this morning. in upper marlboro, ritchie-marlboro road at the beltway, eastbound lanes are blocked because of the water main break. and wssc is out on the scene. 270 at old hundred road seeing a bit of volume headed southbound. when you look at the map, 270 looks yellow. but really moving, no major problems. 95 at 123, northbound and southbound rolling along nicely. travel times in ten minutes. >> thank you. many of you are going back to school this morning. it is the first day of school in prince george's county. >> yep. parents as you finish packing the lunches, a lot of new things to know about. news4's molette green is live at the bladensburg for us with school officials talking to them about the new changes. molette? >> reporter: absolutely. even without a big budget increase prince george's schools opened today with great expectations. 2,000 newly enrolled student, no

129,000 students, nearly 870 new teachers and six new literacy coaches to help the struggling students get ahead and get on track. we are outside one of two new international schools that will be focusing on recent immigrants and second generation students who are still learning to master the english language. joining me now is the new school's ceo, dr. kevin maxwell. he literally just drove up a couple of minutes ago. good morning. and welcome. thank you so much for joining us. >> oh, thank you for having me. it's a wonderful day. >> reporter: great expectations on the start of school. we are hearing about thomas close closing out of mt. rainier because of a water main break. >> yeah. with no water, there's no way we can have the kids there and wssc is saying the repairs will take a while. >> reporter: so you're opening schools with great expectations even though you're working

within a tighter budget. you wanted much more money to do a lot more, expanding pre-k, paying teachers more competitive salaries. tell me how you'll still do what you need to do within that budget. >> so we're asking for more on the budget. and that is, you know, partly because we want to be able to get the work accomplished more quickly than we'll do it without the investment in our education system. but i think, you know, with the work that we have identified in this strategic plan it's still work we can begin to implement. we won't have the -- you know, the extra prekindergarten classes or we won't be able to increase the salaries the way we would have liked to be more competitive. we won't add the literacy coaches, gifted specialists in elementary schools that we had wanted to do but that doesn't mean we're not committed to the work. i think we shifted our gears with professional development to make sure that people really understand what our expectations are. the high expectations you talked about.

you can see it's smoldering on the side of the road. this is in silver spring on new hampshire avenue near the beltway. we'll let you know as soon as we find out more about what happened. police in montgomery county trying to figure out who vandalized more than 25 cars in northern potomac. it happened yesterday. if you were a victim but haven't reported it yet police want to hear in you. they want to hear from anybody who knows something about the damaged cars. 6:06. today leaders in maryland say they're working to end racial profiling by police. the maryland attorney general brian frosh is holding a news conference at 11:00 a.m. he'll announce a new standard for police investigations. we don't know the details of the plan right now. the announcement comes four months after freddie gray's death in baltimore police custody. six officers are facing charges for his death. another potential safety defect under investigation this morning. this time it impacts tens of

the indycar driver hit in the head during the crash has died. justin wilson was 37 years old. pocono raceway officials say he was behind the initial crash on sunday when a piece of debris hit him and sent him into the wall. they say wilson died at the hospital last night. the last time an indycar driver died because of an accident on the track was in 2011.

a developing story now. the west coast is getting help to battle the fast moving wildfires in washington state. fire crews from australia and new zealand picked up their equipment in idaho yesterday. the overseas help will bolster the 32,000 firefighters already in the field. right now, washington state is dealing with 16 large wildfires. that cover more than 920 square miles. 6:11 or time right now. we are approaching sunrise, a cool 67 degrees outside our studios. easy to get off to school this morning. >> that's right. let's check in with storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell. good morning. >> good morning, yeah, the cooler, drier air moving in. temperature at national airport is down four degrees in the last couple of hours, so that's nice. a light breeze will keep a beautiful day in place. temperatures will be in the mid 60s through 7:00 a.m. mid to upper 70s by lunch time.

today. prince george's county schools back in session. and some students will going -- are going to this brand new school in bladensburg. coming up, we'll talk to officer dr. kevin maxwell about the new school year. you have to watch for school buses on the roads today, there are a whole lot of them too. news4's kristin wright is live at the school bus lot in bowie where many are leaving right now. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, guys. that's right. the buses are leaving right now. just one after the other. a steady stream of them. you can see the bus drivers headed to the buss this morning. the bus system in prince george's county is really important because more than 83,000 students here ride the school bus. that's most of the students in the county. 83,015 students ride the buses. 1,100 buses ride every morning. every afternoon in prince george's county.

