as the sun is upp coming up, we are going to see a large flag unfurled along the west side. that is where the plane made entry. also there's going to be a remembrance ceremony. that's going to get underway at 9:30 this morning. now, this is an invitation only event. it is open only to the families of the victims as well as survivors of the attack. now, the memorial here at the pentagon, that memorial -- [ no audio ] >> all right. it appears we lost megan's signal. we'll try to get her back and have more of her reporting from the pentagon. as the nation remembers 9/11, you can help others in the district at a meal packing event. it takes place on the national mall next to the reflecting pool. it runs until 4:00 p.m. each will last one hour.

another day of service event, the fifth annual muslims for lifeblood drive. that starts at 9:00 this morning. ceremonies are planned across the nation. nbc's dave wagner will join us in about ten minutes. it's 4:35. the latest now on a developing story. police are still searching for the suspect in a double shooting who led them on a chase through silver spring last night. news4 was first on the scene. it started around 9:30 at university boulevard and carroll boulevard. two adult men were shot, one was hospitalized. the suspect then led police on a chase through howard county. they lost him. the suspect was driving a black bmw with custom rims. a man is in quote critical condition after being struck by a car in bowie. prince george's county police tell us this happened at laurel-bowie road and annapolis bowie road. he was taken to the nearby hospital. one u.s. marine is dead and

18 others are injured after a training accident in southern california. this happened yesterday at camp pendleton. all we know is that a single vehicle rolled over during routine training. the focus is is on the injured marines and notifying family. the justice department and new york city district attorney's office are providing $79 million in grants to help rape victims. 1.4 million of that will go to virginia. the funds will be used to cut the backlog of untested rape kits. news4's meagan fitzgerald spoke to one victim who said she waited for results of over one year for her rape kit. >> when i was waiting for my results i felt like i couldn't make any other decisions. i couldn't decide about my future because everything rested in that rape kit. >> now, more victims may get closure. the state of virginia says they will start testing more than 2,000 backlogged kits in the next two years.

today america remembers 9/11. today marks 14 years since the attacks and there are remembrance ceremonies being held across the nation. nbc's dave wagner joins us from new york's ground zero with more on today's events. good morning to you. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, eun. you know, sacred, solemn really a somber day here in new york city. you can barely see the top of one world trade center. a far contrast from september 11, it was a clear day, 8:46 in the morning. the first commercial plane hit the north tower here. 102 minutes later we saw the devastation here and in shanksville, pennsylvania. there was a new memorial there that opened yesterday. 13,000 american children, they were born september 11, 2001. this morning at 9:30, some of

the kids will be at the new york stock exchange to ring the opening bell. a solemn occasion as it is every year. a different kind of somber with the opening of shanksville memorial. in maryland, a piece of the world trade center will be placed at the kensington fire department. in arlington at marymount university, veterans will ring the bell on campus at 8:46 a.m. that's the moment as dave mentioned the first plane hit the world trade center. on the national mall, schoolchildren and veterans will take part in a day of service to help military families. students at the university of maryland are marking september 11th with american flags. nearly 500 people have already shared this video from the nbc washington facebook page. students placed flags around the mall yesterday. the vets organization said it

wanted to remember those who died. 4:47 right now. jon stewart coming to d.c. next week to help lobby congress about a health program for 9/11 survivors. it's set to expire at the end of this month. if it's not extended, survivors and first responders may lose access to doctors or medications. lawmakers also have to decide whether to allocate more money for the 9/11 victims compensation fund. we just got word here at the live desk minutes ago that two michigan lawmakers are out after trying to cover up their affair. representative representative cindy gamrock has been suspended for misconduct. all of this happening in the last 30 minutes. she was having an affair with another lawmaker, representative ted cursor. he submitted his letter on the house floor as his colleagues got ready to vote for a second time to throw him out of office.

now, after their affair was found out, courser sent a phony e-mail claiming he was being blackmailed, thinking that story would make an affair with his colleague less believable. if you can follow all that. virginia's attorney general is bringing attention to unfair and deceptive loans. today, mark herring is changing the consumer protection division to track the predatory car lenders. many failed to make a car payment last year and some lenders charge more than 200% interest. well, this graphic video of a mentally ill inmate who died in custody has been released by the fairfax county sheriff. she says she wants the public to see what happened. the video shows deputies struggling to get natasha mckenna into restraints and a special transport chair so they could move her to a different jail. deputies were wearing protective suits because mckenna had previously thrown bodily fluids at them. they used the taser on her four

times before discovering that she was unresponsive. >> because there was so much inaccurate information that was being put out and it was important that we were able to show exactly the professionalism as well as the restraint as well as the patience that the deputies demonstrated. >> mckenna suffered from schizophrenia. mental health advocates said she should have never been in jail in the first time and a taser should not have been used to subdue her. her death was ruled as an accident. and national army guardsman alek skarlatos and the other two will be in a parade today. all three received france's highest honor for their actions. the iran nuclear deal is

moving forward. senate democrats blocked a disapproval resolution, meaning president obama won't have to veto and the nuclear deal passes a key part in congress. house republicans are trying to find a way to stop the agreement. but the deal is now likely to go through. this morning, presidential candidate carly fiorina is celebrating a pretty big win. her rising poll numbers have earned her a spot on the main stage next week at cnn's republican debate. she is rushing off recent jabs from donald trump. many said he insulted her looks in a recent "rolling stone" interview. he said he did not. tonight he is appearing on "the tonight show" with jimmy fallon. trump is hitting back at republican rival bobby jindal. he went on a tirade against trump at a speech right here in washington yesterday. >> like all narcissists, donald trump is insecure and weak. he's afraid of being exposed. that's why he tells us always and constantly how big and strong and wealthy he is.

will not be outdoor food vendors. 18th street and columbia road in northwest are staying open to traffic. adams morgan day is this sunday from noon to 6:00. a lot of people in fairfax county are not happy with the county parks. many of you think that the basic facilities at the parks are not being met. according to "the washington post" last year the county cut park budgets by more than $700,000. a spokesperson for the park system says there's often not enough space at county swimming pools, gyms and other high demand facilities. and stay with us.
