charles counties are headed back today. montgomery county schools are also starting today. and the biggest district in maryland is a little bigger this year. news4's kristin wright is live at walt whitman high school with more for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. a record number of students in montgomery county, more than 156,000. as you said, eun, making it the largest school district in maryland. significant changes this year, one of them being the school start times. this is a big debate over the last several years. the idea that parents who wanted this wanted high school students to get more sleep. so the school board voted to make these changes in february and here they are. so high school students will start 20 minutes later this school year with school starting at about 7:45. middle school students also shifting their schedule, 20 minutes with most of them starting at 8:15. elementary school students in montgomery county will start at 9:00 or 9:25. depending on the school. that's about a ten minute shift.

now, also 800 new teacher, new educators in the school district this year. some of them replacing those who left. others are adding on for growth as we talked about earlier, adding on for growth in montgomery county. the district lost about 380 positions due to some budget cuts. now, the other big thing for families this year is new immunization requirements by the state of maryland. those are for seventh and eighth graders. of course very important. everybody has to have those before they come back to school this year. lots of change, lots of interesting stuff. stick with us through the morning. we'll bring you what else you need to know. >> thank you, kristin wright. also in maryland, charles county students are back to school but spring break has been shortened this week. they'll have free breakfast for all students next week to celebrate the growth of the free breakfast program over the last five years. and it's back to school

5:05. the so-called bicycle bandit will go on trial. wossen assaye was arrested in march and then sparked a manhunt after he escaped from the inova hospital. he has pled guilty to charges connected to the manhunt. he'll face the robbery charges in alexandria. in d.c. today, we will learn whether d.c. police officers have no confidence in police chief cathy lanier. the d.c. police union is putting out the results of a vote it held this weekend. it comes amid a huge spike in crime and the highest homicide rate in the city in years. the vote also came at the tail end of the latest all hands on deck initiative to limit crime. chief lanier said it may have influenced the vote with so many officers called in. she said, quote, when we have violent crime we have to make the sacrifices that we all swore

we'd make when we took this job. we have new numbers from the all hands on deck campaign. d.c. police say they seized 21 illegal guns across the city since friday night. they say they arrested 16 people for having those guns. earlier this month, chief lanier blamed illegal guns in part for the city's spike in crime. a live look at the capitol for you this morning. we'll tell you why you may see emergency crews or helicopters flying around. we're getting close to the end of summer. chuck bell is back with a first look at your labor day weekend forecast. she's not a hurricane but the remnants of tropical storm erika are bearing down on the southeast. southeast. the latest on her track and the

recovering from gunshot wounds in southeast washington. evidence markers covered third and "i" streets last night. d.c. police say both the victims should survive. officers have not made any arrests in this case. today, president obama heads to alaska for a historic three-day visit. he'll become the first sitting president to visit the alaskan arctic to bring attention to climate change. he'll land in anchorage later today. ahead of the visit, the obama administration changed the name of mt. mckinley yesterday. it will be called by the original name, denali. it means high one. horror movie lovers are waking up today without a legend. director wes craven died yesterday. he created the freddie kruger franchise. the nightmare on elm street movies. he really saw success years later for his work what the "scream" movies. he suffered from brain cancer. he was 76. you can wear maroon and orange today to remember one of

the victims of last week's on-air ambush. photographer adam ward's family says that he loved his alma whatter, virginia tech. a disgruntled employee murdered him and alison parker last week. a memorial service will be held later today. and it may shift to mental health issues and how we care for those struggling with them. the man who shot parker and ward admitted he wrestled with those issues. the station manager said he's working with state lawmakers to better identify how to approach this case. >> most mental illness is treatable. if we can get to the sufferer. in this case, we didn't. >> the service began with a video montage, a view of who ward and parker we are.

here you see them dressed up a and having fun during a live report. if you commute in maryland you know it can be rough on the roads out there. there's a new steady that agrees with you. maryland is the fourth worst state for drivers. the state made the list for the long commutes and high insurance rates. the good ns is that maryland has a very low deadly car crash rate. louisiana was the worst state in the country for drivers. in "news4 your health" this morning, talking to your kids about alcohol long before they take their first sip. a new report from the american academy of pediatrics shows nearly a quarter of kids say they try alcohol before their 13th birthday. you need to start talking about drinking by the age of 9. a time when most kids start thinking positively about alcohol. the report encourages pediatricians to question preteens about alcohol use. a new survey shows that alcohol and drug use is a significant problem among teens with chronic illness.

