now. i'm aaron gilchrist at the live desk. we're watching the president's visit to boston this labor day. i want to show you live pictures from the boston park plaza hotel. one of the senators from the area speaking ahead of the president. the president is going to speak to the greater boston labor council -- labor day breakfast and rally. several speakers lined up there. this group is about 90,000 members strong. it's already accomplished something that we expect the president to talk about today. he is going to sign an executive order requiring paid sick leave for employees of federal contractors. now, this order would demand up to seven days per year for workers of federal contract companies. this boston union celebrating earned sick leave legislation that passed earlier this year. some increased wages as well for folks who are part of the union there in the greater boston area. this is an off shoot if you

will, of the afl-cio. president obama is going to push congress to expand the requirement beyond contract workers to most businesses. that idea, though, has not really gotten much traction at this point. i'm storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell. it's a nice way to get your labor day holiday started. nothing but sunshine now. but temperatures are creeping back up close to the 90-degree mark. i think we can have at least two or three days this week at or above 90. another little september heat wave. no chance for rain any time today or for tomorrow. next real chance of any rain moving into the area probably not until late wednesday afternoon or wednesday evening. in the meantime, enjoy the sunshine and the warm weather. 82 now. gaithersburg and 81 in manassas. highs today, mid to upper 80s to near 90 inside the capital beltway. we'll talk about tmorrow and the rest of the week in a few minutes. >> thanks, chuck. the family of a woman hit

and killed is reeling from their loss. kristin wright is on the scene for us. what are police telling you at this point? >> reporter: you know what, the family so incredibly torn apart and just clearly devastated by what happened here today. police are telling me that the mother and daughter were walking across 355 here, headed to that bus stop you see there, maybe going to church. >> a family overcome by grief. their loved one taken away so suddenly. medics and an ambulance had to be called because the grief was too much. their loved one, about 50 years old, was hit by a car and killed while crossing southbound route 355 to get to the bus stop at southwest land drive in gaithersburg at 6:00 this morning. she was with her adult daughter, a witness to her own mother's death. police say the woman who died

was crossing the street with a cane. >> investigators are stating that she was in the area of the crosswalk, but that determination won't be confirmed until they look at a lot more evidence. >> the driver stayed and is being questioned by police. his windshield shattered, collision reconstruction teams are trying to put the pieces together. >> want to know, was the signal functioning properly and what the signals were for the parties involved. >> a family friend tells me the mother and daughter were on their way to church in d.c. a distraught woman held tight to a religious picture. >> reporter: it's still early in the investigation that police tell me they just don't know what happened. but they do want to remind everyone that no matter if you are driving or if you are walking, you have to do your part and make sure that you are paying attention to everything around you. and barbara, that particularly is important when it's dark at

6:00 in the morning as it was today. back to you. >> thanks you, kristin. a call right now for tips after a violent night at an apartment complex in temple hills, maryland. prince george's county police found the man dead on the stairs steps away from a dumpster. another man is hurt after shooting around midnight. a stabbing sent a third man to the hospital. officers say the attacks at the princeton estates apartments on dallas place were not random. news 4's green spent the morning piecing together this investigation. look for her live report in a little bit. we're working to find out how supervisor shawn williams will be replaced. the republican resigned yesterday after being arrested for assaulting a neighbor in ashburn. we talked to people who say a dispute broke out after a block party on wingford court where williams lives. the sheriffs department says he forced his way into a neighbor's house and pushed a man during

the fight. williams resigned via text message to board chairman, scott york. >> a loot lot of us have been worried about shawn for a long time. he's taking the first step to get the help he needs. i wish him and his family the best. >> shawn williams has a history with police. he withdrew from the race for board chairman. williams admitted to having drunk driving and domestic disputes as well. one of the more serious charges came in 2006 when williams was accused of beating up his girlfriend in his grandmother's ocean city condo. williams assaulted the woman after becoming suspicious when another man called her cell phone. the charges in that case were dismissed. today is the last day of summer for lots of students in northern virginia. thousands head back to the classroom tomorrow in fairfax county. more than 57,000 high schoolers get to sleep later this school year. the 22 high schools will start

between 8:00 and 8:10 a.m. middle schools starts at 7:30 a.m. changing start times means changing bus schedules. fairfax county police will be out in force and a lot of extra approximate buses. arlington schools welcome students back as well. discovery elementary school opened for the first time. it's named for john glenn. it's the first new school in 14 years in the county. there was concern that the school would not be ready for the first day. teachers didn't start moving things into the classroom until late last week. spontsylvania county school and others will be back in school. we'll have news starting at 4:26 on "news4 today." cecil the lion's killer returning to work and restating his innocence. his explanation in 60 seconds.

