they say someone shot two men, one of them in the head. derrick ward is there with more on the story. what are you hearing? >> reporter: well, good morning. we understand and we can tell this is a pretty wide crime scene. it encompasses at least a quarter of this block at the intersection of 7th and tuckerman. it happened about 3:25 this morning. that's when police were summoned to the area where they found one man shot in the head and another person shot and wounded critically. we don't know exactly much more in the way of details on that. they were found a distance apart. and police are processing two crime scenes. we are here at the corner of 7th and tuckerman where two cars are about to be towed away. they were up on the truck and put back down again possibly to make sure they get through the police evidence lab. we do understand one of the victims of the shooting has died. we don't have an identity. both victims were adult males. again, this happened about 3:25 this morning in a neighborhood

where folks say essentially they don't see this kind of problem. we are in sight of coolidge high school. police are processing both scenes. the streets are closed. you might want to avoid them georgia avenue and south dakota. we are live in northwest, derrick ward, news 4. >> thank you, derrick. developing news, a call for heal help is a death investigation. police found a body inside a burned out vehicle. if you have our nbc washington app you got the alert. investigators first went to the scene on xenia street around 9:30 last night. that's when someone called about a car on fire. today we could learn more about the person who died and the circumstances of his or her death. new this morning we're working to learn more about a crash on suitland parkway. for hours police shut down all lanes between alabama avenue southeast and branch avenue. one woman had to be removed from her car.

paramedics rushed her to united medical center. no word on how many other people were involved in that crash. again, all lanes on suitland parkway are back open once again. and today we may learn more about a woman who died after a car ran into her near a bus stop in fairfax county. all three people inside the car that hit her are in the hospital this morning. now police in springfield say the driver hit another car yesterday after running into the woman at the bus stop on old keen mill road near greeley boulevard. and today we're expecting to learn more about a drowning in ocean city. ocean city firefighters say a 7-year-old girl died after drowning in the ocean there. officials plan to release more information on how the girl drowned later today. the quest for a better life is closer than ever for thousands of refugees. the number of migrants flooding into austria and germany just staggering. nbc's bill neely updates us now on the thousands still in the middle of their journey.

>> reporter: they've made it. cheered by german crowds, the migrants' long march is over from war in syria to freedom in germany and food. they reached western europe in torrential rain but celebrating. now we are free. running across the border into austria, 6,000 of them after days trapped in hungary. hungary's government had tried to put them in camps, wouldn't let them leave for days, then under pressure busts them out of the country. they were exhausted after weeks on the road. finally tonight tasting victory. but in greece, they keep coming. so far europe has proved completely incapable of solving the migrant problem. it can't cope with those who have already come and it certainly can't stop these people arriving. this boatload fled syria, one teenager collapsing, afraid she'd drown at sea.

bill neely, nbc news, greece. happening today northern virginia bureau chief julie kerry just spoke with alexandria mayor bill euille and he will launch a write-in campaign to keep his job. he'll make that formal announcement later today. now julie reports euille already has the support of other democrats including the former mayor. mayor euille was defeated in the june democratic primary by allison silverburg. by then it was too late to file for an independent campaign leaving a write-in campaign as his only option. several political activists in alexandria tell julie kerry that they expect euille will wage another campaign. that's a story we'll stay on top of for you as it develops today. the holiday weekend is over for the washington football team. it's become to practice today ahead of next weekend's season opener against miami. a lot of you may be wondering

welcome back at 9:10. las vegas police say a 24-year-old man is behind bars for driving drunk causing a deadly crash. two people died, four others got hurt in the crash yesterday morning. police say jonathan sped through a light and hit a bus. the bus then caught fire. two people were not able to get out of the bus in time. everything is back to normal on the chesapeake bay bridge this morning. a ten-mile backup had people sitting in their cars instead of enjoying the labor day weekend. a look at traffic, seems to be moving pretty well in that area. all the trouble began with a power outage friday night that led to the significaals being d preventing two-way traffic heading to the beaches. the maryland transportation authority says it's working to figure out what caused that power outage. flights are back to normal

