the annual reading of the names of victims will happen later this morning. it is 5:00 a.m. good morning. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> i'm eun yang. it's friday, september 11, 2015. we want to get right to storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell with a look at your forecast. good morning. >> good morning, everybody. friday finally is here. skies are still partly cloudy out there, but the rain has come to an end. friday sunshine is on tap. saturday, rain showers looking more and more likely. and sunday looks very cool around here with an opportunity for some showers on your sunday as well. but for now, in the short term, friday looks fabulous. rain showers have moved out. drier weather is moving in. temperatures in the low to mid 60s across most of the area. nice, cool start this morning, expect full sunshine on your friday. today's highs in the low to m mmid 80s. we'll talk more about the weekend rain chances in ten minutes. for now, a check of traffic with melissa. >> good morning.

still have the icc the westbound lanes shut down. right now the crash what happened at redland road, traffic being pushed off of the icc there at georgia avenue so you can't get any further west in georgia avenue at this point this morning. prince george's county looking quite good here. nice and green. no road work to be worried about. same thing, 66 rolling along nicely. so is 95. top of the beltway here, again, moving along well here. b.w. parkway, 95 and 29 everything looking good. back in ten minutes. today marks 14 years since the deadliest terrorist attack on u.s. soil. nearly 3,000 people died on september 11, 2001. this morning at the pentagon, workers will unfurl an american flag at sunrise. later in the morning a wreath laying ceremony will also take place at the pentagon memorial. in new york city, vice president joe biden will participate in memorial events. at the new flight 93 memorial in

shanksville, pennsylvania, names of the victims will be read. it was 9:37 in the morning when flight 77 hit the pentagon. news4's megan mcgrath was driving by the pentagon as it was hit and she saw firsthand the aftermath of that terrible day. megan, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, eun. it was a crystal clear blue sky day and when that fireball rose up into the sky, people in the area knew what had happened. that we had been hit here in washington. today of course is a day to remember the victims here at the pentagon. there are a number of observance events that are scheduled. but it is also a regular work day for people and soon we are expecting to start seeing employees walking down the sidewalk beside me, headed to the office. but certainly the day, the mood will be somber. as they remember their colleagues that were lost 14 years ago. now, there are a number of remembrance events and

ceremonies taking place today. beginning at 6:40 this morning. that's when large american flag will be unfurled from the roof of the pentagon along the west side. that's the side that was hit by the plane. a remembrance ceremony will be held at 9:30 this morning. that's an invitation only event, open to the families and survivors of the attack. the victim's memorial will be closed to the general public during that memorial service to give the families privacy to reflect and remember the loved ones away from the spotlight. then at 2:00 this afternoon, another remembrance ceremony. that is going to be held in the courtyard of the pentagon. and that is for pentagon employees who want to pay their respects and reflect as well. that is at 2:00. but a number of different events taking place. we'll be covering it of course. i'll bring you more with another update coming up in the next hour. back to you in the studio. >> megan mcgrath at the pentagon, thank you. at 8:46 this morning,

president and mrs. obama will observe a moment of silence. that is the exact moment american airlines flight 11 flew into the world trade center's north tower. the president will observe the moment on the south lawn of the white house. as the nation remembers 9/11, you can help others in the district as a celebration of service and a meal packing event that takes place on the national mall next to the reflecting pool. that takes place at 8:00 and runs until 4:00 p.m. each will last about one hour. also today in honor of the lives lost in the attacks, the fifth annual muslims for lifeblood drive takes place at 9:00 this morning. ceremonies are planned across the nation to remember the victims of september 11th. nbc's dave wagner will join us live from new york's ground zero later. and police are still searching for the suspect in a double shooting who led them on a chase through silver spring last night. news4 was first on the scene. this started around 9:30 at the

corner of university boulevard and carroll avenue. two adult men were shot, one was hospitalized. the suspect then led police on the chase through howard county. they lost him. the suspect was driving a black bmw with custom rims. right now, a man is in quote extremely critical condition after he was by a car in bowie. this happened at the intersection of laurel-bowie road and annapolis road. the man was taken to a nearby hospital. this morning a 15-month-old girl is back at home safe after police issued an amber alert for her last night. montgomery county police said farah muhammad's father took her from the mother's home. two hours after it went out, police cancelled the alert when they were found in frederick, maryland. call it a headset gate. the new controversy surrounding the new england patriots after last night's home opener and this morning we have a response from the nfl. plus, the growing cause of death nationwide and why most

