the weather headlines for today, only an isolated chance for a shower or a thunderstorm today. good news is we will be cooler just in time for the holiday weekend. 75 now in washington. 73 in leesburg. 63 in culpepper. hometown forecast, kemp springs, maryland, prince george's county, 73. maybe a chance of a thunderstorm later on today. but don't count on mother nature to cool you out. at metro today, a major meeting, the board and safety committee are discussing the derailment near the smithsonian station last month. this is first time they'll speak publicly about what happened. adam tuss is live with some of the big questions they'll be talking today. good morning. >> reporter: that's right, aaron. you know, how could a track problem where the rails were out of alignment gone undetected for a month? how could metro continue to let

trains whisk people on board and roll across the tracks? those are the questions we'll get answers to this morning. remember, the track problem was actually detected in early july near the smithsonian station, but nothing was done about it. then the derailment happened in early august. metro conducted an investigat n investigation, found out that an employee mistakenly deleted the information that identified the track problem. two people so far have resigned because of this, but there's still a whole lot of safety concerns. trains are rolling slowly in numerous locations because of safety issues that were identified after this derailment. problems that metro says it has to fix immediately. metro has to answer to safety oversight officials about this. we're expected to hear more about it as the metro board meets at 10:00 this morning. >> adam tuss, thank you. developing this morning, a new report from the justice department says the police

response in ferguson, missouri, should be a lesson in how not to handle mass protests. the report details the poor relationship between the ferguson community and police that led to weeks of violent demonstrations after the death of michael brown. it found arbitrary use of police force, snipers and police dogs for crowd control. several agencies have made significant changes. molette green at the live desk. no new leads in the manhunt for a cop killer. we have learned more about a woman the sheriff's officer said flat out lied about seeing suspicious men near a cornfield. she works as a nanny. called in this fake sighting to get attention. but dozens of officer, k-9 units scrambled in the area because of this lie. now it ten -- now veteran

officer charles gliniewicz was shot and killed after following three suspicious men on foot on tuesday. back to you. hundreds of people turned out to remember the life of charles gliniewicz last month. his wife spoke saying the town lost someone special. gliniewicz's four sons stood by her as she spoke. you can check the nbc washington app later this morning. we'll be posting the latest on the kentucky county clerk who is headed to federal court today. kim davis could be held in contempt of court today. she's refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. this even after the supreme court dismissed her appeal that doing that would violate her religious beliefs. davis could go to jail for her actions. today she and he lawyers are planning to ask for more time to argue their case. 6:04 today. a funeral service will take

place in pikesville for marvin mandel. he will be buried at the lake month memorial gardens. friends will be welcomed at his former home later on today. he was 95. it is the biggest synthetic drug bust in d.c.'s history. police seized 19,000 packets of bizarro, worth about $2.3 million. those undercover officers watched two men unload 14 boxes from a shipping service and then load the drugs into a storage locker in northwest d.c. yenework tefera abera a cab driver from alexandria and siraj issa, a grocery store worker from northwest d.c. were arrested. they face up to 20 years in prison. police have a named suspect in a shooting that caused metro to consider changing one of the bus routes. police say bijon brown shot a man while he was sitting on a metrobus last month on elvans road. metro temporarily stopped the

bus routes after 7:00 p.m. but that decision was reversed. police officers are patrolling the area 24 hours a day. we'll have to wait another month to find out what the parking rules in arlington are changing. we told you about transportation officials proposing adding two hours to the parking meters. they held a public meeting last night and they'll present their proposal to the arlington county board on october 17th. if new rules are approved you have to feed meters between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. monday through saturday. 6:05. a lot of tickets still available for the redskins final preseason game. that's happening tonight. the 'skins are taking on the jacksonville jaguars. you won't see kirk cousins, but instead colt mccoy is expected to start. the 'skins have not lost a game in the preseason so far. for coverage, check out everything on nbc4. our coverage begins at 7:30 and

the quinnipiac poll just released moments ago found 18% have a very favorable opinion of him. 48% favorable. and we want you to see the popularity he has among protestants. 61%. among those with no religion, 63% have either a very favorable or favorable view of this pope who was set to make his american visit in just weeks. now, close to half, about 43% of all americans say the catholic church is moving in the right direction that's the latest from the live desk. his poll numbers may be dropping a bit, but a lot of people are expected to arrive in droves with their cell phone cameras when the pope arrives in washington. you should probably leave your selfie sticks at home though. the secret service has already banned selfie sticks and drones from the pope's event in philadelphia. we could see a similar ban here in washington.

