near 70 in the shenandoah valley is. low to mid 70s in the moets metro. patchy fog, blue ridge, 84 by early this afternoon and a risk of showers around by the friday evening that rain chance may sneak into early tomorrow as well. area wide, mostly mid to upper 80s. a live look at 95 in virginia this morning as you can see right now traffic should not be too bad. you see some head lights out there, but thousands of you will hit the road today. heading unto the holiday weekend you can expect some company. news4's megan mcgrath is keeping an eye on the bay bridge traffic this morning. good morning. how is it looking? >> reporter: good morning, eun. it looks terrific right now. i went through with my e-zpass and had no problem.

these are folks coming across the bay bridge, headed to the eastern shore. they are running at speed. we're not seeing two way traffic on the westbound stretch yesterday. that will start when the traffic starts to build. we are seeing people traveling across in the eastern direction on the one eastbound span. looking good so far. this is of course going to be a very, very busy weekend out there on the roads. 1.8 million people are going to be traveling for this long holiday weekend. and many will be taking the bay bridge. if you're going to be crossing the bridge, if you're going to the beaches, the advice here is to leave before 10:00 this morning. if you can't do that, you don't want to sit in traffic, leave after 10:00 tonight. if you're headed out on saturday to the beach, leave before 7:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m. and of course, check the news4 app we'll be providing travel updates all weekend long. so hopefully you'll get where you need to go without too much trouble. but right now, everything is looking great at the bridges. we'll keep an eye on it and give you updates throughout the morning. back to you in the studio.

>> all right, megan, thank you. hey, you can find out today where the cheapest place is to fill up in the district before you hit the road. the cfo office will release a gas report later today. according to -- according to aaa right now, the average gas price in the district is $2.68 a gallon. in maryland the average is about $2.34. if you live in virginia, you're paying about $2 a gallon. around $2.50 in west virginia you may want to give yourself extra time if you're flying for the holiday weekend. more than 62,000 washington area residents are expected to fly. lines at reagan national, dulles and marshall are likely to be long. that's because of tighter security measures put in place. the extra security comes after a report earlier this year revealed hundreds of security breaches at u.s. airports. you may see more bomb sniffing dogs while you wait in line. aaa says get to the airport early and be patient. your best friend is the nbc washington app.

stay up to date with the latest travel alerts and traffic updates to keep you moving. when i came out -- when i found out, that he was -- he wasn't breathing. just laying there and not breathing. >> an investigation continues this morning into the death of a 5-month-old baby boy and why the nearest ambulance was so far away. a woman who told news4 she was his aunt says the little boy's name was trequan. we know it was a d.c. fire truck that started taking him to the hospital. the first ambulance dispatch was seven miles away from the home on hillside road in southeast. d.c. fire officials say paramedics arrived in four minutes and they asked for the ambulance from neighboring prince george's county but after finding out there wasn't one available, chose to drive the baby to the hospital themselves. the child's aunt says the boy had asthma and lived in a hot apartment. >> the house is hot, it's hot in

here. >> a closer d.c. ambulance eventually met up with the fire engine roughly 15 minutes after the call went out. by then, the infant was in critical condition and did not survive. d.c. fire and ems are promising to get to the bottom of the response. a developing story at 6:05. a county clerk is behind bars after refusing to smus marriage licenses to same-sex couples. a federal judge sent kim davis to jail for contempt of court. she said in court her conscience wouldn't allow her to issue the licenses to gay couples so she stopped issuing them to everybody. her deputies, most of them have agreed to follow the court's order. the couple is suing davis for not issuing the license will tie the knot today. gabe gutierrez will have more on this story. virginia lawmakers are in a battle that affects every voter in the state. "the washington post" reports democrats and republicans have until today to suggest names for

an expert who will help redraw congressional districts. last year a court found the existing batteries concentrated black voters in one district. lawmakers have not been able to redraw a map both parties agree on. today, d.c. mayor muriel bowser will kick off the second annual alleypalooza. it will make repairs to 64 al y alleys in the wards. it will begin at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow is decision day for the redskins. the team has to cut down the roster to 53 men from the current 75. last night's final preseason game will likely play a role in the decisions. it was a 17-16 loss to the jaguars but it was also a chance for young players to prove themselves. among them making it hard on the coach was wide receiver ross.

