martin luther king avenue, the time about 8:15 p.m. three gunmen, high velocity weapons. at least 28 shots fired. five men wounded. gunshot wound to the lower right leg. gunshot wound to the left leg. gunshot wound to the back. gunshot wound to the left hip. gunshot wound to the left to the right buttock. they shot a toyota prius. there was so much led in the air and violence in the street that it took all night long for the crime teches to process the scene. hear now from council woman who represents this ward. >> i don't think my reaction is any different than anybody else's in the city. it's too much. no one wants to live in a

community that is plagued with violence. the residents want the same thing that you want and that is to live in a safe community. >> sources say the victims are something less than cooperative, which could make it doubly hard for the cops to track down the shooters which could mean we may be standing here again doing a story similar to this. >> pat, thank you. criminals with guns are at the center of the surge of violence in the city and dozens were just taken off the streets this past weekend. now, from one part of the city particularly hard hit by the violence. mark? >> jim, we're outside of the seventh district police headquarters. this neighborhood has been hit absolutely the hardest by this surge in violence. today the mayor and chief of police say they are going to start tracking the people they think are most likely to be

involved in a violent crime. >> it takes guns off the same person over and over and over again, it is just unacceptable that we're putting our police officers at that level of risk and our community at that level of risk. >> today dc's mayor and police chief say they are frustrated that so many of the suspects and victims of violent crimes are the same people who they have arrested before. >> the people committing the crimes, the homicides in particular that are repeat violent gun offenders has almost doubled. >> according to police, 21 suspects charged with murder this year were under court ordered supervision at the time of the offense. 26 murder victims were also under court order supervision at the time they were killed. >> and tracking gun offenders as

they go through the system. >> to see if the punishment matched the charges and if the sentences were actually carried out. the mayor says everyone needs to be helt accountable. >> it does no one any good to point fingers. >> the district saw another violent and deadly weekend. the mayor pointed to dozens of guns taken off the streets in the past days. >> in 2015 we have recovered more than 1100 illegal guns. we have seized 83 illegal guns. >> the chief is going to continue to put more police on the streets and go after the guns to get them off of the streets. you heard the mayor tout the recent gun recovery numbers. coming up, we will go inside the numbers and tell you what happened to the people who were caught with those guns and why police want a zero tolerance to

repeat gun offenders. >> if you are waiting for someone to get home on metro, they may be running late. a train got stuck on the line and service was briefly stopped. all trains are running again right now but it is already impacted the afternoon rush. >> investigators are working to figure out what sparked a fire to force students out of their dorm. firefighters put out the blaze about 15 minutes later. the fire only damaged the roof. but there is some water damage to the upper floors. no one was hurt. >> we are still talking about the heat today. >> and storm team four is here

ruled an accident. >> trying to move her to another jail. just talked to the commonwealth attorney about his findings. julie? >> it is a horrific tale of suffering. after his exhaustive review of her treatment earlier this year. and her subsequent death. today he released a 50 plus page report about that review. now the commonwealth attorney says natasha was in the throes of severe mental illness and an autopsy report said she died of a syndrome known as excited delirium. that came in part due to the great struggle she put up.

ray says the four tasings she received were not the cause of her death and he has ruled this simply a tragic accident. he says none of the deputies involved in her transport are criminally liable. her death, all the same, is an undeniable tragedy. >> the way our system works in the 60s we released people with profound mental illness. we recognize that they have rights just like anyone else. we released them on to the streets and they are usually taken care of in outpatient settings and we depend on them continuing to take their medication for them to remain safe. sometimes that doesn't happen like in this case. >> now ray says that his examination in the case suggests that much more review needs to be done. changes need to be made in the way mentally ill offenders are treated in the jail and some of the changes have already been

made. back to you now. >> julie broke this story on twitter so follow julie carry for updates. >> and county churches are collecting donations to help send the body of a teen who was shot on his way to the bus stop in sterling on friday. he moved here in 2013 to get away from the violence innel salvador. now his family wants to fly his body back for a funeral. the principal reached out to the united methodist church which will now serve as the central collection point for anyone hoping to help. >> now that we have a centralized location, all of the funds can be funneled through and they will be dispersed as the family needs. >> we want to be of some comfort

and solace to the family. >> three people including another boy are charged in the case. a former police officer is facing child por noth pornograp charges. walker is accused of uploading child porn to a social media site. he resigned in april from fairfax county police as a public information officer. three years' probation with the first year in a half way house. that's the punishment for a man who pleaded guilty to a beating on board a metro train. it shows him knocking another person out. prosecutors say he got into an argument with a couple of teenagers last june. he punched one of them and knocked out another person who tried to intervene. some good news now in a tragic story in virginia.

