g.i. joe. the veteran officer and father of four was shot and killed after calling for backup by three men he called suspicious. we know that schools are closed. we also know that the faa is sticking to a no-fly zone over the search area this morning. the story is developing. and we will continue to keep you posted throughout the morning. eun. today, we'll be live at the hearing of six police officers charged in the death of freddie gray. they're facing charges of assault, murder and for one, depraved heart murder in this case. the motions will have a major impact on their trial. the big one whether to remove state's attorney marilyn mosley from the case. officers believe she's biased against them. lawyers for the officers want the trial moved for that same reason.

they also want their charges dismissed. prosecutors don't believe that will happen. the judge will consider whether to try the officers together in one trial or separately. the trial is scheduled for next month. today, baltimore police officers are not allowed to take leave as there's several protests planned. several occupant groups said they plan to gather outside. courthouse. at least one group is calling for nonviolent acts of civil disobedience there. be sure to download the app to make sure everything stays peaceful. news4's mark segraves will deliver a report from the courthouse. you can speak directly to d.c. police chief cathiy lanier today. that is the third meeting like this in three days. this will be at the 5th police district at north d.c. the meeting starts at 7:00.

a 13-year-old girl who was shot near the southwest water front metro station spoke at last night's meeting. take a look here, she and her mother and a lot of other residents went to a community advisory committee meeting to talk to officers and city leaders. there have been 105 homicides in d.c. this year compared to 73 at this point last year. police in prince george's county are trying to figure out how a man's body ended up in the potomac river. the body was spotted last night around 7:00 near the woodrow wilson bridge. there's no word who the man is or how he died. we're working to figure out more. former governor mandel's body will try lie in state. a funeral service will take place tomorrow. mandel died on sunday. he was 95 years old. huge crowds expected here

for pope francis' visit next month. now, the federal government is making moves to make it easier for everyone to get around. news4's kristin wright is live at the basilica of the national shrine with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right, pope francis will celebrate mass here at the basilica three weeks from today. and you nome, his visit is obviously going to be very memorable, very meaningful for a lot of people. but it will also have impacts that will be a little more challenging. we're talking logistics here, really. this is the plan for federal workers. the u.s. office of personnel management just put out a letter to federal agencies yesterday, encouraging that they really treat the pope's visit kind of like a snow day. this is a quote from the actor director on the letter, opm encourages employees to telework or work from home, to keep the government operating while helping to minimize traffic and

6:15 now, developing this morning, the son of a baltimore police commander is in jail, accused of murdering his roommate. police tell the baltimore sun that melvin russell got into a fight with his roommate on monday and both suffered stab wounds. russell survived, the roommate died. russell is the son of lieutenant kernel melvin russell who leads the neighborhood's outreach

efforts. as court hearings begin in the officers charged with freddie gray's death. anthony betts will be part of the panel discussion tonight. batts was fired after a rise in crime following gray's death. the panel will follow accountability and racial issues in the justice system. a man is waking up in police custody this morning in fairfax, accused of robbing a woman at gun point. john hudspeth is accused of robbing a woman at an atm last month. but the twist in the story is that hudspeth was wearing a county gps monitoring bracelet. they say it was meant to track his whereabouts, not what he was doing. the victim says more should have been done to keep him from striking again.

war statue. county leaders recently built a similar revolutionary war statue. and many of you are not happy with plans to limit affordable housing in arlington county. a group criticized not happy with building one on colonial pike. they say it will have no access to high-achieving schools. demonstrators say county officials are ignoring their concerns. sweet briar college is making good on their payments. the payment is one installment to save the college in closure. the nonprofit formed after the former leader said the college would close because of financial challenges. friday, it will finally be back to school for several teachers in stafford county. they will be allowed into the brand-new high school at 8:00

nbc's john yang is in the small town of fox lake this morning where the community is dealing with a huge loss. john, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. we've seen a memorial spring up here outside the fox police station. as schools in four districts are closed as police press this search. 48 canine units involved. six air units. officers from local police in the area, from county sheriffs in the area. from the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and fire arms, the u.s. marshal service, the fbi, all hands on deck, as they pledge to go 24/7 until they find these three suspected cop killers. this is north a community under siege and on edge, this is a community in mourning. mourning the loss of lieutenant charles j. gliniewicz. a beloved member of the police department here for more than 30 years. a member of this community for

tuesday, september 22nd to thursday september 24th. this will definitely, i think, help a lot of folks. back to you. a new poll out just hours ago in advance of the pope's visit, it's about american catholic views on different kinds of families. the pew research center found catholics are largely accepting of nontraditional families. 87% of u.s. catholics said they're okay with single parent families. 83% say they're okay with families of divorced parents. and 66% say they would accept a family with gay parents. nine out of ten american catholics did say a family with a married mother and father is the most ideal. turning to meteorologist chuck bell now to talk about the heat wave. we're still talking heat wave in september, chuck. >> no kidding, we're only halfway through it. we've got today and tomorrow and maybe 90 as late as friday. even though the weekend is looking awesome, there's a chance for more 90s next week.
