yes, the fire is in lanham this morning. a town home, actually two. let me show you the scene. the fire has been out for some time, but firefighters still here cleaning up, making sure that everything is in fact out. we talked to one of the homeowners here and he told us that he was just about to go to bed this morning when a neighbor came and was knocking, knocking on his door. ringing his doorbell. telling him there was a fire. and he's very glad that that neighbor came and made sure that he was -- that he was okay. the damage is worse on the back. that's where you see most of the fire damage here. firefighters describing the fire to me really as not that bad. and looking worse than it actually is. they got the call at about 3:00 this morning. they came out and they put out the fire. the firefighter told me it took them 15 minutes to really get the fire under control. back here live this morning, this fire affecting two of the town homes here. firefighters told me that no one was actually home at one of the -- at one of them at the tiemd.

but then there was that homeowner who we mentioned who was about to lay down and go to sleep when a neighbor came and was knocking on the door and made sure he got up and got out. he heard the smoke alarm going off just as he was getting out, so the good news, everybody is okay. firefighters are trying to figure out what might have started that fire. the homeowner has no idea. right now, d.c. police say they want to speak with this man. he is a person of interest in the killing of the a.u. grad. police say 19-year-old andre dudley is a suspect in a burglary that happened in northeast on august 12th. this is surveillance video from that robbery. two days later, matthew shlonsky was shot and killed outside the shaw metro station. police have made one arrest in the murder but dudley is a person of interest in this case. at the live desk, a bad start for asian markets as the

stocks slump on first day of trading. this after china's manufacturing fell to the three year low in august. the nikkei was down more than 2% this morning and chinese and hong kong stocks in the red. it's raising new fears about the health of the economy and learning that u.s. stock futures are down 1.5%. that's the latest from live desk. aaron, over to you. thanks. 5:04 now. today, family and friends will say good-bye to photographer adam ward. he was holding the camera when vester flanagan shot him and he also killed alison parker. he killed himself after several hours on the run. look at ward's visitation from yesterday. his funeral will be later this morning. developing right now in georgia, a police officer is in critical condition after being shot while responding to the wrong house. police say they were responding to the call for a suspicious

person in a suburb of atlanta, but officers entered the wrong home and gunfire erupted. the homeowner was shot in the leg and his dog was killed. police are still trying to find out whether the homeowner fired any shots. officers involved in the shooting have been put on administrative leave. also developing this morning, another explosion in china. a chemical factor exploded overnight, killing one person. this comes nearly three weeks after that massive chemical warehouse explosion and fire that killed more than 150 people. this morning's explosion is still being investigated. well, you know it can be hard to find affordable housing in this area. and tonight a grown in arlington plans to protest at a county board meeting. they're planning to add more than 15,000 affordable housing units and the county has not been responsive to the concerns. another community fed up with rising rent prices this

time in takoma park, maryland. >> most of the tenants were given rent increase notices that ranged from $200 to $639 that we currently are aware of. >> now, that means rent today will cost some people at hampshire towers apartment 72% more than last month. we asked the complex owners about this too. they say anyone facing a 25% increase has six months to decide whether to move and they say that the tenant's association agreed to the price hike to pay for building improvements. in a statement, the owner said that the building was deteriorating with over 580 code violations and $3.6 million in needed repairs. it's 5:06. developing in decision 2016. a lot of hillary clinton's e-mails, more than 7,000 pages worth, are now public. the state department released all those documents last night. they're from clinton's personal

e-mail server she used while she was secretary of state. much of the content is heavily censored but the state department says none of the information was classified when clinton received or sent it. former virginia governor bob mcdonnell will not have to report to prison while the supreme court considers his appeal. it overruled a lower court decision which required the former governor to begin his two year sentence immediately. his lawyers will ask the supreme court to reverse his conviction or order a new trial. mcdonnell and his wife were convicted on corruption charges. the deadline is looming for a commission to look at how body cameras will be used. this is the second meeting and the big questions they're trying to answer -- when should a police officer turn off a camera and how will the departments store the video? coming up on 5:08 right now. schools in fairfax county start

tamekka fontanelle in her southeast apartment last month and is accused of shooting herb son and another boy after they argued. and a search is on for a man who may be responsible for two recent sex assaults. once on riggs road and then michigan avenue, a man threaten as woman with a knife, sexually assaulted her and rode off on a bike. the michigan avenue attack happened this past thursday night. officers want to remind you to be aware when leaving metro stations alone and using the nearby paths and bike trails as well. that's where both attacks happened. we know the arrangements for marvin mandel following his death a few days ago. he will lie in repose at the state house in annapolis. his funeral is happening in pikesville thursday morning. he was maryland's governor between 1969 and 1979. he was convicted of corruption in 1977. but that conviction was eventually overturned.

