right now at 6:00, the loudoun county supervisor arrested overnight. the text message he sent county leaders about his future. a code red at a packed zoo after a big cat escapes from its enclosure. and a brand-new nbc poll shows a big shakeup in the race for the white house. we begin with the labor day weekend shakeup in the loudoun county government. just a few hours ago, county supervisor sean williams resigned from office. the resignation comes just hours after williams was charged with assaulting a neighbor. news4's darcy spencer is live in ashburn with a look at how all

this played out. darcy? >> reporter: well, erika, what we have been able to find out from neighbors is there was a celebration out here last night, a block party right here on this street. but early this morning, this elected official here in loudoun county was charged with pushing his neighbor. he spent time in jail and when he was leased this afternoon, he resigned, via text message. this is a photo of sean williams, a republican member of the loudoun county board of supervisors taken from his government web page. this is his mugshot, taken after he was arrested on charges of simple assault and unlawful entry. after being leareleased from ja williams resigned from office via text messages. neighbors here say there had been a peaceful block party here on ashburn and it ended badly. at 1 a.m., the sheriff's office says williams forced his by this a neighbor's house then pushed the man during a dispute. deputies arrested him and took

him to jail, where he was later released on those misdemeanor charges. board chairman scott york issued a statement calling for his resignation. york told me by phone that he sent williams an e-mail and text telling him he should leave office. and williams responded to the text saying that he resigned. charlie king is a fellow republican running for board chairman. >> a lot of us have been worried about sean for a long time. by stepping down, he has taken the right step, the first step, to getting the help that he needs and i just wish him and his family the best. >> reporter: i'm told that that resignation took effect immediately. we did try to speak to some neighbors out here today. they did not want to go on camera but one did tell me when i said do you think he should have resigned from off, the person told me that he has served the community well, but he has to do what's best for himself and his family. we did knock on his door today but no one answered. erika, back to you. >> darcy spencer live in ashburn

for us. thank you so very much. this is not sean williams' first run-in with the law. williams withdraw from this year's race for board chairman. he admitted having several drunk driving and domestic disputes. one of the more serious charges came in 2006 when williams was accused of beating up his girlfriend in his grandmother's ocean city condo. police documents say williams assaulted the woman after becoming suspicious when another man called her cell phone. the charges in that case were dismissed. d.c. police make an arrest in an early-morning homicide. they say the person was shot near 7th and tuckerman streets in north best. it happened around 3:30 in the morning. the man was shot in the head. emts rushed him to the hospital but did he not survive. police say a second man was also shot at that location. he is expected to be okay. dejuanette ridge has been charged with murder. we now know the name of a woman hit and killed while

waiting for a bus in fairfax county. police say a car hit 47-year-old man yesterday afternoon and learned alcohol was a factor in the crash and this man, 22-year-old corey english has been charged with dwi. but officers say additional charges are possible. english and the driver of another car were not injured in the crash. this fire at a condo complex in howard county may have been a lot worse if the building wasn't so close to the fire department. firefighters say they arrived in seconds to the condo on wyndham way in columbia this morning because the fire department was right next door. it took more than 75 firefighters to get the flames under control. fire officials say two residents had minor injuries and one firefighter was burned. it is not clear though what caused that fire. tragedy in ocean city during this holiday weekend.

an 8-year-old girl was swimming with friends in shallow water last night when she was hit by a wave and overcome by that wave and pulled into the inlet waters. crews found her about a quarter of a mile offshore but she later died at the hospital. you can tell it was something serious, just by the looks on the faces of the employees. >> code red at the indianapolis zoo after a cheetah escaped this morning. the 4-year-old animal got over the primary wall of its enclosure and started roaming around a grassy area near the fence. zoo officials issued a code red for an escaped animal after the cheetah got close enough to visitors. everybody was ushered indoors while they tracked the animal down. they had to use a tranquilizer dart to sedate the cheetah. the lockdown was lifted after about an hour. the cheetah was airlifted back into its enclosure. bernie sanders overtakes hillary clinton in the democratic race for the

president. that according to a new nbc news/marist poll. the poll shows sand wers a nine-point lead over clinton in new hampshire. on the republican side, donald trump still ahead of the pack. the poll says he has a seven-point lead in iowa and 16-point lead in new hampshire. ohio governor john kasich and neurosurgeon ben carson ranked second and third. in less than three weeks, pope francis will be making his much-anticipated visit to the u.s. the pope will be making stops at two of d.c.'s most well-known churches and both are getting ready for his arrival. the pope will take part in midday prayer at the cathedral of st. matthew, the apostle on september 23rd, the next day, meet with people at st. patrick's. learn about the pope's visit and how it will affect traffic on the nbc washington app. well, the beginning of the college football season got off to a smashing start at one school after a drone crashed into the football stadium.

