dupont circle, his friend, colleagues and people in this neighborhood are concerned it could happen to them next. today on the radio the deejays were telling listeners what happened to their friend and colleague. dj nestor, as he was known. >> immediately, you think that happened to him it could happen to me. >> reporter: nester is a part time deejay and he mixes music at local night club. he has already developed a loyal following at a very young age. >> nestor is the kid, the new counted block that we all think is the greatest new talent. >> reporter: nestor was leaving this club in du pont circle on thursday when a man put a knife to his throat as he got into his car and he demanded his money. even after giving the suspect his wallet, the man stabbed nestor repeatedly in the head, face and neck. >> he says that he got blind right away, couldn't see, but he

raised his hands and he got stabbed six more times, which is amazing. we don't understand how -- what kind of madness took place in the moment. >> reporter: the attack comes as violent crime in the district is on the rise, with two more murders over the weekend, bringing this year's total to 93 homicides. a 23% jump from last year. armed robberies 1u7 7% and assaults with guns are up 16%. the shaw neighborhood in northwest has seen much of the violence, including a shooting that left an american university graduate dead. increased patrols seeing most of the violence but few neighborhoods have been immune from the growing problem. alex has lived in the shauz community for years. >> other than flooding the streets with mpd officers the way we have this past weekend which obviously we can't sustain, no one has come up with a solution. >> reporter: i got off the phone with dj nestor, he is recovering

but he is weak because he lost so much blood in that attack. he doesn't know when he will get back to work. his friends started a gofundme page for the father of two, who like many in his sbrirks no health insurance if you want to help out go to the nbc washington app and search never. at 6:00, you will hear more from the mayor about what is being done to stem the violence. chris, back to you. >> all hoping he recovers. man was getting off a crowded bus in d.c. when he bumped into a child and apparently that was enough to lead to a deadly standing in the middle of h street. the man killed, eric smith, may have mistakenly, accidentally, knocked a little girl with his bag as he was getting off a bus on h street. witnesses say smith got into an argument with the girl's mother and then got into a fight with another man who was trying to break the two up. police say that's when hector felix moved in with a knife. court documents say smith tried to get away but was hit by a car on 8th street and police say that's when felix stabbed smith. felix is charged with murder and has been denied bond. we have the sudden death of

a man who spent much of his recent life trying to cheer up sick children in our area. people knew him as lenny robinson, his name, but better known as batman, the alterego he takes on at the hospitals throughout our region. we are hearing from those who work with him and news4's pat sconce live in georgetown with his story and his passing. pat? >> reporter: wendy, he would go around to hospitals throughout our area to make sick children smile. lenny robinson, he dressed like batman, he talked like batman, he drove a bat momobile and las night killed in a tragic accident. we begin our story with one of his partners in good. >> we lost batman. that's what we lost. and a true hero. >> reporter: when she heard the news today, laurie strongen put on her batman medallion. it was a gift from lenny robinson. you see, laurie and lenny were

partners in good. lori runs a foundation that arranges for superheroes to meet sick kids and lenny, lenny was batman. no, he wasn't the movie batman or the tv batman. he was our batman. you see, years ago, he sold his cleaning business, made a fortune and decided to become batman and make sick kids happy. >> he would electrify the room. like it lilt up. and kids would run to him and he would open up his big cape and the kids would gather underneath it, like he protected them. there was something healing about his presence. >> reporter: last night, batman died in a bizarre accident when police say he was run over by his batmobile after it was struck by another car on a highway near hagerstown. the bat car had broken down. batman was outside checking the engine when it all happened.

have seen in the month of august. the rest of this evening looking pretty good. i think we have temperatures that fall down to the upper 80s by 9:00, low 80s in the city by 11:00, most of you into the upper 70s by this point. coming up, talk much more about the end of this heat wave, the chance of rain goes way up the next few days. i will show you when in my forecast. an 85-year-old woman hurt in a crash in fairfax has died. we have learn herd name is nancy shade. her car collided with a van yesterday near george mason university while she was driving on braddock road about 2 in the afternoon. that van drove in front of her trying to turn on to roberts road. shea died at the hospital. the man driving the van was not hurt. no charges have been filed but police are hoping to talk to people who play is witnessed this crash. metro launched a new train today, but that wasn't nearly enough to stop the growing frustration from a lot of commuters. the first 7,000 series cars debut on the green line today but just as the new train was about to pull up to the greenbelt station this morning,

