and we continue to talk heat across the area. not just here, but up and down the east coast. i will show you how long that heat is going to stick around. first that deadly hit and run in alexandria and a development that happened in the last few minutes. police have just reopened the busy braddock road right there at commonwealth avenue it had been shut down since this morning when a woman was hit in the intersection. northern virginia bureau chief, julie carey is there live now. what are you hearing? >> reporter: this accident investigation took a long time this intersection closed down for six hours. now, look right behind me. see that crosswalk? it was just past that crosswalk where the victim's body was found. witnesses say that it appears that a large truck they describe it possibly as a dump truck struck her this morning and kept on going. dozens of officers and investigators came to the scene after witnesses called 911 around 9:20 this morning. we do not yet know the i.d. of the victim or whether she lived in this neighborhood.

i'm told the impact of the crash was so great, she was killed instantly. here's how one witness described it to a neighbor who lives nearby. >> she said she heard someone yell "hey, hey, call 911." i just called 911 and she came around the corner from her garden and saw the woman in the street and i guess the truck was still driving at that point and from what i had heard, they didn't know if the truck knew it had hit anybody but i don't know if that's the case. >> how did -- how did they describe the truck? >> just so big that it might not have known that it had hit someone. >> reporter: so police still looking for that hit and run driver at this hour. we, as i mentioned, don't know the identity of the victim yet. she did not have much i.d. on her but police told us that we may know who she is in the next few hours. coming up on news4 at 5:00, the knot in the stomachs of a lot of the people who live around this intersection, worried that this could be a friend or neighbor. back to you now. >> thank you, julie. we are going to stay in virginia where a plane sprung a leak at dulles airport.

chopper4 flew over hours ago after a jet started leaking fuel as it tax sid down a run watch maintenance crew arrived and cleaned it up. passengers and crew had to get off the plane. the airport wasn't impacted. police searched the home of a man considered a person of interest in his estranged wife's murder. you can see officers going into david black's home in the aurora hills neighborhood. black's two young children found his estranged wife, bonnie, dead in her home in the same neighborhood about four months ago. investigators today seized two bicycles. black has not been charged. the hunt is on for the gunman who terrorized workers at a pharmacy in montgomery county. he stormed into this drugstore in clarksburg in the middle of the day. news4's shomari stone is live there you have been talking to the clerk and the owner. what are you hearing? >> reporter: chris, the clerk and the owner tell me that they are absolutely scared. i mean, here you have a man coming into the pharmacy behind me and he is pointing a gun at the employee and the pharmacist.

right now, montgomery county police are searching for him. and several schools here in clinton administrationburg, maryland, were on lockdown about an hour and a half during the manhunt. let's show you the surveillance video. the owner gave it to us in hopes of catching the suspect. he hopes that someone can recognize him, it shows the masked men dressed in a striped, blue, long-sleeve shirt, khaki shorts, tan shoes, with a black backpack over his shoulder. he calmly walks into the thrive integrated pharmacy here in clarksburg, pointing the gun at the two employees. he forces him on the ground. they put up his hands. he seems to know what was looking for on the shelves and he stole a variety of medicine, including prescription painkillers and walks out. here at 5:00, you will hear from one of the employees. she actually has her hands up and listens and does exactly what the man told her to do and she shares her scary story. live here in clarksburg, i'm shomari stone, news4.

a hazy and hot afternoon in the mid-atlantic. we are also tracking a f ing ii showers and thunderstorms. chief meteorologist doug kammerer leads our coverage alongside veronica johnson in the storm center. >> another hot day across our region, currently sitting at 95 degrees at the airport, three days in a row close to 95. really hot. and have showers and thunderstorms on the radar, but not the coverage we had yesterday or the intensity with these storms. the heaviest storms in through portions of southern maryland. you notice the radar mostly on the clear side, what we have been talking about the last couple of days. most of us would stay dry, but seeing shower activity now in and around the d.c. metro area, especially southern maryland. zoom in on charles county. notice the lightning here around the charles -- the charles county/st. mary's county line, around mechanicsville. extreme prince george's county, calvert county and up toward the north, around the clinton area, we have seen a lot of showers around the oxon hill region toward clinton and upper marlboro, another shower just to the north and east of marlboro.

