students as police hunt for a gunman. into the lion's den. a man scales a fence at the national zoo. we have the photos and the story all that want to see, first on 4. but we start the labor day weekend with some afternoon storms, downpours of lightning strikes flaring up on what has been another sticky september day. meteorologist veronica johnson is in the storm center tracking the radar. hey, vj. amps little busy this afternoon a few severe thunderstorm warnings already and a slight chance that we could see another warning or two issued. here's what's going on. i'm monitoring a couple areas now the one warned earlier, prince william county, as far as fauquier county as well, up to the north and east, around delaware, there could be another batch moving in. this storm around fairfax just went up. and another one around warren. but this is the area through warrenton right now with some lightning on it. i think if there's any other area that gets warned on soon it maybe culpepper county. i'm going to keep a close eye on

this area as these storms press to the south and west, very slowly again, 10 to 15 miles an hour, on toward locust -- dale and ashburn area. if you are going to be traveling, the weather will have a moderate impact on area roads for the evening, overnight. we get better by early tomorrow morning. we will have your beach forecast coming up. >> thanks, vj. now to that developing story in northern virginia. a 17-year-old high school student shot and killed in sterling. police say the gunman opened fire at east cornell drive and north duke drive as the victim walked to the bus stop this morning. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey has been working the scene all day long as officers hunt for the shooter. >> an unthinkable tragedy here in the first week of school, a 17-year-old boy was walking down that street around 8:30 this morning on his way to a school bus stop nearby when shots rang out. he was hit, three suspects fled on foot. the suspect's backpack marked the spot were he fell to the ground.

he was rushed to the hospital where he later died from his injuries. the team was a sophomore at nearby park view high school. it was on lockdown all day and five other schools were on lockout status, meaning no one could enter. initially, the sheriff said residents should be on high alert with the suspect still at large. but this afternoon came word there was no longer any public danger. residents in this quiet townhouse complex were shocked to hear the gunshots. at the same time, kids were gathered at the bus stop and adults headed to work. i was sleeping about that time and i just heard, like, around three shots. my husband just went to his car and grabbed some stuff, then he said that he was -- young man just shot right there, you know, by the office. >> coming up on news4 at 5:00, what investigators think might be the motive for this fatal shooting. in sterling, jewely carey, news4. a local family is grieving the loss of a wife and mother in that deadly hit and run in alexandria. police say a construction truck driver hit and killed deborah ann bogart yesterday afternoon

at braddock road and commonwealth avenue and kept going. bogart was 60 years old. investigators found the driver late yesterday in prince george's county. we are told charges are pending. this is the aftermath of a motorcycle crash that killed a man in montgomery county this afternoon. chopper4 over the scene just after 12 noon in the aspen hill area. you see the bike just in pieces. this is at norbeck and westbury roads. the car that hit the motorcycle did stay on the scene. police haven't released the victim's name yet. and we are working to find out more about a deadly discovery in southeast d.c. this morning. a man's body was found in a park near the intersection of martin luther king jr. avenue and malcolm x avenue. right now, police aren't releasing the victim's name or able. park police are taking the lead in this investigation. new clues have surfaced in the shooting death of an illinois police officer. authorities say they have received several more videos from residents an businesses. they hope the footage will offer

a break in their search for three suspects. they are still on the run. there is also a $50,000 reward now. police lieutena the police lieutenant was killed 45 miles north of chicago in fox lake. the probe into a hell couldn'ters a hard landing that killed a marine from virginia could take weeks or months. 31-year-old staff sergeant jonathan lewis died at camp lejeune yesterday during a training exercise. he was from fauquier county and based in norfolk with an anti-terrorism security team. 11 other marines were also hurt in that hard landing. two are still in the hospital. d.c. police are investigating a reported sex assault. a woman says she was forced into a vehicle at gunpoint along m street southwest on tuesday. she says she was driven to anacostia park in southeast and sexually assaulted. police are looking for a silver dodge ram pickup with temporary tags. the district's second alleypalooza is under way across

the city the program is a push to repair 64 alice in all eight wards. today's goal, repair cracks, potholes and other problems in eight city alleys. alleypalooza two is scheduled to last through early november. serious talk today about making major changes to one of the area's most dangerous intersections. news4's derrick ward shows us the biggest concerns about m street and wisconsin avenue, the intersection at the heart of georgetown. >> reporter: of the city's ten most dangerous intersections, this one is number seven. as you can see, even when you've got a cross signal, this cross town traffic is trying to turn that you have to watch out for. change is coming but it will take some time. we are trying to overlay a 21st century multimodal transportation system on what has already been built and may not easily accommodate, you know, the new way of moving around. >> reporter: of all of the changes that are planned, none are budgeted right now, but they hope that by bringing attention

