city honors his legacy. good morning, everyone, i'm aaron gilchrest. >> i'm angie goff. news of a man facing domestic violence charges after a s.w.a.t. team was called to a home in montgomery county. police say a woman left a house on valley bend drive in germantown and headed to a neighbor's after an argument with her boyfriend. her two young children stayed in the house with him. police tell news4 he took the kids to a house in prince george's county, and that's where he was arrested around 2:30 this morning. no one was hurt. 5:01. let's check in with meteorologist tom kierein with your wednesday weather headlines. tom? good morning. starting off, another morning of thick humidity in the air. temperatures in the low to mid 70s around the metro area, around the bay. parts of northern virginia and maryland, near 70 including shenandoah valley. in the mountains, 60s, more pleasant there. still quite humid, too. you see the city lights lighting up the humidity over washington.

yesterday. someone shot and killed 21-year-old amar'e jenkins outside st. luke's catholic church on east capital street. later a woman died in a shooting on savannah street southeast. that also injured her 12-year-old son. police found william connelly's body by 17th and evart northeast. this causing concern for communities and d.c. police. molette green live with what police believe is behind the problem and how they're responding. good morning. >> reporter: aaron, good morning to you. a big factor we're hearing from police in this crime wave -- illegal guns on the street. city leaders pushing hard to try to take them off the streets and save lives here. mayor bowser even tweeting about it to spread the news about this campaign now. over the last 30 days, police tell us they took more than 100 illegal guns off the streets, and they're also doing some

other interesting things that are necessary. adding lights to neighborhoods where there are not a lot of street lights so you can see what is going on. and the police blaming repeat offenders, ex-cons who are released from prison, some released early from prison. and they get out and commit additional crimes. that's the latest live from mpd headquarters. back to you. >> thank you. today a former fairfax county police officer heads to court facing a murder charge. a grand jury indicted adam torres on monday, two years after john gear was shot and killed. gear was unarmed. news4's derrick ward will join us later with the latest from fairfax county. today the man known as the subway guy is expected to plead guilty to child pornography charges. the sandwich giant tweeted, "we no longer have rape with jared and have no -- have a relationship with jare and have no further comment."

this after a child pornography investigation. subway suspended its relationship with jared fogle last month after federal agents searched his home in indiana and seized computers and dvds. he shot to fame by pitching the so-called subway diet. a prince george's county police officer is not on the job this morning after being accused of assault and child abuse. corporal steven moore was arrested monday in calvert county. sheriff's deputies said he assaulted his son and ex-wife during an argument. prince george's county police have suspended him. moore is a nine-year veteran of the work force and worked in administration. a former federal police chief expected to plead guilty to manufacturing meth at a high-security government lab. the news4 i-team says christopher bartley will plead guilty on friday. prosecutors say he tried to make meth at the national institute of standards and technology in gaithersburg where he was the pleep for the agency -- the police chief for the agency. this was the same day there was a suspicious explosion there. bartley's attorney said he was

conducting "an unauthorized training experiment." bartley resigned the next day. this morning, school buses heading out in st. mary's county. the first day of class for students there. then on monday, students in d.c., anne arundel, frederick, and howard counties will head back to school, as well. classes start for kids in calvert and prince george's county tuesday. where are you with your back-to-school shopping list? if you haven't started, you're not alone. this time last year, nearly 25% of folks surveyed by the national retail federation admitted they didn't buy anything. close to 60% of back-to-school shoppers surveyed this summer say they plan to spend the same amount as last year, while nearly 30% of households with school-age children plan to spend more than last year for back to school. today, honoring former d.c. mayor marion barry wants to hear from you. there will be a forum to hear your thoughts and gather ideas. the forum starts at 7:00 this

three men missing and presumed dead after a landslide in coastal alaska. photos show the devastation that the landslide left behind. the area had been hit bay heavy rains the day before. a witness described a sea of logs, mud, and debris. the entire landslide lasted just four minutes. take a close look at this video. this is from the embassy row hotel in dupont circle. d.c. police say a man threatened a woman there this past weekend. they say he tried to force open