5:09 right now. in "news4 your health," avoidable and preventable health causes are causing an increasing number of deaths. high blood pressure led to 10 million deaths in 2013 making it the number one preventable risk factor. smoking and poor diet round out the top three risk factors. researchers say it's a significant change from 20 years ago when malnutrition and unsafe water were among the top contributors to poor health. the steeler coach is in the headsets. they were getting the patriot radio broadcast. >> new controversy for the i think in patriots during the first game of the season. as you heard right there the steelers were getting the patriots radio broadcast in the headsets for most of the first

today." >> this is a live look now at 9/11's memorial in new york city. later this morning there will be reading of the names of those who died at the world trade center. we'll have a live report from new york coming up at 5:30. it is now developing right now, police in phoenix say they have no new leads in the search for a shooter who has been targeting drivers on interstate 10. investigators have confirmed that 11 cars, trucks and buses have now been hit in the past two weeks. just yesterday, there were five reports of cars being hit by bullets. it has many drivers looking at using back roads to get to work and school. >> it really kind of takes us out of the way but for the safety of my son it's worth it. >> who wants to be driving on i-10 when there's bullets flying around? not me. >> an armed civilian group is patrolling the road in an effort

to find the shooter. happening today, local catholic and other religious leaders are calling for criminal justice reform ahead of pope francis' visit to d.c. cardinal donald wuerl and members of the united methodist church and catholic charities is launching walk with francis. they want to commit to following his example of prayer and service. the groups are also highlighting a program from catholic charities called welcome home. it helps rehabilitate ex-prisoners through religion. we are seeing how d.c. is stepping up security. you won't need a ticket if you're planning to see him on the ellipse on september 23. he will circle the mall in the popemobile. security gates at that area are opening at 4:00 a.m. that morning. they'll close at 10:00 a.m. the pope's motorcade is expected to drive through at 10:30 and 11:00. and expect security. >> there are multiple layers of screening including mag

magnetometers and bag searches. >> once you're inside the gates no one can leave or come back. expect road closures and big delays for all of his visit from september 22nd through the 24th. you can find out everything about pope francis' visit on the app. that includes more on the traffic impact. search pope metro. new this morning, investigators in new york city are trying to figure out what caused a subway train to derail. this happened last night in brooklyn. about 100 people were on the train, three hurt. it is not clear how bad those injuries are. the derailment brought service to a halt for about ten stations along the same line. 5:17 now. one u.s. marine is dead and 18 others are injured after a training accident in southern california. this happened yesterday at camp pendleton. all we know is that it was a single vehicle rollover crash

during routine training. the marine corps said its focus is on the injured marines and notifying family. joe morrissey is dropping the state senate bid. he's the former delegate who went to jail last year over his relationship with an underaged employee. he said health issues will keep him from running. he fathered a child with that staffer who is now of age. he lost his seat when that relationship was discovered. he won it back and lost it again when he moved from his district. looking live at the capitol where the iran nuclear deal is moving forward. senate democrats blocked a senate disapproval decision. meaning that it passes a key part in congress. house republicans were trying to find a way to stop the agreement, but the deal is likely to go through. talking decision 2016 now. this morning, presidential candidate carly fiorina is celebrating a pretty big win. her rising poll numbers have earned her a spot on the main

stage next week at the cnn debate. she is brushing off comments from donald trump. many said that he insulted her looks in a recent "rolling stone" interview and he said he didn't. he is appearing on "the tonight show" with jimmy fallon. he is also hitting back at republican rival bobby jindal. jindal went on a tirade of sorts against trump in d.c. yesterday. >> like all narcissists, donald trump is insecure and weak. he's afraid of being exposed. that's why he tells us always and constantly how big and strong and wealthy he is. >> jindal called trump an ego maniac, dangerous and a carnival act. trump returned fire on twitter saying he only responds to those who register more than 1% in the polls. pretty candid and emotional words last night from vice president biden. he is wrestling with whether to run for the white house. nbc's tracie potts is following this from capitol hill in

