right now at 11, applause for a 13-year-old girl who survived a shoot manage the district. a big turnout tonight from people who want to stop violence in her neighborhood. six police officers get their day in court in the freddie gray case. tonight what baltimore is doing to get ready for possible protests.

we hit high temperatures today of 95 degrees. but that's just the start of what could be one of the hottest streaks so far this year. here at the live desk, we're following developments in illinois where police are using everything they can to bring down three men suspected of killing an officer and stealing his gear. helicopters in the air above fox lake, an area about an hour north of chicago. all investigators will say right now is they're looking for two white men and a black man. tonight a memorial is growing outside the police department. people have been coming by to leave messages and other mementos outside the station. lieutenant charles gliniewicz was married with four sons. he was just about to retire. he was chasing the men this morning when he radioed in for backup. another officer rushed to the scene, but when he got there, the lieutenant had already been shot. the suspects got away with his gun and some of his other gear.

now officials had locked down a local high school. but tonight we're being told that so far it's going to be okay for the kids to go back to school in the morning. doreen? >> thank you. a big response down by the guy gaylord hotel. prince georges county police say someone walking in the area spotted the body and called 911 about 7:00 tonight. several departments responded on land and in the water. they found a man's body. we don't know his name or whether foul play was involved. leave is canceled tomorrow for all baltimore city police officers as that city prepares for possible protests. the first pretrial hear willing be held tomorrow for the six police officers charged in the death of freddie gray. the judge will hear arguments on three key issues. whether to try the six defendants together or simply. whether to dismiss the charges, which prosecutors don't expect, and whether to remove the state's attorney from the case.

>> the strategy here has been clear from the beginning. the police would like to remove miss mosby and her assistants and they would like to take the case outside of baltimore. >> gray died back in april, you'll recall, after suffering a spinal injury while in police custody. the judge is not expected to announce his decisions tomorrow, and the officers are not required to attend that hearing. tonight d.c. police are hoping you can help them identify this man. he is wanted for questioning in a sexual assault near a metro station. a woman was attacked last friday on michigan avenue northeast after leaving the brookland metro station. investigators are trying to figure out if the same guy is responsible for another rape. that victim was attacked near the fort patten station july 28. in that case both attackers were armed with a knife and took off on a bicycle. applause tonight for this 13-year-old girl who was shot near the waterfront metro station on sunday.

she and her mother joined other residents at a community advisory council meeting tonight in southwest d.c. they're concerned about the rise in crime in d.c., and want to know what is being done to keep them safe. >> and all the young people in the neighborhood. it's not just me, it's the elderly, the disabled that hangs around here. and lives around here. those interest ones i'm really concerned about. >> there have been 105 homicides in the district so far this year. there had been only 73 by this time last year. a 4-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital tonight after a car hit him in silver spring. chopper 4 was over the scene this afternoon near the intersection of georgia avenue and august drive, just north of the beltway. police tell us the driver stayed on the scene. we're still waiting to learn more about the little boy's condition. but fire officials say he is expected to be okay. turning to our weather now, and one of the hottest hot streaks we have had all summer. doug, how bad is it going to be out there tomorrow?

>> hottest hot streaks. i love that temperatures today got to 95 degrees. we've only been to 95 seven times, but we have not had three consecutive days of 95 degrees or higher. and i think that's where we're going. 95 today. 94 in hagerstown. 95 down there towards fredericksburg and 86 towards annapolis. very humid out there along the bay. hot and sticky all week long. and take a look. temperatures today around 95. i think we're back there tomorrow. up to 96 potentially on thursday before we come back down for the weekend. and that is some very good news. so the headlines tonight, of course we're tracking the heat. just how hot and how humid will it feel. the storm chance, there is the few. we'll talk about that, and of course the all important labor day weekend weather forecast. i've got it all for you coming up in just a couple of minutes. >> all right, we'll see you then, doug. thank you. we're less than two weeks from the next presidential debate. tonight cnn is changing the rules. that crowded field of republican hopefuls all looking for seats on the big stage this time around, and one may have just

opened up for carly fiorina. cnn now says only polls between august 6th and september 10th will be used to determine who makes into it the top ten. that means candidates who are polling better now than they were back in july could get a spot. remember, fiorina got a big boost from her performance in the smaller debate back in august. her supporters say she deserves a spot in the main event. the county clerk in moorhead, kentucky will have to go to federal court thursday to explain why she shouldn't be fined for contempt. county clerk kim davis stopped issuing licenses for gay and straight couples after the u.s. supreme court legalized same-sex marriage in june. two federal courts have since ruled against her, ordering her to do the job. and last night the supreme court refused to block those orders. davis can't be fired because she is an elected official. it's going to cost the federal government more than $130 million to protect those impacted by that massive opm