to the perilous situation here, things will speed up a bit. in georgetown, derrick ward, news4. i'm melissa mollet with your first four traffic for this labor day weekend. we are talking track work here. red line trains every ten to 20 minutes is what they will be running on metro this weekend. orange and silver line, blue line as well, those trains running every 26 minutes this weekend. this we are talking about this different schedule for the weekend, from 10:00 friday night until monday, the end of monday. yellow and green line trains will not be affected this weekend, but on monday, trains going to be operating on a sunday schedule. i hope you have great holiday weekend. for many, labor day weekend is now well under way. you're looking live at the chesapeake bay bridge there as traffic is headed out to the coast. more than 850,000 people in the washington area are expected to travel further than 50 miles from home. many will be driving, with gas prices expected tonight lowest for labor day, um, in about a decade.

lightning to little lightning, an indication that these storms are starting to weaken in intensity. i think if there is any area to watch, it will be here, fauquier to culpeper, these storms press off to the south and southwest right over 522 toward rutgersville. so the rain intensity forecast between 5 and 6 p.m., there could be some pockets with heavy rain on area roads. by 6, 7:00, more moderate rain that we will be seeing, we will be faring better as we get into the late evening, early part of the night. some clouds around for saturday, but beach locations i think looking just fine, upper 70s to low 80s by labor day. what about right here in town, if you're sticking around? we have got your labor day forecast coming up. >> thanks, vj. this afternoon, we are hearing from the husband of the kentucky clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. rowen county clerk kim davis snail jail on contempt of court charges. davis said issuing you licenses

team coverage with chief meteorologist doug kammerer and veronica johnson just minutes away. but first, a photo obtained by news4 shows a man taking a dangerous walk, breaching the enclosure of the lion's den at the national zoo. fortunately, he didn't get down into the enclosure and close enough to where the lions could attack him, but it did cause quite the stir at the zoo on a very busy afternoon. i'm darcy spencer at the national zoo where a man was able to climb inside the lion's den earlier this week. it was a scare here at the zoo. he was able to climb up over this fencing and walk up here along this barrier here at the lion's den. fortunately, authorities were able to grab him, get him to safety. he was then taken for an emergency psychiatric evaluation. so, what was this man thinking and what are zoo officials doing about it? i will have the story coming up, news4 at 5:00. the saudi king is in washington. he met today with president obama at the white house to talk

about the iran nuclear deal and other issues that affect the middle east. this is king solomon's first visit to washington since ascending to the throne back in january and as we reported at midday, his entourage and his accommodations are attracting a whole lot ofhfagw attention. the four seasons in georgetown has rolled out the red carpet and gold decor. the king and his entourage are reportedly occupying the entire hotel and we are joined now by politico reporter kate bennett who is following the royal visit. kate, welcome. good to see you again. >> good to sue, too. >> walk us through this visit, really taking up the entire hotel? >> that's what i hear, the hotel won't confirm because it's a guest situation and they are very private, but you know, two days ago, people started seeing these carts of gold furniture being wheeled into the hotel, we are talking end tables and hat racks and, you know, all gilded gold furniture. so the entire hotel has been -- >> redecorated? >> redecorated, especially the royal suite, which is the

4,000-square-foot suite at the top of the hotel in order to accommodate the king and his entoura entourage. his entourage can go up to, i hear, 1,000 people. so we are talking -- and there were fleets and fleets of mercedes and high-end cars at andrews air force base yesterday. >> where do they store all this gold furniture and velvets and whatever they have got? >> taken a couple of days and, you know, making the shift and also replacing guests who had been staying there are booked to stay at the four seasons and other luxury hotels. yeah, the entire hotel is apparently a buyout, as well as their red carpets everywhere, including the down stair private garage. so if he comes in underneath the hotel, never has to set food on the asphalt. >> the four seasons is able to accommodate this kind of entoura entourage? >> very popular destination for dignitaries and other royals mainly because they have six presidential suites, each on a different floor, so, if you're from even warring countries, you can stay with your entourage on

one time, floor of the hotel and never have to see the other guy. also, the windows in the royal suite are bulletproof glass and the only place in town. now the trump hotel is going to have bulletproof glass in their windows, their suites. right now, dignitaries feel safe there >> do you know how many people are in the entourage? >> based on the doors, hundreds of vehicles there could be several hundred people with the king. i know some of you are seeing a little bit of lightning out there, chances as we move forward of seeing any thunderstorms become less and less, but it is all within with that bay breeze, again, those storms, the showers tracking from east to west. you can see the trend here. and again, another area to keep our eye on is way up here, areas of delaware, northern delaware, skirting lated across areas of northern maryland, howard county, montgomery county, check out, right here, still some showers through fauquier county, around warrenton, a little