morning. tracie? >> reporter: good morning. looks like he hasn't made a decision yet, but he did have a very emotional interview especially when he talked about he son beau who recently passed away on stephen colbert last night. he talked about beau never complained. remember it was his son beau who wanted joe biden to run for president, but based on what he said last night it's still unclear if he is even made up his mind. he said when someone decides to run, they need to be in this 110%. >> i'd be lying if i said that i knew i was there. >> reporter: so maybe some soul searching still going on there. he doesn't have long though. the democrats are debating next month. aaron? >> tracie potts, thanks. breaking news right now into the live desk. we have more information on that accident we have been telling you about this morning on the icc. this is at georgia avenue in brookville. we have just found out in the past few minutes that it's fatal crash. all the westbound lanes are

closed there on the icc. melissa mollet is here with a look at the situation there. melissa? >> yeah, kristin. again, we are shut down here on the icc. now that we know this is a fatal crash, it could be some time before the lanes are reopened. again, westbound icc, shut down at georgia avenue. the crash is actually little further up at redland road, but they have things shut down. you can't get further west than that. one mile backup, 95 north at 234. hard to see but we're slow there this morning. you can see the slowdowns as you headed northbound. once you get through that area in dale city no problems there. inner and outer loop, rolling along quite nicely. same thing as you look at b.w. parkway, 95 and then 29, everything again is nice and green. chuck? all right, there's a view from our city camera this

morning. sunshine is on tap for most of your friday afternoon. we do have a couple of clouds around in our sky early this morning. on the whole though, no weather related slowdowns coming your way for your friday. into the weekend, things are looking a little different. check it out on storm team 4 radar. two cold fronts are changing our pattern from summer to fall. the first one went through yesterday. brought us showers and a couple of thunderstorms around. it's taken the edge off of the humidity. so we get to enjoy that today. but it will still be warmer than average. today's highs, low to mid 80s. cold front number two out to st. louis and chicago now. that will change the temperatures dramatically as we head into saturday afternoon and especially on sunday. sunday will feel autumnal to say the very least. 59 now frederick, maryland. 61 gaithersburg. 64 in manassas and quantico. 62, culpepper, virginia, right now. hour by hour, planning out your day, low to mid 60s this morning. mid 70s at lunch time, low to

the state of virginia says that i'll test more than 2,000 backlogged k kits in the next t years. james proctor has died. heant ared communities -- he represented the counties in the last few years. state flags have been ordered to fly at half-staff to honor him who was 79 years old. three americans who stopped a terror attack on a train in france will be honored with a parade today. skarlatos, stone and college student anthony sadler will be in a parade at noon today in sacramento. all three received france's highest honor for their heroic actions. virginia's attorney general is bringing attention to unfair and deceptive loans. today, mark herring plans to announce he's changing his consumer protection division to track predatory car lenders. many failed to make a car

270. right through hyattstown as you get through that curve southbound is slowing and then picking back up, northbound of course you don't have any problem there. that's always easy for us. looking at prince george's county, looking good everywhere. branch avenue, 55 miles per hour the entire way in. back in ten minutes with some travel times. today america remembers 9/11. we mark 14 years since the attacks and there are remembrance ceremonies being held across the nation. nbc's dave wagner joins us this morning from new york's ground zero with more on the events. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, eun. it's been 14 years since september 11, 2001. you can't see the top of the one world trade center right here. it was 8:46 in the morning when the world really changed when that first plane hit the north tower here in new york city.