police say it's an isolated incident but they still have not found the shooter. classes are scheduled to go on as normal this morning. this morning a texas sheriff's deputy shot and killed while pumping gas will be laid to rest. the funeral will be held for darren goforth at noon. he was gunned down in what the police called an unprovoked and senseless ambush. shannon miles shot goforth 15 times and has been charged with capital murder in the shooting. an update here. only single tracking blue, orange, silver lines between eastern market and federal center. everything else has cleared up. chopper 4 over the outer loop at colesville road, getting jammed here as you approach georgia because of the crash that's off to the right side of the roadway now. travel times, 270 southbound, no problems there. top of the beltway, outer loop, you can see a little slower than it normally is because of that accident there. that chopper is over for us this

americans to come back to the u.s. sacramento is planning a parade for stone and his friends. 6:15 now. one of metro's top officials is not on the job. james dougherty has stepped down. he was drilled by the transit authority's board of directors over a derailment near the smithsonian station last month. we are learning that a metro employee hit a wrong button and deleted critical track safety information. metro admitted the track inspection process has to get better and promised to review its policies. the national search underway right now for a new chief safety officer. it's 6:16. in the day ahead you can learn more about the status of the new police station in prince george's county. it's set to open in october or november. you can address any concerns you have about the opening. that meeting will be at 7:00 in the potomac landing elementary

school cafeteria. rushern baker came under heavy pressure to staff the new station after reports you saw first on news4. six new officers will be on hand once the police station opens. baltimore's former police commissioner is facing backlash this morning over his remarks that officers quote took a knee after rioting in the city. kevin davis said that officers are disappointed with that comment. he pointed to an increase in gun seizures as proof they were working hard. batts said his comments weren't directed at him. britain announced it welcomed new migrants, this is an about face from david cameron who refused to accept more people. this does little to ease the crisis and chaos in hungary

where we are watching a train stranded. most want to keep traveling on to germany. that's the latest. back to you. >> thank you. 6:18. right now, police in illinois are searching for the three suspects who are wanted for killing a police officer. the manhunt for lieutenant joe gliniewicz's killer could have an effect on the holiday weekend too. tourists are steering clear of a popular boating and fishing area in the state. there are fears the suspects could be hiding somewhere in that area. the lieutenant was shot and killed earlier this week as he chased after those three suspects. and this morning arlington police are examining possible new evidence in a four-month-old murder case. bonnie black was killed inside her aurora hills home in april. yesterday, officers searched the home of his estranged husband, david black. this is not first time that they have searched his home. miss described him as a fern of

interest in the -- a person of interest in the murder, but he's not been charged with anything. black said he's innocent. today we hope to learn more about why a helicopter made a hard landing, killing a marine. 11 others were also hurt when the helicopter made a hard landing at camp lejeune in north carolina. that happened on wednesday during a training exercise. about 20 marines were participating in that training that requires them to exit through the back of the helicopter, using suspended ropes. a louisiana national guardsman killed in a helicopter crash will be laid to rest at arlington national cemetery today. staff sergeant was among those killed back in march. the army initially denied the request to bury him at arlington because he didn't die in active duty but recently approved an exception. a mother in prince george's county is furious this morning after a bus driver let her two sons off in the wrong neighborhood. it was a kindergartener and a seond grader.

the two brothers both attended barack obama elementary in upper marlboro. tuesday night the 7-year-old boarded the wrong bus and the older brother was let off miles away from home. the younger one was allowed to get off the bus alone. a violation of school policy. a good samaritan ended up picking them up and taking them home. here's what the mother says the school system told her. >> we have to see the video footage to see if his mouth is actually moving, telling the bus driver he doesn't live there. >> now, that was not the response the mother said she wanted. prince george's county schools tells news4 it is trying to understand what happened before any disciplinary action is taken. around 60 boat owners will be forced to find new docks now that the budget point marina is set to close. the national park service announced the closure yesterday. they said it would cost too much money to modernize the marina. the boat ramp will be upgraded and the park will stay put for now. boat owners have until the end

the same panel. your complaints have prompted d.c. water to significantly reduce a new fee that could have doubled some water bills. we broke the story earlier this week that d.c. water would charge about 2,000 between $40 and $80 a month. but last night the board voted to cap it at under $10. >> the consequence did not seem fair due to the water use statistics we were able to delineate. >> the higher fee primarily targeted newer homes where the size of the water lines are bigger to support required sprinkler systems. the new fee will show up on bills in november. pope francis will be here in the u.s. in less than three weeks now. you may have a shot to snag tickets to see him while he's in philadelphia. organizers are setting aside an additional 10,000 tickets for each of the events. there will be two papal parades in the city. he arrives in d.c. on september 22nd before he travels to new

molette green at the live desk. look at this video just in. a 65-year-old man on shore. the latest shark victim -- shark attack victim off australia's southeastern coast. you can't see it here, but the leg and foot are bandaged up. serious injuries after a shark took a bite while he was surfing north of sydney. he fell in after the mauling but managed to get back on his surf and to shore. this is the latest in a spate of shark attacks there this year. back to you. on the roads look at this, chopper 4 over the top of the beltway.