most of those buses about 977 of them are equipped with security cameras. that's really, you know, added comfort to a lot of parents who want to make sure that children on the bus, they're doing what they're supposed to do. and they have added more of those cameras on school buses this year. it's really peace of mind for a lot of parents. more than 20 school buses, about 20 of them have the traffic cameras that make sure that drivers outside of the buses are doing what they're supposed to do now, we talked to the supervisor of this particular lot. this is one of 12 in the particular district here. we talked to the supervisor this morning and he explained to us that the bus drivers recently did some testruns, dry runs yesterday. two weeks ago to make sure that sure everything was on track. he said everything was smooth so they had their fingers crossed that everything runs smoothly today. so far, so good. the buses are leaving on time. back to you. >> kristin, thank you. counties in northern

virginia want to make sure that students are safe when they head back to school next week. groups from loudoun and fairfax counties are holding a transportation safety event in a few hours. they'll talk about best practices around pedestrians and bicycles. 2,000 school aged children are killed in traffic crashes every year. 6:18. looks like some students in stafford county have to wait to go back to school. crews were not able to move into the new building over the weekend. that means that classes will start september 14th, and not the 8th. another deadline hits this friday. we'll keep you post. nbc4's backpack for kids five is a day away. you can come out to tomorrow. this thursday, watch news4 to

donate to our phone banks starting at 11:00 a.m. this just in to the live desk out of zimbabwe. a lion killed a safari guide. it happened as the guide was tracking wildlife in a game reserve. this is the same park that was home to the beloved cecil the lion who was killed outside the park by an american dentist last month. the lion that killed the guide was also collared. being monitored for an oxford university study. 6:19 now. brand-new details about a fight in northwest washington. police detectives say a man died after an attack on fairmont street last saturday. this happened a block away from howard university. 35-year-old edo fell and hit his head. he died the next day. d.c. police say they caught the suspect who robbed a man in

a wheelchair. it was all caught on surveillance video in a store on wheeler road. police say in this video 47-year-old earl matthews forcefully takes something from a wheelchair bound man. officers arrested matthews on sunday and charged him with robbery. a prince george's county woman is accused of intentionally running her husband over with her husband. 37-year-old araceli alvarez-mendoza is charged with murder. police say she was arguing with her husband fernando fragoso-duana sunday afternoon when he walked out of the house. according to police she followed him in her suv and ran him over. he became pinned underneath the car and died. alvarez-mendoza is being held without bond. a park police officer is going to be okay after crashing his motorcycle. you see the video here that officer had to be airlifted to the hospital after the crash yesterday. the medical helicopter you see there landed right on the 14th street bridge. the officer crashed into a jeep on 395 around 6:30 last night.

he has a broken collarbone. so you know it's not a good thing when your car rolls away after you put it in park but this is happening to hundreds of thousands of grand cherokees. that's according to jeep. the company is looking at the suvs from the 2014 and 2015 model year. the national highway traffic administration says it caused five crashes. at this point, jeep is not recalling any of the suvs. a new survey shows americans are really sick of recalls. the american consumer satisfaction index said that's the main reason that overall satisfaction in cars and trucks dropped for the third straight year in a row. right now, it's at the lowest level in more than a decade. the only two companies to see their scores go up -- acura and bmw. it considered responses from 4,300 people. such a rush to crank out new, better, faster, fancier, just get it right.

one witness says the apartment building in queens, new york, crumbled in and caved in on impact. jaws of life were used to pull out the driver. the bus driver swerved to avoid hitting a car and hit the building. today you can learn more about how new orleans will prepare itself for a disaster. today the city is releasing its resiliency report. that report comes as that city marks ten years after hurricane katrina. it aims to identify the city's priorities and prepare for another devastating event like katrina. more than 1,800 people died in the hurricane and the flooding that followed. in "news4 your health" now, a series of new studies could eliminate flu shots all together. a california company is developing a pill based vaccine for the flu. in the first phase of the study more than half of the small pool of volunteers built up enough antibodies to be considered protected against flu. but these pills still have a long trial period before hitting

pharmacy shelves. well, apparently, cryotherapy is the hot new trend out there. the treatment involves blasting freezing nitrogen on you inside a cold chamber. 200 degrees below zero. cryotherapy claims to provide everything from muscle inflammation relief to skin tightening and weight loss. the catch it's not cheap. never is. you have to pay $50 to $100 to spend three minutes in one of the chambers. the chamber itself can cost up to $50,000. >> you have to weigh the cost benefit there. if you believe there's a real benefit. >> to being super, super cold. how much benefit? >> tightens your skin and sucks out the fat. freezes it off, i guess. starting the school year off on a bad note. the punishment being handed down for a fraternity in virginia after the controversial greeting signs went up. and a live look in the harbor, the rain has cleared out this morning.