we're watching a developing story closely. a critical search will happen in the coming hours after a motel 6 exploded in washington state. here's a picture of the devastating aftermath. this morning search and rescue will go through the rubble at daylight. they're waiting for the sun to come up so they can see. the explosion happened as the motel was already being evacuated for a gas leak. now the question -- did everyone make it out before the explosion? so far fortunately there have been no reports of anyone missing. 65 guests were staying at the motel at the time. unfortunately, a gas company worker was critically hurt. back to you. >> thanks. today a former fairfax county police officer heads to court facing a murder charge. a grand jury indicted adam torres on monday, two years after john gear was shot and killed. news4's derrick ward is in

fairfax county this morning, what's the latest? >> reporter: we can expect to hear this case take a turn essentially. you know, it's a short distance from the jail to the course house. this started in august of 2013. john gear was at his home. there had been a call for a domestic disturbance. police officers showed up from fairfax county at/i23 some poin turning this into a standoff. as they were negotiating with mr. gear to come out, officer adam torres, former officer adam torres, fired his weapon, striking and killing gear in his doorway. there have been accounts of what happened. torres said he thought gear was making a move for a weapon. other officers said he had his hand up. while this process started, as we said, shortly after that, we're ten days short of two years before we go to court.

the commonwealth attorney says this shouldn't have taken that long. later on today, adam torres will make his first court appearance. he was fired after an internal investigation at the end of last month and indicted this week. live in fairfax county, eric ward, news4. 5:18. today officials in the district are ramping up efforts to warn people about the dangers of synthetic drugs. the u.s. attorney's office and the d.c. prevention center have joined forces to hold a series of talks at area shelter. the meetings come in response to a spike in synthetic drug use in the district. the session is set for 7:00 at the community for creative nonviolence shelter in northwest. by the end of the day, the transit administration will have several proposals to consider for the purple line. private companies are competing for a chance to build and operate the project to connect montgomery and prince george's counties. today is the deadline for them to submit their bids. the deadline was pushed back twice before now.

mdot said it wanted to give bidders time to see if they could save money when they built that purple line. a controversial rule to conduct all business in english will not fly in frederick county, maryland. county council members repealed the law last night 4-3. >> having something on the books that has the perception this does allows for a lot of misinterpreting from employees. i think it's something that needs to go. >> you can go out and do business in 25 language. i don't have a problem with that. i think as a basic common society you have to have rules, you have to have parameters set. >> the law first passed in 2012. supporters argued it would save money. opponents said it was hard to enforce, and it violated federal and state statutes. maryland has confirmed its first human case of the west nile virus this year. we're told the patient is an adult in the baltimore area. west nile has been found in mosquitoes in prince george's and anne arundel counties. to avoid potential exposure, avoid areas with a lot of

mosquitoes. and use insect repellant. you can also consider wearing long pants and long sleeve shirts and a hat. new details on the problems metro is having with its brand new 7000 series rail cars. the "washington post" reporting metro had to stop and offload riders on one of the new trains monday. this happened at the ft. totten station on the red line. metro did not give specifics but says it is a software issue. the transit agency expect the company that manufactured the rail cars to provide a software update soon. a big day ahead for new england quarterback tom brady. this -- this as his attorneys and lawyers representing the nfl commissioner will be in court to debate his punishment for deflategate. the league could suspend brady for four game over the incident this year. today the judge wants the two sides to go through settlement talks again. neither brady nor commissioner goodell are required to be in court. you know, there's an app for just about everything these days including one that will randomly

banned items. the teen who said she was raped last year by a senior at a prestigious prep school will be back on the sand. owen lebri is accused of attacking a then-15-year-old freshman graduation weekend. prosecutors say he invited the girl call to an event called senior salute. a contest to see who could take the virginity of the most students before graduation. the alleged victim said she accepted the invitation but did not think it involved any special expectations -- any sexual expectations. his lawyers say emails between the two before and after the encounter suggest the girl was a willing participant. 5:25. new, a land owner in zimbabwe facing charge over the killing of cecil the lion. prosecutors say the land owner alloweded american dentist walter palmer to illegally hunt on his land. no charges have been made against the dentist who shot the lion. palmer is back to work at his practice in minnesota. as goes the pet owner, so goes the pet apparently.