researchers surveyed a group of 400 children under the age of 18 with diabetes, arthritis, cystic fibrosis or crohn's disease. they found nearly a third used alcohol and 17% used marijuana. very few of the teens knew if the drugs or alcohol interfered with tests. and students in loudoun county going back to school, some will start in a brand-new school. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein outside river side high school in leesburg. how is it going out there? >> reporter: yeah, my brand-n brand-new -- i mean, we still have some construction cones around here. construction workers are doing the final finish up here of this brand-new high school, riverside high school in loudoun county. first day of school for loudoun county. over 70,000 students, hundreds of buses back on the roads in loudoun county this morning. here's the bus stop forecast. going to be kind of a muggy morning. we might have a few isolated

school officials about the start of the new school year. good morning. >> reporter: good morning again. well, we are here in prince william county, of course this is virginia's second largest school system and e newest school, patrick yung elementary school. it is named after a police officer who was killed in a car crash. vehicle crash back in 2012. this is one of the more innovative schools in the system here and it builds on some principles that we know about, that we hear about in education now. and we think that it will indeed advance that whole idea very -- in a good way as far as we could tell. joining me now is phil travis, the communications director. so first off, tell us what the issues are for the whole system as you start this new school year. >> of course we have the challenge of growth. we'll have 87,000 students this year and it's very exciting to have that many. but it's always difficult to keep up with that many new people coming in.

you can see, we're making it happen. >> reporter: indeed. this school is interesting. we all hear about the s.t.e.a.m., but this school is s.t.e.a.m., so what is that about? >> it's for the arts. science, technology, engineering and math is where people are headed in new careers but getting that creativity in there, getting the arts function into it really gets people firing on all cylinders. so that's important. >> reporter: and having the school named after someone who was a protector for this county is also special i imagine for the parents, teachers, everyone else who will be here this year. >> we had the dedication of the school the other night. it was so inspiring to see you was officer yung's family. >> reporter: well, the students will be here at 9:00 a.m., that's the bell time here. >> yes. >> reporter: we'll have more coming up later. derrick ward, news4. back to you. >> thank you. and you may see some extra police in leesburg today as loudoun county goes back to school as well.

the town says leesburg police officers and virginia state police will be out in force to keep your kids safe on the roads. they're targeting aggressive and distracted drivers and aggressive pedestrians all week. police say they'll be around hot spots all year. and a reminder, your child needs to have his immunizations before entering kindergarten or sixth grade or transferring into the fairfax county schools. there are extended hours at five clinics. get this done as early as 8:00 this morning. school starts next week. there's still time for the back to school hair cuts but if you wanted to get them for free you missed your window. stylists at alexandre de paris gave cuts to 98 kids yesterday. and we took some kids -- took some photos of our kids heading back to school. we want to show you our scholars. we want you to show us your scholars.

in a park in gaithersburg. montgomery county police say the public should not be concerned. they say a group of people was on a controlled deer hunt when they spotted the bodies at great seneca stream valley park over the weekend. in just weeks after another outbreak in new york city, we've learned there are new cases of legionnaires' disease in prison. 51 are under observation. the prison has limited water use since legionella bacteria grow and spread through water. inmates are being served boxed meals and bottled water has been brought in. we are learning more about the man who fell to his death at the baseball game. the braves held a moment of silence for greg murrey before the game. atlanta police say he fell over the upper deck railing at turner field saturday night. he was a braves season ticket holder for 23 years.

new this morning the car in your driveway could be attracting thieves. we got our hands on the new list this has the most common stolen vehicles of 2014. and there is a common thread here. we posted that list for you on the nbc washington app. in d.c., the 2002 dodge caravan was the most stolen car. that was followed by the 1996 honda accord and the 2000 jeep grand cherokee. the 2002 dodge caravan topping the list of the most stolen cars in maryland. the 1997 honda accord and the 2006 ford full sized pickup had the highest theft numbers. the '97 accord, followed by the pickup. the 2014 camry was the third most stolen car in virginia last year. the national insurance crime bureau released that list. >> not a lot of fancy cars and older models on the list. there was a high flying photo shoot in our skies this weekend, you may have seen or heard the navy's legendary blue