now, i want to show you what's causing this, a little boundary helped by the bay breeze here. look at these showers developing along this line so we could see more of these over the next couple of hours. and there's actually new little line developing just off to the west, maybe mount vernon, waldorf, see showers there i mentioned the temperatures. how about this? 95 degrees right now at the airport. that heat index, close 100. i will show you when we see some cooler weather and comes in time for the weekend. guys? >> thanks, doug. human error, what they are calling it. we are learning a lot more about why a metro train derailed at the smithsonian station last month. metro held its first public hearing on the derailment today and learned a metro worker pressed a button on a device designed to evaluate track conditions. in doing so he deleted an important warning, possibly before he even read it. metro track workers failed to notice something wrong. the board of directors slammed metro officials and said there are serious concerns about the agency's culture of safety. transportation reporter adam

mandel was remembered today as the architect of modern maryland. mandel died sunday at the age of 95. his funeral was this morning in pikesville. it draw many of the state's political elite, both past and present, and from both political parties. flags across maryland will fly at half-staff until sunset tonight in mandel's honor. well, angst and anger in philadelphia this afternoon about a change in plans for pope francis' visit later this month. the secret service announce there had will be a ticketed area reserved for philly parishioners closest to the venue. the tickets are free but the reserved area puts others five blocks away from the pope. the loaders of a group traveling from iowa is now wondering if it will be worth making the trip. >> we are finding out at the 11th hour that this event is not actually going to be open to the public and that we are -- there is a pretty good chance we are going to be so far removed from the main area that the pope is saying mass, it's questionable whether it's even worth it for us to make this pilgrimage.

alexandria are looking for the person who was driving a truck that hit and killed a pedestrian this morning. it happened not far from the braddock road metro, the busy intersection just reopened a short time ago. northern virginia bureau chief, julie carey, joins us live at the top of the hour. right now the man behind a drugstore holdup that kept several local school kids inside is still on the run. surveillance video shows the robber at the clarksburg pharmacy around 10:00 this morning. he forced two workers on the ground and stole prescription medications. still ahead, one of those employees talks to news4 about the scary experience. prosecutors in south carolina will pursue the death

penalty against dylann roof. he is charged with killing nine people in a bible study at mother emmanuel church and prosecutors called roof's actions the ultimate crime that deserved the ultimate punishment. roof is also facing federal hate crime charges. in illinois, authorities say they now have a video that could help them identify the three suspected cop killers who are still amount run. the video is from a resident's home security system and allegedly shows three people near the scene of tuesday's killing in fox lake. it's been turned over to the department of homeland security. coming up in the next half hour, more on the arrest of a woman who gave police a false lead. some students are looking over their shoulders as they head to school in prince william county. >> that's after reports that a man exposed himself to a high school girl as she walked to the bus stop in her woodbridge neighborhood. news4's megan mcgrath has more on what's being done to keep everyone safe. >> reporter: hilton high school students waited for the bus under the watchful eye of a

school security officer as well as a county cop. having learned what happened, denise mcland decided to walk her sister to the bus stop. just never know. anything can happen and safety the number one priority. >> reporter: parents and students are on edge after a man exposed himself to a 17-year-old girl yesterday. it happened around 7 a.m. as the teenager was walking to the bus stop. police say the man was standing near a wooded area not far from the intersection of savannah drive and woodway place in woodbridge. and while did he not approach or touch the teen, the man did make obscene gestures. >> it is a little bit -- >> reporter: ryan catches the bus at the same stop as the victim. she is happy to see the added security. >> feel a little bit safer, obviously, all the security here, nobody is going to come mess with us, then again, police isn't always going to be here it to protect us. >> reporter: the school system wants to make sure that parents next actually what happened and they have sent a note home with students, not just at hilton high school, but at other area

