died saturday. police believe he was an innocent victim and released this video to get witnesses to come forward as they search for six persons of interest in the case. >> it doesn't seem like there's enough police out there that's really helping anything. >> there's probably more they can be doing but they're working with limited resources right now. >> reporter: and at this hour, no word on suspects. some hard proof of this up tick in violence all across the city, d.c. police released the numbers on its count of homicides this year. right now the number stands at 94. last year at this time there were 72 murders in the city. in northeast d.c., molette green, news 4. right now partly sunny in the metro area. temperatures are near 80 degrees and quite humid. and the storm team 4 radar showing us a line of rain showers. no lightning with this. now coming into the pands of

thai officials say a man flu a small explosive from a bridge into the water. it landed in the river and no one was injured. police say the explosion at the shrine was caused by a pipe bomb. developing this morning, a former fairfax county police officer is in jail on murder charges. a grand jury caused hip in the death of john gear. he was on the job when he shot and killed gear two years ago. he said gear was reaching for a gun. other officers disputed that account. or ttorez was fired from the po department. prince william county police say a man who charged at an officer should recover. they went for a domestic disturbance between a mother and her son. the son kicame at the officer wh

a knife. the mother and the son are in the hospital. the mother's injuries are not related to the shooting. >> the onslaught of presidential candidates continues at the iowa state fair. john kasich will take questions today. take a look here. a new cnn poll just this morning shows trump firmly in the lead among republicans. he's polling at 24 %. up six points from july. former florida governor is a fairly distant second place. rubio is 40. and kasich is not in the top five. hillary clinton's campaign is still dogged by the ongoing e-mail scandal. about 5% of the e-mails the state has sifted through, the revelation came after clinton said in an iowa radio interview she never sent or received any

right now a big problem in the town of leesburg. threatening dozens of homes. >> a sink hole opened up over the weekend. we explain what's next. >> reporter: crews have been trying to stabilize this sink hole, and they've actually gotten in there and expanded it so they could get to the utilities that were damaged beneath the ground, but they're not out of the woods yesterday. leesburg new problem is open earth. residents first noticed the ground sinking in the morning and a few hours after they moved their cars, chasms and cracks opened up. >> everyone is saying this is the biggest one they've seen here. >> it's weird. i've never seen nothing like this happen before. >> reporter: it would eventually expose underground utilities. it could be a sign of more openings. >> the challenge is to know how

big the sink hole is and how large, how far the underground cavities expand. >> reporter: engineers will be here to probe that question. the culprit could be limestone. it may be eroding resident's faith in the ground beneath their feet. >> i'm worried about everything. it's all farmland right here. >> water and suer service has been restored to the homes that lost it but they may lose it while they make a fix to the utilities. in leesburg, news 4. new today. right now a teenager and a preteen facing car theft charges in annapolis. they are only 12 and 14 years old. here's what police say happened. about 9:15 last night, police resp respr responded to reports of a 12-year-old driving. later that night the car owner called police when her car was missing. she was only a few blocks away.

she left the key in the glove box and the car unlocked. the mother of a murdered total manager could testify today. police say a man tried to rob a clarion hotel. the manager tried to stop him and was shot in the chest. the fda will soon be making a final decision about the little pink pill some call the female viagra. take a look at this. it works in the brain to increase a woman's desire to have sex. viagra affects the ability to have sex. the fda rejected the pill twice since 2011. the side affects are low pleasure a blood pressure and fainting.

>> reporter: closing arguments are happening right now in the case of a north carolina police officer. officer randall kerric faces voluntary manslaughter charges. prosecutors say officer kerric didn't need to kill jonathan ferrell. the officer's attorney said he feared for his life when responding to a breaking and entering call. >> we now know when they'll talk about the derailment issue. the track problem that caused it went unfixed for a month after it was first found. the metro board should receive a report into what happened next week. the board will meet september 3rd to figure out what's next including whether anyone will lose their job. >> a warning. we are about to show you some alarming video. a yankee's player recovering

