ambushed and killed on air will push for changes to gun laws. andy parker vowed to fight to prevent any more gun violence and today he is asking the lawmakers to do whatever it takes. you will see whatever it takes trending today. gun law advocates have called for a day of action in cities across the u.s. and with the hash tag online. parker's daughter and her colleague adam ward were murdered by a former reporter last month. she will be joined by the survivors of virginia tech and sandy hook shootings today. one possible new law would punish anyone who sells a gun to a person not legally allowed to buy one. it's called the responsible transfer of firearms act. tim kaine was governor in 2007 when cho killed people at virginia tech. >> i find it an issue, a problem. this is a -- they're responsible for once it's an emergency. >> for the second time in a

week, d.c. fire and ems crews took a baby to the hospital in a fire truck rather than wait for an ambulance. this latest case happened monday on hunt street. graham is thankful his baby is all right after he stopped breathing. last friday, a baby stopped breathing and died. ambulances were too far away so fire trucks had to rush them to the hospital. >> in that instance, the paramedic and the ems supervisor acted in the best interest of the patient. >> d.c. fire and e m s says they're aware of the problem and a number of 911 calls along with traffic is part of what led to the delay. today a judge could sentence a montgomery county man to 12 years in prison. austin hall was convicted of manslaughter for a crash that killed his friend last year. that happened in olney. hall was 17 at the time and was going 119 miles an hour in a 35

zone. a 15-year-old died and another one was severely injured but survived. you probably remember this video of martese johnson's bloody arrest. those officers were cleared of wrongdoing and the virginian pilot newspaper report governor terry mcauliffe's office to release the report on what happened. his office has declined that request. and a dedication will be held today at the new visitors center at the memorial in pennsylvania. that take place at 10:00. a new learning center will open for the public for the first time. it will be used for educational program and special events to remember the crew and passengers of flight 93 will take place tomorrow. and the relationship between police and the community is like

hands and toes turned red and started shaking. the father does face assault charges for attacking the baby's mother while blaming her for the mix-up. well, this scene could have been much worse. everyone was able to escape a burning limo in california last night. that ignited in the middle of rush hour traffic in the middle of san jose. it was carrying members of a band called the red dragon cartel who played with ozzy osbourne in the '80s. police say a short in the electrical system likely called that fire. it was a regular day on the metro until someone pulled a gun on a teacher but it's not what you think. what we're learning about the startling incident. you know the saying no good de ♪

today." >> coming up on 4:44. u.s. officials weighing how to handle the growing rescue crisis in syria. tracie potts live on capitol hill now. tracie, the u.s. is at odds of what they can do. >> reporter: they're not really clear on what they can do. that's what john boehner said, it's not clear what role we need to play here. 4 million refugees spilled out of syria into nearby countries, more than europe or the middle east can handle right now. there are 7 million displaced inside that country as a result of the war going on there. some here on capitol hill, aaron, are urging that the u.s. take a leadership role in dealing with this humanitarian crisis. john mccain was saying criticism only the obama administration, and here they have done nothing. secretary of state kerry said they're looking at increasing the number of refugees that we take into this country. but how many or when that we don't know.

and there's no timetable for when they may act. but it is definitely something that's on the radar and obviously a very urgent situation with millions of syrians fleeing. the bottom line, some say is that we need to get more involved to try to deal with the political ramifications of bringing peace to that country and ending the war so that there aren't so many people leaving. >> tracie potts on capitol hill, thank you. this morning a man with a history of threatening to kill the president is in custody. secret service found archie glass, jr., outside of the white house last month. he just had been released from prison. this was a violation of his parole. he has served time for his threats against obama, george w. bush and bill clinton. court records said he once sought to be the next hinckley. you may have surprised to see a woman pull out a gun. we're learning that a plainclothes metro police

officer pulled a gun on a man. he was being ticketed for trying to skip fare. it became violent. and police are looking for thieves stealing handicap stickers. five vehicles had been broken into. >> told me that they steal them and sell them for like $50 each. i think that's despicable. >> metro says this is a small percentage and crime in parking lots is trending downward. after almost a year a man has been charged for a crash in oxon hill that killed five people including two mothers. kenneth kelley was driving more than 70 miles an hour when he slammed into the victim's car october. they were stopped at a red light on livingston road and kelley's blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit in

maryland. he is being held on $500,000 bond. a nonprofit says students need to learn more about the constitution and today they're launching a national constitutional literacy campaign here in d.c. essentials in education is pushing for students to have a better understanding of the constitution. the bill of rights and the declaration of independence. fairfax county is just starting the school year, but next year's budget is already a concern. the school board met with parents to explain the budget and to ask for ideas on how to balance it. they're predicting short falls next year. between 50 and $80 million. now the school board wants to hear from you as well. it's set up a special website where you can submit your ideas. we have a link on our nbc washington app. search school budget. nasa posted a pretty cool video recorded from the top of the washington monument. a meteor flew across the sky

