this just into our newsroom tonight, gunshots ring out in southeast washington. sending as many as four people to the hospital tonight. >> this is unfolding on martin luther king jr. avenue. we are on the scene where police

have closed off several blocks. shomari? >> reporter: right now d.c. police are here and this suv is blocking traffic here at malcolm southeast and martin luther king avenue southeast. they have put up yellow crime scene tape. you can see there at melon street southeast, they are walking around presumably looking for shell casings and evidence related to this shooting. we are hearing that at least four people have been shot. moments ago there were two metro buses over there. we are broadening this to let you know the effects on the community because there are people on the metro buses, i'm sure they needed to go home and couldn't because they were inside the actual crime scene. no word if there is a suspect in custody. we're still trying to get more information from police. but i do want to point out again that if you planned on coming to martin luther king avenue, we can show you right over there, you want to stay away. i have more information, a source called me and said police

are working an unrelated shooting. this one at forester street. two people were shot. this happened at an apartment. one is on the scene. we don't know his condition. but there is another one, and that person is in critical condition on the way to the hospital. a lot of gun violence here in d.c. tonight. we'll bring you updates as they are available on our nbc washington app. i'm shomari stone for news4. and some good news on the bay bridge, we are finally moving there as people tried to make their way home from the beach today. the backup was 23 miles earlier today after a truck broke down in the center lane of route 50. traffic had to be stopped so crews could move the big rig over to the side of the road. anyone not back to school in our region heads back this week. time is up for all. most kids in virginia will be

getting on buses bright and early tomorrow morning and that could mean a longer commute for some of you. in fairfax county high school starts an hour later at 8:10 a.m. that means more buses will be out during rush hour. fairfax county police tell us they will be watching the effect it has on traffic. >> patience, as with any change, it will take time to work through it. >> reporter: all the added volume at the end of the summer could mean that your commute will double, even triple in the comes weeks. the best advice, leave earlier until you know just how long it's going to take. >> the kids are going back to school tomorrow and parents are headed back to, with, too. you know what they say, all good things come to an be end. the holiday weekend is over. now here's what mother nature has in store for tomorrow. >> mother nature says labor day is the unofficial start to fall and the end of summer, but that's not going to be happening over the next couple of days.

we have another september heat wave. we have already seen one. i think we started another one today. take a look at the high temperatures. 91 in frederick. 90 in d.c. 91 in winchester. 84 is one of the cooler spots right along the river. tomorrow we'll get back there. we'll start off on a good note. the buses getting to a start for the first time this year, looking good at 75 in the morning. but 93 on the way home. outdoor gym will be tough on the students tomorrow. more heat on the way and the storm chances go up the next couple of days. then a potential big pattern shift here in time for the weekend. the pattern shift many of you are going to love. my forecast is in minutes. see you then, doug. news4 as you covered for back tole school. we'll have everything you need to know as students head back to class. the show starts at 4:26 on the a.m. side.

quite a wild scene inside a fast food restaurant in prince george's county. people inside recorded this video of police trying to arrest a man inside mcdonald's in riverdale park last friday. the man was high on pcp and it took repeated use of a stun gun, baton and then pepper spray before they were able to subdue the man and take him into custody. at first glance it looks like any car fire, but d.c. police tell us there was a body in this burning car. and the person inside is now the city's 108th homicide victim this year. investigators say two guys drove the car to foxhall place saturday night. witnesses say they doused the car with gas and lit it on fire. police found a man inside with a gunshot wound to the head. they are still looking for the suspects. and tonight a maryland father says he isn't giving up hope a year after his toddler disappeared. the children were last seen with their mother. she's been charged in the case

but she won't say where the children are. news4's megan fitzgerald has the story. >> somebody said it to us on a facebook page. >> reporter: for the last year, troy turner has dedicated his life to bringing home his 3-year-old daughter sarah and 2-year-old son jacob. >> jacob -- that kid has a golden heart. >> reporter: it's been the most difficult time of his life. >> it's been complete hell. >> reporter: turner says the kids were last seen with their mother, katherine, who is a paranoid schizophrenic. police say within hours on september 7th in the early morning of september 8th of 2014 the children vanished. police believe the mother is responsible but isn't competent enough to stand trial. turner said he used to talk to her regularly hoping to get answers. >> she still maintains she knows where they are. she says they are safe and with someone she trusts. >> reporter: bus montgomery