an older train in front of it broke down. it happened around 5:30. the older train had some mechanical problem, metro pulled it out of service but this issue forced riders to wait about half an hour for the next train and that got a lot of people angry, especially those who depend on metro to get to work. >> this is ridiculous! i have a job to be at! this is crazy! >> i have been through breakdowns, single-tracking, i have been through the derailment this month, just pathetic. >> the silver lines next to get the 7,000 series trains but metro hasn't said when that will happen. people in fairfax dealt with a second dive nightmares stemming from a broken water pipe. crews worked all day to fix two big sinkholes in annandale. chopper4 flying over the scene. this is miss ann lane and duncan drive, south of tollhouse road. the water main break flooded

>> reporter: you are looking at the altar being built for pope francis in this cabinet shop in frederick, maryland. the altar will be used when the pontiff celebrates an outdoor mass at the basilica of the national shrine of the emaccue late conception next month. the altar, chairs and furnishings were designed beneath there students from catholic university of america. they are seeing their designs come to life after winning a contest. >> for the pope to give mass and to canonize a saint with -- standing behind the altar that i designed, sitting in the chair that i designed, i mean, it's just such an hopper to be part of such an important event. >> reporter: the students tell me that their design concept was simple, reflect the nature from inside the basilica, outside from the mass and because the altar will be installed inside the church, they want it to serve a dual purpose. a deacon is also a professional carpenter, the second time he

welcome back. we hit 90 on saturday. 94 yesterday on your sunday. today, high temperature of 95 degrees. we have gone up each day. i don't think that will be the case as we head into the day tomorrow though. outside right now it is on the hot side, 93, plenty of sunshine. look that the dew point. any time that gets at or above 70, it is fairly uncomfortable outside. look at the heat index, 99, d.c., 98, leesburg, 97 over toward frederick, maryland. hot, hazy and humid, the three hs in full affect as we make our way out and about on monday. what sells in full effect? storms here toward baltimore. we have had one shower that just developed here, southwestern portions of montgomery county, right across the potomac from louden county, just to the south of poolesville, maybe encountering some heavy rain there with that one. again, very small shower, really not affecting too many people. once again, just to the south of poolesville, zoom in again, show you this, right to the west of sugar land. if you know this, out toward

river road, river road comes to an end and you keep going a couple of different ways, out toward some of the farms out there. seeing some of that rain as you look out that way. now, not much else going on, d.c. down to boston, almost all clear skies for the most part, the exception of those few showers, but notice back to the west, we have got a lot of moisture moving our way and that is going to be the case tomorrow and that's why i think tomorrow will stay beneath there 90-degree mark. take a look at future weather. this is the latest run of this computer model, different than the one wes looked at earlier, 8 a.m., no problems tomorrow morning, not anticipating any shower activity on your tuesday morning. tuesday morning rush, no problem. tomorrow afternoon, the clouds move in, isolate showered here, but i still think we are on the dry side. but this is something to watch here. here's 4:00. once again, this is the latest computer model bringing in some storms between the 4, 5, 6:00 hour tomorrow evening. i still think most of us will be dry, haven't put it in the forecast just yet. i am going to continue to wait and see about this. looking at the next couple of days, keep the umbrella handy, see the chances of rain,

now at 5:30, breaking news involving the murder of a recent american university graduate. d.c. police releasing new surveillance video of three persons of interest in connection with the murder of matt shlonsky. the 23-year-old was shot and killed saturday afternoon near the shaw metro. >> the chief and mayor just wrapped up their news conference and jackie bensen is live at police headquarters. what did they say, jackie? >> reporter: chris, i can tell you that the police chief in one of the most detailed press conferences she has given in a while, laid out an incredible scenario that led to the death of matt shlonsky. two groups of young men essentially with callous disregard for anybody who was around them have a disagreement that goes to guns. they are shooting each other. shlonsky gets caught in the gunfire. they proceed away from there and