grounds. the vote follows naacp and community concerns about the monument to confederate soldiers standing there now. democratic lawmakers in virginia are pushing for more gun control following the killings of those two journal t journalists last week. northern virginia legislators unveiled a petition with nearly 3,000 signatures in arlington today. the move likely means the political battle for universal background checks in the next lidge slatetive session. right now in virginia, private sales are not subject to background checks. a new troubling report says there are 1 million veterans with pending health care application and one-third of them play is died, according to the veterans affairs inspector general. va workers may have incorrectly marked or deleted more than 10,000 applications over the past five years. they say data limitations prevent them from determining exactly how many now-deceased veterans applied for health care and when. critic says this business process has not been managed

little bit more pleasant. temperatures will come down, still a little bit on the humid side but pleasant as far as where we've been the last few days, the weekend looking quite nice out there. coming up, veronica is going to have the latest, that seven-day forecast for you coming up in just a few minutes. take a look at, this the hurricane is causing a high surf along the shores in hawaii. some waves are as high as 18 feet, attracting a number of surfers. the high surf warning is in effect though and could be extended if another hurricane moves closer to the islands. the tallest mountain in north america not only has a new name, turns out it's shorter than what we thought. alaska's peak used to be called mt. mckinley, now din nally, measuring 20,310 feet at its highest point, ten feet less than taken in the 1950s but today's climbers are using technology they didn't have back then. president obama changed the name this week while he was in alaska, it's what natives have always called it. it means "the high one "".

once again, from the bay breeze. i think as early as 1:00, we could see some scattered showers, thunderstorms around the area, then a better chance tomorrow with the actual weather front that will start kick nothing our area around 3, 4:00. so, they will be everywhere popping tomorrow afternoon and they could be pretty strong and hefty as we even get into the late evening hours, produce some moderate to heavy rain and some lightning across the area. tomorrow's one of those days also, again, where we could see maybe a severe thunderstorm warning or two issued. culpepper, fredericksburg, even up to the north could be some heavy cells coming through our area, but again, early tomorrow morning, it's looking dry. foggy in sports, 75 between 7 and 8 a.m. by the 9:00 hour in the morning, warm, muggy, sticky, back to -- the kids are going to want to wear their short sleeves and short pants heading to school. here is the rain chances, start as early as 1:00 tomorrow afternoon. a 30 to 40% chance, highest during the late afternoon and during the evening hours, by 10:00 that chance of any rain will really curtail and come

three suspects who are suspected of killing a police officer in illinois. investigators have had little to go on in their search for the suspects and their efforts were wasted last night when a woman phoned in a false lead. reporter michelle relford has more on the elaborate story she made up and the trouble it caused. >> reporter: 30-year-old kristen kiefer in bond court this morning charged with felony disorderly conduct and falsifying a police report. police say she intentionally misdirected valuable police resources hunting for the three suspects who killed lieutenant joe gliniewicz to get attention. >> any knowing false information that either obstructs or in any way thunder investigation is going to be taken very seriouslism. >> reporter: prosecutors say wednesday night, kiefer called fox lake police and said she had a lead in the search for the cop killers and that she was having car trouble and pulled over along route 12 south of route 120 when two men, one white, one black, approached her car and asked for a ride to wisconsin. one tried to open her door and

wondering who it was they found lying there on commonwealth avenue today. sources tell us that that truck driver that has been identified as being involved in this deadly hit and run is a woman, a woman who worked at a nearby construction site. now, police have not yet named the victim and that leaves residents in this area wondering, is it a neighbor that they knew who was out walking or jogging when winn she was killed? just outside the crosswalk at busy braddock road and commonwealth avenue, the victim's body was hidden by a tent. it was around 9:20 this morning when she was struck by a large truck that kept on going. this is what a witness told her neighbor. >> she said she heard someone yell "hey, hey, call 911." i just called 911 and she came around the corner from her garden and saw the woman in the street and i guess the truck was still driving at that point and from what i had heard, they didn't know if the truck knew it had hit anybody, but i don't know if that's the case. >> reporter: investigators spent six hours at the scene reconstructing what might have happened. the force