storm, right now still popping around culpepper that is all heading to the south and west, toward locusdale and the chance for a few thunderstorms throughout the area. these are producing some moderate, even heavy rain. but in terms of our rain chances, throws continue to drop, too as we make our way through the evening. the chance stays high until 7, 8, 9:00, perhaps even 10:00. by night, our chance really drops off, i think we will be very much better. we saw temperatures again today, up around 90 degrees, we will drop to the mid-70s by 11 with a shower, the storm chance starting to end and wrap up. by tomorrow morning, still some lingering clouds and can't rule out an isolated shower or two but what about tomorrow throughout day? what can you expect for the labor day weekend? we talk to chief meteorologist doug kammerer whose backyard weather at this time, nats park. doug? >> yeah, guys, i tell you, nats play tonight, 7:30 game, 7:to 5

a drone crashed into the stands at a u.s. open match last night and this afternoon, a new york city teacher is under arrest for operating it. the teacher was operating the drone from a park outside louis armstrong stadium. luckily, it crashed into an empty section and nobody was injured. one of the players of italy says that she heard the drone fly by and at first, she thought it was a bomb the match was briefly interrupted by officials checked everything out. fans attending the terps football game tomorrow afternoon will be part of a bold new experiment. the university of maryland is starting a one-year pilot program that allows a school to sell beer at its football stadium and other athletic venues this fall.

schools in the sterling area dismissed without incident, on lockdown all day following the killing of a park view high school teen who was walking to the bus stop. the unidentified 17-year-old was shot several times by three suspects who just took off running. a short time ago, authorities said there is no public danger. at the top of the hour, northern virginia bureau chief, julie carey, joins us with word on a possible motive for the shooting. most of the roads that are impacted with rain, even a few thunderstorms south of 66 and out 68 also in western maryland. let me show you what's going on. these storms that we had earlier starting to diminish more and more in intensity. still some showers around our area, of course, fauquier county, prince william county, but the beltways looking drier. tracking this storm, now just a main area of moderate rain passing just south of dulles airport, moving away from dulles airport now, so, doubt there's

of the harris county sheriff's office in texas, survived by his wife and two children. growing backlash against symbols of the confederate south yielded a cop strokers change in southern virginia. the town of stuart, virginia is named for confederate general jeb stewart but a judge still ordered the removal of stewart's portrait from the town's courthouse. he argue it had makes the courthouse more neutral a statue of stewart will still stand outside the courthouse. now, we want to go to the migrant crisis that is engulfing europe and some images that a lot of people find disturbing, called the biggest movement of people since world war ii. hundreds of thousands of desperate people trying to escape war, terrorism and poverty in syria and other parts of the middle east and north africa. the humanitarian crisis has been developing for more than a year, but it exploded into the headlines this week when a syrian boy's body washed up on the shores of turkey. long-time journalist, andrea

koppel, is now the vice president of global engagement and policy at the humanitarian organization, mercy corps. we thank you so much for joining us. so the syrian civil war has been under way for four and a half years, but is it because we're seeing this that this means that things are getting worse? >> absolutely, erika. and the reason, quite simply? a humanitarian catastrophe of a magnitude that we have not seen in decades. it's actually an emergency within an emergency and should be a huge wakeup call to world leaders, especially president obama that they must end this warm as you said, it's been going on for four and a half years. you have 12 million syrians. that is roughly half of the prewar population of syria that is on the move, inside syria and flooding over the bored nears neighboring countries, like

lebanon, jordan, iraq and turkey. jordan and lebanon especially are incredibly fragile countries to begin with so the idea that you have hundreds of thousands of people who have either been in some of either refugee camps or living in communities in some of these other countries that have now said it is so bad, my life is so bad, i am willing to risk my life and get into a rubber boat and go across the mediterranean to try to start my life again. >> what are the chances that we will see this end soon? is that even a possibility? >> i hope that your viewers will get on the phone to their senators to their congresspeople and ask their neighbors of congress to get president obama to step up engagement, to come up with a political solution that is the only way that this crisis is going to come to an

all right, vj, thank you. we have another important car recall to tell you about. nissan is recalling 300,000 of its versa and versa note vehicles so it can adjust a console panel. the problem is in rare cases, the edge of the driver's shoe can get caught in that panel when the driver tries step on the brake. at least one accident is blamed on this issue. the recall affects model years 2012 through 2015. learn more information on this recall and the nbc washington app, search nissan recalls. nervous neighbors in orange county, florida. a king cobra escaped from a cable at its orlando area home on tuesday. since then, officials have been searching about 60 acres of land trying to find the eight-foot-long venomous snake. >> i'm nervous. i mean, it's a king cobra, for goodness shake sake. >> howl will they look for before they give up if they don't find it? will everybody around here have to watch their yards and their backs for the next 20 years?

emotions rap high when someone posted video online of a sacramento college student receiving cpr just before he died after the being shot during a fight on campus.