tuesday night, do you see it. at the top of the screen. there it is. that goes away after a few seconds. the video is from an earth cam on the top of the washington monument. nasa says the meteor was flying above west virginia. the agency said you could see it from several states including virginia and maryland and if you were tall enough in d.c. too. >> what does that mean? >> i know. >> if you're 6'2" you can see it. if 5'2", you can't. >> i can't see much. >> i see one or two meteors once every other month or so. >> every two or three months? >> yeah. >> they're relatively common. >> we like to know these things. >> i will put out a tweet. >> you have to be looking for them to know we're seeing what we're seeing. >> the key is i spend a lot of time looking at the sky. that's part of the reason i see more of them. i drive to work -- as long as it's weather allowable, i drive

with the sunroof open every single morning because i like to look at the red lights. stare up at the sky. what else do i have to? it's 2:50 in the morning i'm driving to work. no cars on the street. nothing to look at. might as well look up. if you look up this morning, you'll get a rain drop right in your eye in many neighborhoods. 75 in washington. winds out of the west averaging six miles per hour. our summer finally coming to an end. 94 yesterday. that was our 52nd 90 day. and the year before a very late 90 degree day into the month of october but that's unusual. we'll have several chances for you to get rained on today. could have a rumble or two of thunder. on average today, maybe our rainiest day in nearly a month. mid 70s now. we'll inch into the low 70's and 80s today. cooling rain showers. i'll be running in the rain drops later on this afternoon.

planning out your afternoon, temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s. might get sunshine from time to time, but on the whole you should plan on another opportunity for rain later on this afternoon. again, highs today mostly to mid to upper 70s. as far as the rain drops, mostly loudoun, parts of frederick, fairfax, arlington, all part of a weather system that's still way back out to our west. so feels like florida outside this morning with the warm and the humid and the moist air coming through. there's the rain drops just about to get on to interstate 270 right now. melissa mollet will have a check in a second right after your seven day forecast. 80% chance of showers today. sunshine back for tomorrow. high school football games on friday night, no problem. as we get into the weekend though, a chance for rain starts saturday afternoon. best chance for rain will be saturday night and sunday morning. hopefully get dry weather early next week. a check on the weather with melissa mollet. >> good morning.

right through some road work is blocking a little bit here along 95 southbound in virginia. doesn't look like it's slowing things too much. just a warning, 95 south through fredericksburg, a couple of lanes are blocked near route 1. 270, no problems here. starting to see some of the rain falling along 270. i know i saw it headed southbound approaching old georgetown road. wide look at the beltway, overall, everything is flowing just fine. a lot of the earlier road work is clearing out of the way, especially top of the beltway. had two different problems there on the inner loop and the outer loop. now that's cleared this morning. prince george's county looking quite good. indian head highway into and out of town, branch avenue, pennsylvania avenue, everything rolling along just fine, again on 66 still seeing some of that rainfall coming down here this morning. east there of 28. see you back here in ten minutes. >> thanks, melissa. if your kids still need a car seat, listen up.

few hours of each other. you can see the video. they enter the store with their guns out. in two, the men demand money from the employees. police are still searching for the man who beat a good samaritan and stole his car. the victim wanted to help a man who was asking for money near the vienna metro stop on august 25. the victim took the seemingly homeless man to his own house for a meal but the man refused to eat but instead made comments about the victim's wealth. the man refused to leave, ripped the keys from the ignition and pretended to throw them. he got back into the car. and he brutally punched the victim. >> after he beat the victim, he then took the vehicle. it's still an active investigation. >> police are still trying to find out who the carjacker is. it's okay to be generous, but use caution. we're working for you and your family's safety as multiple groups are asking you to check your child's car seat today.

the organization safe kids worldwide says fewer than half a million car seats recalled last year were fixed. in d.c. this morning, safe kids and the national highway safety board is asking you to fix your car seat. master card has new feature that will let people verify what they buy on line by taking a selfie. the employees are testing selfie pay through october. the credit card company is looking through other ways of identifying identification instead of using passwords. molette green at the live desk. right now, a new york cop is off the regular beat after mistakenly arresting former tennis pro james blake. we have learned this morning that that officer is now on a modified assignment after internal affairs investigators watched surveillance video of the incident outside a manhattan

hotel. blake says he was thrown to the ground by officers who arrested him wednesday. a police spokesman says blake was misidentified during an investigation into fraudulently purchased cell phones. the athlete was released as soon as the officers realized they had the wrong guy and then they arrested another man. that is the latest from the live desk. back to you.