back in 2010, it said the only place you'd more likely to get into an accident is 14th and "u." this is the heart of mary cheh's ward. she'll be out later today to talk about this issue. she will be with some pedestrian and cycle advocates as well. now, the city has adapted what they call a vision zero program. that is trying to get the city's traffic fatalities down to zero by 2024. it's something that started in sweden and taken hold, but it's data driven. one of the concerns that mary cheh is concerned about there's a lot of anecdotal data. when the bars let out it's a lot more challenging and at the morning rush it's more challenging. that's when the officials will be out here to talk about that. we are live in georgetown and at a crossroads of pedestrian safety. back to you. >> derrick, thank you. it is now 6:34. happening today, a 20-year-old

whom police say tweeted he would purge all the white people in la plata, maryland, will face a judge. hollins will be in court for a bond hearing today. the account that posted the message on wednesday looks to have been deleted. some people didn't go out shopping that night as the threat spread online. a group of northern virginia lawmakers is pushing to expand background checks for gun buyers. this comes more than a week since two journalists were shot and killed on live tv. a group of democrats has the petition with 2,800 signatures. right now, private sales including those at gun sales aren't subject to background checks. the local chamber of commerce in roanoke raising money for the woman who survived the on air ambush. they want to build a new garden in honor of vicki gardner. the chamber president said that she has had this vision for a

long time and they want to make sure it happens. ohio state is joining virginia tech in honoring journalist adam ward and alison parker. tech announced it will wear helmet stickers with the number 7. a tribute to where they worked. now ohio state says it will do the same thing. the buckeyes plan to show their solidarity with the hokies in remembering the victims. the teams play each other monday day night. prince george's county is looking for ways to cut costs in the fire department. that includes reassigning a dozen firefighters, four will come from the riverdale heights station making that station entirely volunteer staff. bowie and accokeek will also have firefighters reassigned. parents are worried about the kids walking through a wooded area to get to school. it takes some a mile and they have to use the trail. a group of parents on that street is asking for the bus

new this morning, three new crew members about to board the international space station. their soyuz spacecraft arrived early this morning. they're about the open the hatch now. they raise the population there now to nine for the first time since 2013. that will only last a couple of days though. the soyuz is set to return to earth with three crew members in a week. we're about to learn what went wrong at the texas hospital that treated an ebola patient last september. thomas eric duncan was first to be diagnosed with the virus in the u.s. the hospital wasn't prepared. the review says duncan's travel to liberia wasn't verbally communicated to the physician and the review says that the

recent high profile incidents involving d.c. fire and ems. a 77-year-old man collapsed across the street from a firehouse. no one inside helped him and he later died. the firefighters on duty were disciplined but the lieutenant in charge was allowed to retire with her full pension. a year earlier this year a 1-year-old boy died from choking on a grape. in that case the closest ambulance was not sent and a fire lieutenant was charged with neglective duty. developing right now in california, police are searching for a gunman who shot three people on a college campus. police say an argument in a parking lot at sacramento city college escalated last night. one person is dead. at least two of the victims are students. police say this is an isolated incident. they haven't found the shooter. classes are scheduled to go on as normal this morning. 6:49 now. police in missouri say an 11-year-old shot and killed a teenager who is trying to break into their house. st. louis police say the

11-year-old was home alone with a 4-year-old when the teen and another person tried to get inside. once they made it inside police say the 11-year-old shot the 16-year-old intruder in the head. the mother of the shooter says she bought the gun for protection. police are not saying whether they plan to charge the 11-year-old in the shooting. today, virginia lawmakers are once again up against the deadline in the battle that affects every voter in the state. "washington post" reporting democrats and republicans have until today to suggest names for an expert who will help redraw congressional districts. last year a court found the existing boundaries concentrated black voters in one district. the lawmakers have not been able to redraw a map both parties can agree on. we're watching wall street as we wait to see how it will react to the august jobs report. cnbc's landon dowdy is live with that story for your money. good morning. >> hey, eun, good morning to you. well, investors are taking a cautious approach ahead of today's u.s. jobs report.

futures are lower this morning and asian and european markets are also in the red. stocks ended mixed on thursday giving up strong early gains. analysts expect 220,000 jobs were added to the economy last month. although august does tend to be quirky, the job numbers can be inaccurate as many people are on vacation when the government conducts the monthly survey. the unemployment rate is expected to jump to 5.2%. that would be a seven year low. >> all right. >> yeah, thank you, landon. some tough decisions for the redskins. they have to cut the roster to 53 by tomorrow. the young players had their last chance to prove themselves last night in the final preseason game. it was a 17-16 loss to the jaguars, but head coach jay gruden says players including ross who caught the fourth touchdown of the season are making the job hard. >> see how it turns out. >> we hope we win games.

hefding -- heading into the holiday weekend. megan mcgrath is keeping an eye on the bay bridge for us in maryland this morning. it was not so bad earlier, how is it looking now? >> reporter: it still looks good. but you can see we're starting to see a little bit of hazy fog. if you look at the head lights those are the folks coming across the bridge to the eastern shore. the traffic is running at speed. no delays at the toll booth. actually a perfect time to cross the bay bridge if you're headed to the beaches this weekend. and a lot of people are. now, the advice from transportation officials is get across the bridge before 10:00 this morning. if you can't do that, then wait until after 10:00 tonight. now, just historically, traditionally, we start seeing the traffic backing up around 11:30, 12:00. especially in the area of the receive wren river bridge. it goes from four lanes of
