breaking right now at 6:00, a 30-hour police standoff with a murder suspect just ended. we're live with what sparked the original violence. the roof on a local townhouse collapsed, and not everybody made it out okay. developing right now, the moment that may of you have been waiting for, the national zoo's giant panda just gave birth. breaking right now, the neighborhood lockdown in

brookland ended after a more than 30-hour standoff. tonight we're learning more about the 63-year-old woman whose murder led to the barricade. news 4's derrick ward joins us live. >> reporter: it ended about ten minutes after 5:00. we saw emergency vehicles start to leave. still a pris presence on this street and folks breathing a sigh of relief. some saying, we've got our neighborhood back. by all accounts, the woman who was a beloved member of this community is gone. it appears to have ended peacefully after a nearly 30-hour standoff. a suspect handcuffed is placed into an ambulance. it began violently. it started with a shooting, 63-year-old loretta carswell is shot dead in the street, killed by a cousin. >> he calls her outside. she goes outside. he shoots her. >> the suspect then runs back up the block to the house, fires

off a couple more shots and the standoff begins. police intact cal gear set up around the house. the entire block, a large slab of this d.c. neighborhood is cordoned off. >> charmaine hawkins left friday morning before it happened. she hasn't been able to go home since. she lives on the block that's now under siege and has had to stay with relatives. her longing for home is only rivaled by the sadness. she was familiar with the victim and the suspected shooter. >> the sadness that this wasn't resolved and a life is gone. so is his really. >> reporter: what could have prompted such bad blood between family members. >> they let him stay there for years. he upset. they told him he had to leave by the first of september. >> reporter: in contrast with the armored vehicles and heavily armed police presence, it will never be the same. >> it's so sad. >> reporter: and all within a family that's been part of the

fabric of this neighborhood for years. we have not confirmed the name of the suspect shooter, the man taken into custody. we do believe he is in his 70s and indeed the first cousin of the woman shot. live in northeast, derrick ward, news 4. a rough week for prince george's county firefighters. roofing tell on a lieutenant while he was fighting this fire in suitland. he had to be taken to shock trauma in baltimore today. we are told he's expected to be okay. this happened as another firefighter was released from the hospital. he was seriously burned fighting a fire in laurel earlier this week. a dig developing story from the national zoo. zoo officials confirm giant panda mei xiang has given birth. these are pictures from the pan

ka cam. her water broke about an hour ago. a few minutes after that the arrived. darcy spencer has more. >> reporter: it's exciting, incredible, awesome. it has happened. this is what people have been waiting for. let's go to the video of the birth. you know they have the panda cams here. people were rolling when this happened right around 5:30 this afternoon. that little cub was born, and you can hear the little squealing. that's the cub squealing. that's good news. you want to hear that. that's what we've heard in years past when weave had cubs born here at the national zoo. it's exciting and credible news. we found out earlier today that mei xiang had gone into labor, so we had a feeling this was going to happen today. wh but we just didn't know when. the water broke within the last hour and, hey, right around 5:35

we find that the little cub was born. again, you can hear the cub squealing and that is good news, a live birth. it's wonderful news here at the zoo. people were over at the panda exhibit all day today. i was able to talk to people from pennsylvania, people from all over the area who found out that a cub might be born and they wanted to come see itment we did a few interviews. i want to play a couple of those just to show how special this is to so many people. >> we were planning on staying one day and then we stayed two days. if it doesn't happen, we're staying -- i'm not leaving. i'm staying right here. i've been here since 8:00 this morning. >> reporter: you're hoping to actually be watching when she delivers? >> i sure do. being from arkansas, we don't have pandas in arkansas. this is a very nice special gift to be able to see. >> reporter: that was a very special gift. chances are those folks i interviewed were right there glued to the monitor and watched that live birth.

just an exciting time here at the zoo. press conference scheduled for later this afternoon. erica, back to you. >> thank you so much, darcy. appreciate that. we'll continue to watch that story. you can also take a look back at the current panda cub wbao bao. you can head to the nbc washington app and search panda. a young man was the 100th person murdered in the district, identified as antonio dean. someone shot him before 3:00 this morning. they found his body along stevens road in southeast. investigators have not released information on a possible suspect or a motive. and then, not long after that, police responded to the 101 homicide. police say kenneth watson is the gentleman in this case. kenneth watson junior, i should say, was found shot to death. police have no suspects. they're offering a $25,000

reward to anybody who can provide any type of information that leads to an arrest. news 4 crunched the numbers and this is the fastest the district has reached 100 homicides since 2008. last year and in 2013, d.c. did not reach 100 murders until december. for a map of the homicides and information on the, quote, pray for d.c. hash tag, you can search homicide in our nbc washington app. medical examiners will conduct an autopsy tomorrow on a man who died at the arlington county detention facility. officials say 48-year-old anthony gordon had a history of medical issues. gordon was in the jail for saudi arabia assault and bad battery. police are investigating the death which is standard procedure. a fighter jet bursts isn't a ball of flames. see what it was doing right before it crashed down.

the alleged sale of unborn fetus parts by leaders of the organization. the center for medical progress released undercover videos earlier this month that allegedly showed planned parenthood officials haggling over fetus prices. planned parenthood claims the videos are selectively edited and deny selling any fetus parts for profit. we've got new information on a murder in bowie. police say 17-year-old jajuan mcgray was found last night on rockport lane. they said he had trauma to the upper body is the way they're describing it but would not specify what caused the injuries. an ambulance took mccray to the hospital where he died. police do not have any information on a motive or suspect in this case. right now four metro stations are closed as metro begins its weekend track work. potomac avenue, stadium armory, minnesota avenue and deanwood

horrified spectators watch as a fighter jet crashes to the ground during an air show in england today. seven people were killed. the pilot was performing a loop when something went terribly wrong. the military jet burst into flames after crashing onto several cars on the road next to the air show. 14 other people were injured. the rest of the air show has been canceled. they are being called american heroes. three childhood buddies who sprang into action stopping a gunman on board a high-speed train in france. that man armed with an ak-47.

the heroes, two of them service members, prevented what could have been a massacre. as nbc's kelly koeb ayeah reports, president obama personally called them to congratulate the men on their courage. >> reporter: for the three americans who took down a gunman on a packed train last night will be in pir ris tonight ahead of a meeting with french president francois hollande. spencer stone, alex skol latos and anthony sadler were traveling to europe together. they're childhood friends. >> we stopped a terrorist. it's kind of crazy. >> reporter: they heard gunshots on board the train and then saw a gunman with an ak-47. >> i just looked over at spencer and said let's go, go. >> reporter: the two took down the gunman with the help of their friend anthony sadler. a british businessman then helped to tie up the suspect. >> what else is there to do?

either you sid down and you die or you get up and you die. we've seen enough of these kinds of attacks to understand that they will kill everybody once they get started. >> reporter: one man was shot in the neck and is expected to survive. stone has had surgery on his hand for a cut. as for the suspect, the french interior minister say they're not ready to identify him or talk about a motive. he did say the attacker was armed with an automatic rifle, nine magazines a handgun and a knife. he's now in police custody and is believed to be a 26-year-old moroccan flagged for involvement in islamist groups. back to you. >> kelly koeb ayeah, thank you so much. incredible story. beautiful day in town and a couple more days and the kids are back in school. parents are looking forward to getting them out of the house and hopefully getting good weather to go with it. >> exactly. the weather won't impact the
