quickly. >> chief cathy lanier talks about a historic synthetic drug bust in the district. how police caught on to this massive shipment. in the middle of one of the hottest weeks of the year, why these seniors are staying in an apartment lobby to keep cool. >> "news4 at 11" starts now. >> it is the biggest synthetic drug bust in d.c. history. and tonight chief cathy lanier says she has no doubt about where all this was headed. >> 19,000 pacts of bizarro, 265 pounds. new tonight, we can show you where that bust happened. news4's jackie bensen live where it went down off blair road in northwest d.c. jackie? >> reporter: we're told a police dog alerted on this at a shipping facility in howard county last thursday. but this storage facility were police found the drugs. they were in time to keep them

off the streets of district. 265 pounds of synthetic drugs labeled bizarro. more than $2 million worth of blueberry favored human misery, destined for the streets of district of columbia. >> i guarantee that that shipment that we got today, that was destined for the gas stations and the little variety stores all through this community. >> reporter: court documents reveal undercover officers watch this d.c. storage facility yesterday afternoon as two siraj issa and abera unloaded on to the second floor. the shipment originated from the west coast and could be the break investigators have been looking for in their efforts to get the drug off the street. >> we are committed to going after the synthetics wherever they're coming from. and getting at that source. i think today's bust sends a tremendous message that we're not going give up.

we have tremendous information coming in. so we're going to keep it up. >> reporter: one of the toughest things police say there is no tests for this. no easy quick test. so thanks to federal part next homeland security and the dea, they were able to test it real quick after the dog alerted on it last thursday and intercept it before it was distributed on the streets. live in northwest, jackie bensen, news4. back to you. here at the live desk, we're keeping an eye on the manhunt for suspected cop killers in illinois. for the first time, hearing from the widow of one of the officers killed. [ applause ] hundreds of people cheered melanie gliniewicz as she poured her heart out surrounded by her sons. she thanked people from around the country who had been praying for her family. right now investigators are going through hundreds of leads, surveillance video. they've got nearly 50 police dogs trying to find a scent. they even have officers going door to door to look for clues.

lieutenant gliniewicz radioed for backup when he went after the suspects, but in less than 15 minutes they had been shot and they were gone. tonight his widow described what he meant to her. >> joe was my best friend, my world, my hero. the love of my life for the last 26 1/2 years. >> she said her world just got a little smaller, and unfortunately she is not alone. four police officers dead in the last nine days alone. and in this case, officers say they're not going to stop. and one tip can break this case wide open. >> thank you. new at 11 tonight, a scathing report about the way police responded to unrest in ferguson, missouri last summer. the justice department says it's a lesson in how not to handle protests. this report adds to a draft version released back in june. it details police orders that inflinged on first amendment rights. military-style tactics that antagonized protesters, and an

ineffective communication among the more than 50 law enforcement agencies that responded. officials hope this report will help other departments avoid making the same mistakes. peaceful protests outside the courthouse in baltimore today. the first pretrial hearing was held for the six officers charged in the death of freddie gray. the judge refused to drop the charges against the officers and refused to remove the prosecutor from the case. but the judge did agree with defense attorneys that the six officers should be tried simply. >> and the one thing that is significant i think for the citizens of baltimore is that he said he feels that we can find jurors right here in baltimore. >> defense attorneys are asking the case to be moved out of the city. the judge will hear arguments on that next week. our september heatwave is making things tough tonight on dozens of seniors living in maryland. their air conditioning went out during one of the hottest weeks of the year. shomari stone is at the charter house in downtown silver spring with their story.

shomari? >> reporter: well, talk about bad timing. it is an absolute mess out here. some of the residents tell me they have been sweating over the past 24 hours. it is so hot that i sometimes take this washcloth and wipe my forehead. nothing to what they're experiencing inside the building. >> it's just miserable. it's just miserable. >> reporter: denise norris is sleepless in silver spring. >> it's been uncomfortable. i woke up in the middle of the night, and just hot, sweaty. >> reporter: she lives in the charter house, an apartment building that houses seniors. it hasn't had air conditioning since yesterday. some residents try to stay cool in the lobby. >> 97 degrees outside. we're in an apartment with no air. >> i'm a diabetic, for one thing. and since i've been in this building three or four times i've been taken out of here because my sugar dropped low because it's so hot. >> reporter: arlington housing corporation manages the building. tonight an official admits crews accidentally turned off a water valve connected to the building's ac, causing the ac to