data breach. today opm announced the company id experts will provide coverage for the 21 million employees impacted. that means credit monitoring, identity monitoring, insurance for identity theft, and identity restoration services. employees will be covered for three years for free, but many want lifetime protection. opm will send out information of those federal workers impacted later this month. fairfax county students don't head back to class until next week. but you may see some school buses already out on the roads tomorrow morning. bus drivers are doing test runs this week to practice for the new school start times. the opening bell at high schools will ring 50 minutes later this year. fairfax county wants to make sure drivers are ready for later and heavier rush hour traffic. about 300 buss will do test runs each day this week. new tonight, a group of protesters is criticizing arlington county for its affordable housing plan. the group says it's limited to

one area along columbia pike. they say it will result in socio-economic segregation and no access to high achieving schools. the county board held a final work session on the plan this evening. demonstrator says the county officials are ignoring their concerns. >> in the past five years, one neighborhood has received approximately 50% of the affordable housing, and the other 60 neighborhoods have gotten the other 50%. this is wrong. >> public hearings on the affordable housing plan are set for september 8th and 19th. he has been called the people's pope. but today pope francis made another move that got catholics and the rest of the world talking. in a letter today, the pope ordered priests across the world to absolve women of the, quote, sin of abortion if they confess and are contrite. he called for this answer losing during the year of mercy that begins in december. today i talked to cardinal donald worrell here in

some incredible new video tonight out of california. check it out. it shows a construction worker surviving a steam pipe explosion there. he got blasted out of a manhole in santa clara county last year. he survived but suffered serious injuries and has not been able to go back to work. the county released this video. it's now suing the construction company for safety violations. tonight a man is back behind bars in fairfax, accused of robbing a woman at gunpoint at

an atm in tysons corner last month. but some wonder how this could happen. he was already wearing a gps ankle monitoring bracelet. tonight prince william county police say nothing went wrong with the bracelet they issued to john hudspeth, who was out on bond for two previous armed robberies. they say it was meant to track his whereabouts, not his activities. the victim says what good did it do? she said more should have been done to keep him from striking again. >> he yelled drop your phone. so when i turned around and looked, he has the gun on me. and then he was like empty your account. >> the victim thinks more should have been done to keep hudspeth from striking again. his bond was revoke and he is back in jail. a part of montgomery county got hit with loud opposition tonight. the rock springs section bethesda is home to marriott and walter johnson high school. neighbors agree it needs a makeover, but as jackie bensen reports, when they asked what that would mean for schools and

traffic, they didn't get an answer. >> what your plan seems to be is to take all our open green space here. >> we're not telling you what to do. we're listening to you to tell what's you want. >> why can't you tell what's is negotiable and nonnegotiable? >> education just one of the plans that you know the drill. >> reporter: they came home from work, fed the kids and drove to walter johnson high school to listen to montgomery county planners talk about their future. >> the school here is going to be a big problem. >> reporter: casey anderson, president of the planning board put it bluntly. the enormous rock spring office park area, home to numerous businesses, including marriott international no longer appeals. it has a nearly 20% vacancy rate compared to a countywide average of about 13%. >> it's also about wanting to have their employees be in a place where they're not stuck in the middle of an office park and trapped during the day with nowhere to go. so you have to get in the car

and drive 10 or 15 minutes just to cross the street to go to lunch. >> reporter: the planners pointed to mixed use, office, residential and commercial developments like the new pike & rose on rockville pike. then someone asked how the area's award winning schools could handle the increased capacity. things got heated. >> very little elementary school land has been dedicated, and no middle school land. >> i'm interested to hear first of all what people's initial impressions are. and secondly, i'm going to be interested to follow up on it and see what the follow-through is on the process. >> reporter: no matter what the final plan looks like, officials say it could be 25 years before they're able to effectively deal with the problems that led to all of these empty parking spaces. in bethesda, jackie bensen, news4. it's a big blow for uber and could affect similar businesses down the road. a judge in california will allow more than 160,000 uber drivers

to join a class action lawsuit. the original suit says drivers should not be considered independent contractors, but uber employees. the contractors classification protects uber if a driver gets in trouble. it also helps the company avoid certain taxes and health care costs. the judge says his decision does not reflect the merits of the lawsuit's claims. we've got some big news for a couple of fast food giants tonight. starting this fall, chipotle will deliver bure reit toes, tacos and bowls to college students. they're teaming to deliver on 40 college campuses, including the university of maryland, towson university and johns hopkins. and your 10:45 heartbreak at misdemeanor is almost a thing of the past. starting october 26th, breakfast will be available all day. the company will offer a limited number of all-day breakfast item including sausage burritos and hotcakes. mcdonald's hopes this change

will boost slumping sales. i'm suddenly craving a midnight snack. >> you never know when you need an egg mcmuffin. >> one of the healthiest things you can get from fast food. canadian bacon. >> i'm just saying. >> the hottest hot streak of the summer? >> the hottest hot streak of the summer. now not the longest, but we've only hit 95 degrees six times this today. today was number seven. if he we hit it tomorrow and again on thursday, that would be three days in a row of 95 degrees or better that would be during the hottest hot streak of the summer out there right now. a little bit on the hot side. 80 degrees. dew point of 73. so it's warm. it's humid across the area. and it's going to be that way again tomorrow. look at the numbers. 81 in leesburg. 73 towards culpeper and still close to 80 in indianapolis at this hour. 11:00, here the first day of september was a hot one. and we're looking at more hot weather. what we're not looking at is rain falling. and again, we really do need to see some rain. nothing on storm team 4 radar.