in los angeles after a bomb scare. this is what it looked like. take a look. yesterday afternoon was no pretty picture after someone called in the threat. the caller said there was an explosive device inside a home lapped security vehicle parked near a terminal. police and airport authorities evacuated three terminals while the bomb squad investigated. they did not find anything suspicious. the all clear was given two hours later. a weekend party interrupted by gunfire. >> and coming up, the shooting in north carolina that left several people dead late last night including a young child. >> we're also helping you prepare for your holiday weekend as you wake up to mostly sunny skies. the conditions you'll see later today. plus your labor day forecast ahead. ♪

a 9-year-old north carolina boy is dead after being shot in his front yard. police say the family was having a party and people were in the front yard there around 9:00 last night someone started shooting at the home. four people were hit. two kids included. the boy died right there in the yard. the other victims are expected to be okay. detectives spent the night looking for witnesses. a maryland man is charged with drunk driving and manslaughter after a crash that killed a passenger in his truck. this happened friday night along buckleystown line. he ran a stop sign, hitting

another car. police quickly arrested halliburton. two other people in the truck and other people in second vehicle went to the hospital. everyone is okay after this emergency on water. look at this video. news 4 will work today to learn more about what started this fire on a boat at baltimore's waterfront. you can see the huge plume of black smoke. firefighters say it took them about 40 minutes to put out those flames. i want to alert but a deadly salmonella outbreak affecting half of the country. the centers for disease control linked cucumbers imported from mexico. one person in virginia has symptoms but we do want to make it clear the cdc says the company did not distribute the taned produce to stores in virginia, d.c. or maryland. if you're concerned health officials say you can always ask your grocer where they get their produce. >> if they came from the united states or here locally in arizona, they are safe to eat.

if you don't know where the cucumbers are from, throw them away. health officials say you should always wash your produce salmonella outbroke or not. a student's in trouble for crashing a drone into part of the university of kentucky's newly renovated football stadium saturday. no one was hurt. there is no serious damage to the building. a school spokesperson says police are considering what steps to take next. this is the second incident this week where a drone interrupted a game. we told you friday about this drone at the u.s. open. it crashed in the louie armstrong stadium thursday night in the middle of a match. both players heard the crash and they stopped. a high school science teacher now faces charges. news 4 celebrated the art of the written word at the 15th annual library of congress national book festival. more than 170 authors, poets, illustrators on display at the washington convention center yesterday. people lined up to meet some of

that's the concept of some of the newest app for your smartphone, called teledermatology. it seems easy and convenient. as doreen gentzler reports, some doctors are warning the convenience might not be worth the risk. she plays three varsity sports. she plays the violin. every moment of the day i feel like is pretty much full. >> reporter: when eileen lopez needs to take her daughter, olivia, to the dermatologist's office, trying to find an appointment time that fits in seems impossible. >> anything that we can do to ease the schedule for our family. >> reporter: but this app could help. it's called dermatologist on call, just one of dozens of apps promising to treat and diagnose skin problems within days all without leaving your home. >> essentially a photograph is taken of a lesion and it's stored online and forwarded to the board certified dermatologist who will review

the case and render a diagnosis, provide a treatment plan, and prescribe appropriate prescriptions. >> reporter: do joanne simpson is an alexandria dermatologist to works with the dermatologist on call app. she says she reviews patient information on her smartphone. typically she sees conditions like acne, warts, athlete'soot and rosacea. >> very straight forward looking at the pictures very much feels like what i'd experience here in the office. >> reporter: dr. simpson says it gives patients quick access to a dermatologist. she's required to diagnose them within 72 hours. compare that with calling around to get an office appointment. patients often have to wait days if not weeks for one of those. >> it can be fraught with danger. >> reporter: this d.c. determine to just dr. isaacson is concerned patients won't get the foll follow-up they need and pictures often don't provide enough information. >> especially if the photograph is poor quality. i can't tell you how many times