i'm angie goff at the live desk with breaking news for parents in prince george's county. we got word that thomas stone elementary school which is locate in mount rainier, maryland, is closed because of a water main break. now, at this time we know that school starts at 7:45, so people may be headed that way. but school is closed for the day. we have made calls to wssc to find out about the exact location of this break, how big it is. and overall, its impact on the customers in the area. >> thanks for that update. most kids in prince george's county are probably rolling out of bed right now. wiping the sleep from their eyes and getting ready for first day of school. >> yeah, storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell is tracking what they'll see at the

b.w. parkway at 100, still a backup there. 66 into town, 95, volume light. beltway at van dorn street is rolling along nice. through clarksburg, a little slow. we have debris on the roadway but sounds like it's cleared. ritchie-marlboro road at the beltway, two eastbound lanes are blocked and one westbound lane. >> thank you. it's 6:32. right now, metro is changing one of its bus routes after someone shot at a bus. we are learning that metro has imposed a seven day detour off of elvans road southeast. meagan fitzgerald is at the anacostia metro station with more on this. when does this kick in, meagan? >> reporter: well, aaron it took effect yesterday and lasts until monday. starting at 7:00 p.m., the metrobus will skip the elvans bus stop. this is because of the recent increase of violence around the bus stop. you may recall on friday night,

police responded to the 2400 block of elvans road for a shooting. investigators say a suspect opened fire on a man riding the metrobus. investigators say the victim was targeted. he was taken to the hospital and is said to be okay. but metro says this is just one of many incidents of violence that has taken place in and around that bus stop. now in addition to the w-8 after 7:00 p.m., skipping the elvans road stop there. metro says that they have increased patrols for metro pd in addition to mpd as well. >> meagan fitzgerald, thank you. 6:33. we are hearing the 911 calls from an intense violent robbery in gaithersburg. an attempted robbery ended with two elderly cleaning store employees shot. take a listen. >> montgomery county 911. what is the address of the emergency? >> i have been shot. >> sir, i'm sorry, you have been shot? >> yes. yes. a guy come through the door.

shot -- shot through the glass door. he shot me. i think i have been hit in the hand and the leg. >> montgomery county police say two men shot those employees last november. one was convicted of attempted murder last week. prosecutors say a key witness came from the hospital to testify after she had a stroke. police are looking for one other man right now. kervon noel. he told the shooters that the cleaning company had tens of thousands of dollars of cash on hand. two children saw a man shoot his brother. this morning the suspect is in custody. officers think the victim will survive. you can see here chopper 4 flew over the townhouse complex yesterday afternoon. neighbors told news4 they were alarmed to hear gunshots and see officers on their streets, guns drawn. police say the suspect shot his brother three times. 6:34.

it's time to head back to school for some students. prince george's county back in session today. you're looking at one of two new schools for the county this year. this is annapolis road academy in bladensburg. coming up, we will talk with the president about the new school year. you can download a new app to help you keep safe. the you ask app was created to stop rapes on campus. it provides a panic button. resources and information for victims. mary cheh and several city agents are holding a kickoff event later this morning. well, parents in maryland in one community there may feel safer this school year. extra security will be added at some school events in frederick county. >> school officials have reached an agreement with the police union over security at frederick high school and governor thomas johnson. >> two students were injured at a shooting back in february. police will be at sporting

accused of a sex assault in northwest. he may be aer ber driver. the attack happened around grant circle in the petworth neighborhood. former virginia governor bob mcdonnell may not have to go to prison for a while. a ruling from the u.s. supreme court will keep him free for now. mcdonnell was found guilty of 11 counts of corruption last year. he is appealing to the supreme court and chief justice john roberts issued an order saying that he will not have to report to prison this sunday. this effectively ensures that mcdonnell will be free while the court decides whether to take up his case. right now, we are watching global markets for signs that stocks are finally stabilizing after days of heavy losses. the dow took a huge hit yesterday. cnbc's landon dowdy here with what investors can expect in the day ahead. >> hey, there, aaron, good morning. we saw a shocking day yesterday,