people living at the north park apartments in bethesda evacuated today. small fire broke out on the seventh floor this afternoon. the apartments are on park avenue. the fire department says that it started in the kitchen of one apartment and smoke quickly started filling the hallways. alexandria mayor bill euille is launching a write-in campaign to keep his job. the four-term mayor was defeated in the june democratic primary by council vice chair, allison silverberg. it came down to just over 300 votes. by then though, it was too late for euille to file as an independent. mayor euille made the announcement surrounded by supporters at the waterfront park this afternoon. he said people were stopping him in the streets and the grocery stores, wondering if he would run. >> friends who voted for me, who many who said that -- and many who didn't vote for me that said that i need to do this write-in campaign. this city is worth fighting for. i was born and raised here.

people have been setting sail from buzzard point marina for half a decade, but the d.c. marina is closing tend of the year. the national parks service is not renewing the marina's contract. they say that they will work with the community to determine the future of the area. news4's derrick ward spoke to boaters about their fond memories of the place. >> our beautiful boat is right over here. >> reporter: the sunny sunday before labor day, a great time to go down to the river and set out from the buzzard point marina. >> this little hidden gem, you don't really know that it's here until you're on top of it. >> reporter: their boat is the blue nose, 50 years on the water and still sea worthy but as they mine the cut of the jib and hoist the main sail, there will be an undercurrent of angst on this out. their main concern is this maybe

one of the last times they will be able to set sail from here. the national park service will shut the marina down. they actually own it and lease it to the marina operators. the park service says the cost of modernizing it and ensuring it's safe are too high to make it a feelsible marina. >> i love this play, i don't understand why they just made a unilateral decision to close it down. >> been requests, repeated requests from the marina to improve the marina and they have been repeatedly denied by the national park service. now the national park service is saying, well, with to have shut it down because it's not been maintained. >> reporter: even the park service acknowledges it has been part of the rivers a comeback. >> used to see a lot of interesting things float by on this river here when we were sailing. >> reporter: elizabeth stern bergers are childhood outing withes with her father, the secret coke machine. >> you press the right button, for a quarter, get a can of shah litz. >> reporter: but it has been part of linking washintonians with their waterways. . this community marina for people

good. some of the area beaches got a little bit of rain today, specifically down south, through the outer banks and even through wilmington, north carolina, otherwise, we were dry here today in d.c. refreshing as we go out tonight, temperatures in the 80s and 70s, here is look at the line this as we drop into the low 70s during the overnight. think d.c. will probably end up in the upper 60s, that's where i have a 68 for an overnight low here in d.c., 64, manassas, 65, leesburg, there's your labor day forecast, a touch more humidity, but all sunshine, so, make sure that you go ahead and lather on that sunscreen, going to need it. out tomorrow morning, definitely going to need it going out to nats park for the game at 1:00, yeah, definitely need it, but all sunshine tomorrow and again, you may feel a touch more humidity and temperature, a little bit warmer than today. today, we made it into the mid-80s, right around 90 degrees tomorrow a lot of places stuck in the upper 80s, stale touch warmer and going to be warm and humid for much of this week, so it's not over yet. on monday, right around 90

degrees, throw mid-90s, tuesday and wednesday. wednesday, we will have those rain chances. and then we will have some rain chances thursday night into friday, as a cold front passes through, but we are going to have to deal with the heat and humidity all through the rest of this workweek, humidity finally drop by the time we get into next weekend. erika? >> thanks. the university of kentucky and police are still decide building to charge a student whose drone crashed into the football stadium. a fan captured the drone as it hovered above. you see it there? nobody was injured and the stadium was not damaged. police quickly found the drone's owner, but have not decide blood to press charges. the biggest series of the nats' season starts tomorrow but they are feeling, let me tell you, pretty good after this you, pretty good after this weekend.

it was amazing. for those of you thought that have a significant other that loves football, i am warning you right now, after this sunday, from here on out, the rest of the year, every saturday and sunday, that special someone will be glued to the couch. don't ask me to hang out. i can't take you to the airport. nothing. no favors. i am watching football. the redskins kick off their season one week from today. the skins were out at practice this morning in ashburn. first practice session since the final cuts were made saturday afternoon. robert griffin iii still not been cleared to play in games by a neurologist. meanwhile, kirk cousins, your starting quarterback, getting the offense ready for the miami dolphins. the roster finally set, these 53 players can't wait to get the season started. >> when i came in this morning, i seen everybody, like this is my family. this is who i got to go to war with for 22 weeks. said if these the guys i got to put trust in. >> with he can start building, preparing for that first game
