the trial is set for next july. a school community is in mourning today. wootton high school principal michael warren died before the start of a new year. he was found dead inside his bethesda apartment. police believe the 64-year-old died from natural causes. a spokesperson said he was committed to his students and staff especially during tragic times. two recent graduates from the school died back in june. >> he knew every kid. he would put his arms around the kid. he would help them grieve but he wanted kids to learn from a tragedy. >> there will be a memorial service this friday at the school. the school year starts in less than two weeks. we are waiting to see what happens with your morning

commute in loudoun county. there's a chance that bus service could be disrupted again if drivers have another sickout day. they called off because of union negotiations. 14 of 58 bus runs were cancelled. take a look at the sky bee hind us, hues of orange and purple. a bit of a gloomy morning. >> storm is acoming. meteorologist tom kierein has a look at the weather headlines. >> let's just say it won't be real sunny. we have clouds around, producing some showers in the metro area. this is a line of some showers and storms that will be intensifying as it gets closer to us out of the midwest. right now, metro area we had one line of showers coming through, a little bit of thunder and lightning in the damascus and gaithersburg area. rockville getting a downpour there. another one, right near laurel that's tracking off along route 1, headed up anne arundel county. getting a few showers here in southeast washington. and then into maryland.

right along suitland parkway over to the beltway in prince george's county. these showers from clinton and up to bowie will be continuing to track off to the northea and east. we are in the 70s with 50% humidity or more. so it is quite steamy as we start off early this morning. now melissa is checking on the roads and what's happening now? >> have a problem in the district, right there at main avenue. we have a disabled truck off to the right side -- or a burr i should say. you're only getting by in the right lanes. we'll try to get some more information on that in the next couple of minutes. outer loop at new hampshire avenue, we have some construction there on the top of the beltway. b.w. parkway, 95, everything looking good. 270 into and out of town rolling along nicely. central avenue at kettering drive is blocked because of road work. see you at 4:41.

and everybody in the community and her family, whoever was close to her, you meant something to her. >> as the family mourns one of the most recent murder victim, police are conflicted on how to fight the spike in crime. cathy lanier says illegal guns are one of the major causes in the surge of murders this year. however, the police union says recent limits on officers keeping them from doing their job. they say the end of the plains clothe program earlier this year prevents sources from openly talking to officers. and the city is againsted affixed assignments on the blocks. >> there's no more proactive policing. they're putting up pop-up canopies, but not able to move around. >> chief lanier believes the programs are effective, but officers are resistant to change. this morning we are learning new details about another shooting victim. his name, johnson jonas.

we are told that a woman found his body while walking her dog near an apartment complex on stanton road southeast. jonas had been shot. the commissioner for the area said the recent spike in violence has been overwhelming. a killing of a young american university graduate near the shaw metro stop has ignited a lot of frustration in d.c. and tonight you can take your questions and concerns to a public meeting about crime and safety in that area. the advisory neighborhood commission is hosting a meeting at the thurgood marshall center tonight at 7:00 p.m. police have placed a mobile crime camera wre the shooting has happened. we are learned a judge will hear arguments in maureen mcdonnell's appeal. she and bob mcdonnell were found guilty of doing favors for a nutritional supplement executive in exchange for $165,000 in

gifts and loans and bob mcdonnell was sentenced to two years in prison and maureen mcdonnell one year and a day. today, we expect to hear the latest on the criminal invest into how two inmates escaped from prison in upstate new york. andrew wylie will brief the media. richard matt and david sweat escaped back in june. after a three-week manhunt, matt was killed and sweat was captur captured. today we will hear from president jimmy carter about his cancer diagnosis. he is speaking publicly for first time this morning. we'll stream his news conference live at 10:00 a.m. on the nbc washington app. former president announced he has cancer last week after recent surgery on his liver. he is 90 years old. all right. imagine coming home and your 12-year-old child has just whipped up a delicious meal, healthy for everybody. sounds -- >> that would be nice. >> little to food to be true,

firefighters say the fast actions of the manager there may have saved dozens of lives. she pulled the fire alarm after being told the gas line might be leaking. and she tried to make sure everybody was out. gas workers and firefighters were actually blown back by that blast. nobody seriously hurt though. officials in brazil are now acknowledging they have a sewage problem in the bay where several olympic events will be held next summer. however, they are denying it is affecting olympic test events taking place this week. the rio state sanitary company said the water was not to blame when a south korean athlete well ill. but four athletes have become sick after test events. >> got 13 american rowers who got sick. anyway, weather and traffic on the 1s. might need the umbrella today. >> hi, tom. >> good morning. we have had some showers and thundershowers come through over the last hour and now they're

from the crowd today. a baltimore police officer facing attempted murder charges this morning. the case is totally unrelated to freddie gray's death. baltimore's state attorney marilyn mosby said an officer shot the man who had been shot twice by other officers. he survived. a woman is suing the baltimore police department. she says she was beaten, illegally arrested and injured during a so-called rough ride in the police van. that's when they don't buckle someone in. brooks said she was waiting for a ride when an officer assaulted and handcuffed her and never buckled her into the van. shocked and profoundly disappointed. that is how the family of jared fogle describes their emotions. fogle's family said they're glad he's pleading guilty to child porn and sex charges and that he's seeking help. the former subway spokesman had

admitted to traveling to have sex with minors and having child porn on home computers. you know that hackers posted the personal information of millions of married people who they claim were using the cheating website, ashley madison. we are learning that d.c. had the highest amount of members. 15,000 of the addresses posted may belong to government workers. 22 with d.c. government e-mail addresses were included in the post and 22 in montgomery county were also involved. 4:49 right now. you have to see what somebody did on their farm in frederick county, maryland. they created -- yep, it's a corn maze. they have done this to support governor larry hogan who was diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma this year. the farm's owner said they lost

arundel county shortly. so it will be moving into bowie, coming into laurel, upper marlboro. we have a flash flood watch in effect for the metro area. all the counties in green for southern montgomery, all of fairfax, the district, alexandria, arlingtonington, -- arlington, anne arundel. some of the storms coming through could unload rain. rainfall totals could be an inch to two inches by the time this ends by late tonight. here's the hour by hour storm timing, no problems through much of the afternoon. but by around 3:00 or 4:00 some of the storms will get going in the shenandoah valley, then by 5:00 p.m., they start to cross the blue ridge and come into loudoun county, frederick county, maryland. then move farther to the east by 6:00 p.m. not into the metro area, so maybe around 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. some heavy downpours with thunder and lightning may cause flooding. in is as of 8:00 p.m.

you're watching "news4 today." >> it's going to be hot, steamy and uncomfortable in two metro stations for the rest of the summer. the chiller systems that cool it at the dupont systems, those are filled with leaks. adam tuss found temperatures in both stations hovering right around 90 degrees. a fix could be months away and could disrupt thousands of commuters. paul cram from metro explains. >> it has to be dug up 400 feet in each direction. the supply launch to the cooling tower underneath connecticut avenue. >> metro hopes to have the chillers fixed by spring. the army is facing a $750 million wrongful death suit over claims that toxins from both ft. detrick have caused cancer. for years, they have faced criticism for the handling of chemical and biological agents.
