. . . with heavy rain in the forecast this afternoon and evening, a weather alert day. i'll have the timing and impact for you. breaking just within the past hour. we learn new details that give us an idea of how serious the diagnosis is for former president, jimmy carter. we begin "news 4 midday." breaking knew. a fire inside an apartment in the city of quantico. we have learned at least one person did not make it out alive. this is happening along broadway street less than a mile from marine corps base quantico. our megan fitzgerald just arrived on the scene. meagan?

>> reporter: we are told whether firefighters arrived, they saw thick, black smoke pouring out of the second floor window. you can see the smoke charred the brick. we are told a total of six people lived inside, a family and another person. five people were able to make it out. fire investigators tell us when they extinguished the flames, this he discovered an elderly man did not make it out. the mayor tells us the man inside was bed ridden. still an ongoing investigation. it is still very active as well. prince william county police, homicide detectives out here investigating. if you turn around over here, you can see the areas blocked off. this is still considered a very active and ongoing investigation. we talked to the deputy fire marshal moments ago who tells us it was the smoke alarms that likely saved the lives of those five individuals who made it out. >> some of the residents were

awoken by the sound of the smoke detector. they did exit the building and roust their family to try and escape the fire. some were met by heavy smoke, retreated back to the rooms and were effectively rescued by quantico fire rescue via window and balcony by ground ladder. >> this fire is sftill under investigation. we are told the family that's being des placisplaced well be d by the red cross. reporting live, megan fitzgerald, news 4. the d.c. metro area under a flash flood watch that will begin at 4:00 p.m. and run until midnight. this includes washington, arlington, anne arundel, montgomery and up threw the ballty more area. so what you can expect. a period of heavy rain is likely

specially during the evening hours. that's going to reduce visibility and cause hydroplaning concerns. there will be some isolated flash flooding concerns across the area. we are looking at a wide range of rainfall from a quarter to up to 2 inches. the greatest concern is going to be heavy rain. with he could see a severe thunderstorm or two. the main concern would be some high winds that could produce very isolated wind damage. what we are going to continue to track is the concern for heavy rain. i'm going to have the latest timing on when you can expect rain moving through your neighborhood in about 10 minutes. >> breaking news right now at the live desk. for the first time, we are hearing directly from president jimmy carter about his cancer diagnosis in a press conference within the hour. carter says he has melanoma and it has spread to his brain. it was found first in his liver after he had part of his liver

removed. doctors found more cancer. take a listen here. >> they did an mri and found there were four spots of melanoma on my brain. they are very small spots, about 2 millimeters, if you can envision what ia millimeter is. i'll get my first radiation treatment for the melanoma in my brain this afternoon. >> the first treatment today and then president carter will undergo three more radiation treatments at three-week intervals. carter says it is very likely doctors will find more cancer. the former president is 90 years old and being treated at emory university in atlanta. we now know the names of two people that died in a crash in prince george's county. this happened on branch avenue at the intersection with earnshaw drive. prince george's county police say lawrence jarvis jr. and wanda troy both died.

they were in a volvo trying to go across the road. the police say they failed to yield the right-of-way and a chrysler slammed into the car. two people in the kras letter we chrysler were taken to the hospital expected to survive. a woman who was shot by a d.c. police officer after she refused to drop a knife. she started a fire in a house on clay tear ris northeast earlier this month as police and fire crews arrived, nettles walked towards an officer holding a knife. her mother and neighbors yelled at her to drop it. they say she was using a mixture of pcp and synthetic drugs. nettles in court for that mental observation hearing today. >> the redskins taking on the detroit lions today. a team second pre-season game. their first at home this year. the first game at fedex field since last december. we just checked. you can still buy tickets for the skins for as low as $38 and as much as $445. watch the game right here on nbc

shooting. angry protesters threw glass bottles and bricks at officers and set fire to cars at homes. when the group wouldn't clear an intersection, police used gas and tear gas on the group to protest hours after police shot and killed an 18-year-old black man. mr. is say he pulled a gun on them when they were trying to issue a search warrant at his home. >> a family and their two dogs are safe after a house fire in prince george's county. they had to be rescued from the house. firefighters were called to that scene on lake arbor way in largo. no word on what caused the fire. the mother of reeva steenkamp says she is happy now the early prison release of pistorius has been put on hold. he was set to leave a south african prison and be placed on house arrest. he served 10 months for his five-year sentence. june steenkamp called exclusively with matt lauer. she called the decision, justice for reeva. >> i'm very, very pleased about

today is the storm team 4 weather alert day due to the potential of flash flooding specially during the evening hours. it is warm and humid outside. i am also hearing on twitter that some areas are starting to see peeks of sunshine. that break in the cloud cover will help to intensify any rainfall we are tracking today. temperatures in the 70s and 80s. 81, washington. a high today of 86. areas of rain this afternoon, downpours are possible and maybe a thunderstorm or two and then a period of rain moves through the region this evening. that could lead to some flash flooding concerns. the timing, right around the start of the redskins pre-season game. this cold front clears the area overnight. that's going to set us up for nice weather. plenty of sunshine, lower humidity. a high of 87. nice on saturday.

