our app after the victory. the redskins beat the ravens in the third preseason game. jason pugh is live in baltimore with highlights. hey, jason. >> hey. the redskins looked pretty good, especially in that second quarter moving on against the ravens tonight. they win their third preseason game of the preseason. they called this the dress rehearsal. kirk cousins got the start in place of robert griffin iii and got the first team offense into the end zone. let's look at how this one went down tonight. jay gruden wishing his quarterback the best of luck. kirk cousins got the start in place of griffin. early on, he threw an interception in the game. he got comfortable and settled down. second quarter, down 13-0. that one deflects off the hands of andre roberts and into the hands of the rookie, jameis crowder. his first nfl touchdown, 22-yard strike and got the redskins first team offense, finally on the board this preseason. later in the half, cousins with the short pass to ryan grant.

preferential sale of state property to government officials. a prosecutor is now calling for a review of the sale. new at 11:00 tonight, a single mother killed during a holiday cookout in the district. three months later, her family is demanding justice. darcy spencer is taking a closer look at the number of unsolved murders in d.c. and talking to those directly touched by the violence. >> reporter: we are still trying to get that information from d.c. police tonight. we do know there have been 105 killings in the district so far this year. and police tell us that they have made 61 arrests for murder, but we still don't know how many of the cases here in 2015 remain open. and tonight i spoke to one mom who is still waiting for justice. >> i still hurt. i still hurt. >> reporter: at 7th and o streets in the shaw neighborhood

of northwest washington stands a memorial to one of d.c.'s unsolved murder victims. tamara bliss was killed when she was hit by stray gunfire outside her home not far from the convention center on memorial day. her mom is angry, no arrest has been made, three months after her death. >> not only we feeling bad, you know, she has a son. she has a brothers. and it is just hurts. >> reporter: have have been more than 100 lives lost on the streets of the nation's capital so far this year. a double digit increase over last year. many of those cases are still unsolved. gliss is one of the grieving mothers who can't rest, knowing a killer is on the loose. >> american university student got shot. then we see all the police presence and everything. but just like i said, my daughter's case is unsolved and you hear less about it. >> reporter: at the place where

gliss lost her life, the recent violence prompted police to set up a temporary post. her mom says police have a person of interest in her daughter's murder. but that's not enough. >> if they don't have that person, that one person that can come out and say that this person did it, it doesn't mean anything. it is just another unsolved murder. >> reporter: and she's right about that. now, d.c. police spokesperson told us through an e-mail today they can provide the information about how many unsolved murders there have been in the district so far this year. but that won't happen until monday. back to you, kristin. >> we'll be waiting for that number. now two more murders on their hand. two men were killed on b street in southeast late last night. it was just one of six different shooting scenes in the district overnight. seven other people were shot. this latest round of violence is happening during the police

department's all hands on deck crackdown on crime. and police identified the two men killed as omoni johnson and shaheed james. >> these two guys, one of them hugged me yesterday, they called me mr. johnson. >> police say during the first night of all hands on deck, they did make nine arrests and took nine illegal guns off the streets as well as some high capacity magazines. the man accused of killing a texas sheriff's deputy will be in court on monday. shannon miles is facing capital murder charges. the harris county sheriff's office says he ambushed deputy guerin goforth at a gas station near houston last night. goforth was in uniform when police say miles walked up to his patrol car and opened fire. detectives don't have a motive yesterday. goforth was a ten-year veteran of the force. he leaves behind his wife and

two children. well, ten years ago today the rains came, the levees broke and the city of new orleans was changed forever. a decade after hurricane katrina, it has been an emotional week for survivors of the storm. while they remember the devastation, they also rejoiced in the crescent city's strong recovery. but nbc's kristen dahlgren looks at how much more needs to be done. >> reporter: ten years ago water filled new orleans' ninth ward. >> scene being replayed throughout this city. ♪ >> reporter: today, a flood of people, survivors celebrating resilience. >> we're back, though. we're back. ♪ >> reporter: there was a wreath laying to honor victims who were never identified. a parade to show new orleans music and spirit are stronger than ever.

people were also doing what they have been every day since katrina, rebuilding. bernadine has only been back in her house for a month. >> i've been through so much. and finally 2015 was my year. >> i'm dedicated to new orleans. >> reporter: for felicia and scott washington, now living just a few blocks from the rebuilt levees, there are still fears. >> you can see the levees from here. do you trust -- >> i don't trust it. >> you don't? >> i do not. >> reporter: but like for so many, this is home. this is where hope lives too. >> i'm not going anywhere else and i love new orleans. there is nothing else for me. >> only on 4 tonight, soin som r before seen video. temperatures are going to warm up as we continue into this workweek.