malfunction. what is going on with the air conditioner? >> well, right now what we're doing, ahc is doing a major pipe realigning throughout the entire building. this has been going on all summer. and so what we are almost at the end of that project. >> reporter: this evening they set up temporary ac. >> we have been providing since yesterday water here in the lobby, fans on i think nearly every floor. and then finally today we have brought in two other contracts, air conditioning specialists. and they were able to identify a temporary solution. >> reporter: these folks want a permanent solution. and denise norris wants to get back in her kitchen. >> there is no such thing as cooking. it's too hot. >> reporter: indeed, you have the stay out of the hot kitchen. crews are expected to come out tomorrow to permanently fix the air conditioning unit. as for the folks here, they tell me they plan on waiting. and the people here at charter house tell me they apologized

for any inconvenience. live in silver spring, i'm shomari stone, news4. >> shomari, thanks. that heat is not going away. doug, what can we expect tomorrow? >> it's going to be another hot day as we make our way through the areas tomorrow. high temperatures today right back close to where they were yesterday. yesterday 95 degrees for a high temperature yesterday. 94 in d.c. 94 in warrenton. 94 in fredericksburg. 93 in camp springs. now some of us, some of us did see at least some rain during the day today. even some heavy downpours, especially right back towards the west, back towards winchester, towards lure ray, even parts of fairfax county saw some rain. if you did see it, count yourself lucky. the rest have been very dry. we need to see some more there is nothing out there right now. coming up over the next couple of minutes and at 11:15, the heat continues the storm chances. we'll talk about those. and what about the all important labor day weekend weather? i've got that as well. >> doug, thank you. hey, if you're hoping to snap a picture of yourself with pope francis during his

individual, you'll have to do it the old-fashioned way. the secret service is banning selfie sticks from the pope's events in philly. a similar ban could be put in place for d.c. during his visit. meanwhile, the federal government is asking agencies to telecommute during the pope's visit to washington. road closures and crowds will make for a tougher commute. pope francis will be in d.c. september 22 through the 24th. articling officials think they have the answer to managing on-street parking during peak times. but it could cost you. at a community meeting tonight that. >> want to extend the time that parking meters are enforced by two hours. that means drivers would have to feed the meters between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on every day except sunday when they're free. right now meters are enforced between 8:00 and 6:00 in arlington. the proposal will be presented to the county board on october 17th. the teachers are moved in. now all the elementary school in arlington needs are students.

news4 has learned kids can report for class next tuesday on time. a few weeks ago, we showed you delays in construction that had parents very worried. the school system says the building will be ready for the first day of school. there are reports tonight that a white house aide accused of shooting her boyfriend has resigned. role call reports that she submitted her resignation. she was put on leave after she was indicted on first second-degree assault charges. she was a special assistant to the president. there police say bijon brown shot a man while she was sitting on a metrobus on elvins road in southeast. they're looking for brown tonight. metro wants to take buses off of elvin road after the shooting last month. but after a public outcry, the transit agency changed its mind.

police offirs are now patrolling that area 24 hours a day. the v.a. wait list saga continues. tonight an internal watchdog report shows the department of veteran's affairs has nearly a million pending applications from vets needing to be seen by a doctor. the applications go back nearly two decades, and about a third of the applicants are likely dead. in fact many of them may have died years ago. but due to, quote, serious problems with enrollment data, it's impossible to say whether those 300,000 or so veterans actually died while waiting for care. the report also says the v.a. workers incorrectly marked many applications completed, and many important transactions may have been deleted. next at 11 -- >> the most incredible thing in the world. >> a new treatment for parkinson's disease getting tested here in maryland. how it got one patient running down these hospital hallways.

tonight they try to pull king over this morning here because his motorcycle didn't have a license plate. they said he sped off, ran a red light and crashed into two cars at parkland drive and aspen hill road. a south florida police department has a beef with arby's after a uniformed officer was flat-out denied service. last night sergeant jennifer martin went through the drive-through in uniform during her shift. one employee refused to serve her because she is a cop. the story hit social media, and the ceo of arby's issued an apology. but the pembroke pines police union says that's not enough. they want the ceo to apologize to every cop in america. tonight a 3-year-old girl is recovering from a devastating fall. five stories from an apartment window in bailey's crossroads. fire investigators responded to the skyline towers apartment complex here about 8:30 last night, that toddler fell more than 50 feet. first responders found her alive and rushed her to the hospital.