comfortable humidity in place. all right, thanks, tom. well, new this morning d.c. police investigating a shooting in southeast. it happened on 7th avenue around 1:30 this morning. police say the victim is under 18 years old. he was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. a 22-year-old man has become the district's 106th homicide victim. d.c. police say someone shot and killed davon wade friday night on 25th street northwest. two other men were also shot. right now they're in the hospital with serious injuries. police say they're offering a $25,000 reward for information on who may have done this. d.c. has seen more homicides to date this year than in all of 2014. expect extra security around park view high school in sterling. detectives from loudoun county say the deadly shooting after student friday morning was likely gang related and that at least one of their suspects has connections to that school. >> what i've been told by kids

away states to gather on the lawn outside her cell in grayson, kentucky, yesterday. as many as 3,000 people thanked davis for what they feel is doing god's work. 9:34. you could soon be able to buy liquor on sundays at some stores in prince george's county. bureau chief tracee wilkins says this will be a battle. take a look at the arguments for yourself. a lot of times people are hanging out it at the liquor stores who are alcoholics and have issues. we're not helping them. >> reporter: belinda queenhoward is against selling liquor in her district that borders the district of columbia. >> the people that we elect making these changes they're thinking are going to better the world but we are hurting the next generation and making things harder. >> reporter: this map provided by the prince george's liquor board shows most of the stores requesting the permit are along the d.c. line. >> i know there's an argument that we want to be competitive and be like our neighbors.

>> reporter: prince george's councilmember julie toles represents district seven. it has a disproportionate number of liquor stores compared to the rest of the county and has what's called border crime. she wants residents to have a chance to weigh in on opening liquor stores on sundays where they live. >> i would like to see them slow down a little bit. it was just signed in july. give the opportunity for the public to weigh in more, have some evening meetings. >> reporter: the liquor board says this is about their opportunities for businesses in prince george's. >> our licensees felt they were losing business to the surrounding counties. >> we are struggling to survive. >> reporter: yeung pang says that's why he's applied. he says since d.c. started selling liquor on sundays, some of his customers have changed stores altogether. >> we keep losing the sunday business and weekday businesses, too. >> reporter: more than 130 applicants but only 100 permits they're handing out in prince george's. hearings will be happening

police in illinois say they're closer in the investigation of police gliniewi gliniewicz. now detectives say they have a significant new piece of evidence from the crime scene in fox lake. they say they have multiple images of people who match the suspects' descriptions thanks to intersection cameras and residents' private security systems. back at home a series of bold burglaries has a montgomery neighborhood on alert. police say they think the same man tried to rob three different stores in potomac. two happened just yesterday morning. now take a look at a couple of surveillance images here from the crime scene. the suspect seems to be going for cash. police say he took money from an open register from a food and deli yesterday morning. ten minutes earlier he hit up the sunoco gas station. officers tell us he tried to rob

the same gas station early friday morning as well. no arrests this morning despite a tense couple of minutes when groups of protesters overlapped downtown. >> black lives matter. black lives matter. >> you can see union station jam packed there with demonstrators with the black lives matter movement earlier yesterday afternoon. some of them clashed with a group of people at upper senate park voicing support. police were there to monitor the whole situation but both groups kept their actions peaceful. this weekend on metro you'll see double digit delays because of track work. you could end upaiting 26 minutes for a train on the orange, silver or blue lines and yellow and green line trains are on a normal weekend schedule. when you get on the trains some of you may have noticed it's taking longer to get from point "a" to point "b."