we'll see a slight chance tomorrow. that's about it. just a slight chance. we have an area of high pressure aloft. and that's helping to produce the warmer air. only a few clouds coming in. take a look what we're going to be dealing with. your commuter forecast tomorrow morning, just humid. 78 degrees with plenty of sunshine out there between say 5:00 and 7:00. hot and sticky. maybe an isolated shower at this time. but 91 degrees at that time after a high tomorrow back into the mid-90s. here is future weather. taking you right on through early tomorrow morning. tomorrow morning some cloud cover. what happens around noon? you know it's hot. notice the showers starting to develop back towards the mountain. that's where they will develop first. and we could see some come in along the i-95 corridor. i still expect most of these to stay to the west of the d.c. metro area. but now the computer model picking up. maybe something happening around 5:00, 6:00. something we'll watch. most of us will remain on the dry side during the day tomorrow. tomorrow evening, once the sun goes down, all of those showers get on out of here. high temperatures tomorrow back to 95 in d.c. 96 in fredericksburg.

92 in leesburg. 90 in martinsburg. just chance of storms back to the west of i-95. outdoor planner, 78 degrees at 7:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m., up to 87. so you me that lunch is going to be on the hot side. and 93 degrees by 3:00 in the afternoon. high temperature of 95. but heat index close to 100 tomorrow. easily 100-degree heat index. a temperature of 96. that would be near record high temperature there's on thursday. 90 degrees on friday. another chance of a shower or thunderstorm. but again, it's only 30%. and then we get into the weekend. and then we get into the weekend. a beautiful weekend. 84 on saturday. 86 on sunday. low humidity. very nice weather. labor day also looking good. a high temperature on labor day of 91 degrees. on tuesday, the humidity starts to come back. and so do our chances of a few thunderstorms. but all in all, after we get through the hottest hot streak of the season, we see a very nice weekend for that all important labor day weekend. a lot of people doing a lot of

pitcher joe ross had his troubles. only allowed one hit. walked four batters in the third. would be pulled with the 4-2 lead. bottom of the eighth now. a 5-3 game. drew storen on the mound. the bunt by greg garcia. storen fills it. but yunel escobar can't handle the throw. this game is tie at 5:00 in the ninth inning. let's head to baltimore now. the orioles commemorating the 20th anniversary of cal ripken's record setting streak of 2,131 of consecutive games play. he threw out the first pitch. he is not on the mound. he hurt himself in a biking incident this afternoon in which he flipped over his handlebars and landed on his throwing shoulder. true story. despite the pain, ripken all smiles as he took in what was truly a special moment for him. meanwhile, the actual game a nightmare for the orioles. pick it up in the top of the fourth.

bases loaded. j.p. drops that ball into left center. the rays go up 3-0. they put up four runs in the inning. it's now a 5-0 game. brandon guyer of herndon high school and uva gets a shot to deep left here off the wall. steve pearce bobbles it. a run comes in. the rays are up 6-0. 8-0 game. aaron again, he is your number nine hitter. he had himself a night. sixth rbi. the rays win this one, 11-2 the final. let's talk about the redskins now. robert griffin iii is no longer the starting quarterback of this team, and players on this roster are still dealing with the aftermath of what that move means. desean jackson has played with griffin for just one season. he came over from philadelphia after being cut. he understands what it's like to be told you're not wanted. >> you know, it's an unfortunate situation to be in, honestly. i have a good relationship with him. and he is a good guy. he does all the right things.

and, you know, it's just unfortunate he has to be in a situation like that. but this is the game we're in. this is the league we're. in it's the nfl. and the best advice i could tell him is just keep his head high and when an opportunity presents itself and he has another opportunity to play again or wherever it's going to be again in this league, i definitely think he'll do what he need to do to get it done. >> because of robert griffin iii's concussion, the redskins are in a tough spot when they take on the jaguars this thursday. griffin is not available to play because the tests that clear him for that concussion doesn't happen until friday at the earliest that means a full 60 minutes of colt mccoy with kirk cousins, your starting quarterback standing by in a meaningless preseason game in case of emergency. so cousins could play. but they hope not. the final preseason game right here on nbc4. redskins versus jacksonville. kickoff at 7:30 thursday night. be sure to stick around for the redskins postgame report with myself and carol malone.

president obama's staffers may be holding their breath tonight. the commander in chief is the one at the controls of the white house instagram account. he has taken some pictures of his three-day excursion to alaska and posting them for the world to see. on the way to hike a glacier today, he stopped by a local cafe where he bought them out of cinnamon roles. he reportedly did not order the