county police believe the children are no longer alive. but he continues to follow leads that come in on social media. >> right now i'm looking for a photo that came through, i'm going to show it to you, it looks a lot like jacob. >> reporter: he says it could be many more years to come, but he'll never stop searching for his kids. >> they are my children. i mean, that's it. they are my kids. there's no way to stop. >> reporter:fitzgerald, news4. we are watching the most dire refugee crisis since world war ii. and tonight several european countries are reaching their tipping point. in hungary some migrants wrote, we are not animals on their arms in reference to their reception. some say hungary is treating the crisis like an invasion with engineers building up a barbed wire fence along the border and police keeping heavy guard. but there are too many illegal immigrants for the country to handle. today germany pledged another 3 billion euros to help the

migrants. and as each train comes into the station, germans cheer their arrival. families from syria, iraq and afghanistan have been walking for three to four weeks looking for asylum. one woman explains why they are given food, warm clothes and medical attention. >> because i'm a human being and we are all humans. this is the situation. you can't do anything but come here. >> but every country has its limits and today germany admitted it cannot keep up with the migration. some refugee camps in eastern germany have already been attacked and officials say other european union nations have to take in their share. >> chris, thank you. new at 11:00, we now know why the highest court threw out murder charges against amanda knox and her boyfriend. in the written explanation in the march ruling, the court says there was no biological proof the two were at the scene and they should have been excluded. the ruling also slammed police and prosecutors for the way they handled the case.

knox and her boyfriend were convicted twice in the 2007 murder of knox's roommate. both convictions were later overturned. back close to home, heartbreak for a prince george's county family. a mother and father of three killed while making a trip to the grocery store for a labor day barbecue. >> shomari stone has more on the violent crash that took their lives and the pain that's been left behind. >> i feel like somebody has stolen all of my joy from me. >> reporter: virginia moore feels robbed. never expecting to outlive her 31-year-old daughter shalea moore-toby. she and her husband were killed in this car in maryland. >> it's hard, it's saturday, it's confusing. words cannot begin to explain how i feel. >> reporter: shalea and delante were driving to the store to get

food for a barbecue about 2:00 yesterday afternoon. they made a right turn and suddenly police say the driver of this suv crossed the center line to try to pass two other cars and slammed into shalea and delante's new lek shulexus. >> i forgive this person because i know they did not mean to do this. but speed is reckless. >> reporter: the married couple of four years leaves behind three kids. 2-year-old elijah, 9-year-old aliyah, and 10-year-old delante jr. along with a heartbroken grandmother. >> now i have to raise these children. now to the growing mystery in harper's ferry, west virginia. investigators say they have a new clue as to what started a massive fire you may recall last month. that blaze began on the back deck of a restaurant in town.

the state fire marshall says money is missing from that restaurant and they don't know where it went. still investigators will only call the cause of the fire undetermined. it shut down eight other businesses and congress is considering emergency aid for the town which relies heavily on tourism. thousands of people celebrated the labor day holiday at community parades in our region. the parade in kensington, maryland, was a mix of small town traditions that had fire trucks, marching bands and always lots of candy for the kids. and there's a look at the festivities in green belt, maryland. today that city held a labor day festival and parade along crescent road featuring local students, entertainers and more. this is the 60th anniversary of green belt's labor day parade. the dentist who killed cecil the lion is heading back to work and breaking his silence. you'll hear the message he has for his critics. a toxic nightmare for one family. a call to the exterminators left a 10-year-old in the hospital.

hope he'll recover from serious brain damage. the boy lost control of 90% of his body after his home was fumigated for termites last month. the family was given the okay to return after the extermination but they all suddenly began to feel sick. while everyone else felt better, their son payton kept feeling worse. the miami dolphins paid payton a visit today where he's being treated at miami children's hospital. tomorrow the minnesota dentist publicly denounced for killing cecil the lion returns to work. dr. walter palmer's office was shuttered for weeks because of protests. palmer spoke to a local newspaper and said he wouldn't have killed the lion if he knew cecil had a name or was important to research. palmer also said he didn't understand people who threatened his wife and daughter. they weren't even involved. cecil was killed outside of his protected area in zimbabwe. palmer has not been charged with any crime. homework, the kids are bound

