large flag that's been unfurled from the roof of the pentagon. that's become an annual tradition here on 9/11. and lives were changed that day. the victims, their families, the survivors. you can also see the impact 9/11 has had on young adults. they were just kids when it happened, but the attack helped shape them as adults. just after sun up, a giant american flag was unfurled from the roof of the pentagon. just as it was for the very first time the day after the attack 14 years ago. >> as a single generation, other than the world wars, there hasn't been anything other than pearl harbor that's defined a generation. >> reporter: these men could see the flag as they walked inside their offices. they were just kids when the building was hit. josh in michigan, richard in massachusetts, but the experience shapes the force of their lives.

>> developing right now, police are still searching for the suspect in double shooting who led him on a chase through silver spring last night. we were first on the scene. it started around 9:30 montgomery county police tell us one man was taken to the hospital. the suspect led police for a chase. they lost him. the suspect was driving a black bmw with kusen rims. >> the patriots can't stay away from a controversy. the pittsburgh steelers complained that they were hearing the patriot's radio broadcast in their headsets. the patriot's headsets were shut

details on the closures. >> five former members of the university of virginia men's swim team want a judge to dismiss a hazing lawsuit. the teammate says he and other first-year swimmers were taunted and threatened. he says they were also forced into sexual contact and to eat live fish. the five students deny it and say their former teammate has not sub substantiated them. it's just opened it doors but a new restaurant here in the nation's capital is now at the center of a health concern.

it would focus on the events leading up to the terrorist attacks. it's not yet clear which high schools will offer it. >> developing this morning, develop buses are being rerouted in arizona to avoid a stretch of i-10 targeted bay shooter. 11 vehicles have been hit by vehicles in the last two weeks and police say the number is likely to rise. there were 15 reports of shots fired yestday alone. the shootings have some changing their routines while others say they don't want to give in to fear. >> we haven't changed anything. we just keep carrying our firearm in case we find them. >> it takes a little bit longer. i have a little girl. i do everything to make her safe. >> despite the frequency of the shootings, police say they don't have any solid leads. >> and a man is dead after leading police on a high-speed chase and taking hostages at an l.a. restaurant. it started after he carjacked someone and led police against

the city. she bail he bailed out and told women and children to leave a restaurant and took four people hostages before being shot and killed by a s.w.a.t. team. >> a sal manila scare has shut town a restaurant. all four people had to be hospitalized with salmonella like symptoms. a spokesperson for fig and olive says they are working with doh. the restaurant opened in june. >> and here's the latest with future weather. we'll start off dry tomorrow morning. lunchtime future weather bringing rain into the area. potentially some heavier rain. we're not talking about severe weather in the forecast as we work into the afternoon and evening hours. likely continuing to track rain in spots.

[ bell tolling ] >> reporter: 14 years after the world stopped, watched and mourned, grief remains at ground zero. a new tower of old painful wound for those who lost family and friends. at 8:46, a city wide minute of silence marking the moment the first plane struck the first tower. a reading of the names marks the human toll of that day. >> we are so blessed to have you as an angel. >> reporter: nearly 3,000 lives lost and remembered from new york to washington. where the president and first lady once again led the nation in a moment of silence to mark this somber day. and in a field in pennsylvania, where on thursday the national

park service opened a visitor's center in that field with 40 memorial groves. one for each of the passengers and crew members who died. as this small down commemorates a tragedy that hits home, the september 11th memorial museum has welcomed visitors since it opened last year. museums, memorials and memories of a day too personal and painful to forget. there is no business that was harder hit on september 11th an cantor fitzgerald. they business at the world trade center, they lost 658 employees. to date, 50 children of those employees who were killed have been hired by that firm. in new york city, dave wagner, nbc news. >> thank you, dave. there's an effort underway to create an education center here at the national 9/11 pentagon