>> five stories, that's pretty incredible. >> yes. apparently some shrubs and some branches happened to break the fall. >> the fire captain also says people with young children can install window guards to protect their kids. and keep furniture and other items that children could climb on to away from windows. it's rare that medical researchers see immediate results when they try a new treatment. but doctors at the university of maryland medical center are very excited about a possible breakthrough treatment for parkinson disease. it's called mri-guided ultrasound. first an mri gives doctors an upclose view of the brain. then ultrasound waves are sent through part of the brain that is connected to parkinson's tremors. kimberly was the first person to receive this experimental treatment. and the results amazing. she was able to walk and even run right after the treatment.

>> it is just absolutely the most incredible thing. it's turned back the clock for me. you know, i have a new lease on life. i can do things that i wanted to do. it's a blessing. >> no pain, no surgery involved with this treatment. but patients do feel some intense heat. it is still not known how long the results may last. but some tests have been done on people with tremors. and those treatments are holding up even a year later. so exciting. >> yeah. >> so our hot heatwave continues? >> yes, it does. tomorrow, yesterday, 95. tomorrow 95 again. so yeah, heatwave very much still in effect. and i think we'll get there again during the day on friday. high pressure around 90 degrees. today we saw a few showers and a couple thunderstorms. and once again, count yourself lucky if you saw it. it might have affected you a little bit if you needed the umbrella today. but man, we really need to see

more rain. 78 degrees currently at the airport. dew point at 70. it is warm and it is muggy. 70 in martinsburg. 68 in culpeper. lure ray down to 68 degrees. one thing we're seeing now that we could see overnight is some fog in some areas. if you saw rain in your region, you may see some fog. so heads up in those locations. no rain to talk about right now. storm team 4 radar is all dry. and we should stay that way during the day tomorrow. at least most of us. sunrise tomorrow 6:37. 7, 8:00, warm, around 77 degrees. maybe some areas of fog in the western suburbs. hot tomorrow afternoon. sunshine, maybe an isolated shower. but mostly dry tomorrow and hot with that 95-degree temperature between 3:00 and 4:00 here is what is happening. we did see the storms develop. they're all down towards the south right now. another area back to the west of somewhat unsettled weather. but this right here you kind of see the line of clouds that will help to increase the heat again tomorrow and help to bring us

some storms during the day on friday. tomorrow morning, no problems. once again, a little bit of fog early. and then by noon, starting to see some cloud development. and maybe a couple of isolated showers 4:00, 5:00, 6:00. notice most of the areas on the dry side. i don't think you'll need the umbrella tomorrow, if any showers do happen, they'll be quick and out of there within about 15 to 20 minutes. friday morning, no problems. friday afternoon, a few more scattered showers and storms. and i think a better coverage of storms during the day on friday. high temperatures tomorrow hot, 95 d.c. 96 in fredericksburg. 90 in martinsburg. best chance of storms once again back towards the mountains. but they could even move a little farther to the east. that's something we'll watch out for. outdoor planner, 83 degrees at 9:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m., as most of the kids are hitting recess, going to be 87 degrees there too. they need to be drinking the water. 91 by 1:00. and once again, i mentioned 95 degrees for a high temperature tomorrow. we still get to 90 on friday with the 40% chance of showers and storms. and then cold front moves

the orioles walk-off winners. davis, he gets mobbed at home plate. the orioles, their six-game losing streak finally comes to end. they'll take this one by a final of 7-6. earlier in the day, the redskins held their annual welcome home luncheon. for the first time, robert griffin iii spoke publicly since being benched. rg3 was awarded the salute award for his involvement with the military community. griffin lost his starting job on monday. and there is now speculation he could be cut or traded away. today he got a standing ovation as he approached the podium to make brief comments. here is a little what griffin had to say. >> in the military, the one thing you have is your word. when you give your word to somebody, that means you're going to follow through. and i give my word to my family, to the redskins, to my teammates and the military that i'll always be there for them. i appreciate you guys. >> all right. a couple of backups will battle it up against the jacksonville jaguars, the final preseason game tomorrow on nbc4.

elementary in district heights, maryland this morning. in total, more than 3,000 will be given out this school year thanks to your generosity. you can still donate, by the way, to help kids start the year off right. go to our facebook page to find out why. a beluga whale stole the spotlight during a news conference with connecticut governor dannel malloy. the governor addressed the crowd in front of juno's tank today. bad idea. he was there to talk about tourism and travel over labor day weekend. but the whale was busy playing to the crowd, even pressing his face against the glass. and, you know, it's not the first time juno has been playful with aquarium visitors. he has interacted with a mariachi band and a sketch artist too. the governor is clueless about the scene that is unfolding him him. that's funny. we'll all want to be swimming tomorrow. it will be so hot.