the woman who survived the deadly ambush on live tv is out of the hospital and back home this evening. vicky gardener says she still has a long road to recovery but she thanked everyone for their support. she was seriously wounded when a man shot and killed his former colleagues during a live tv interview. she is focused on uniting the roanoke community and leaving a positive legacy in the wake of that tragedy. >> now to capitol hill, it appears president obama now has enough support in the senate to keep the iran nuclear deal in tact. three democratic senators announced their support today. that brings the total number of supporters to 41. that should be enough to block any resolution against the plan. the deal involves lifting sanctions in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear activity. congress has until september 17th to vote. a double stabbing in arlington. how a couple barely escaped with

million man march. the nation of islam leader says the march is about equality. half of all american adults have diabetes or blood sugar levels so high that they are considered pre-diabetic. 12 to 14% of adults have the disease and more than a third meet the criteria for pree diabetes. most of those are type two which are associated with obesity and inactivity. the numbers have mostly levelled off since 2008. >> now the parents of freddie gray have settled. find out what this could mean for the officers who are still accused.

we have team coverage now at 5:30. a man defending a woman is nearly killed in arlington. >> the grandmother of two missing children shared something she has never shared until now. >> and we're watching a big shift in our weather and the controversial clerk who plans to return to work. details ahead on the live desk. first a brutal attack on what neighbors call a safe neighborhood in arlington.

>> a couple confronted and then attacked by a man with a knife. >> good evening. there's nothing foreboding about this stretch of arlington boulevard but police say when it's dark, it's quite a different scene and this weekend it was indeed the scene of a brutal attack. a quiet road that runs next to route 50. you can just hear the traffic from the busy thoroughfare. not much else but it was the scene of an attack. >> man and a woman were walking along the 5900 block around 12:40 a.m. and they were confronted by man who grabbed the woman's purse and she tried to hold on to it. >> she tried to fight off her

attacker. >> the man she was with had been walking a little ahead. what neither of them knew is there was a second robber in the bushes. >> the victim sustained a life threatening injury, more specifically a stab wound to the chest. >> both victims were left bleeding as the two men who attacked them ran off. police say the attack was so brutal and the wound so deep that the man might have died if someone else would not have been walking by and dialed 911. >> the medics from the fire department assisted and performed life saving measures before they could get them to the fairfax hospital. >> police are calling it an attempted robbery. the victims came away with their belongings and more importantly their lives. >> now we understand that both victims are expected to recover. they weren't able to give much in the way of description of their attackers.

we're live in arlington. are. >> the chief says tonight this isn't true. they would get between a 10 and 20% bump in pay. >> right now thousands of students in northern virginia are chatting about their first day of a new school year. many more buses on the roads met longer commutes. kids in the city along with arguington all went back today. northern virginia bureau reporter takes a look now for teachers and students in fairfax.

>> they were here just hours before they disappeared and they have not been seen for a year. troy turner chose this park here in clarksburg because it's where he and his children last played together as a family before the children went missing. sarah, who would now be four and jacob 3, disappeared one year ago. their mother, katherine hoggle said she left them with someone so they would be safe. troy turner has been looking for them ever since. >> i'm well aware that there's a possibility that my kids are dead somewhere but there's no evidence of that. until you produce something like that, then i don't know how you just give up on two children and say we're not going to veg. >> katherine is in a mental hospital and has been declared

incompetent to stand trial. she cannot be forced to take medication which might put her in a frame of mind to reveal where she left the children. today her mother revealed for the first time that she speaks with katherine by phone every day. >> very loving. . i just like to help her see that someone is going to be there for her and disclosing what happened.

rock climbs. she is from our area. at the young age of 22, she knows what it's like to be on top of the world. wendy spoke to her about her stunning feat. >> the eiger means ogre and it can be mean and ugly especially to mums who try to crawl up its side. many have felt its lethal breath as they have been blown off or frozen to death in their quest. >> that sunset is unreal. she is becoming the first woman to free climb the north face of the eiger last month. the north face is a complicated passage known as murder wall because of its forbidding nature. >> this entire encompassing of me stepping out of my comfort zone of what i knew and trying something that i didn't know and i didn't know if i could do it.

tonight's parents of freddie gray say they have eached a tentative deal. the amount? nearly $6.5 million. >> my name is richard. i'm one of freddie's two fathers. the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. officers are charged in connection with the death.

>> they will really quickly resolve the police brutality issue. >> the panel will consider paying 2.8 million to grey's family this fiscal year and 3.6 million in july 2016. the settlement will resolve all claims against city personnel and institutions who might be deemed unconstitutional. this settlement is being proposed solely because it is in the best interest of the city. that would only make it many millions more in damages.