>> breaking news in the news room. the news 4 i team has learned a former federal law enforcement official, a high ranking law enforcement official has been charged with a felony for attempting to make meth mien. he is a former security official at this facility. according to our team, he has been charged with a felony for something done july 18th. that's the same day police respoer responded to a miniature explosion. an explosion they linked to meth making. the in a response they said the employee, christopher bartly no longer worked for them and they are fully supporting the joongog

investigation. back to you. >> thank you. >> new details about the massive irs data breach. >> it looks like it's worse than originally reported. hackers stole records from three times the number initially thought. 334,000 people are potentially victims. it thinks the hackers will try to use the data to collect tax refunds next year. the irs will notify people and try to offer protections. a father is facing murder charges for the death of his five-week old son. he was arrested yesterday. news 4 cameras were there earlier this month when police responded. the call was for an unconscious baby. at the time they said the death was suspicious. it says the infant died from blunt force injuries.

peaking out near 90 degrees by later this afternoon. beautiful day around the bay. low 80s there. sticky humidity and getting more humid, oppressive humidity into wednesday and thursday with an increasing chance of mainly afternoon storms. >> thunderstorms in china are complicated recovery efforts from last week's deadly warehouse explosion. teams specializing in handling hazards chemicals are there. when it exploded last week, at least 114 people died. the cause is still under investigation. we're told at least one person who works for the company that owned that warehouse has been arrested. >> you may be able to help loudoun county animal services find out who abandoned this dog, the female pit bull type dog was left at a hotel earlier this month. she was found tied to a tree.

animal services says she may have been there for several days. if you have any information, loudoun county could like to hear from you. police officers in seattle pulled over a car. when the driver opened the door, officers got a pretty big surprise. >> i'm in labor. my baby is headed out. >> yeah. the man's wife was in labor. you can hear her screaming in pain there. the officers called for an balance. there wasn't enough time. three officers ended up giving that baby there on the side of the road. the baby girl was struggling to breathe but officers were able to clear her airway. mom, baby, and dad all doing well this morning. >> here at the live desk, just in, new york city mayor, signed a bill requiring testing and inspections of building cooling

towers. it's part of an effort to to try to prevent legionnaire's disease. >> as we speak, there are city workers on the ground identifying every situationl cooling tower in this tower, working, of course, with building owners and managers, working with real estate organizations, community leaders, elected officials, et cetera. >> governor andrew cuomo made the announcement on monday following the outbreak in new york city that killed 12 people. legionnaire's is a type of pneumonia that can be extremely dangerous to the elderly and people with underlying health issues. no new cases have been reported since august 3rd in the city. >> more of us are flying out of town this labor day. u.s. airlines expected to carry 14.2 million passengers worldwide from wednesday, september 2nd through tuesday

shootings in d.c. a person was shot around 11:30 last night in southeast d.c. about a half hour later, more shots were fired in northeast along florida avenue. this was just hours after the d.c. police chief plead for the people to come forward with tips on unsolved murders. >> crews are the at a sink hole. a massive sink hole. 65 homes lost water when the ground started to give away on sunday on current terrace, not far from route 15. engineers are out to see what's causing the problem. and right now, the florida senator, and marco rubio taking questions at the iowa state fair. >> donald trump is at 24 in this poll.

virginia and over part frederick and maybe even into montgomery county in another several hours. it'll take a while to move in. initially just showers coming through. good forhe afternoon commute. maybe a brief caution for the overnight and tomorrow morning. and warm temperatures up near 90 by around 4:00. that's when we have the chance in the metro area of a passing thundershower, likely not a severe storm. then this evening, still very humid. temperatures in the low 80s by 7:00 p.m. and partly sunny. a greater chance of storms tomorrow and on thursday. ? >> tom, thank you. right now at least three major wildfires burning in northern california. these fires were sparked by lightning. the rugged terrain part of the reason it's tough to reach the flames. they're massive and the u.s. forest service says it could be october before the fires are fully contained. >> on none of the incidents are we using a strategy that counts on an el niño event.

these are in rugged places. >> one of the worst fires burning right now is in washington state. nbc lee ann greg shows us the damage. >> reporter: close to 3,000 people remain you should an evacuation order even though progress was made yesterday in part because of high humidity and lower winds. the fire grew. now it's up to more than 65,000 acres. up from 56,000 in the previous count. there's concern especially about the northwest edge of the fire because now it's moving within six to eight miles from the town of mansen. the account for destroyed homes is up to 40 and it's expected to rise possibly up to 75 businesses and homes destroyed in this area. 200 active duty military personnel will be joining this fight for the first time in close to a decade. they will be trained beginning tomorrow and will be sent to various fires across the west.