metro is slowing down trains to a crawl in some places because new speed restrictions are in place after metro discovered safety concerns. for as long as six to eight more weeks this is what it will look like as you roll through certain parts of the metro system. a very, very slow roll because of safety issues that need to be fixed. and patience is wearing thin. >> they need to fix a lot of things on metro. >> following that derailment last month, metro took a closer look at the tracks all over, saying it identified large sections that need to be fixed. in a lot of places the actual rail has to be better secured. here the locations where the work is happening foggy bottom to farragut west, medical center to grover. and dupont circle to woodley park. this rider just got off one of the slow trains and says metro needs to fix it fast. >> have to be to work at a certain time. if not that's a write-up. i can't call because when it's in between tracks or under the tunnel there's no service.

day of the three-day weekend with the lower humidity in place. and look at our temperatures here. not in the 20s. it's right around 70 degrees. right around most of maryland and virginia. in the mountains down to the mid-60s. this morning around dawn in the upper 50s to around 60s throughout much of the region. and storm team 4 radar showing showers, thundershowers offer the carolina coast. that's the nearest rain to us. that will stay well to our south today and again tomorrow. we're getting a few high clouds from the system. this is just some ground clutter on the radar. a beautiful start to the day and, play ball, nationals park, they take on the advantage braves. the first pitch is at 1:35. we'll be into the low 80s with some high clouds, a light breeze during the game. then mid to upper 80s by the seventh inning and by the last out back to the mid-80s.

a little more humid. getting back to work and school or certainly feeling like summer again. a heat wave coming in for a couple of days and then a chance of needed rain for our parched lawns, maybe a passing shower or thundershower on friday. extended outlook looks like low humidity returns just in time for saturday and sunday. a family pet makes it home safe after weeks lost in the wilderness. >> how this dog was able to get back to his home safe and sound. you exercise.

but then i was like duh, just use your phone. mobile-deposit-techno-thingy to the rescue. i'm rayna. and i bank human at td bank. you had an opportunity later today to welcome a new pet into your family. at noon the lost cat and dog rescue foundation will kick off what they're calling a two-day mega adoption event running until 3:00 this afternoon at the pet smart on arlington boulevard in the seven corners area of falls church. if you can't make it out today the foundation will host the same event from noon to 3:00 tomorrow as well. so check it out. after being lost for more than 40 days in the wilderness at yellow stone national park, a colorado man's dog is back safe and sound at home. nbc's nelson garcia talked to the joyful owner. >> reporter: of all the sights

to see at yellow stone national park -- >> it's beautiful, it's gorgeous. all the wild animals. we're both nature people. >> water falls and the bears and remember all the memories of bringing a child. >> reporter: none were quite as beautiful as this. >> come up here. >> reporter: jake, the australian shepherd. >> she's only 16 months old. 45 miles an hour and this kid crossed the double yellow line. >> reporter they were driving through yellow stone when they crashed head-on into another car. they were injured and jade ran off. >> hurry up and get there as quick as we can. we have to find her. >> we panicked immediately. >> i thought she was gone, three or four miles deep into the woods. >> reporter: in a place where wildlife is abound, they were not sure if they would ever see jade again but they never gave up. >> wildlife was a concern. >> reporter: they launched an online campaign to find jade and the dog had been spotted a few times.

so they went back to yellow stone again this week, friday morning, taking her other dog for a walk with hope. >> a minute or two later i saw a little black head pop up at the edge about 100 yards away. here, puppy, puppy. good girl. and she just came bounding to me. >> i saw jade come running in the front door and i lost it. >> she was self-sufficient but -- >> she ate something for 44 days, i can tell that. >> reporter: now here is an amazing sight, 44 days in the making, jade back home. >> my life's been on hold since july 23. i felt like it was ground hogs day, the movie. and finally i can go back to normal life now that she's back. >> that's amazing. the owners say jade has lost a little weight but she's looking pretty healthy right now. >> cute. cute dog, too. >> absolutely. well, it was suppose d to b harmless fun aimed at relieving a little stress. >> but we'll show you what we're learning about the injuries this