pope francis is in d.c. from september 22nd to the 24th. today, mass will be held to celebrate the start of the academic year in the upcoming visit of pope francis. catholic university president john garvey will call on students to pray in preparation. mass is at 12:10 at the basilica at the national shrine of the immaculate conception. >> we have to wait until next week to find out if six baltimore police officers charged in the death of freddie gray will be tried in baltimore. during a series of hearings yesterday a judge refused to drop charges against the officers. and denied a motion to remove the prosecutor, marilyn mosby. but the judge did rule that the six officers should be tried separately. he also said he feels jurors can be found in baltimore for the trials. the man in charge of the officers says the police officer quote took a knee after the riots following freddie gray's death. former police commissioner anthony batts made the comments

last night. he suggested that that may have cost him his job. a former state department employee is expected to assert his fifth amendment right not to testify in front of a house committee on capitol hill. brad pagliano helped hillary clinton set up her private e-mail server. he is being called to testify on benghazi attacks in 2012. the committee is expected to hear from clinton's former chief of staff later this morning. we could soon learn whether or not donald trump will sign a pledge not to mount an independent presidential bid if he doesn't win the republican nomination. the republican national committee chairman will meet privately with trump today in new york city. the rnc has challenged each republican candidate to sign that pledge. some republicans fear a third party run by trump could hand the white house to the democratic nominee.

more tough news coming out of the rick perry campaign. the former texas governor has no paid staff in new hampshire. this is the latest in a string of blows for perry. he failed to gain traction in the polls and missed the cut for the first primetime republican debate last month. we may learn how a baby boy died in alexandria. officers went to the bragg towers extended stay hotel early yesterday morning after a report of a baby boy in distress. an autopsy will be performed only the baby. we are told that the baby died a at a nearby hospital. a man remains in critical condition this morning in montgomery county after crashing his motorcycle while trying to avoid police. 27-year-old ronnie king, jr., was driving his motorcycle without a license plate. montgomery county police say they tried to pull king over yesterday. they say he sped off, ran a red light and crashed into two cars at parkland drive and aspen hill road in aspen rill. today, terry mcauliffe will

be in stafford county to hear your concerns about education. he's hosting a round table for parents. it's happening at brook point high school. if not invited you won't be able to serve on that panel today, but you can still go to the meeting. this is one of eight events happening throughout the state this fall. in maryland, these students at concord elementary school in district heights will be heading to school with now backpacks today. they received the backpacks as part of our backpacks for kids campaign. this year, nbc4 has given more than -- given out more than 3,000 backpacks to help students across our region and we're glad to help out. >> thank you for your support as well. today, veterans and military spouses could head to a job fair in the district. it is happening at nationals park. more than 70 employers with jobs available are expected to be there. this will be the first nats expo. hiring our heroes has held it since 2012. more than 500 veterans have preregistered for the event and it kicks off a 8:30 this

morning. another embarrassment for the redskins today. general manager's wife is apologizing for a tweet she sent. it was about espn reporter and former news4 sports reporter diana row seeny. at first they denied she sent the tweet and now she says she did. she put out a statement, saying i deeply apologize for the disparaging remarks about the espn reporter on my personal twitter account and my comments in no way reflect the opinions or attitudes of the organization, and i regret that my behavior has in any way negatively impacted the team and the loyal fan base. espn stands by their reporter and was disappointed by what happened. five soccer can players from a small private university in washington state are suspended this morning after a picture was posted online of the women dressed in black face. one of the students posted this picture on instagram and twitter. the group was dressed up as the

"news4 your health" this morning, new numbers from the centers for disease control about when children are diagnosed with adhd. the new report says children are 7 years on average when diagnosed. the cdc says family members typically report the symptoms but in a third of the cases teachers are the first to say something.

