two breaks stories. a dramatic moment inside a courthouse. >> the former police officer that shot and killed a man collapsed in front of a judge. meghan fitzgerald was there. tell us what happened. >> reporter: you hit the nail on the head when you said it was a dramatic scene inside that crowded courtroom. a judge denied bond first, to former fairfax county police officer adam torres, and, again, he didn't show any sort of emotional state or any warning signs. it was then when the judge set a

trial date for december 14th that adam torres fainted in court. if you take a look, you can see first responders on scene. they rushed inside to assist the former officer that fainted. it was about 30 minutes ago that they rushed inside to assist the former officer, facing a second degree murder charge. he didn't appear to show any signs of emotion until that moment. during court today, his attorney argued that the judge should set bond for him because he has roots in the community and doesn't pose a threat to anyone. the prosecution says he's a danger to the community because it was two years that he said he shot and killed john geer who had his hands up. this started in august of to 20 13. police responded to the house after a domestic call. they arrived and asked geer come outside. he mentioned he had guns and a gun was on the ground near him.

this is where things are clouded, if you will. there were conflicting reports on whether or not geer had his hands up. some officers said he did at the time that the officer fired that fatal shot. but the defense for the officer is saying that he was moving his hands down towards that gun and that's when the fatal shot was fired. at this point, we don't know exact lib where the officer is, where adam torres is at this point. but paramedics are still out here. a trial date has been set for december 14th, and we do know that the officer will remain in jail until that time. >> thank you. >> more breaking news right now. d.c. police have an apartment complex surrounded after finding a man's body. >> we don't need to tell you police have been busy with the spike in violent crime these past several weeks. the investigation centered on

stanton road. derek ward just arriving on the scene. what have you learned? >> reporter: well, i can tell you this all started at about 7:30 this morning, and it's focusing on a grassy wooded area wean t between the apartmentings. on the other side of the woods, behind this building, a woman was out walking her dog. she came upon a body. we're only being told as the body of a male. we don't have an age, and there appears to be a gunshot wound. whether that is the cause of death or not will be determined by the coroner, but the police and homicide detectives have been spending a lot of time trying to collect whatever evidence they can and a lot of people from the complex are out. things like this lead to frustration and fear but mainly frustration. >> they need to be on the street. the police chief and the men

need to walk the neighborhood. they need to walk the neighborhood. not just send somebody else to walk or drive through. >> reporter: and we're told there are regular police patrols in the neighborhood but there's a sense that they just drive through, and whether or not that had anything to do with this remains to be seen. of course, the investigation continues. i've talked to folks who said they don't remember hearing any gunshots this morning or late last night. there's no determination at this point how long the body has been back there but that will come out as the information continues. back to you. >> prior to that incident, pre other homicides in the last 24 hours has city leaders cracking down on illegal guns. they say illegal guns were involved in all three cases. >> they came hours part on a church, someone killed someone yesterday. >> in northwest d.c., police found william conley dying.

the life of congressman lihow stokes. he was ohio's first black member of congress. he served 15 terms in the house. he committed the committee investing the assassinations on jfk and martin luther king junior. stokes retired from congress in '99 and kept on working as an attorney. a month ago he announced he was suffering from brain and lung cancer. he was 90 years old. now to the latest on the campaign trail. right now former texas governor is speaking live with folks at the iowa state fair. he is the latest presidential candidate to make a stop there. he arrived as an underdog this time around. he's polling at 2%. four years ago it was a different story. he was a rock star heading into that campaign. we'll be watching to see the

family and friends of the man you see here are gathering in maryland right now. they're holding a funeral service for a man known as the rout 29 batman. he dressed up as mat ban to visit sick children in the hospital. he died when a car he built was hit this past weekend. his funeral service is at the synagogue in maryland today. his family is asking for donations to his charity, super heros for kids. >> we have to clouds around. tomorrow it looks like the chance comes in for showers.

breaking news right now at the live desk. we are hearing from the wife of subway's former front man, jared fogle about the child sex charges against him. his wife just came out with a statement saying obviously i am extremely shocked and disappointed by recent events involving jarod. i am in the process of seeking a disillusion of major. my focus is exclusively on the well being of my children. fogle is accused of paying to have sex with at least 14 minors. he's also accused of having child pornography. now, this afternoon he is pleading guilty in a plea deal. the deal includes going to prison for at least five years, registering as a sex offender and paying 1.4 million in restitution to his victims. right now firefighters in washington state are digging

through the debris of a hotel explosion. >> we have more on the explosion and why the hotel manager is being hailed a hero. >> reporter: it was a close call for guests crowded together on the street tuesday night. e volcano waited from the rooms minutes before a gas explosion levelled a large part of a motel six in washington. the manager says he sounded the alarm after getting a call about a gas leak. >> it's like okay, this could cause a major pandemonium, me pulling this alarm, but my gut told me to. >> fire on scene. the main supply line is broken. engine 2 evacuating the motel 6. >> reporter: the leak was reported before 8:00 p.m. and guests were immediately evacuated. 30 minutes later the explosion rocked the area blowing firefighters back 20 feet. witnesses reporting it felt like

a shock wave. >> the building just collapsed on top of each other. >> reporter: remarkably no guests were injured but a gas employee on the scene suffered second and third burns. he was air lifted to a medical center in critical condition. firefighters battled the blaze overnight at police this afternoon are investigating what caused the explosion. developing now, a dramatic scene in a fairfax county courtroom as an indicted former police officer fainted in the courtroom. adam torres passed out after a judge refused to grant him bail. the courtroom was cleared as he received treatment. he's charged with murder in the 2013 shooting death of john geer. he was indicted on monday. he said he saw the hands go down toward the waist as if he was

reaching for something. another police officer say gee re's hands were up when he was shot. these photos show us devastation of a landslide. the area was hit by heavy rains in that day before. a witness described arriving to a sea of logs, mud and debris. the entire landslide lasted about four minutes. >> all right. here at home, some weather concerns of our own. >> it is hot and muggy, and we could see some.