pull a gun again on people as they are trying to get away. the car that you saw that red charger was stolen from prince george's county on august 11th. august 11th and august 12th. it was used in burglaries. so, police believe some of the pictures, taken during the burglaries, these are the same men involved in seats shooting. this is a little bit of what chief lanier have to same >> the people who know the individuals involved in this, they have to come forward. that neighborhood today. it is somebody else's neighborhood tomorrow t is that person's child today and somebody else's child tomorrow. >> reporter: again, police are looking into the possibility that the disagreement between these two groups right in one of the most popular going out spots in the d.c. area was because of -- may have been wimauma because of an illegal craps game and chief lanier put out the plea, if you see people doing this, if you know people who are doing this, we have had a

tremendous problem with violence concerning these illegal craps games this year. she said call the police and report them. >> jackie vincent, thank you. a hotel worker killed during a violent robbery was simply co-worker who had a gun at her head. now, his family is hoping to get justice in court. >> prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins has been watching the trial for us and she picks up with the latest. >> he would be santa claus for children. woe go to schools and be santa claus for them. >> reporter: 27-year-old jesse chavez was a hero in his community, in his home and in his death. >> he was at the door between the suspect and the suspect being able to get outside to the vehicle. >> reporter: in 2013, chavez worked as a manager at what was the clarion hotel in oxon hill. october 21st he came between an armed robber and his get awake fighting gunman until chavez was shot and killed at point blank

rang. surveillance video before the shooting shows the armed gunman jump over the hotel counter pointing his gun at a pregnant worker, demanding money. today in court, the testified, the gunman said shut up two times, grab herd hair, pointed a gun at her pregnant belly and demanded money from the cash drawer. police say that is deandre weems, the same gunman who would kill chavez minutes later. police released the video of the suspect's vehicle as they searched for weems and his two co-conspirer tos, williams, the get away driver and washington, believed to be the lookout. weems is charged with murder, arounded robbery, assault, use of a handgun in the commission of a crime and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. the jury was allowed to go home today. they have been told not to look at any news programs or follow up any information on what happened with this story, what happened with the case. coming up on news4 at 6:00, the defense is saying that the state's attorney's office may

have overcharged this young man. they have a defense that they believe is going to get him off. we will have that report coming up live. reporting live in upper marlboro, i'm tracee wilkins, back to you in the studio. >> thanks. what started as an argument apparently lead lead to a deadly shooting outside a busy rec center filled with parents and kids over the weekend. someone shot and killed jr franklin outside the bradbury rec center in suitland. prince george's county police say franklin got into an argument with a group of people in the parking lot before the shooting started. version have talked to a number of witnesses but they are putting a reward out there, $25,000 for information that helps them arrest the killer. and police in fairfax county also need the public's help finding the person who's been firing shots into office buildings. this happened at four different locations within a mile of each other in the herndon area off the dulles toll road. the shootings took place in late july and early august. northern virginia bureau chief, julie carey, will be telling us what else these incidents have in common. she is coming up on news4 at

6:00. dan snyder says even a new stadium isn't enough to make him change the name of washington's football team. and today, we are hearing from team president bruce allen on the matter. he has been in talks with leaders in the district, maryland and virginia about a new stadium and he was asked point blank about the name controversy. >> you feel strongly that d.c. is the most appropriate home and the team name proves a political barrier. would a reconsideration of the team name be part of your thinking? >> no. >> and there you have it the redskins wrapping up training camp down in richmond today. for more on that, here is carol maloney. >> reporter: a 4-12 record, the main culprit for dipping fan interest in training camp, but this morning was about the people who don't care about numbers and who work on the other side of these ropes. >> as the team goes, the fans

the university of virginia has its computer network back online after a cyber attack shut it down for the past two days. federal investigators think that the hack originated in china and targeted the e-mail accounts of two uva employees. the school says it has made some security upgrades guard against any further computer breaches. oh, the bells rang bright

and early. three weeks early today for you kids in manassas park. the city started its school year three weeks early as a part of an effort to raise achievement. it is being called a balanced calendar. with the early start, the schools will have two week-long intercessions that will allow the students to catch up or take a special course. parents say it's a good thing and even some of the kids agree. >> some kids usually forget most of the stuff during summer break, so, maybe if we have, like, a kind of shorter summer break then we could probably remember more of the stuff that we learned. >> this year's early start does not mean an early finish. manassas park says its school is still gonna end in mid-june. over in the district, there's a big change that could save students and families a a lot of money this year. mayor muriel bowser announced changes to the kids ride free program. it offers free bus rides during school commuting hours and this year, for the first time, rides