the minnesota dentist who shot and killed a beloved african lion heads back to work this week. walter palmer has spent more than a month in hiding since the world found out he killed cecil the lion. during an interview with the a.p., palmer says he acted legally and had no idea he was one of zimbabwe's treasured animals. at one point, they planned to extradite palmer to face charges but no formal steps were taken. the dentist will be back to work tomorrow. staff at the indianapolis zoo are trying to figure out how a 4-month-old cheetah got loose. they tracked the cheetah down and tranquilized it. >> i didn't feel like we were in danger at any point in time. you could tell it was something

funeral services set to begin soon north of chicago where the fox lake community is burying lieutenant joe siff gliniewicz. they're paying tribute this morning. these are live pictures from inside antioch high school where the visitation is under way. we know earlier, his wife, his widow now, had been greeted by some officers who helped with part of the procession earlier today. there's expected to be a two-hour break before the funeral starts this afternoon. there will be officers from across the country at that time. earlier this morning, the lieutenant's casket arrived at the high school. he actually went to that high school years ago. police officers stood at attention as hearst pulled up. they're carrying the casket into the auditorium. he was shot to death last week after calling in a report of

three suspicious men. investigators uncovered new clues but they have still not made any arrests as of yet. after the funeral today, thousands are expected to line the streets with signs and flowers as that casket is driven to the cemetery. angie, back to you. aaron, thanks. well, we've seen more shark attacks on both coast this is year and surfers watching out for the threat. >> gadi schwartz talks with a man who found himself face to face with a shark and lived to share his story. >> reporter: beneath the surface along the nation's coast, sharks showing up and making headlines. this weekend, dylan marks was the latest to tangle with the shark. >> got a taste of my mortality. >> he's quick to point out this wasn't technically an attack. >> he was fishing when he decided to hook a hammerhead. when he did, he realized it was more than he bargained for. >> i wanted to get the hook out and didn't get out of the way in time. >> two weeks ago, another

kayaker, another close call with a hammerhead. this time near san diego. the same day, a great white chomped down on a long board near morro bay and on sunday, in cape cod, a great white rescue effort as dozens of beach-goers rushed to help a beached shark with buckets of water. experts say warm el nino temperatures brought sharks closer to shore. this year alone, 34 sharks in the u.s., including a series of bites along north carolina in june. >> experts tell us the rice in sightings like these young great whites could be considered a success story with recovery efforts. >> those interactions will go up. but we have to better educate the public to be ocean smart. >> reporter: we paddled out to talk to surfers about the shark increa increase. >> you ever think about sharks out here. >> yeah. all the recent reports on the

tomorrow. chance of thunderstorms on wednesday. primarily late afternoon and evening. the best chance on thursday. they're likely to linger into friday, maybe friday afternoon. the upcoming weekend looks great. chuck, it is getting more popular for teenagers to smoke e-cigarettes. new research says some teens are using them to smoke pot. erica edwards shows us how kids are able to hide getting high. >> reporter: are these teenagers getting a hit of nicotine or secretly getting high? >> teens have actually discovered how to use e-cigarettes for wrapping marijuana. >> reporter: researchers from yale university had thousands of students fill out an anonymous survey. nearly a third tried e-cigarettes. some of them say they vaped marijuana. >> they had used e-cigarettes and experimented with cannabis

in the past. the number went up higher to 27%. >> reporter: often, they're smoking mash oil, a thick yellow res inextracted from marijuana plants. hash oil tends to be more potent than the average joint and there's little to no telltale scent. that means kids may be smoking pot around unsuspecting parents and teachers. >> their fear of getting caught has gone down. that's a big deal. once you remove the fear of getting punished, they're going to experiment more. i'm not surprised one bit about it. >> what's more, some evidence that marijuana may disrupt normal development of the growing teenage brain. erica edwards, nbc news. a secret stonehenge on steroids. it's what's trending today and we're talking about it coming up next.

right now in prince george's county, police are looking for who shot and killed a man overnight. two other men are recovering in the hospital. one from the graze of a bullet, the other from stab wounds. since midnight officers have been near complex on temple hills. mi mow let green spent the morning getting details. >> reporter: barbara, no one would speak to us on camera. one resident told me it happened outside her window. she saw a group of men hanging out last night and then she heard gunshots. three shots fired. that's what residents of princeton estates apartments say they heard last night shortly before midnight. and right on these steps is where a man police describe only as a young adult took his last breath. after suffering multiple gunshots. prince george's county police say two others hurt are expected to survive. >> officers also found two other

two high school football players in san antonio have been suspended for that. two vicious hits on that referee. take a closer look. video from friday night's game shows one player from jon jay high school knocking the ref down forcefully to the ground. once he's down, another guy slams into him headfirst. there is an investigation into whether either player hit the ref on purpose. both students have been suspended from the school and the team. there was tennis going on there. not to be outdone by the talent. the squirrel decided it was time for his closeup. he rushed on the court and immediately stole the show. after a couple of seconds of rushing around, he found his way out he jumped into the stands.

now the 48th annual labor day parade is wrapping up in kensington. marching bands, dance groups and floats marching through town. the parade is just part of the festival. armory and howard avenues are lined with food trucks, craft kiosks, games and activities. ndreds of works of art are also on display at kensington town hall. now, if you missed the fun there, do not worry. you have other options. you can head over to gaithersburg around 1:00 this afternoon for its 77th annual labor day parade. you're going to hear high school bands and see antique cars and fire trucks. if you're looking for something a little different, what about glenn echo's art show at noon in about 15 minutes and features more than 650 pieces, including jewelry, paintings, ceramics and sculptures. alexandria's mayor says he will not give up his seat without a fight. he says he will run for

reelection as a write-in candidate. he lost a local primary over the summer to council vice chair allison silver berg. people want him to run so much so, they're encouraging him to do that, stopping him on the street. >> this city is worth fighting for. i was born and raised here and i will not go quietly into the night. >> he has served four terms already as the mayor of alexandria. a california cell phone company wants to change the name of ronald reagan national airport. it's trying to get back at republicans. the gop criticized president obama for changing alaska's mt. mckinley to the name of denali, the original name. well, the cell phone company says republicans did that same thing to reagan national in the '90s. they want to change the name back to washington national airport to honor george washington. the company did launch a petition and so far at last check it has more than 60,000