amid growing political pressure and unsteady poll numbers, presidential candidate hillary clinton is on the defensive. she faces tough questions it whether the server holding her emails was wiped clean before handing it over to investigators. edward lawrence from capitol hill. seems this e-mail problem continues to consume clinton's campaign. >> reporter: exactly, hillary clinton lashed out at the reporters there saying blaming this controversy on republicans who says she can't beat her on the issues. hillary clinton after a town hall meeting in las vegas addressed the issue of using a personal e-mail server while secretary of state. she said in no uncertain term that she did not send classified material from the personal server. clinton says she used the server out of convenience so she could use one phone as opposed to two. republican marco rubio says this controversy shows incompetence. clinton says that she's not worried, and the investigation is nothing more than partisan

politics. five security agencies are reviewing now 305 emails. that number could grow as 80% of the emails that hillary clinton turned over have not been reviewed yet. sources say the fbi can recover some of the deleted emails from clinton's personal server. she says that all of those deleted emails were personal, not work related. the fbi wants to make sure that's the case. reporting live, edward lawrence, back to you. >> thank you. presidential candidate clinton also was talking about another issue -- black lives matter. talking about the movement. she said that movement should focus on policy changes rather than on changing hearts when it comes to issues impacting black americans. she had an intense exchange with members of the movement who arrived too late to get inside her town hall in new hampshire monday. >> i don't believe you change hearts. i believe you change laws, change allocation of resources, you change the way systems operate. you're not going to change every

intervene. prosecutors and defense lawyers will deliver closing arguments today. we'll send you a breaking news alert as soon as the jury decides on a verdict in this case. a developing story in thailand. there's a reward for information leading to the man accused of bombing a shrine in bangkok. security cameras spotted that man in a yellow shirt leaving a back pack at the shrine on monday, three minutes before the explosion. you see him in the video here. 22 people died that day. police believe the man did not act alone. and new this morning, we're getting a look at pictures of that deadly plane crash in indonesia. these are new images. the plane went down in bad weather over the weekend. all 54 people on board died. veterans at the american legion post on washington boulevard in arlington are not happy. the american flag that flies 24 hours a day in front of their building is missing. the p.o.w. flag that flies with it was also found lying on the ground. post manager sharon walker discovered that flag missing tuesday morning.

this is what firefighters are up against. this fire tornado, fire-nado if you will, taken by a firefighter in iowa. military troops have been called in for the first time in a decade to help. firefighters at n our area back home after helping fight the wildfires out west. they're from the maryland department of natural resources. they've been in california for most of the month, and some even longer than that, battling the wildfires. you want your kids to do well in school, but finding which rewards or incentives are helpful, that could be tough. this is more complicated for kids who are not self-motivated.

eliminate prison for 20 years -- could put him in prison for 20 years. a prince george's county police officer is not on the job this morning after being accused of assault and child abuse. corporal steven moore was arrested on monday in calvert county. sheriff's deputies say he assaulted his son and ex-wife during an argument. prince george's county police have suspended him. moure is a nine-year veteran of the force and works in administration. 5:50 now. more back and forth battling in the virginia general assembly. the state senate adjourned the other day in an attempt to push through one of governor terry mcauliffe's appointments to the state supreme court. however, republicans say the general assembly is still in session because the house has not adjourned. they say if mcauliffe reappoint his pick, it could be against the law. maryland governor larry hogan is halfway through his cancer treatment and says he's 95% cancer free. that announcement coming via twitter. hogan was diagnosed with