thunderstorm coming our way by mid to late afternoon. your rain chance is at 30%. hour by hour temperatures 73 at 6:00 a.m. 90 by noon and today's high near 93. eun, back over to you. >> thank you, chuck. right now, police in prince william county are looking for a man who exposed himself to a teen age girl. news4's megan mcgrath has the latest. what's going on? >> reporter: well, eun, it's certainly a disturbing story. a 17-year-old girl was walking to the bus stop right around 7:00 in the morning when this happened. let's take a look at the map to give you an idea of where we're talking about here. this was near the intersection of savannah drive and woodway place in woodbridge. the teenager was headed to school and when she got near a wooded area, right near the

intersection, a man exposed himself to her and made obscene gestures. there was no physical contact, he did not come towards her, but certainly disturbing nevertheless. police were called. they searched that wooded area. but they did not find the man. now, people are asked to be on alert, to walk in groups if at all possible. and certainly to report anyone who seems suspicious. megan mcgrath, news4. 6:32, a frightening situation for a 3-year-old girl who is recovering after falling five stories from an apartment window. that toddler fell more than 50 feet in baileys crossroads. this happened about 8:30 last night. she was not badly hurt. a fire captain said she was able to break her fall on some trees and branches. a white house aide accused of shooting at her boyfriend has resigned. roll call reports that barvetta singletary put in a notice on august 28th and the white house received. she was put on unpaid leave three weeks ago after being indicted on assault charges.

her boyfriend worked for the capitol police. today, the union station and tsa and amtrak are all talking about your safety on the rails. jeh johnson is holding a news conference at union station at 2:00. the head of the tsa and amtrak's chief of police will be there as well. they're talking about the safety and security efforts all three agencies are working on right now. this morning we're working to find out what charges will be filed against the woman accused of trying to kidnap a toddler from the stroller on metro train. witnesses say metro riders jumped in to stop the woman as she tried to grab the 2-year-old girl. the passenger subdued the woman until the melissa arrived. the child and more are okay. the heat is tough for a lot of seniors in maryland. their air conditioning went out during one of the hottest weeks of the year.

arlington house manages the charter house. crews made a mistake and accidentally turned off a water valve causing the a.c. to break. >> and since i have been in this building three or four times i've been taken out of here because my sugar drops so low because it's so hot. >> last night they set up a temporary a.c., water in the lobby and fans on every floor. residents are pushing for a permanent issue. supervisors in stafford county are calling for an independent auditor to look over how the schools are spending money. the calls came after the school system ended the last fiscal year with an unexpected $9 million left over. supervisors said more transparency and possibly a new way of budgeting are needed. no decision has been made about how to spend that extra money. arlington county schools has said discovery elementary school will open on time.

this despite construction delays. we have confirmed this now. your students will be able to report to discovery elementary next tuesday when classes begin. the teachers moved into the classrooms the other day and they're getting ready now. a unique summer exhibit at the building museum is only around for one more day, but you can be part of helping to find a new home for it. the beach installation closes tomorrow. but "the washington post" reports that 750,000 plastic balls that make up that exhibit are being donated to the dupont underground project. the challenge is getting all those balls moved so the dupont underground is asking for volunteers to pack them up in boxes and carry them to the art space under dupont circle. volunteers are needed next monday and tuesday. >> a very popular event. a kentucky clerk at the center of the same-sex debate is due back in court in the next few hours. her legal team's new strategy

metro headquarters right now with a preview of what's expected to happen. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. throughout all of this the question has been about metro's safety culture. is the metro doing what it can do to keep you safe and that's legitimate considering what happened here. when you consider that metro found a track problem in early july near the smithsonian station where the rails were actually out of alignment. but they didn't do anything about it, and then a train derailed a month later. even more incredible to think that metro allowed trains to continue to roll across that section of track for a month with riders on board. now, luckily no passengers were on board. the train that did derail, only the operator, he was not hurt. but the metro board is going to meet here today. one of the things they'll be told is that a metro employee mistakenly deleted the information that pointed to the track problem. so far, two people have stepped down from metro. there have been calls for the chairman of metro's board of

directors to step down. we expect a feisty debate as the board meets at 10:00 this morning. back to you. >> thank you. 6:55 now. we have to wait another month to find out whether the parking rules in arlington county are going to change. we told you about that public meeting last night where some transportation officials proposed adding two hours to the county's parking meters. they say they'll present the proposals to the arlington county board on october 17th. if the new rules are approved you would have to pay those meters an additional two hours 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. monday through saturday. new details now about the heart breaking v.a. scandal. a new internal report shows the department of veterans affairs has nearly 1 million pending applications from vets needing to be seen by a doctor. the applications go back nearly two decades, and about a third of the applicants are likely dead. many of them passing away years ago. but due to quote serious problems with enrollment data, it is impossible to say whether they died while waiting for care.