now, on "news 4 midday," we are in weather alert mode, showers and storms lighting up storm team radar. >> the threat is not going to go away any time soon. let's get to meteorologist, amelia segal now for an update. >> here is the latest on storm team 4 radar. you can always download our nbc washington app. you can get the radar there in the palm of your hand. if you are heading out this evening, you can track the rain moving through. i am starting to see some very heavy rain develop mainly to the east of i-95 impacting parts of southern maryland generally moving north/northeast ward. this moving out, not impacting the district. walkersville, right around the

noontime air dwra. the real reaction will happen this evening when this cold front pushes through the area from about 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. high temperature of 86 degrees. that will hit at 3:00 p.m. through the evening hours. temperatures hang around in the 80s. another check at future weather coming up in about ten minutes developing out west right now, wildfires raging outwest have forced hundreds of people from their homes. >> several firefighters are recovering from injuries. three firefighters have died. nbc's leanne gregg has the latest op th latest on this developing story. leanne. >> reporter: it is with a heavy heart firefighters return after losing three of their own. it will be extremely dangerous for the firefighters. the winds will be stronger and will alive earlier. >> the latest wild fire that erupted in washington state is being described by the local

sheriff as a hellstorm. erratic flames fueled by high winds broke out wednesday and quickly multiplied in size threatening two small towns. >> more than 1,000 people were evaluated from the towns of twisp and winthrop. residents had little time to get out. >> it came so fast, oh, moo i god, just smoke and big plumes of smoke. >> three u.s. forest firefighters were killed after their vehicle crashed and they were overcome by flames. four other firefighters were injured. one critically. 15 wildfires are burning out of control in washington state and the forecast isn't helping. sustained winds of more than 40 miles an hour are predicted. officials described the fire as a sleeping giant that will be awakened today by an epic wind event. >> it has gotten insane. the wind doesn't go in one direction. it keeps shifting. it goes one way and then the

other way. >> 1 million acres have already burned across the west with no end in sight. >> reporter: crews at this fire are working on containment lines today. the air attack is continuing as long as the weather holds. from washington, i am leanne gregg, news 4. >> thank you, leann. >> this afternoon, the man accused of murdering university of virginia court, hannah graham, will be in court for a pre-trial hearing. jesse matthew is charged with capital murder. today, a judge will hear about a dozen motions. one calls for banning people in the courtroom from displaying any symbols supporting graham. his trial is next july. >> the school will start on time at thomas wooten high school. it won't be the same place. principal michael dorn was found dead yesterday. as our zachary quiche reports, students are feeling the loss. >> reporter: the death of michael dorn has rocked the school community here at wooten high school. you can see the memorial that's happening here. this is his parking spot right

in front of the school. this is today, the day that teachers return. this is the day they would have seen mr. dorn for the first time since the summer break. dorn had been here for about 12 years. he had made a name for himself, a reputation for being a fierce advocate for the students. when things got tough is when he stood up. i had an opportunity to talk to him this spring after another tragedy, the death of a couple students in a car accident. the way that he spoke of the students here, it was clear he looked at them not just as students but as people, people that needed his love, people that needed his affection. he was found dead yesterday in his apartment. he was just 64 years old. >> it hasn't been easy at all, by any means. he has lost so much. he had a positive impact around

the high school. this will be here at 6:00 p.m. tomorrow evening, a memorial in the football stadium. a new study says nearly a quarter of employed mothers returned to work within two weeks of giving birth. yes, two weeks. how is that even possible? the nonprofit magazine analyzed data taken in 2012 from the department of labor. the study says 23% of women who had left work to care for an infant took less than two weeks off. most of the women said they couldn't afford the pay cut. 80% of college grads took at least six weeks off to care for a new baby. only 54% of women without degrees did the same. >> a new report that shows just how far some of us are willing to commute. plus, a

cheating website, ashley madison. now, we are learning that d.c. has the highest percentage of members in the united states. 15,000 of the e-mail addresses posted may belong to government workers. 22 people with d.c. government e-mail addresses were included in that post. another 22 people with montgomery county government e-mail addresses were allegedly also involved. amelia? melissa, here is the latest as we head on into the afternoon and evening hours. the main focus is on heavy rain that could lead to some concerns for flash flooding. not widespread but isolated. as a line of storms moves through during the evening hours, that line could have high winds that could produce isolated wind damage. the real concern will be some areas of flash flooding, specially in the d.c., metro area. today, no the a great pool day with rain, storms and plenty of clouds around. by friday and the weekend, looking good. plenty of sunshine. lower humidity. here is the latest on storm team