19 hijackers, four planes and then 102 minutes later unbelievable devastation that the world witnessed there. this morning though, kind of a sign of hope here. 13,000 american children they were born on that day, september 11, 2001. and this morning some of them will ring the bell that's at 9:30 this morning at the new york stock exchange. i should mention here that they're opening the 9/11 memorial center a little bit earlier here to accommodate all the crowds last year about 20,000 people showed up to take a look at the memorial. it is a moving tribute and i could compare it i guess to in some respects the vietnam memorial where when people show up there they're just quiet. they're silent and very reflective of the day, 14 years ago. eun? >> dave wagner, thank you. in the 14 years since 9/11 the nature of terrorist attacks have changed.

sophisticated cyber attacks have taken the place of large scale bombings and in light of that terry mcauliffe says it's important to remain vigilant. he's ordered security audits of all state agencies to be completed by october 15th. he will then look for ways to improve how virginia protects against online attacks. >> a wonderful district. students will wake up to this on the way to classes. others placed american flags around the mall on campus yesterday. nearly 500 of you shared this video from the nbc washington facebook page. the terp vets organization said it wanted to remember those who died. also in maryland today, a piece of the world trade center will be placed in front of the kensington volunteer fire department. that's on pliers mill road. at marymount university, veterans will ring the bells at 8:46 a.m.

that's the moment that the first plane hit the world trade center. and then schoolchildren and veterans will take part in a day of service to help military families. jon stewart is helping to lobby congress about a health program for 9/11 survivors. it's set to expire at the end of the month. if not extended, the veterans may lose access to doctors and medications. and the congress has to decide whether to allocate more money to the compensation fund. and a suspicious woman has been approaching students. a woman asked two kids walking to school yesterday morning to get in her white van. the students ran and told adults nearby. police stepping up patrols in the area. a trendy d.c. restaurant won't be open tonight. at least four people became sick after eating at fig & olive. a spokesperson says that the company is working with the department of health and will continue to do so to ensure the

safety of their customers. the restaurant opened in june. a judge trying to decide if drivers can pursue a class action lawsuit against the company that runs the 495 express lanes in virginia. the suit alleges that transurban preyed on toll users slamming them with $75,000 in fines and about missed tolls. those filing the suit have had all of their accounts settled. the company has started a fine forgiveness program. 5:36 now. if you're headed to the d.c. state fair this weekend don't be surprised to see a pot growing contest. >> yep. >> the best bud contest is all about growing marijuana. that's what they're calling it. participants will be judged on appearance and odor and touch. the plants will, not the people. small amounts of marijuana was

if you're heading out on metro this weekend, plan ahead. there's track work on all six lines starting at 10:00 tonight. trains will run only every 24 minutes. and on the green line, the greenbelt station is closed tonight. you have to take a shuttle bus to the college park stop. it seems many are not happy with the parks in fairfax county. at least that's according to the needs assessment survey released by the county. many of you think the basic facilities at the parks are not being met. according to "the washington post" last year the county cut park budgets by more than $700,000. a spokes woman says there's often not enough space at county swimming pools, gyms and here high demand facilities. all right. 5:41 now. a lot of people are looking

the class would be only for high schoolers and it would focus on the events leading up to the terrorist attacks and the aftermath. the class was approved this week. you might want to give yourself extra time if you're headed to arlington this weekend. there will be a lot of road closures because of the 9/11 race and some festivals. some streets around the pentagon will be closed for the memorial race. you can head to the nbc washington app for a list of the closures for the entire weekend. at least 30 new ambulances are coming to the streets of washington but won't see them until december. the new ambulances will help fill a critical gap. d.c. fire and ems crews had to step in twice this month. crews drove a baby to the high school in a fire truck instead of waiting for the ambulance. d.c. officials say repairs are contributing to the shortage and people are calling for an ambulance when they don't really need one. it's now 5:48. the prince george's county counselor is having a briefing on the closing of laurel hospital.

firefighters say the closing of the hospital will increase the time it takes for patients to get emergency care. the hospital willing demolished and they'll open a walk-in center instead. it came as a shock. >> we would have liked to have been part of some type of stakeholder meeting before an announcement was ever made. >> laurel volunteer fire chiefs wrote letters to "the baltimore sun" saying closing laurel hospital will lead to at least a 20 minute increase to get patients to either doctor's community hospital or howard county general. hundreds of workers are being laid off as well. and check out the brand-new light bulb you're using this morning. a big recall that involves phillips halogen light bulbs. 400,000 are being recalled because they can shatter, burn and last rate you. there have been more than a dozen reports of the bulbs shattering and a couple of