it is the last weekend of freedom for some kids in our area. kids in montgomery county head back to school on monday. they had to get in a little bit of fun today. students got free health screening and immunizations to make sure seventh and eighth

popular hiking trails in burlington, connecticut, are closed after a close encounter with a bear. a hiker took this video friday afternoon and fgetting a lot of attention on our facebook page. some people are saying that the hiker provoked the bear cub. you can see the 150 pound bear pacing back and forth, nipping at her leg. wildlife officials became concerned after watching the bear's behavior. so now they're tracking the cub and say they plan to capture and euthanize it. open our app to watch the entire video. this is the last thing you want to see when you're out on a kayak, right? a shark fin moving out in the water. that's what some kayakers spotted off the coast of san diego today. it is a hammerhead shark, which the experts say are rarely a threat to humans. but after the eight footer got a

little too close for comfort, you could say, lifeguards decided to close the beaches. local officials out there are trying to track the shark to make sure it kind of gets out of the area before everyone gets back in the water. ten years ago today, the country didn't yet know the complete devastation of hurricane katrina. but it didn't take long for all of us to realize just how much damage this storm did. montgomery county firefighters witnessed the heart break first hand when they went down to help with recovery efforts. they just sent us this home video taken on vhs tape ten years ago. some of the footage has never been seen. we're working on getting more of the video into the nbc washington app. search katrina. we're so fortunate we have not had any sort of storm, anything like the one we saw there ten years ago. >> i can't believe that was ten years ago. >> i know. time flies. it is. >> pictures reload, all of that.

headlines. get ready for the warmth. it is coming. it is going to be here. might have felt it today. temperatures today made it up to 89 degrees. past few days we have been in the low 80s. shock to the system. you may have noticed that humidity a little bit more today as well. but the humidity will continue to stream in here overnight and in through much of the next workweek. we just have a small chance of rain, really not looking at much. temperatures now very comfortable outside. 75, again, may feel a little bit humidity and i think overnight and through early tomorrow morning you'll feel it even more. current temperatures sitting nice. 75 here again in d.c. 73 in winchester. 75 in leesburg. 73 in gaithersburg. a few clouds out there earlier. now we have clear skies and overnight lows, we're going to be more mild overnight. we're talk ing about 60s around 70 here in d.c. a little warm if you want to head to the farmers market, warm in the morning, then heat up quickly by noon. we're almost to 90 degrees. we'll be in the upper 80s. and you can see we'll be right

well, the redskins did it tonight. they won with a good win, a good game, but a lot of people right now talking about, you know, the situation with the quarterbacks and how did kirk cousins play and when will rg3 be back and i know a lot of questions came out

about that tonight. carol and jason live in baltimore tonight. hey, guys. >> kristin, pregame drama, all about rg3. the night belonged to kirk cousins and colt mccoy and redskins were happy. just because it is preseason, doesn't mean we can't celebrate the big win. >> offense put up some points and moved ballot do ed the ball field. they looked pretty good. let's look at the highlights now and show you how this all went down at the stadium. robert griffin iii not playing tonight. kirk cousins getting the nod. the offense made noise early. joe flacco, first drive of the game, hook up with steve smith sr., this is a 63-yard touchdown. baltimore takes an early lead. they're up 7-0. into the first quarter, 40 seconds to play. akin makes the catch, taken down hard here by inside linebacker keenan robinson.

the ravens not locking that tackle. big scrum ensued. head coaches getting into it. gruden and harbaugh ex-changing words. smith and culliver ejected from the game. into the hands of the rookie, jamison crowder, his first nfl touchdown. redskins first team offense finally gets on the board. trail 13-7. later in the quarter, more from cousins, this time to ryan grant, makes the guy miss, 26 yard game. ravens 1 yard line. cousins through for 190 yards, one touchdown and one pick. chris thompson would punch it in later and the skins have a 14-13 lead. ensuing kickoff, though, some trouble for the ravens or the redskins. jackson. either way, the redskins, they would win this one by a final score of 31-13 to win the third preseason game in the preseason

over the baltimore ravens. >> we have to talk about robert griffin iii, he was on the field for an hour going through his pregame routine. he was cleared on thursday and last night the neurologist reversed his decision, sitting out, recovering from last week's discussion. today's report, losing his starting job to cousins, head coach jay gruden addressing this after the game. >> through the protocol, get retested, end of the week thursday or friday and see how he's doing and make our decision then. we're all as confused as you are. people have to understand this has nothing to do with the redskins. people want to make it out we're incompetent, but we're not. this had nothing to do with us. it was an independent doctor, a verbal -- he said with our doctor, and then all of a sudden the written statement was different. the written report was different. so we followed proper course and did what we thought was right for robert and what the report