to bring it home this week if they haven't already. >> and they probably use a tablet or a laptop for that homework. but there are burn concerns when it comes to where they use and leave those electronics. >> take notes. consumer reporter erika gonzalez has a warning tonight. >> reporter: school is on again and with it lots of students doing homework on these and these. but where they are working, like a plush bed or the family couch, could pose a safety risk. patty davis with the consumer product safety commission. >> laptops and tablets both have lithium ion batteries. lithium ion batteries are very powerful and a very small space. so you need to respect that battery, that powerful battery. >> reporter: just a couple of years ago that apartment here in manassas, virginia, caught fire. the culprit? the overheaded battery which at the time had a recall. the cpsc said it's aware of 674

reports with laptop computers between 2001 and june of 2015 overheating, smoking or catching fire. while they are called laptops, davis says your lap isn't the best place for it. >> it can get hot on your lap. use it on a desktop, use it on a hard surface so that it can have air flow. >> reporter: in fact, some medical journals say over time the heat emitted from the device can cause a modeled skin scan called toasted skin syndrome. this year nvidia and lenovo have called battery packs because of overheating. even if you are not having problems with your device, check the consumer product safety commission site for any open recalls. you can find a link to that right now on the consumer watch facebook page. erika gonzalez, news4. >> homework and back to work and the weekend party is over. it was really nice while it lasted. fairfax county holds on as long as they can.

i know. that was my school system growing up. i loved it after labor day going back to school, you get the extra time, but tomorrow everybody is back. temperatures today on the mild side. well, we'll call it the hot side. the high of 90 degrees today. we'll get hotter the next couple of days. 79 right now with the winds out of the south at 10 miles per hour. those southerly winds are giving us warmer temperatures. and this is where we are right now. a very nice 67 in martinsburg. 69 in culpeper. 72 in honeytown. more humidity the next couple of days. jim henley, the weed is on the high side. the grass is on the high side. allergies will be high for the next couple of days. no real relief in sight. we need some rain to get rid of the pollen. we are not seeing it. the radar is clear with returns. ed don't worry about that, no rain out there on the radar. there won't be any rain any time soon. this one storm system to the south is not coming our way. the one that is is back to the west. so we have d.c., no problem here

with clear skies. back to the west, more cloud cover. that is the cold front to make its way our way. you can see the cold front clearly defined by the storms near kansas city. that will move our way, but first it brings in the heat. the heat comes first and then the storms come. so tomorrow it will be a hot one. waking up to 78 degrees at 8:00 a.m. beautiful. plenty of sunshine and it starts to get warm and toasty outside for that afternoon recess. the kids hitting the gym for the first time. 88 degrees. 93 degrees at 4:00 in the afternoon. rather warm and humid tomorrow night at 8:00 at 87. now, high temperatures tomorrow, 92 in frederick. 93 in manassas. 93 in washington. we've already had one heat wave in the month of september. it looks like we'll see another one and they also think we'll get to 90 during the day on wednesday. now, riding the bike tomorrow morning, best early and late because of the heat tomorrow. lunch and recess, that's the one time you are going to be on the hot side. so we have you in the moderate level. dipper tomorrow night, warm and

well, jason stayed until the end, a lot of fans didn't. bryce isn't happy about it. >> people are saying metra is the reason people left. metra stayed open. it was a day game. it didn't shut down at 3:30 this afternoon. today the nationals were hoping to put pressure on the mets. you had to feel good, but instead the bull pen imploded like we have seen many times before. and mad max didn't have his best stuff today. scherzer hasn't won a game since july 30th. he gave up two home runs early. here in the fourth, he takes it out of the park. jason werth is back on it over the wall. that's a solo shot. scherzers has given up 11 home runs in the last six starts. the mets take a 3-0 lead.

moving on to the bottom of the fourth now, finally the fans have a reason to get on their feet. bases loaded for wilson ramoz who comes through with a monster shot. second career grand slam for the buffalo. the mets take a 4-3 lead. seventh inning, tied 5-5. reuben tejada comes in for the go-ahead run. the mets score three runs in the seventh and go on to win this one 8-5. they now lead the division by five games. afterwards, bryce harper already over the loss, but not exactly thrilled with the mets' fans today. >> i mean, they left in the seventh, so that's pretty brutal. but, you know, i don't know, i don't know, whatever. i mean, it's done, i'm over it. it's part of the game, you win and lose and that's part of the game. we'll come back tomorrow and try to get after harvey and see what we can do.

what would you do if something like this happened in your house? take a look at these pictures of what happened to a family in wyoming. a couple was home when a bear and its cub crashed through the door of their home. this is near grand teton national park. well, the woman locked herself in the bathroom and called 911. smart move. the husband went somewhere else in the house and barricaded
