>> chief says that this was a classic example of type of violence that is going on throughout the city. we had a dispute between two teenagers 12 and 17 years old. in this case police believe the 17-year-old went and got a gun, an illegal gun. he came back to the 12-year-old neighbor's house. there was a shooting. by the time it was over, the 12-year-old's mother was very critically injured. the 17-year-old is injured, the 17-year-old is injured. the police chief was here talking about how the common theme we have seen is illegal guns. >> a lot of the guns are stolen. a lot of them have serial numbers obliterated and have high capacity magazines as we have discussed before.

calm and trust in god and a statue of jesus christ. she now the 95th victim to be murdered on the streets of dc this year. witnesses say they heard shot after shot after gunshot. a woman working inside the church said she looked outside of her window and saw a man's body by the church steps. family members of the victim were visibly grief striken and frustrated. that suspect got back in the vehicle and sped off. one woman heard seven shots ring out. long time residents say young people need to be given more support from their community.

what is it that police can do if anything? >> reporter: i talked to the chief this morning before any of the shootings today and she said they are doing a number of things. they are putting more officers on the streets throughout neighborhoods, particularly high crime neighborhoods and moving more lighting. portable generator powered light in neighborhoods where there have been more crimes. people need to serve the full term. a lot of people committing these murders are people who are convicted of felonies who were released early, people who had been convicted of murder once or twice before. judges need to hold people accountable.

photos. officials with knowledge of the case told us that sudafed, draino and a recipe were found inside the building and that a worker was arrested. bartly will appear in federal court for arraignment but the agency says it's conducting an internal review of staffing and policies because of this case. >> and the u.s. house science committee has launched its own review of what happened saying an explosion is of great concern and other workers there could have been hurt. the chairman said how long was this going on and did no one notice that a lab was being abused in this manner. >> we continue to cover our -- the district spike in violence that comes as the city is

described himself after he admitted to squeezing his infant son to stop crying. that child died august 4 at a home on ninth street. court documents say 28-year-old robert smith senior admitted becoming impatient with the infant many times over the course of the child's short five-week life. medical examiners say the infant had rib and spinal fractures in addition to other injuries. smith now charged with first degree murder. >> despite the recent spike in homicides, tourists continue to come here in droves. and while tourism officials say they are happy that the violence has not kept people away they tell tom sherwood that it is still a real concern. >> sudden gunfire and violence in many places around the city right now.

told police that they found man with a plastic bag over her head and that he told them that he did it. >> a mother has been charged with child knee gleneglect afte 1-year-old called 911. officers went to check out the house on royal court in wood bridge. they got there and found a 1-year-old little girl at that house alone. her mother showed up a short time later and they locked her up. t police say they are still not sure how that little girl dialed 911. and a woman says she doesn't know what to think after someone held up her 12-year-old son at gunpoint. what's more concerning? one of the robbers may be 8 years old. pat collins talked with people who lived in that area.

for the first time ever, two women have successfully completed the army's elite ranger school. 381 men and 19 women started this class but after 61 days of gruelling training, limited meals, sleep depravation and physical tests in harsh conditions, 94 men and two women were left standing. this is the first year that women have been allowed to take part in the ranger school. although they did complete the course, these two women will not be allowed to join the rangers. the army is still assessing how