today, you can learn more about how d.c.'s mayor plans to cut down on homelessness. today, mayor muriel bowser will announce a new set of initiatives to aim at reducing the amount of homeless people in the direct. bowser wants living on the streets to be rare and brief. she is expected to lay out her plan at 2:00 today and that will take place at the department of housing and community development resource center in southeast. today, highlighting montgomery county for using cameras effectively. cameras have been studied in montgomery county since they were introduced in 2007. it found a driver going ten miles over the speed limit has dropped. now, if the model were instituted nationwide, iihs estimates 21,000 lives could be saved. you may be delayed around the capitol for another

along nicely. see you in ten minutes. the woman you may remember for driving her minivan into the ocean, her children screaming inside, is out of a florida psychiatric hospital this morning. a judge says state officials will monitor ebony wilkerson. she is taking medication for bipolar disorder. she was diagnosed after police say she drove into them -- drove into the waves along daytona beach in march of 2013. wilkerson says she feels much better now that she's getting treatment. her husband has custody of the four children. yesterday he agreed with the judge's decision. it is now 5:25. new details in the murder of a houston sheriff's deputy. the man charged in deputy darren goforth's shooting has a history of mental illness. court documents show shannon miles was declared mentally incompetent. and prosecutors say miles shot the deputy 15 times in an

unprovoked attack. investigators say they don't know the motive behind the shooting. today, the sentencing phase begins for a man convicted of killing three people at jewish centers in kansas city. a jury convicted frazier glenn miller jr. he raised his arm in a nazi salute. miller pleaded not guilty. he could receive the death penalty. this may bring back bad memories of the d.c. sniper. police are trying to figure out who is behind four shootings on the i-10 interstate in phoenix. a child was injured but is okay. the driver of the tour bus says he thought he had hit something. but when he stopped the bus he saw a bullet hole. >> i did a walk around. i'm like, that's a bullet hole. >> no one was on the bus when

state department last night. tracie potts and her team is going over the documents. she's live on capitol hill with what we're learning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. so what we're learning that sometimes secretary of state hillary clinton got frustrated when show couldn't get what she wanted when she wanted it. there's at least one e-mail where she says just send it already. but what she was talking about was information that had been at least part of -- one versiontion classified. there was some confusion about whether or not they could send it to her via e-mail. in another, she urges the readers to delete after reading. we are seeing e-mails about iran, russia, israel, haiti, cuba and another -- a number of other hot spots around the world. 4,300 e-mails in all. 150 that the state department says are now classified. that's an important distinction to make because as her campaign is going to emphasize at the time, that information was not classified. you can do this online, they can see they're heavily redacted, huge chunks and in some cases

we are also learning that by the end of the year, there will be a pedestrian activated traffic light at that cross walk. we are talking back to school stress in "news4 your health." parents, we're zeroing in on you. both parents and children have anxiety over the transition, but doctors say how you handle it matters. clinical psychologist donna rockwell says she says the parents struggle with it. >> i think the parents cry way more than the children ever are. at least that's been my experience. >> rockwell says that's okay as long as parents reassure their children, she says making this time of the year fun and being organized are the best ways about it -- best ways to ease the transition to change. the stock has closed out the worst month in years.

let's see how the first day of september looks, landon dowdy, good morning. >> well, the markets open well in the red after ending august with a thud. futures are starkly lower after china reported the company's manufacturing activity fell at the fastest pace last month. that's driving down asian and european markets today. oil prices are lower today after surging nearly 9% on monday on reports that opec may cut production amid signs of a -- signs of a drop in u.s. crude supplies. but it's the worst monthly loss since may of 2010. september may not provide much releaf it's historically the worst month of the year for stocks. and denny's loves the idea of a peace burger to promote the u.n. peace day later this month. it's supposed to be a combo of the whopper and flame burger, onion, lettuce, bacon, and a fried egg.
